This bug regarding npm's bash completion script clobbering
$COMP_WORDBREAKS has been fixed and committed upstream. According to
Forrest L Norvell (@othiym23)
replying to the the corresponding upstream GitHub issue #4530 Shell
completion script breaks bash's environment variable
People have been complaining to me that npm is considerably
out of date. It appears that 3.2.0 is available.

However, I would like to suggest that packaging 2.13.5 is fine too,
which appears to be the latest stable version and is what
sudo npm install npm -g would fetch as of today.
Oops, forgot to give Greg Whiteley (@whitty) the credit
for authoring and sending the patch[1] for this bug in
May 2015 to the upstream npm project on GitHub.

Thanks for the new version of fonttools which support numpy.
However, the package still Depends: on python-numeric
rather than python-numpy, which I had not installed, causing
a ttx -l unifont.ttf run to fail.

As to why this bug wasn't discovered sooner... I don't know. Perhaps
very few people use the tiny dmesg in klibc-utils for diagnostic
