the installation guide has warning messages like

"Although this installation guide for amd64 is mostly up-to-date, 
we plan to make some changes and reorganize parts of the manual

"This installation guide is based on an earlier manual written for the 
old Debian installation system (the “boot-floppies”), and has been updated 
to document the new Debian installer. However, for arm64, the manual has 
not been fully updated and fact checked for the new installer. There may 
remain parts of the manual that are incomplete or outdated or that still 
document the boot-floppies installer."

depending on the architecture.

Those warnings are there since Woody or Sarge, and I think they are no
longer true.
We should remove them.

1. there has been no recent code change in this regard, so the implementation
has been the same for a long time.

2. Reading the whole paragraph gives the answer to your question:

Setting up your clock and time zone is followed by the creation of user 
accounts. By
default you are asked to provide a password for the root
(administrator) account and information necessary to create one regular user
account. If you do not specify a password for the root user, this
account will be disabled but the sudo package will be 
installed
later to enable administrative tasks to be carried out on the new system.
By default, the first user created on the system will be allowed to use the
sudo command to become root.



Long story short: 
functionality of the Debian installer is:
the first user only gains sudo rights, if root account is disabled.

Hmm, I it found documented, that there *is* a limit of 255 characters for the
*kernel*, but the bootloader *may* allow to exceed this.
As that means, it depends on which bootloader is used, if the limit is at
255 or more, I think it is best to mention this limit of 255 chars, but
I will relativise it a bit:


Also there is a limit of 255 characters for the whole kernel command line,
everything above this limit may be silently truncated. 

(note the "may" :-) )

There are several suggestions in this longstanding report, but since it is 
very old, many changings no longer apply, because the arch where it appears is 
no longer part of stable, or the typo has already been fixed or the like.

The only thing which should be changed was consistent use of S/390
instead of s390, which I did now, including translations.

I set 'condition="unofficial-build"' for that chapter (as it is for hurd), so

But that mentioned commit does only add such sentence into the "Installation
Howto", which is an appendix from the "Installation guide". These both are
rarely the same manuals, but the one in a extremly short version, and the
other quite detailed. Which means, people who read the "long version", means
the main part of the installation guide, will most likely not read the
installation howto as well. So that persons will not know about the 
sudo/no-password-for-root infos.

Therefore I reopen this bug, I will add such sentence into the main part of
installation guide as well (however after the release of Stretch).

I have already looked into the pt problem today.
It looks like a dblatex bug to me:
if there is a \" at the end of a string, and the string is from type
, it fails to build. The quotation mark is not correctly escaped
apparently.

Attached you will find a patch against the pt.po file, which makes the pt
language build PDF variant correctly. My way was, to change " quotation marks
into ' ones. 
(My main point for preparing this patch was to find out what's going wrong.
It's probably not the solution, to apply the patch and that's it. The 
portuguese translator may change such quotation marks later, and then it
breaks again.)

BTW: I wonder why this is only a problem with portuguese, it's no problem in
german for example...

I am not a dblatex crack, so my workflow was, to mostly copy the code from
other project (installation-guide).
The reason for the used fonts in installation-guide is probably historical
ones, nothing really intended.
If you have reasons to use other fonts, and you manage that to build, please 
do. No objection from my side, of course :-)
With my font choice I got it to build successful, that was my main point.

While reviewing the german translation of the release-notes, I found some
glitches in the english original as well:


chapter 2.2: what's new: software updates
the table mentions MySQL as "being upgraded", while the version in
Stretch is "removed".
So MySQL has to be deleted from this table.


chapter 4.4.5: upgrading the system
here installation of CDs is used several times. Should be changed
into CD/DVD/BD (and from there on use simply "disc").


chapter 5.1.4: Deprecated components for Stretch
"Users will need to migrate to other alternatives to prevent trouble 
when updating to 10."
Should better read "when updating to Debian 10" at the end.


appendix A.2: Checking your sources list
About checking the sources.list before (!) upgrading to Stretch, this 
contains:
"If any of the lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list refer to 'stable', 
you 
are effectively already “using” stretch."
I think, this can hardly be misunderstood as "The upgrade to stretch is
already completed on my machine", at least from beginners.
My proposal would be:
"If any of the lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list refer to 'stable',
it effectively points to Stretch already."


Additionally, this chapter mentions lines with
deb ftp:
in sources.list, which should be changed from stable to jessie.
I propose to add a note like:
"Lines in sources.list starting with "deb ftp:" and pointing to
debian.org addresses have to be changed into "deb http:" lines.

Yes, that would be fine.

As Beatrice already wrote, there are translations in the Debian Reference
project, which are actively maintained by a translator, and importing them
into Weblate is _definitely_hijacking_!!!
And that's a absolute NO-GO!!!
Why import those up-to-date translations into Weblate at all? Those
translations do not need any help from help! They have a translator, which
does it job perfectly fine!

Moreover: when looking at the above mentioned Weblate contributions, I
see absolutely no reason, why Weblate is an option at all!
The above contribution makes me think, that the Weblate is a robot-based
translation process which goes totally crazy. That's why I see Weblate
absolutely as a NO-GO, sorry. My personally opinion.

I have played around a bit with pdf support for Debian Reference, and it
seems as if the involved tools have been improved significantly in the last
years, since I managed to get valid pdfs built for all languages without
big changings (except Portuguese, but that fails when building html variant 
too, because of syntax errors in po files.

Tables are now integrated (Osamu wrote, there is some problems with tables,
but I cannot see any such problems now).

So, it looks to me, as adding pdf support could be possible :-)

I just noticed that there is an outdated version of the installation-guide
on the stretch rc3 cd images:

I downloaded the i386 xfce-cd1 image of stretch rc3.
This image contains the installation-guide in /doc/manual.
And in /doc/manual/en/install.en.txt I see a copyright note

"2004 - 2016  the Debian Installer team"

which means this version of the manual is not up-to-date
(adding 2017 to copyright years was done with this commit in January 2017:

Could we get a up-to-date installation-guide on the CDs/DVDs, please?

Ahh, I see.

Geert: to be honest, I overlooked your changing in build.sh.
And now, double-checking that, it works. The header is there in
https://d-i.debian.org/manual/example-preseed.txt

So I have to correct myself a bit: 
The example-pressed.txt file would be ok so far, strictly spoken.

So, the only argument to still change something now, would be:
The whole content of example-preseed.txt is generated from text examples
within the chapter B.4 of the installation-guide.
To be consistent with this, it would require to apply my proposed patch.
It would also give possibility to explain, what this header line is for.


But: Applying my patch would make above's changing in build.sh useless, so
this would have to be reverted, right?

The patch for the manual was committed in the meantime, but now the new
header is not included in the example-preseed.txt file, see
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/example-preseed.txt

This is, because the script, which generates the example-preseed.txt file,
only parses parts of the preseed.xml which are between  
tags that have the attribute 'role="example"' set.
(This documented at the beginning of the ../en/appendix/preseed.xml.)
And there is nothing like that ATM in the manual.

The attached patch adds the needed paragraph in B.4 chapter at the very
beginning (the already existing content regarding the new header is in B.3).

Innocent de Marchi pointed me on a small glitch in the installation-guide,
which can be seen here:

After the third paragraph, there is a "Tip" sentence and a "Note" sentence.
While the Note is correct, the Tip is lacking its graphical symbol.
And that's why it looks like

...
...

The corresponding  tag is used twice in the manual, but it is not
integrated in the CSS stylesheet, and there is no icon file for tip. 
In PDF variant it works fine.

Comparing with other Debian-Doc manuals, there are others which don't have
a tip icon too, while the maint-guide has a tip icon, which is identical
with our note icon (but their note icon is a complete different one).

So, adding tip into the CSS would be one way to go, or change the
two occurences of  in the source code into something like .

Currently the pdf version of the release-notes is not available for
Japanese and Polish. However, there are pdf files in the table at
https://www.debian.org/releases/stretch/releasenotes, like
https://www.debian.org/releases/stretch/amd64/release-notes.ja.pdf.

But this file is not a valid pdf file, it's a text file renamed to .pdf
which leads to errors when trying to view it.
People might think, they did something wrong or the file got corrupted
on download or ...

So I have a patch attached, which generates valid pdf files saying
something like
"PDF version of the release-notes not available for this language"
in a simple one-liner, stolen from
https://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/d-i/trunk/scripts/manual-daily/,

So we only need the ppc64el flavor for powerpc, right?

That removal was included in the patch from James Cowgill in this bug,
which I applied. 
But you are right, powerpc content was not completely removed at other
places in the manual, but is just not used. So it would be consistent, to
re-add that entry, but out-commented.

I would propose to delete the "Mips Malta (64 bit)" entries from the 32bit MIPS

I totally support this request.

I have already noticed one of "my" translations being hijacked by Weblate
service, where one string (!) (an URL, to be strict) was translated.
That did not gave much value to the translation.
And it looks to me like working without any concept.

Moreover, translations in Debian are community work, which means working
together, as a team. Hijacking translations is not fine style.
At least I have learned it like this here in Debian.

Also, anonymous translations have been disapproved in several other Debian
sub-projects, since you cannot communicate with the translator, to inform
about errors or to ensure consistency with terms. I feel, this Weblate
translations are also some sort of this "anonymous" translations, especially
because they happen without coordination, as it seems.


I am unsure, when this Weblate thing has entered Debian ... ?

How does this work?

Did I miss an announcement about this on debian-i18n or something like that?

Attached is an updated po file for German.

I have applied the proposal by Helge, and updated the other fuzzies and
untranslated strings as well.

it's fine to see a d-i manual translation update for Dutch, after Dutch
being orphaned for a long time.

I have activated the build for i386 in Dutch on 
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/. Might help for proofreading or such.

It would be great if you could work on the Dutch d-i manual further.
(It's probably to late for Stretch, but maybe a target for Buster?)

Strictly spoken, the correct link would be
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/el.amd64/install.el.pdf
since the pdf variant of the manual is the faulty one; html is ok (of
course, since there is no dblatex involved).

Indeed. 
And that's why: in stable, texlive-lang-cjk had a Depends on
those two, while in unstable that Depends-dependencies are no longer there.
I was working on stable here, that's probably the reason why I did not
catch that.

I have build refcard successfully in a sid VM before the upload of 9.0.2.
Don't know what went wrong.

Now, I am currently unable to build refcard in a sid chroot. It complains 
about /proc/self/stat being unavailable.
I couldn't find something about this in the maint guide
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/build.en.html ...
Need to investigate further.

I heard of Firefox being back in Debian, and assumed the same for Thunderbird 
without further checking.

A corrected patch is attached.

With a CD1 install without network, you probably don't get an GUI system.

To deal with this, I propose to change
"List of unofficial ports" into "List of unofficial/old ports".


I have attached a new diff and the new resulting html file.
Again the changings as an overview:

- "List of unofficial ports" -> "List of unofficial/old ports"
- move ia64, kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, s390 and sparc to the 
"unofficial/old 
  ports" section
- set ia64 from "released" to "discontinued" and added a sentence to document
  this change.
- kfreebsd-amd64: added a sentence to document the current, non-official status
- kfreebsd-i386: added a sentence to document the current, non-official status
- set m68k from "discontinued/being revived" to "in progress"
- set s390 from "released" to "replaced by s390x" and added a sentence to 
  document this change.
- set sparc from "released" to "replaced by sparc64" and added a sentence to 
  document this change.
- sh: changed port name from "sh" to "sh4". And added a sentence to mention
  the J-Core processor.

Not only the headers are corrupted, also many many translated Danish strings 
disappeared from the po files.

Current statistics for Danish show:

0 translated messages, 529 untranslated messages.

0 translated messages, 705 untranslated messages.
sublevel 4:
0 translated messages, 219 untranslated messages.
sublevel 5:
0 translated messages, 62 untranslated messages.


This all began at 27 May 2016.

like alpha or arm or hppa.

I cooked a patch, to deal with all the suggestions made here:

  ports" section

I should have mentioned explicitly, that Omer proposed to change the global 
build variables in debian/rules, so that might affect all languages!

Are there any known side effects or objections on adding 
LC_ALL=en_US.utf8
to the used environment variables for building refcard?


I could not see any difference while testing the proposed chagings though.

Are there any objections against me committing that parts of the patch,
which are related to Hebrew?
Since I have no proofreader for Arabic until now, I feel somewhat uncomfortable

Hi,

I was just hit by this bug too.

And more curious than that: I found that the NO-BREAK SPACE does *not* being
changed, if for example a chinese character exists in the same string.
(I suspect that will work with other characters too (probably only multi-byte 
characters ?), but I found it appearing within a translated chinese string.)

Attached is a diff, which shows, that I have added such chinese character
to the BookmarkTitle line. And then the NO-BREAK SPACE survives.

in June 2013 this bugreport was filed with a Russian translation update.
The bugreport contains a complete ru.po file.

There have been several commits on ru.po in svn since then, so the file
from #713063 is probably heavily outdated now.

Nevertheless, could you have a look, if something is useful for you now,
and otherwise close this bug?

The attached patch switches the build chain for ar, hi and ml, to use dblatex
instead of xmlroff (patch by victory, thanks).

Please note, that the patch is only a draft, maybe other fonts would be
better. To sort this out, proofreaders for the respective languages are
needed and info from them, which fonts they prefer.
Since I didn't got answers from translators for this languages, I store the
draft as a bugreport.

Today I have committed the needed changes, to switch ja, zh_CN and zh_TW
to dblatex (patch provided by victory).

This also closes #783848 (refcard: There are some Chinese characters 
garbled): proofreaders for zh_CN and zh_TW have confirmed that everything
is fine, when building this way.

But it does not harm, right?

The point is: if the translator does not enclose the new RTL strings by 
RLE/PDF, that can be done by the package maintainer via that script
instead - if he know about that, and how to use it.
