Hi Paolo, Do you intend to adopt this package (to maintain it for a longer time) or do you just want to do one update now ? Depending on that, you should retitle bug 614275 from O to ITA and set yourself as the owner, or modify the package at mentors to include QA upload. Bug#704035: release state of tuxcmd
Hi Tomas, I am considering to take up maintenance of the tuxcmd package in Debian [0] which is currently unmaintained [1]. We recently started a package team to support packages written in pascal [2] and I think the Debian tuxcmd package should have it's home there. Looking at the sourceforge website [3], the latest release I see is 0.6.70 (2009), while your git repository seems to feature up to 0.6.78. Could you please elaborate on your release strategy? I am fine with taking git tags if that is how you currently work. You seem to not have been too busy with tuxcmd lately (one commit in the last 8 months). How do you see the future of tuxcmd? I assume you are in maintenance mode. If I would get tuxcmd code related bugs in Debian, are you likely to help solving them, or would it mean that I had to deep dive into the code myself (not that coding is a problem per se, but of course you are way more familiar with the code). Bug#713979: su: kill child process group on signal, not just immediate child

It seems to me that the terminal, after receiving a Ctrl-C Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-\ sends the corresponding signal to the foreground process (?). The word you are looking for there is group. And in fact, if I run strace on the python3.2 command above, it shows /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/gi/_gi.cpython-32mu.so as one of the file locations it tries to open, but not the multiarched version. This, in turn, causes python-distutils-extra to FTBFS against rebuilt python3- gi. 3.2 never had the multiarch lookup for extensions enabled. I think I enabled it once and found some other effects on packaging because of the changed file names. It looks like the new pybuild implementation renames these for 3.2 as well. Now that we did stop supporting 3.2, I don't want to change that again, and it's probably better to fix dh-python that it even does the right thing for backports. Quoting Jeremy Bicha (2013-08-02 18:16:59) This issue, while valid, isn't serious. I disagree. It's impossible to build sflphone in Debian unstable which means it's impossible to fix bugs (security or otherwise) in that package. That makes ucommon in its current form unsuitable for release. Because of the soname transition that can't be completed No, sflphone having FTBFS renders _sflphone_ unsuitable for release. ucommon has other uses than for sflphone. I'll mention it in case it's related: since the very same upgrade + removal initially described on this bug, the screen is sometimes (always?) not locked on resume, and the battery applet in the panel sometimes gets stuck in an obsolete state (e.g. pretending my battery is charging while I've been off the grid for one hour or so). Correct me if I have lost sight of the essential point of this report, but it seems to come down to Printing a test page on an HP Laserjet is very slow. If the slowness is mainly to do with a buggy PostScript interpreter on the printer I wouldn't see that as the responsibily of cups-filters. In general there is a way round it by changing the renderer but maybe there is a case (wishlist) for changing default-testpage.pdf to something which does not produce such large PS files with pdftops. Bug#718620: gdm-simple-greeter: users list collapsed to 2px hight
Package: gdm3 Version: 3.4.1-9 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, since upgrading gdm3, gdm-simple-greeter has strange behaviour: The list of users (I have 2 here) is somehow shown, but collapes to 2px height, with only a blue 1px line and a blue 1px line with white dashes is shown, like the border of a selected element in a list. No button is visible (is there supposed to be one?). Hitting cursor-up or cursor down on the keyboard changes something, that is the dashed line jumpes up or down 1px. After hitting Enter on the keyboard, one of the users is selected for login and I get the normal dialog showing the user name, the field to enter the password, a drop-down field to choose the session, buttons to cancel and log in. The selection of the user is repeatable, that is, in the user list, navigating up and down in a certain order brings up the login dialog for the 2 users and the dialog for others I'm not aware that I have changed something in the config. Last thing I did was upgrading testing after release, which of course drew in a log of new packages. I think 3.4.1-8 did not have the problem, but I cannot downgrade due to dependency problems with libdconf1/libdconf0 which I cannot resolve manually. apt-logs say that I had installed 3.4.1-8 until 2013-07-01. I waited for some update hitting testing soon, this is why I report only now. I have some 10 packages from unstable installed, which I think are unrelated to the problem. Anyway, list is attached. I have nothing installed from experimental. Bug#718604: libjpeg-progs: djpeg broken for some jpegs
On Sat, Aug 03, 2013 at 12:48:24AM +, Alan Curry wrote: Package: libjpeg-progs Version: 8d-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch upstream This report will mostly be a duplicate of #74087, closed almost 13 years ago, without any explanation that I can find in the bug log, and without actually fixing it as far as I can tell from the packages from that era on archive.debian.org. The problem now is as it was then: djpeg can't handle all jpegs. The ones it doesn't handle are the ones encoded as YCCK or CMYK. The bug log for #74087 doesn't mention YCCK or CMYK, so it's possible that the problem just wasn't understood back then. But the sample included in the original bug report is a YCCK jpeg. Yes this is my fault. I closed it because it was not Debian specific in anyway, so I assumed the JPEG image was invalid. This time, there's a patch. The patch has been seen before too, in a slightly different form, targeted at libjpeg-turbo. It adds a couple of conversion functions to the library, allowing clients like djpeg to get RGB output regardless of the input. http://sourceforge.net/p/libjpeg-turbo/patches/15/ It was rejected there, but I hope history won't repeat itself here. It makes no sense that djpeg (the Decode JPEG program from the de facto JPEG reference implementation!) can't decode all jpegs. The people in the libjpeg-turbo discussion didn't even seem to realize they were deciding to keep their version of djpeg crippled forever. The conversion code could be moved into djpeg, leaving the library untouched, but djpeg isn't the only place something like this is needed. I'd also like to see xli not choke on these jpegs. If the conversion is supported by the library, then adding YCCK-jpeg support to djpeg and xli is a 3-line patch for each program. If the conversion function is banned from the library like the libjpeg-turbo people seem to want, xli and djpeg both need the same big mess of pixel-shuffling code inserted into them, and so will the next program. That's just a stupid way to do it. Dear Alan, I have forwarded your bug report to the upstream maintainer. Thanks for taking the time to work on this. However, I have a question: how do you generate such JPEG images ? Would there be benefit for libjpeg to be able to do that ? Bug#625940: /usr/bin/debcheckout: [debcheckout] make “--git-track='*'” the default ?

Bug#718628: Cannot login as different user after accidentally selecting the wrong name
Package: gdm3 Version: 3.4.1-9 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, it seems that gdm3 doesn't recover from a wrong user selection on the login screen. The only way for a non-root and system-savvy user is a complete reboot. I'm writing this from the perspective of my wife and kids. My kids wouldn't even be able to find the reboot option. From this perspective this bug rates important because it effectively brings down the system. *** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? Normal boot-up of the system, gdm3 login window showing with user list. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Selecting a wrong user name from the list, and subsequently clicking Cancel hoping to get back to the initial screen with the full user list displayed * What was the outcome of this action? User display window collapses to a thin blue horizontal line, and after hitting Enter gdm3 keeps asking the password for the wrong user, with no way of selecting the correct user. * What outcome did you expect instead? Coming back to the initial login screen. *** End of the template - remove these lines *** -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.9-1-686-pae (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages gdm3 depends on: ii accountsservice 0.6.34-1 ii adduser 3.113+nmu3 ii dconf-gsettings-backend 0.16.1-1 ii dconf-tools 0.16.1-1 ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.50 ii gir1.2-freedesktop 1.36.0-2+b1 ii gir1.2-glib-2.0 1.36.0-2+b1 ii gnome-session [x-session-manager] 3.4.2.1-4 ii gnome-session-bin 3.4.2.1-4 ii gnome-session-fallback [x-session-manager] 3.4.2.1-4 ii gnome-settings-daemon 3.4.2+git20121218.7c1322-6+b1 ii gnome-terminal [x-terminal-emulator]3.8.3-1 ii gsettings-desktop-schemas 3.4.2-3 ii libaccountsservice0 0.6.34-1 ii libatk1.0-0 2.8.0-2 ii libattr11:2.4.47-1 ii libaudit0 1:1.7.18-1.1 ii libc6 2.17-7 ii libcairo-gobject2 1.12.14-4 ii libcairo2 1.12.14-4 ii libcanberra-gtk3-0 0.30-2 ii libcanberra00.30-2 ii libdbus-1-3 1.6.12-1 ii libdbus-glib-1-20.100.2-1 ii libfontconfig1 2.10.2-2 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.28.2-1 ii libglib2.0-02.36.3-3 ii libglib2.0-bin 2.36.3-3 ii libgtk-3-0 3.8.2-3 ii libpam-modules 1.1.3-9 ii libpam-runtime 1.1.3-9 ii libpam0g1.1.3-9 ii libpango-1.0-0 1.32.5-5+b1 ii libpangocairo-1.0-0 1.32.5-5+b1 ii librsvg2-common 2.36.4-2 ii libselinux1 2.1.13-2 ii libupower-glib1 0.9.20-2 ii libwrap07.6.q-24 ii libx11-62:1.6.0-1 ii libxau6 1:1.0.8-1 ii libxdmcp6 1:1.1.1-1 ii libxklavier16 5.2.1-1 ii libxrandr2 2:1.4.1-1 ii lsb-base4.1+Debian12 ii lxsession [x-session-manager] 0.4.6.1-4 ii lxterminal [x-terminal-emulator]0.1.11-4 ii metacity [x-window-manager] 1:2.34.13-1 ii openbox [x-window-manager] 3.5.0-7 ii policykit-1-gnome 0.105-2 ii rxvt-unicode [x-terminal-emulator] 9.18-2 ii upower 0.9.20-2 ii x11-common 1:7.7+3 ii x11-xserver-utils 7.7~3 ii xfce4-session [x-session-manager] 4.10.1-1 ii xfwm4 [x-window-manager]4.10.1-1 Versions of packages gdm3 recommends: ii at-spi2-core 2.9.4-1 ii desktop-base 7.0.3 ii gnome-icon-theme 3.8.2-2 ii gnome-icon-theme-symbolic 3.8.2.2-2 ii x11-xkb-utils 7.7~1 ii xserver-xephyr 2:1.12.4-6 ii xserver-xorg 1:7.7+3 ii

Bug#718577: libc6: Libc6/libm-2.17 almost two times slower than 2.13 in trigonometric calculations
Dear Carlos, One more time, thank you again for your quick and detailed answer... I really appreciate... I do not want to voice my opposition to changes to fix correctness over performances because this does not make sense: I fully agree on the fact that quickly obtaining false result(s) is useless. However, before posting, the first thing I verified is the accuracy of the results in both versions of the libm. I still cannot observe any deviation in the results... However I (only) intensively use sin(), cos(), sqrt() and fabs(). This might explain why I cannot see any improvement in the computation of some small finite set of inputs. I should also mention that the application on which I am working does not require high precision (we exclusively use float and no double for instance) and is mainly focused on a tradeoff between speed and accuracy... This might also explain the huge variation in the durations of the programs based on the two versions of libm. I would like to do something to help improving libm (for instance) but I am really not competent in this field... All I can do is to provide a factice example of program, but I am sure that you have a set of much more accurate and detailed benchmarks... I am also working on calculation servers (exclusively) based on x86-64, so the fact that the overhead is significantly reduced in 2.18 (almost back to the original performance) is *REALLY* a *GREAT RESULT* for me! Sorry I have caused any offence by my remark about the negative impact on the trust in linux in its ability to stay competitive/efficient in this kind of computations ... The performances obtained under Linux and libc6 (and...) are remarkable and the abovementioned results obtained with libm2-17 were really disappointing. I see Linux (not only) as a competitive/efficient solution for a long time, even if it is not its main objective. I can experimentally prove this one more time with the abovementioned program and I could not believe in the latest results (with libm2-17)... I fully agree when you say that the math library is the first target! My problem is just one additional (real-world) example where, with no efficient and accurate libm, nothing can be achieved! I consider this as *the* solution, and will no longer bother you with my comments about libc6/libm. Thank you again, sorry for all these (long) mails, BB 2013/8/3 Carlos O'Donell car...@systemhalted.org On Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 7:45 PM, Hal BugsBuster hal.bugsbus...@gmail.com wrote: I cannot fully explain what I am doing exactly but I am working on soft real-time avionic problems and the use of libm2-17 is ... IMPOSSIBLE since it multiplies by two the duration of all our computations... I'm sorry to hear that, please feel free to volunteer your time to help upstream glibc or debian ensure that issues like this get fixed and tested quickly. Alternatively you can get involved to voice your opposition to changes to fix correctness over performances. Do you mean that all these catastrophic overheads are no longer existing in libm-2.18 ? The overhead depends on the rounding mode you are in. If you are using the default rounding mode and are on x86 or x86-64, then the overhead is significantly reduced in 2.18 (almost back to the original performance). In this case, please do not read the following sentences, this is really a good result for me. You don't really want all of 2.18, just the fix to bring performance back for certain libm functions. Otherwise - I cannot believe it - but I should mention that I am just using mathematic libraries as a beginner and I do not want to enter in sophisticated modes of the libm (no time/money for this) as well as the worldwide company for which I am working... and I fully disagree on the fact that the tradeoff is justified this is absolutely not true in my case and I do not use specific rounding modes, just the default options of the libm and gcc... Don't upgrade to 2.17 then. Wait for the bug to get fixed. Fortunately, till now same results are obtained via libm-2.13 and libm-2.17... but how can I explain/justify that it needs almost twice as much time? It is just IMPOSSIBLE/INCREDIBLE! The same results for some small finite set of inputs you tested? Upstream needs to make sure it returns correct results for the entire set of inputs in all modes. In this particular case we chose returning a correct answer over returning an incorrect answer (albeit quickly). This fixed a serious and real problem that other users were facing. Once we had that problem fixed we then proceeded to fix the performance and to try and restore it to original levels without returning incorrect answers. I think that this will have a *SERIOUS* negative impact on the trust in linux in its ability to stay competitive/efficient in this kind of computations... I disagree. Linux has nothing to do with this. This is all in the GNU C Library. You

This is used only for the linux-source-3.10 package (and its successors), which contain xz-compressed files and are therefore not significantly compressible. All our other binary packages use xz compression. Unfortunately the resulting binary package does not conform to the format documented at man 5 deb. It contains a data.tar.gz memeber, that is not a valid gzip file. dpkg-deb should produce the correct extension for uncompressed data members. Ah right, although zlib handles the no compression part just fine, so does «gzip -f». In any case I've to say I've always kind of wondered about the usefulness of -z0 for gzip, because it's an ofuscated way to just say -Znone. Unfortunately dak (and presumably other tools) do not accept compression of 'none'. This workaround was suggested when I asked on #debian-ftp. Ben. Bug#718604: [rlw...@sdf.org: Bug#718604: libjpeg-progs: djpeg broken for some jpegs]
Dear Bill I received the following bug report, and I very much appreciated your opinion about it. http://bugs.debian.org/718604 I'm very thankful that this subject is brought up now, because there have been clarifications in the color support department in recent IJG JPEG development, and I'll use the chance here to report about them. First, djpeg handles INTERCHANGE JPEG streams, it does not claim to support anything else! The term JPEG FILE INTERCHANGE FORMAT (JFIF) primarily refers to the range of supported color space encodings, and it will be redefined by IJG in the upcoming IJG JPEG 9a release, see http://www.infai.org/jpeg/ This is the major new feature of that new libjpeg version! (Interestingly, http://www.w3.org/Graphics/JPEG/ claims that JFIF was invented by IJG anyway, although http://www.jpeg.org/jpeg/ tells a bit different...) The YCCK/CMYK color space encodings are actually NOT part of JFIF! The new redefined JFIF version 2 refers ONLY to the IEC 61966-2-1 (aka sRGB) standard which contains unambiguous definitions for various RGB and YCC color space encodings, which are therefore suitable for common image interchange and which are therefore all supported by libjpeg 9a. See the new jccolor.c/jdcolor.c modules in new version as given above (and cjpeg got a corresponding new -bgycc switch, see also usage.txt for description). Note that this version is the first REAL SOURCE code regarding this subject, because it contains exact mathematical derivations for the conversions, which are lacking in prior versions and in all other so-called source codes! It is interesting that with this approach we can support ALL color with ANY gamut without going into complicated color management issues! We want to do IMAGE CODING and COMMON INTERCHANGE here, not device-specific COLOR MANAGEMENT! The IEC 61966-2-1 standard allows us to separate these different issues, so that we can constrain our attention on image coding and interchange, and not need to open up Pandora's box with all kinds of issues regarding color management functions. These are different subjects. The YCCK/CMYK color spaces, while NOT part of the current JFIF, are supported to SOME EXTENT by the JPEG library. A full support would need to include some sort of color management functions (see later), and we actually don't want to do that here. So what we actually do is to provide a PARTIAL support for YCCK/CMYK handling, as far as it fits in our constraints, and leave the other part to do for the application interface. This works well if you understand this division of labor. I have done this in the Jpegcrop sample application, see: http://jpegclub.org/jpegcrop.txt Release history === 2013.07: - IJG JPEG 9a develop version code base. 2013.06: - Add approximate CMYK/YCCK display support. Note here that it says APPROXIMATE support! It uses a code for the conversion which is similar to your suggested patch version, find it here in the application interface modules for the JPEG library in the Jpegcrop source packages as given on page http://jpegclub.org/jpegtran/ (file jpegdib.cpp in the Windows version, file jpegimage.cpp in the Unix version). Note that this code is only a simplified version for approximate support, it does not give you the true results, and that is the reason why we must not include it in the reference libjpeg! I will give you a nice example in next message. You will notice that the approximated display shows quite oversaturated colors. This may be acceptable for fast image viewing and for tools like Jpegcrop where the display has only secondary function for operation, but it is not the true thing. I assume that for true conversion at least the 'K' channel has to undergo a special transfer function, similar to an 'A' channel in alpha modes, and this is best handled in a dedicated color management framework, or a display system which supports dedicated CMYK pixel maps (see later). The BTS indicates that #717154 only applies to unstable, and is thus new. That's perfectly logical, since the open-vm-tools-dkms binary package only exists in unstable - there's therefore no way it can be buggy in testing, and any RC bug it contains is thus a regression. If this bug only applies to the -dkms binary package then it _is_ a regression and relative to testing and thus _should_ be stopping the migration, not hacked around. Clarification would be appreciated, so that the bug metadata can be set appropriately. Debug log for the request says: 2013/08/03 11:23:30 [debug] 11668#0: *1 fastcgi param: SCRIPT_FILENAME: /var/www/rrd/rrd.cgi/ [...] 2013/08/03 11:23:30 [debug] 11668#0: *1 fastcgi param: SCRIPT_FILENAME: /var/www/rrd/rrd.cgi [...] 2013/08/03 11:23:30 [error] 11668#0: *1 FastCGI sent in stderr: Cannot chdir to script directory (/var/www/rrd/rrd.cgi) while reading response header from upstream, [...] When I swap the order, or comment out the fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME in the /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params file, I get a single log entry for the variable: 2013/08/03 11:27:33 [debug] 12112#0: *1 fastcgi param: SCRIPT_FILENAME: /var/www/rrd/rrd.cgi And everything works fine. I see no obvious reason why one fastcgi_param wouldn't override the other. Indeed, http://wiki.nginx.org/HttpFastcgiModule#fastcgi_param says: Directives set in current level clear any previously defined directives for the current level. Please fix this. TIA. -- 2. Bug#714341: apache2: Disabled Sites Still Served
Hello In my experience, that happens when I reload the wrong httpd, getting confused by the VMs. Maybe that happened to you... Can you please: - Check that the link has been removed from /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ ? In version 2.2, a2dissite is just deleting the link there. - Did you try a restart? - Did you try to stop the sever, check apache is off, then start again? Please check using curl, so that any other other instance of apache2 (or another web server) is detected. If that still doesn't work, you'll have to check your configuration files. Bug#718604: [rlw...@sdf.org: Bug#718604: libjpeg-progs: djpeg broken for some jpegs]
Dear Bill Here is the example: http://www.berlininart.com/timeless-beauty-at-co-berlin/ (Teen Vogue - preview above, full image below - this falls under art...) http://www.berlininart.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/1330_Kim.jpg You can download and open the full image with Jpegcrop and see the approximate display. Other viewers like XnView or FastStone give similar results (on Windows, also using IJG library). But with IrfanView and the Windows integrated Image Preview component the colors appear more correct. These tools apparently use a special CMYK bitmap mode in the Windows display system which runs over kindof color management. I have found that apparently the newer Windows graphics display interfaces GDI-Plus or WPF have such mode, and I plan to investigate that further and also include such option later in Jpegcrop to get more clarity in this regard. Interesting: If I load the image with IrfanView under Windows 98 (good to have such oldies available for such kind of tests), IrfanView also does only the approximate (oversaturated) display, because the system function is apparently not yet available on this system. Also interesting: If I convert the image to arithmetic coding (with new Jpegcrop now possible), IrfanView can no longer display the image. That means that IrfanView apparently lets Windows do the complete decode in CMYK/YCCK case, which doesn't support arithmetic coding yet (IrfanView otherwise does). Here I would try to make it better than IrfanView by letting the system only convert the bitmap received from own codec from CMYK to RGB. Note that all this consideration does not affect the core codec (library): The core codec only receives or supplies the CMYK/YCCK data and at most performs the YCCK-CMYK conversion, where the 'K' value is passed through unchanged, while everything else (conversion to RGB) is left to the application. The supported color spaces in libjpeg are now (jpeglib.h): /* Known color spaces. */ typedef enum { JCS_UNKNOWN,/* error/unspecified */ JCS_GRAYSCALE, /* monochrome */ JCS_RGB,/* red/green/blue, standard RGB (sRGB) */ JCS_YCbCr, /* Y/Cb/Cr (also known as YUV), standard YCC */ JCS_CMYK, /* C/M/Y/K */ JCS_YCCK, /* Y/Cb/Cr/K */ JCS_BG_RGB, /* big gamut red/green/blue, bg-sRGB */ JCS_BG_YCC /* big gamut Y/Cb/Cr, bg-sYCC */ } J_COLOR_SPACE; Note that the BG_RGB mode is defined in IEC 61966-2-1 only for 10 or more bits sample precision. It can be easily extended for 9 bits precision (and we allow that), but not easily for 8 bits (so we don't allow that), that's why it is actually not useful in the 8 bits implementation. However, the BG_YCC mode CAN be used easily also with 8 bits precision (although it is also formally defined in IEC 61966-2-1 only for 10 or more bits), while retaining the full luminance precision and reducing only the color components, which can be partially compensated by adapted quantization in the JPEG context! That's why I have introduced the cjpeg -bgycc switch, for demonstration that there is now an opportunity to exchange wide gamut color images in standard JPEG file interchange format (will be automatically clipped for normal RGB output, see jdcolor.c). Note that you cannot actually generate wide gamut colors by this option with cjpeg, because cjpeg actually supports only normal RGB input - it just generates a wide gamut capable encoding format. But an appropriate application can feed wide gamut colors directly to the library in this way. The IEC 61966-2-1 standard is not freely available, but you can find an identical British Standard version (including the important amendment) to read online (not possible to save or print): http://www.doc88.com/p-694270296039.html Regards Guido -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Guido Vollbeding gu...@jpegclub.org writes: The term JPEG FILE INTERCHANGE FORMAT (JFIF) primarily refers to the range of supported color space encodings, and it will be redefined by IJG in the upcoming IJG JPEG 9a release, see Just for the record, JFIF was not invented by IJG, and I don't believe that you get to redefine it. The original spec is perfectly clear that there is exactly one color space allowed in JFIF files. (Well, two if you count greyscale.) If you try to extend this you'll just end up creating incompatibilities with non-IJG implementations. In general, I'm quite disturbed that you seem to be willing to introduce file format incompatibilities with other implementations (and with older copies of the IJG code for that matter). This flies in the face of what IJG was founded to accomplish, namely promote universal compatibility of JPEG files. I took a quick look at the referenced Debian bug, and I'm in agreement with the this is not a bug position. Although the complainant is of the opinion that djpeg should be able to read any JPEG file, that's utter nonsense. It has never been intended to deal with CMYK data. The proposed patch involving somebody's hack-and-slash conversion to RGB just betrays complete ignorance of what CMYK is used for in the real world. (I will note that I rejected similar patches back when I was actively maintaining libjpeg.) In practice, if you want to deal with CMYK, you really need a file format like TIFF that is able to carry the necessary auxiliary info about which CMYK inks are meant. JFIF can't do this, and that's fine --- it was never meant to be all things to all people. regards, tom lane -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#718604: libjpeg-progs: djpeg broken for some jpegs
Bill Allombert wrote: Dear Alan, I have forwarded your bug report to the upstream maintainer. Thanks for taking the time to work on this. However, I have a question: how do you generate such JPEG images ? Would there be benefit for libjpeg to be able to do that ? I gather from the archived libjpeg-turbo discussion that this weird kind of jpeg is generated by Photoshop when certain options are enabled. I don't know the motivation for creating them that way. I only wish I could take arbitrary jpegs from the wild and feed them to a shell script based on djpeg, without having the occasional failure because one of these YCCK images showed up. The second issue is that I'd also like to be able to run xli *.jpg in a directory full of images-not-made-by-me, and not see any failures. That means conversion needs to be done in xli or in the library. With the patched version of the library, I already have xli working (by adding 3 extra lines to request RGB output from the library). Without the patched library, it would be harder. I can appreciate that the YCCK/CMYK formats are non-standard hacks forced upon us by Adobe, and it's not pleasant to admit we need to support them. But the free software community in general has not rejected them. They can be converted by imagemagick, displayed by mozilla, and edited by gimp. The only places where YCCK/CMYK support is missing is in the small and fast alternatives to those programs. I want to fix that. If we're stuck with a djpeg that refuses to decode images with proprietary extensions, not because the extensions aren't understood but because the maintainer objects to the existence of the extensions, then djpeg has become more of a political object than a useful scripting tool. After testing this patch, I became aware of jpegtopnm in the netpbm package, which already handles YCCK. The easy way around this problem will be to just s/djpeg/jpegtopnm/g in all my scripts and apt-get remove libjpeg-progs. But that leaves the followup issue, lack of xli support, unsolved. I'd then have to port this patch (which inside libjpeg is *already working*) to xli. And then xloadimage. And how about xpaint? Making each one of them contain a duplicate of the conversion code would be ridiculous! -- Alan Curry -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
