Bug#735003: sabnzbdplus: add systemd service file
hi, I took a look at your patch and did quite a bit of reading up on systemd. Lots of modern niceties, although its authors definitively didn't have something like sabnzbd in mind. I agree reusing /etc/default/sabnzbdplus isn't the way forward, simply because that would involve scripting around the rigid and deliberately incompatible design choices in systemd. I also don't see any realistic way to avoid a user switching to systemd from having to reconfigure the service - happy to be proven wrong though. Given that systemd is apparently a release goal for jessie [1], I'm open to adding support for it, albeit not at the expense of introducing regressions or unnecessarily increasing support load. Anyway, a couple of questions about your .service file: (1) Why force the log level on startup at all, esp. to a level that iirc is the default anyway? (2) User=%I, Group=%I: according to the systemd.unit manpage, %I is the "unescaped instance name", a term that apparently refers to the username part of the command used to start/enable the service. Does this mean the proposed service file requires the group to match the username? (3) Is there any way of passing command line arguments and/or systemd options? Other than by direct editing of the service file, as it appears such edits do not survive package updates. Think: * sab options, such a --server (to enable remote access or specify a different port number) or --config for users that keep sabnzbd.ini in another location: both common real life use cases that the current init script handles fine. * systemd options, such as the Group to use for the service (and whatever else there is in systemd). (4) Shouldn't some attempt be made to start sab reasonably late, e.g. via the After=... unit option? The init.d script does so (by popular demand); nowadays via soft boot dependencies in its INIT INFO, and previously by linking at S98/K02. This lowers the chances of bumping into unconfigured networking and the likes. As is, systemd may end up starting the program alot earlier in the boot sequence, which brings only disadvantages. PS: Don't spend too much time on the packaging details, given the existence of dh-systemd that's probably the easy part. Only changed that because the autotools-dev README.Debian seemed to suggest using a "fixed" version of automake. Also, prior to your mail, I was unaware that 1.11 had even been under consideration for removal at all. So latest automake it is (pulled in via dh-autoreconf). Bug#691312: sabnzbdplus: Version 0.7.4-1 can not be installed because initscript fails
Thanks for the info. Root cause turns out to be that extra space in the shebang. Upstream sources don't have it and the packaging doesn't intentionally add it either. I suspect this is a side effect of a recent change in dh_python2 ("rewrite shebangs by default" at [3]). This causes detection of running instances in the init script to fail, meaning it will start but stop/restart/status will no longer work. On upgrade, the service thus fails to start because the old (undetected) instance is in the way. Thanks for your comment. As much as I understand the sentiment, I don't think installing these files purely as a nicety does justice to the interests of end users expecting to find actual documentation in that very place. A quick read of their comments and frustration on the launchpad bug referenced in the package changelog clearly shows there's no better way to acknowledge upstream's hard work than simply keeping the debian package up-to-date.

While the file in itself doesn't do any harm as installed by upstream, it could indeed be useful as documentation. Decided to link the other way around though, i.e. from /usr/share/doc/xpad to its current location (in accordance with policy section 12.3). > You seem to have added an upstream signing key and modified d/watch, > but I couldn't find mention of this in your changelog entry. My bad, had to revert some of the initial changes as the pubkey was nowhere to be found (despite signed releases) and then forgot to restore the changelog entry after asking upstream about that in https://answers.launchpad.net/xpad/+question/295164 > It's great you are closing so many bugs :) All for that warm feeling on rainy days such as this ;) > > * Patches: > > + remove missing.diff, no longer needed. > > It would be good to say in the changelog why it's no longer needed > (obsoleted by XX? applied upstream?). Unfortunately, that patch came completely undocumented and didn't make much sense, so I went with a delete-and-see approach here. Could well be that using autoreconf was all it took to get rid of it. The lack of info about why it was there in the first place makes it hard to provide more details beyond the simple notion of being 'no longer needed'. > > * Remove Debian menu support as per #741573. > > That is a very long bug report. It would be better to refer to the > section of the Debian Policy that states the deprecation. This is a standard and well known change implemented in numerous packages nowadays. Afaik, no section in policy explicitly mentions the deprecation; the text was just changed to that effect. I'll mention the ctte decision in d/changelog in the hope of preventing others from wasting time reading that lengthy bug report but that's about all I can do here. > I think you mean "debhelper build dependency". Took a bit of work to reproduce this one. Restricting a VM to a single core, and stressing that to 100% during build did the trick. Turned out the test was expecting a 1.* value for latency but a system with limited resources would exceed that. Added a patch so that it will accept any latency value >= 1ms (the test has a usleep(1000) statement that ensures that minimum); also forwarded upstream. > An optional wishlist item: > > - crc32tbl.h is a generated file, and ideally it would be regenerated > during the package build. I understand the sentiment, but in this case that seems unnecessary. Looking at the code in crc32.c that table never changes, and it being generated rather than "hand made" was probably a mere choice of convenience for its original author. Bug#568208: sabnzbdplus: new version availabe 0.5 rc3
1. Those release candidates are quickly moving targets; internal release testers are already at rc5 right now with rc6 likely within days, so it seems to make more sense to wait for the final. 2. The 0.5 release needs python-cherrypy3 3.2, afaik that hasn't been released yet. Upstream releases include a convenience copy of cherrypy svn. Obviously, that can't be used in Debian. Work for 0.5 on the sabnzbdplus package is mostly done though, on Ubuntu it's available via https://launchpad.net/~jcfp/+archive/ppa -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Package: python-cherrypy3 Version: 3.1.2-1 Severity: wishlist Please update cherrypy3 to 3.2.0 rc1; the newly released sabnzbdplus 0.5.0 needs a newer version than 3.1.2. I would like to get that into Ubuntu's 10.04 release as well and since I prefer to keep things in sync with Debian, that explains why I'm asking for this rc rather waiting for cherrypy 3.2.0 to go final. hi Jonny, thanks for your work on this bug. Indeed synce-gvfs isn't in Debian yet (RPF at bug #517846), seems I got it installed from an Ubuntu ppa as a kind of 'collateral damage' while bughunting. Thanks for the report. The init script isn't the place to fix this. While definitely convenient, using it is by no means mandatory. Hence, fixes in there won't have any effect in case the program is started by other means. In addition, I dislike the concept of an init script making changes inside users' home directories. The discussion on the upstream forums I assume you are referring to had people suggesting encryption for the ini file, which is indeed useless for the reasons given by the developers. Initially creating the file with more secure permissions (as compared to common default umasks of 022 or 002) might make sense though, while not doing any damage. I'll discuss with upstream first. BTW: I'll leave severity and tags alone for now, although I don't really think this is a security issue in sabnzbdplus. More like the logical result of a not-very-good-for-privacy umask of 002 or 022 (which impacts any program that creates files), and/or bad security practices such as reusing login passwords. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Bug#944877: non-ascii, non-printable byte in jquery.min.js
Package: libjs-jquery Severity: normal Control: found -1 3.2.1-1 Control: found -1 3.3.1~dfsg-3 A recent bug filed against sabnzbdplus [1], a python program using cherrypy to serve its web interface that in turn uses jquery, reported the following error upon accessing the web interface: "UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xef in position 8593: ordinal not in range(128)". The bug only triggered in case the program was executed in a non-unicode environment. The origin of that problematic byte turned out to be the minified jquery from the libjs-jquery package. Both the non-minified code [2] and upstream's minified file use the notation "\uFFFD" for this byte; only in Debian's jquery.min.js it ends up as 0xef. I understand why Debian chooses to build the minified version itself rather than ship the one supplied with upstream releases, but doing so shouldn't introduce unnecessary regressions. Please fix the minifying process to retain the ascii notation for the likes of "\uFFFD". Bug#897516:
The original bug reported here - partial failure of cram's test suite - seems to be triggered by python-coverage >= 4.5, first uploaded to Debian in Februari of 2018 (i.e. roughly 2 years after cram 0.7-1). With earlier versions of coverage, cram 0.7-1 builds fine. I don't know whether the bug is in cram, its test suite, or coverage though. Any known examples of cram failing in packages using it for their test suites? Otherwise, please consider doing an upload of cram that runs the test suite but ignores the outcome until there's more definitive info on the root cause of this bug. pgpeJQ7J7vZ7L.pgp Description: OpenPGP digital signature
