characters like à with dead keys. It happens with both the keyboard and the
kbd driver.

Confirmed, with bell-style none, the pc speaker beeps. With 'visible', the pc
speaker is quiet, but I don't see a visible bell either (tested with xterm

JFTR, I also hit this problem. It happened during the switch of daylight
savings, causing two backups being created the same day, with a different
timezone offset (+1 and +2).
After removing all backup files from that day, everything worked again.

I just rebuilt krdc myself and the issue persists. It just sits there,
displaying the blue screen, polling for events.
FWIW, the host is a Mac Mini (Snow Leopard) with the builtin Desktop Sharing
