Bug#618637: kppp does not work after upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze
I have what appears to be the same problem. To shed some light on it, I traced system calls made by kppp to find out what arguments it passes to pppd, as follows: su -p strace -u username -f -s 100 -e trace=fork, vfork, execve 21 kppp (The -u flag in the strace man page explains why it is necessary in this case to run strace with root privileges, using the -u flag to pass in your ordinary username (under which you would normally be running kppp.)) The following excerpt from the output of this strace command shows pppd being called: ... Opener: received OpenDevice Opener: received ExecPPPDaemon Process 2097 attached In parent: pppd pid 2097 Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Kernel supports ppp alright. [pid 2097] execve(/usr/sbin/pppd, [pppd, 115200, -detach, crtscts, defaultroute, usepeerdns, user, bwhitehe], [/* 0 vars */]) = 0 Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself pppd: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so. pppd: (None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address.) Process 2097 detached [pid 2094] --- SIGCHLD (Child exited) @ 0 (0) --- It was pppd that died pppd exited with return value 1 ... Based on the mention of /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options at the beginning of the original bug report (and on my experience with older versions of kppp) I was expecting an argument like call kppp-options to show up in the argument list passed to pppd, but it's not there. It seems to me that the absence of call kppp-options or anything like that in pppd's arguments might explain why pppd doesn't see Mark's noauth option in /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options, and thus why you get pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself ... in the original bug report This suggests the following workaround, which gets kppp functioning for me. (Mark, I guess you've already done step 1, but I'm including it below because /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options was not present in my fresh install of squeeze.) WORKAROUND (1) as root, create (or edit) the file /etc/ppp/peers/kppp-options so that it has one line containing the uncommented word noauth (2) In the Accounts tab of kppp configuration, edit your account as follows: In the Dial tab, near the bottom of the window, select Customize pppd arguments and add the following argument: call kppp-options (3) Run kppp in a terminal window (as in the original bug report) --- After doing this, my output from step 3 is: ~$ kppp Opener: received SetSecret Opener: received SetSecret Opener: received OpenLock Opener: received OpenDevice Opener: received ExecPPPDaemon In parent: pppd pid 2192 Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Kernel supports ppp alright. Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device Opener: received OpenResolv Opener: received RemoveSecret Opener: received RemoveSecret but in spite of these remaining complaints, the ppp0 interface appears to be running OK based on the output of ifconfig ppp0 and on apparently normal network functioning of my ssh client and my web browser. -Bruce -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I deleted my ~/.libreoffice and ~/.openoffice.org directories. That solved the problem, tables are now working as normal, so you can close this bug. Bug#618872: Wildcard regression in mod_vhost_ldap 2.0.6
Package: libapache2-mod-vhost-ldap Version: 2.0.6-1 Tags: patch Severity: serious The commit “Fix wildcard search” [1] in mod_vhost_ldap 2.0.6 is incorrect, and actually breaks wildcard searches. The code was correct originally [2], and has been in production use on servers at MIT for two years. But now it looks for records that literally have ‘\*’ in the hostname instead of ‘*’, and of course it doesn’t find one. (Are you sure you haven’t been accidentally testing with records that have literal backslashes in the hostname, e.g. ‘\*.example.com’? Or perhaps someone was trying out the patch for wildcard hostnames without my prior patch that properly escapes LDAP queries [3]?) I verified the regression from 2.0.5 on a real server, and successfully tested the patch below on top of 2.0.6. The patch is also available in my Git repository git://andersk.mit.edu/mod-vhost-ldap.git in the branch “wildcard”. This branch also has a spelling fix for the example configuration file. Bug#618275: Getting IPv6 running with rtorrent (was:Re: Bug#618275: dup of #617791)
Hi, people. On Mar 19 2011, Steinar H. Gunderson wrote: All my patches have been posted under http://home.samfundet.no/~sesse/, but I don't have any index of them short of what's been in the bug report. Well, unfortunately, I failed miserably at browsing your site for patches. :-) Google was not of much help either. :-( I had a discussion with the rtorrent author at some point (trying to get it into mainline), and he made me do some changes; I'll see if I can dig them up at some point, or if they're already included in -07. I would just like to grab something so that I can push a new version to the Debian repositories (perhaps to experimental, if you think that it is not proper for public consumption). Bug#611972: Please disable umountroot in lxc-debian template
On Fri, Feb 04, 2011 at 10:38:44AM +0100, Laurent Ulrich wrote: Severity: wishlist When issuing a shutdown from inside a container the S60umountroot script remounts the container's / filesystem read-only. This has the effect of remounting the host's /var filesystem read-only. Like checkroot.sh was disabled in lxc-debian template, may be the umountroot should be disabled too. To me, this is a bug, not a wishlist. It's really annoying, for instance if one wants to change something in the boot procedure and wants to restart the container. Even more, the mount state in the host appears as still rw, which is really confusing. Bug#618874: lintian: Please check copyright stanzas from non-DFSG licenses
Package: lintian Version: 2.4.3 Severity: wishlist First of all I have to say that this would be more implementable once the standardized copyright format has stabilized and non-use is deprecated. As such it should be taken as a vote of support for #478930 . I recently found that I had issued something into the main area with parts under the W3C-Document license. Bug#618715: felix-latin: Can not make any search
Hello Michael, Michael P. a écrit : Package: felix-latin Version: 2.0-2 Severity: normal Whatever I enter into the search bar, I always get a Ne puis charger /home/user/.felix-out.tif (in french). The instructions which triggered this message are : QString outfile=QDir::homePath ()+/.felix-out.tif; ... QProcess::execute(/usr/bin/ddjvu, args); which imply writing into a file /home/user/.felix-out.tif with the application ddjvu So either you are missing the application ddjvu or the directory /home/user is not writable. I shall fix the packages dependency : it sould depend on djvulibre-bin, obviously! So the software is just unusable. (Another problem: the interface is always in french) You are right: every software should at least be able to output messages in a language provided by a world-sized empire. Possible examples of language are : Latin, English (by order of appearance). I suggest to Yves Ouvrard, the upstream author, to modify the default value of the messages to be in Latin rather than in French. You are free to contribute to the localization of the package in your mother tongue. By the way, the dictionary featured by felix-latin is only Latin-French. If you are aware of an already digitalized Latin-English dictionary available in the public domain or under some free license, please inform us. Bug#618878: [pm-utils] power.d/wireless broken
Package: pm-utils Version: 1.4.1-7 Severity: normal Tags: patch --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I noticed that pm-utils did not turn on wireless power management when unplugging from ac on my laptop. I investigated a bit and found out, that the power.d/wireless skript uses a heuristic method for finding out if a network interface is a wireless interface. The line in question is # Skip if not a wireless card. [ -d /sys/class/net/$1/wireless ] || return 1 Apparently, the directory /sys/class/net/$1/wireless has gone away, or is not available on every platform at least. Therefor I think it's best to use /sys/class/ieee80211 instead. The patch below corrects the script accordingly. The new skript works fine on my box but I cannot test it on different hardware and it might need some adjustments in the final loop for other network cards since I am not sure what it means, when one ieee80211/* device has multiple ../device/net/* devices. diff --git a/wireless b/wireless index b4be69c..de70084 100755 --- a/wireless +++ b/wireless @@ -16,12 +16,10 @@ get_wireless_params() { unset iwpriv iwconfig iwlevel # Don't do anything if we cannot find a driver for this iface. -[ -L /sys/class/net/$1/device/driver ] || return 1 -# Skip if not a wireless card. -[ -d /sys/class/net/$1/wireless ] || return 1 +[ -L /sys/class/ieee80211/$1/device/driver ] || return 1 # Also don't do anything if the device is disabled -[ $(cat /sys/class/net/$1/device/enable) = 1 ] || return 1 -driver=$(readlink /sys/class/net/$1/device/driver) +[ $(cat /sys/class/ieee80211/$1/device/enable) = 1 ] || return 1 +driver=$(readlink /sys/class/ieee80211/$1/device/driver) driver=${driver##*/} case $driver in ipw2100) iwpriv_ac=set_power 0 @@ -31,7 +29,7 @@ get_wireless_params() { ipw3945) iwpriv_ac=set_power 6 iwpriv_batt=set_power 7;; -iwl*) if [ -f /sys/class/net/$1/device/power_level ]; then +iwl*) if [ -f /sys/class/ieee80211/$1/device/power_level ]; then iwlevel_ac=0 iwlevel_batt=3 else @@ -53,19 +51,21 @@ get_wireless_params() { } wireless_powersave() { -for dev in /sys/class/net/*; do -get_wireless_params ${dev##*/} $1 || continue +for phy in /sys/class/ieee80211/*; do +get_wireless_params ${phy##*/} $1 || continue ret=0 - printf Turning powersave for %s %s... ${dev##*/} $1 - if [ $have_iwconfig = true -a $iwconfig ]; then - iwconfig ${dev##*/} $iwconfig || ret=1 - fi -if [ $have_iwpriv = true -a $iwpriv ]; then - iwpriv ${dev##*/} $iwpriv || ret=1 - fi +for dev in $phy/device/net/*; do +printf Turning powersave for %s %s... ${dev##*/} $1 +if [ $have_iwconfig = true -a $iwconfig ]; then +iwconfig ${dev##*/} $iwconfig || ret=1 +fi +if [ $have_iwpriv = true -a $iwpriv ]; then +iwpriv ${dev##*/} $iwpriv || ret=1 +fi +done if [ $iwlevel ]; then - echo $iwlevel $dev/device/power_level || ret=1 - fi +echo $iwlevel $phy/device/power_level || ret=1 +fi [ $ret -eq 0 ] echo Done. || echo Failed. done } @@ -76,4 +76,4 @@ case $1 in *) exit $NA ;; esac -exit 0 \ No newline at end of file +exit 0 --- System information. --- Architecture: amd64 Kernel: Linux 2.6.38-1-amd64 Debian Release: wheezy/sid 500 unstablewww.debian-multimedia.org 500 unstableftp.de.debian.org 500 testing ftp.de.debian.org 100 experimental-snapshots qt-kde.debian.net 1 experimentalftp.de.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed =-+-=== powermgmt-base| 1.31 kbd | OR console-tools | 1:0.2.3dbs-70 Recommends (Version) | Installed =-+-=== vbetool | 1.1-2 procps| 1:3.2.8-10 hdparm| 9.32-1 Suggests(Version) | Installed =-+-=== cpufrequtils | 007-1 wireless-tools| 30~pre9-5 ethtool | 1:2.6.37-1 radeontool| -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#618872: Wildcard regression in mod_vhost_ldap 2.0.6

When plugged in for the first time, they act like a flash storage and start installing the driver from there. If the driver is already installed, the storage device vanishes and a new device, such as an USB modem, shows up. This is called the ZeroCD feature. . On Debian, this is not needed, since the driver is included as a Linux kernel module, such as usbserial. However, the device still shows up as usb-storage by default. usb-modeswitch solves that issue by sending the command which actually performs the switching of the device from usb-storage to usbserial. . This package contains the commands data needed for usb-modeswitch. Bug#532121: Status of #532121
Dear James and Andreas, Jakub Wilk asked me to clarify the situation of #532121 [1]. Is python-crypto really orphaned or was the RFA bug left open unintentionally? If it's really orphaned, I'd be interested to adopt it. Otherwise I'd reset the bug the former state and remove my package from m.d.n [2]. I didn't mean to hijack the package. Bug#618882: python-qt4: crashes plasma-desktop
Package: python-qt4 Version: 4.8.3-2 Severity: normal Hi, I'm not sure if this is a duplicate of #615626 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=615626 but I think that this was only introduced with 4.8.3-2. After logging in plasma-desktop crashes. I already reported this to KDE at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=268875 indicating that it might be debian-related. Downgrading python-qt4 again to 4.8.3-1 appears to solve the issue. It's sort of stupid that I should need a distribution site for them; they should just gone into mainline. But that's a different story... I would just like to grab something so that I can push a new version to the Debian repositories (perhaps to experimental, if you think that it is not proper for public consumption). OK, well, I can try making an updated patch. But as long as I can't find a DHT node to bootstrap against, it's sort of hard to test. :-) FWIW, I tried checking against the version in stable, but that seemingly can't deal with Magnet links at all. /* Steinar */ -- Homepage: http://www.sesse.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#618884: gnome-shell: problem moving windows from one screen to the other when they are vertically arranged
Package: gnome-shell Version: 2.91.91-1 Severity: normal Hello, I have a laptop with dual screen setup. The external screen is above my laptop screen. This setup worked not optimally but fine with the previous version of gnome-shell, but now I'm unable to move a window from one screen to the other. The title bar refuses to go over the separation. It works ok when the screens are configured to be side by side, I have the problem only when they are one above the other. Bug#618887: dirvish: Alias to / interpeted as no alias
Package: dirvish Version: 1.2.1-1.1 Severity: normal Tags: patch When having a line in the vault config like: tree: /root/backupmnt/ / It behaves like tree: /root/backupmnt/ The alias to / is ignored. This means that a file at the root of the transfer named test, ends up in the index named /root/backupmnt/test Whereas one would expect the index file to contain this name as /test because of the alias option. Attached patch fixes that behaviour. Currently, dirvish does the following things: - remove trailing slashes - if alias is empty, set it equal to path, the first argument to the tree option. By reversing the order of these two operations, the behaviour ought to be as expected for all cases, including alias to root, if you ask me. This File Transfer Protocol daemon supports also hidden directories, virtual hosts, and per-directory .ftpaccess files. It uses a single main configuration file, with a syntax similar to Apache. . Because of the advanced design, anonymous-FTP directories can have an arbitrary internal structure (bin, lib, etc, and special files are not needed). Advanced features such as multiple password files and upload/download ratios are also supported. . This package contains the daemon and all main modules used for common configurations. Bug#618890: flightgear should depend on fgfs-aircraft-base and fgfs-models-base
Package: flightgear Version: 2.0.0-3 Severity: important The flightgear package only recommends fgfs-aircraft-base and fgfs-models-base packages. Because of that, when one doesn't 'treat recommends as depends' the packages are not installed. The effect is that after running fgfs one gets the following errors. 1. If the fgfs-aircraft-base is missing, the fgfs displays this message in console and quits immedietely: Cannot find specified aircraft: c172p Config option parsing failed ... 2. If the fgfs-models-base is missing, the fgfs starts to load and then quits with a Segmentation Fault: Failed to load file: Models/Aircraft/marker.xml Segmentation Fault Regards, Tomek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Yes, now it is more importandt because if I startmy FVWM which swallows 3 instances (onbord and two Audigy ZS) of wmmixer I have to check where the right mixer is If you can correct this bug it would be a very great service. I am open for immediately testing if it works under Squeeze (production system) Ok, taking a look on the wmmixer, this application is developed to support *one* mixer device, and show this device in the dock widget. The configuration file accepts channels using a number: addchannel 0, and 0 is the first channel of the selected device. You can change the device using the correct parameter when you launch the application. You need (else, correct me) that one dock supports multiple soundcards, then: 1. The parameter (-m) to select the device must be changed to support multiple devices 2. Because in the configuration file you select only the channel 0 as a number, and not the device, the configuration file needs to be changed to support multiple soundcards. Then, should accept something like addchannel 0,1 for the souncard 0 and the channel 1 3. You need to check the device list sort, because if one device was in /dev/mixer and now is /dev/mixer0, then the channels are affecting to other device. 4. Because now you have multiple devices, the application must to know what device is selected, and need to have a list of devices. In the source, the class WMMixer has only one device and should be changed to an array. For this reason, abstraction between the devices and the user interfaces is needed to do that. After read the source, to do that, we need to rewrite the full application. Is possible to do that? probably. But the problem is that the current application and the new application will be completely different. In my oppinion, this bug is not a real bug, is not a little patch, is a new application design, and the bug should be closed. I'm undecided, and atm extremely burnt out with real life work, so am looking for some advice. 08_pcsc_dynamic.patch is untested by anyone, not very beautiful looking. Also it seems up to me to push to upstream, which I'm not totally confident about. Further to the problem, upstream build system seems not to add '-ldl' to LIBS for BSD configurations. For example: $ grep -A1 -B1 '\-ldl' wpa_supplicant/Makefile ifndef CONFIG_DRIVER_BSD LIBS += -ldl endif -- ifneq ($(CONFIG_L2_PACKET), freebsd) LIBS += -ldl endif I do not know why this is the case, and I think this will come up if I was to push this patch upstream. There are multiple places in which this linker flag gets added to LIBS for non BSD configurations which is why we did not witness this build failure on linux before now. Attached is what I drafted up in working copy of pkg-wpa SVN in response to the FTBFS notifications some days ago, comments about how to proceed are very welcome. I know Stephan's inclination is to drop the patch and let someone with the hardware and know how fix up the problem in the future. Bug#607035: doesn't happen anymore in squeeze, but flash comes up under about:blank
Le mardi 15 mars 2011, à 19:03:35 -0700, Mark a écrit : The specific problem with Facebook has not happened in a while. The google news fast flip section still does this, it comes up under about:blank. As do a lot of Flash objects, for instance if you go to http://www.creatureshop.com/ and enable script for creatureshop.com, the second bar immediately below the main menu and above the text comes up under about:blank and is blocked. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the bug. I don't have a facebook account, and google news and creatureshop.com work fine. Also, about:blank is on noscript default whitelist. Bug#618719: FTBFS on kfreebsd: ../src/utils/pcsc_funcs.o: undefined reference to symbol 'dlsym@@GLIBC_2.3'

There are multiple places in which this linker flag gets added to LIBS for non BSD configurations which is why we did not witness this build failure on linux before now. Bug#618900: xserver-xorg-video-mga: does not work with MGA G100 chip
Package: xserver-xorg-video-mga Version: 1:1.4.11.dfsg-4+squeeze1 Severity: important When starting X from console with startx video changes to graphic mode, but the picture on the screen is all messed up. I can not see anything sane. Bottom half of screen is black, only upper half is used by X but it is so messed up that I can not recognize anything where to click. The computer is actually working, so I can switch to console with CTRL-ALT-F1. But at this time the screen is messed up on console too. The screen is full of some random symbols [letters/puctuation marks] and all those letter kind of dance [to me it seems like sync signal is bad]. I can type some commands but and see that some characters on screen are changing but it does not echo character that I type but some random character. And command do get executed. I can for example type: $ sudo reboot and computer do reboot, but I can not see what I am typing. Basically at this point computer is not usable either in graphic mode or on console. Just to make sure my graphic card or monitor are not dead I installed Lenny again and all worked well. If I use 'vesa' as driver instead of 'mga' the graphical desktop shows OK but it is not usable because the useage of CPU by X is 100% and it takes ages to open any window [xterm or xclock for example]. For fastest fix that comes to mind now is to use driver from lenny. Is it possible? Or can I download and recompile lennys driver to work in squeeze? Bug#618901: coolkey: Doesn't work with Iceweasel or Epiphany
Package: coolkey Version: 1.1.0-8 Severity: normal This is probably a grave bug, but I want to confirm that there's at least someone out there that can use the package. In Firefox, in the Security Devices dialog, I can go to the load dialog, add /usr/lib/pkcs11/libcoolkeypk11.so and press OK, and it says unable to load module. My guess is that there's a dependency of coolkey that was upgraded (pcsc looks like a good candiate to me), but the package can't be rebuilt from source in sid, so my testing has been very limited so far. When the slapd process has hung, I see the following backtrace in gdb: (gdb) bt full #0 0x7fa50aca8be5 in pthread_join (threadid=140346751547136, thread_return=0x0) at pthread_join.c:89 __ignore = value optimized out _tid = 10340 _buffer = {__routine = 0x7fa50aca8ab0 cleanup, __arg = 0x7fa506457d28, __canceltype = 105216464, __prev = 0x0} oldtype = 0 result = value optimized out #1 0x0042d72c in slapd_daemon () at /home/devel/openldap/trunk/servers/slapd/daemon.c:2842 listener_tid = 140346751547136 rc = 0 #2 0x0041ae6a in main (argc=9, argv=0x7fffd2f2e5b0) at /home/devel/openldap/trunk/servers/slapd/main.c:961 i = 9 no_detach = 0 rc = -12 urls = 0x7df0c0 ldap:/// ldapi:/// username = 0x7df100 root groupname = 0x7df0e0 ldap sandbox = 0x0 syslogUser = 160 configfile = 0x7df120 /etc/ldap/slapd.conf configdir = 0x0 serverName = value optimized out scp = value optimized out scp_entry = value optimized out debug_unknowns = 0x0 syslog_unknowns = 0x0 slapd_pid_file_unlink = 1 slapd_args_file_unlink = 1 firstopt = value optimized out __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ = main (gdb) This suggests that there may be some kind of thread locking issue occurring which is causing the main process to hang. I have raised this with upstream here: http://www.openldap.org/lists/openldap-technical/201103/msg00175.html and confirmed that the same issue occurs on a vanilla build of 2.4.23. Further testing here shows that issue appears to be resolved in 2.4.24. This is an extremely critical DOS issue and means that Squeeze's 2.4.23 packages are unusable in a production environment. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages slapd depends on: ii adduser 3.112+nmu2 add and remove users and groups ii coreutils 8.5-1GNU core utilities ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.36.1 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.11.2-10Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libdb4.84.8.30-2 Berkeley v4.8 Database Libraries [ ii libgnutls26 2.8.6-1 the GNU TLS library - runtime libr ii libldap-2.4-2 2.4.23-7 OpenLDAP libraries ii libltdl72.2.6b-2 A system independent dlopen wrappe ii libperl5.10 5.10.1-17shared Perl library ii libsasl2-2 2.1.23.dfsg1-7 Cyrus SASL - authentication abstra ii libslp1 1.2.1-7.8OpenSLP libraries ii libuuid12.17.2-9 Universally Unique ID library ii libwrap07.6.q-19 Wietse Venema's TCP wrappers libra ii lsb-base3.2-23.2squeeze1 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii perl [libmime-base64-pe 5.10.1-17Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii psmisc 22.11-1 utilities that use the proc file s ii unixodbc2.2.14p2-1 ODBC tools libraries Versions of packages slapd recommends: ii libsasl2-modules 2.1.23.dfsg1-7 Cyrus SASL - pluggable authenticat Versions of packages slapd suggests: ii ldap-utils2.4.23-7 OpenLDAP utilities -- debconf information excluded -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#618905: references obsolete hal init script
Package: acpid Version: 1:2.0.8-3 Severity: normal Hi, in hal 0.5.14-4 (wheezy) I changed it to use D-Bus activation so it is started on demand. That means there is no longer a hal sysv init script. As a result: 1.) The Should-Start: hal in the acpid LSB header is no longer useful, As it is not a fatal error though, you can safely keep it and it's just a little cruft you are carrying around. I'd definitely drop it for wheezy+1 2.) The postinst tries to restart hal if it find the init script. I guess with acpid using netlink now this can be dropped completely? Retrieving messages, Refreshing folder, and Checking for new mail just spin at 0% complete no matter how long I wait. Is evolution marked as online or offline? (on the lower left corner) Do you use network-manager? I assumed it was online since I did not take it offline before the upgrade. I don't know for sure though. I did not have evolution running during the upgrade. I started evolution after the upgrade. Yes, I use network-manager. You're just using plain imap, no such thing as evolution-exchange/mapi? Yes, I am using just plain imap. Regards, Because I needed to have a working evolution, I downgraded to the version in stable. The downgrade wasn't very easy as synaptic kept wanting to uninstall packages like evolution-dbg and gnome-dbg and libhtml3???, etc. then it would say I had broken packages, ... Eventually, I was able to downgrade. I think at one point I had to uninstall evolution and maybe a few other things like ekiga. Ekiga must have had some dependency on something that had to be removed due to the downgrades. After I downgraded, when I opened evolution, I noticed I didn't have my saved local mail folders, they were all gone. I looked at the date on the .evolution folder in my home directory and noticed that it had a recent date and time that was sometime during the upgrade/downgrade process. So, something during the upgrade/downgrade process had deleted and recreated my .evolution directory. However, evolution didn't go through the wizard process or anything as if there were no .evolution directory. It shouldn't delete my local .evolution directory if I upgrade or uninstall evolution or kill an unresponsive evolution. So, I shut down evolution and got my previous .evolution directory back from backup. I rebooted my computer to make sure nothing was cached or anything. Then I started the downgraded evolution with the restored .evolution directory and mail works now. I have pinned the downgraded evolution to the version from stable. Since it caused me so much grief and work, I am not very anxious to try again. At least not on my main computer. Brent

Bug#614765: liboss-salsa-asound2: dependencies problems with libasound2
liboss-salsa-asound2 tries to provide a replacement to libasound2 by declaring a Provides: libasound2 and a Conflicts: libasound2 Unfortunately, 1889 packages in squeeze absolutely need (we say 'strongly depend on' [2]) the real package libasound2, and not the virtual one (because the declared dependencies are versioned); actually, for the same reason, a total of 2531 packages are incompatible (we say 'strongly conflict' [1]) with liboss-salsa-asound2. On the other hand, there is *no* package that strongly depends on liboss-salsa-asound2, so the problem is with liboss-salsa-asound2, and not with the other packages. I may humbly suggest one of two solutions: - either drop liboss-salsa-asound2 - or change the metadata by simply allowing liboss-salsa-asound2 to overwrite files belonging to libasound2 (if this is enough that /usr/lib/libasound.so.2 is the one contained in this package for everything to work fine) Hope this helps --Roberto P.S.: this problem has been discovered automatically using the algorithms for computing strong dependencies and strong conflicts among packages, described in the papers [1] and [2] below. Grumble. I apologize for the noise, I should have been more thorough. Apparently somewhere in the mists of time, while trying to solve things myself, I decided to hand-edit the startx script. And while I did reinstall everything X-related, I apparently did not reinstall xinit itself. A simple sh -x on the startx script showed that it wasn't even trying to run /usr/bin/X... Again, my sincerest apologies for taking your time. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Bug#614765: liboss-salsa-asound2: dependencies problems with libasound2
Roberto Di Cosmo, le Sat 19 Mar 2011 14:46:01 +0100, a écrit : liboss-salsa-asound2 tries to provide a replacement to libasound2 by declaring a Provides: libasound2 and a Conflicts: libasound2 Yes. And fails to, that's a known wontfix issue. Unfortunately, 1889 packages in squeeze absolutely need (we say 'strongly depend on' [2]) the real package libasound2, and not the virtual one (because the declared dependencies are versioned); actually, for the same reason, a total of 2531 packages are incompatible (we say 'strongly conflict' [1]) with liboss-salsa-asound2. Unfortunately, yes. On the other hand, there is *no* package that strongly depends on liboss-salsa-asound2, Sure, since in principle people use alsa, not oss-under-alsa (they should be fixed into simply using oss instead, if they did). so the problem is with liboss-salsa-asound2, and not with the other packages. Agreed, but still wontfix. I may humbly suggest one of two solutions: - either drop liboss-salsa-asound2 Why? It can be useful in the cases where it can be installed. And we _do_ need it on kfreebsd hurd. - or change the metadata by simply allowing liboss-salsa-asound2 to overwrite files belonging to libasound2 (if this is enough that /usr/lib/libasound.so.2 is the one contained in this package for everything to work fine) The libasound.so.2 provided by libsalsa clearly doesn't provide enough support for everything to work fine: the announced compatibility is only 1.0.5, and there's no seq support. So yes, it provides poor support for Linux, but that's an upstream lack of feature, and not a reason for dropping it completely.
