Bug#915210: linux-image-4.9.0-8-amd64: kernel oops when plugging in pvr-usb2

2018-12-01 Thread Mark Small

Package: src:linux
Version: 4.9.130-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Whenever I plug in my Hauppauge WinTV PVR-USB2, I get a kernel oops.

I've looked online, and apparently others have this problem as well.

It looks like a fix for a different problem was backported from 4.11,
but was

missing two additional patches.

Have a look here:

https://pvrusb2.isely.narkive.com/Aonnv0UP/kernel-oops-with-pvrusb2-and-wintv-hvr-1950

Which refers to a kernel bug report here:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=198675

Can you please apply the fixes mentioned in the above reports? I'm
happy to test any updated packages, but I haven't done any coding in
nearly 20 years so applying patches to kernel source is probably
well beyond me.

The kernel bug was reported for the ARM version, perhaps it needs to be
applied to the amd64 tree as well?

Thanks

Mark

Bug#879107: linux-image-4.13.0: Kernel panic on boot at sched_clock in virtualbox guest

2017-10-19 Thread Mark Small

Version: 4.13.4-2
Severity: important
File: linux-image-4.13.0

Dear Maintainer,

I'm running Debian 32 bit inside virtualbox. I recently updated from
stretch to buster. The kernel included in buster will not boot. I get
a null pointer derefernce and kernel panic at the point in the boot
process where it says: sched_clock: Marking Stable. I have a video
screen capture in webm format that I can upload if that would help. I
also have png screen captures taken from the video.

If I choose the 4.9 kernel from grub, it boots fine.

Bug#716843: cups: CUPS doesn't properly initialize Lexmark E238

2013-07-13 Thread Mark Small
Package: cups
Version: 1.5.3-5
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After upgrading my print server to Wheezy, I've had a lot of problems printing
on my Lexmark E238 laser printer.

When printing from a linux client, it will
sometimes print just the top corner zoomed to fill the whole page. This
happens roughly half of the time, and only on the first page of a multi page
print job. Otherwise it prints properly. I'm using the pcl5 driver.
(Generic PCL 5 Printer Foomatic/ljet3).

If I print from a Windows box using direct/raw access (with the
Lexmark driver specifically for this printer), I get page after page of
gobbledegook (probably PCL6 source code.)

If I set a windows machine to print using a generic postscript driver, it acts
the same as a linux client. It sometimes works, but sometimes prints the
first page zoomed way in.

Given the symptoms, it seems to me that the printer isn't being properly
initialized. It doesn't recognise PCL6, and sometimes gets the resolution
wrong using PCL 5.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'd really like to have reliable printing again
before Jessie comes out.

Mark

Bug#675248: dosbox: Patch available to add joystick deadzone support

2012-05-30 Thread Mark Small
Package: dosbox
Version: 0.74-3
Severity: wishlist
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

I found a fairly simple code snippet online that adds support for a deadzone
with joysticks. This would make certain dos games much more playable with
dosbox (eg Tie Fighter).

The code can be found here:
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=24832sid=fcc0d8f236e399973266cba8bf22a5f9

Additional lines would also need to be added to dosbox.conf (sample and
explanation)

Thanks for your time,

Mark

I finally got things working properly, I think. I installed the latest
kernel, X, and Intel drivers from testing on this lenny laptop. I also had
to add noapic to the kernel boot options. After that suspend worked
perfectly. I think that this old bug is now safe to close.

I'm the guy who filed it originally.

 what about 2.3.2 now ? :)

 Brice

2.3.2 failed with graphical corruption just like earlier versions. Many icons
are black, as is konsole background, and lots of things don't get rendered.

Also, I've been getting some minor graphical corruption with day to day use
lately. Things like stray letters on the desktop, kde toolbars turning into
multicolored horizontal stripes until a mouseover causes them to be
repainted. Could it be related? I don't see these issues on my desktop, so
it feels like a X driver bug.

Sorry for the delay.

 Hi Mark,

There have been some fixes related to suspend/resume recently.

Bug#452376: xserver-xorg-video-i810: Screen corrupted after suspend to ram

2007-11-22 Thread Mark Small
Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810
Version: 2:2.1.0-2
Severity: normal

I've been trying to get suspend to ram working on my Dell C400 laptop.
I've got things mostly working, except I get video corruption after
resuming. Most icons get black borders and konsole is almost all black.

I've read reports of similiar problems that were solved by adding
VBERestore to the proper section of of xorg.conf, but that option was
removed from recent versions of the i810 driver.

Bug#452376: further info

2007-11-22 Thread Mark Small
I was in a bit of a rush as I was finishing up the bug report, so I forgot to
add some extra info:

The Dell C400 uses an i830 chip.

I invoke suspend on this laptop using s2ram -f -p -s Any other combination
of options fails altogether. This is similar to what others have seen

http://osdir.com/ml/linux.kernel.suspend.devel/2006-12/msg00163.html

I have to use an ubuntu compiled kernel, they must have an extra critical
kernel patch.

When the colors go bad, there is nothing I can do about it save rebooting.
Switching to console doesn't help. Restarting kdm doesn't help.

Sometimes s2ram DOES work okay. It seems that the longer X has been running,
the better. If I try to suspend right after logging in (a common testing
situation), it always fails. If I've been doing other stuff for a while, it
may work. Could it be a video memory allocation issue?

Mark

Bug#366845: libsane: Only root can use canon_pp backend

2006-05-11 Thread Mark Small
Package: libsane
Version: 1.0.17-3
Severity: normal

I've been trying to use my Canon N640P. It works very well when I run
as root, but when I run as my normal user, sane can't find the scanner.

When I run scanimage -L as root, I see:
device `canon_pp:parport0' is a CANON N640P flatbed scanner

As normal user, I get:
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

I think that it has something to do with the permissions on /dev/port
that libieee1284-3 uses.

$ ls -l /dev/port
crw-rw 1 root scanner 1, 4 2006-05-11 08:16 /dev/port

I've changed these permissions to the above in
/etc/udev/permissions.rules, and I am a member of the scanner group.

Here's an extract of an strace -L as normal uses:
open(/dev/parport0, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/0, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport1, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/1, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport2, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/2, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport3, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or

open(/dev/parports/3, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport4, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/4, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport5, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/5, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport6, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/6, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport7, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/7, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
ioperm(0x378, 0x3, 0x1) = -1 EPERM (Operation not
permitted)
open(/dev/port, O_RDWR|O_NOCTTY) = -1 EPERM (Operation not
permitted)
open(/dev/lp0, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/lp1, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/lp2, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)

And here's a similar extract as root.

open(/dev/parports/1, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport2, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/2, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport3, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/3, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport4, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/4, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport5, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/5, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport6, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/6, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parport7, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/parports/7, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
ioperm(0x378, 0x3, 0x1) = 0
ioperm(0x378, 0x3, 0) = 0
open(/dev/port, O_RDWR|O_NOCTTY) = 3
close(3)= 0
open(/dev/lp0, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/lp1, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(/dev/lp2, O_RDONLY|O_NOCTTY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)

As you can see, root happily opens /dev/port, but normal user doesn't.
Doh.

That's about all of the useful info that I can think of.
