Bug#578764: Please default to 'commit -a' when no changes were added
Goswin von Brederlow goswin-...@web.de writes: For SVN users it gets much worse: vi existing-file.c # do some changes vi new-file.c # create the file git add new-file.c vi new-file.c # do some more changes git commit A SVN user would expect the current working copies of existing-file.c and new-file.c to be commited. Instead only new-file.c is commited and only the fist modification. While this case is still highly confusing to non git users I do see that it can't be easily changed. And my suggestion doesn't change it. The call to git add creates an index so the commit would only act on the index. But then, you'd still have the confusion for people expecting the SVN semantics. They'd use git commit-without-dash-a happily untill they have to add a new file, and the day the do a git add on a new file, commit doesn't add their changes to existing files, and ... WTF!? Don't get me wrong: I do agree that not everybody have a use for the index. Typically, I teach Git to students, who are light-years away from understanding what clean commit, small and related changes means. They have no use for the index, they just use Git as a way to share code, and possibly as a backup mechanism. I just teach them always use the -a option of 'git commit' for now, you'll learn about the power of 'git commit-without-dash-a' later. Unless when they forget to say -a, it just works. And it even works when they add new files, when they resolve conflicts after a merge, ... which your proposal does not solve. -- Matthieu Moy http://www-verimag.imag.fr/~moy/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Junio C Hamano gits...@pobox.com writes: Think of this sequence: There's another case where it would be hard to decide what's The Right Thing: vi existing-file.c # do some changes vi new-file.c # create the file git add new-file.c git commit If you take the SVN semantics, the last git commit should commit the changes to existing-file.c. But keeping the current Git semantics, it doesn't. There are valid reasons why a user can type the above sequence with today's Git, and changing it would be backward incompatible, and would make the senario a lot more painfull. -- Matthieu Moy http://www-verimag.imag.fr/~moy/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#486727: Please drop dependency on bazaar
Chris Lamb [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Please drop the dependency on bazaar so it can be removed from the archive; see #454313 for more. (Of course, if this package's functionality depends entirely on bazaar, it should probably be dropped as well. I have made no such judgement on this matter, however.) Xtla depends either on tla or on bazaar. Bug#446737: RFA: xtla
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I'm not a Debian Developer, but I've been the maintainer of the Xtla package, with [EMAIL PROTECTED] doing the uploads. Xtla is now replaced by DVC, which reuses the Xtla code base to manage many other version control systems tools (git, hg, mtn, darcs, bzr, ...). The DVC build system also has been greatly improved, and solves most of the long-standing bugs of Xtla's Debian package. The debian package for DVC exists, the debian/ directory is in upstream (mostly based on Gnus' build system and package), so, not much work is needed, but the package needs a Debian Developer to be correctly included in Debian. Bug#440086: xtla: xtla does not follow emacs policy
Manoj Srivastava [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: xtla does not follow emacs policy, and that makes it very hard to cuild a local version or do NMU's. It requires _every_ _version_ of emacsen to be installed before the package can be built, and ships all the .elc files for all variants (bloating the package), instead of the common practice of compiling on the target machine. It ships all autoload files, but not all .elc. This is a known bug (mostly duplicate of #403058), but unfortunately, it's not going to be fixed for Xtla itself unless someone else steps in: We're now working on DVC, which is Xtla's successor, and manages multiple back-ends (git, hg, darcs, bzr, monotone). DVC's Debian package doesn't have this bug, but is not included in Debian yet. You can build and install it by your own if it's for a personnal install. http://download.gna.org/dvc/ I'm lacking time to take care of DVC's inclusion in Debian, but any help would be appreciated. -- Matthieu -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#403058: xtla: FTBFS: b-dep on emacs-snapshot, which is not in testing
Lucas Nussbaum [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: [... debian package fails to build from source on testing ...] It build-depends on emacs-snapshot, which is not available in testing (see #321676). Hmm, I didn't think about this problem. Quite funny to have a package OK in unstable, becomming wrong in unstable ! Indeed, autoloads generation for emacs-snapshot need emacs-snapshot. This is fixed in DVC whose Debian package generate autoloads at install time, but I'd like a simpler fix than backporting DVC's package to Xtla. Especially since Debian is now in frozen state. I'm not sure what's the best way to fix this. Not generating autoloads for emacs-snapshot if emacs-snapshot is not installed is half of a solution : this means the package won't run for someone using emacs-snapshot if the package has been built on a system without emacs-snapshot. The full build log is available from http://blop.info/bazaar/buildlogs/20061214/ About the archive rebuilt: The rebuilt was done on about 30 AMD64 nodes of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing an etch i386 environment (not unstable). Internet was not accessible from the build systems. The builds were processed as root. About Grid'5000: Grid'5000 is an highly reconfigurable experimental Grid platform gathering 9 sites and featuring a total of 5000 CPUs. It serves as a testbed for research in Grid Computing. Bug#380087: HUGE callhistory.xml with encoded name freeze wengophone

Bug#368840: There should be a amarok-dbg package
Package: amarok Version: 1.4.0-1 Severity: important The basic problem for me is that Amarok keeps crashing (I've been trying 1.2, 1.3, and now 1.4, it's always the same). The list of bugs for the Debian package contains a lot of crashes too, so I'm not the only one. (a pity, 'cause the software is great when it doesn't crash !) Bug#298978: ion3: Many bugs are fixed in the latest snapshot
Package: ion3 Version: 20050116-3 Severity: important I found at least 3 ways to make ion segfault/abort/infinite loop with the version of ion3 in Debian. All of them are fixed in the latest snapshot. Note that a consequence of one of the bugfix is a small API change (hooks called in restricted mode), which make some new scripts (detach.lua in particular) unuseable with Debian's ion3. I strongly suggest upgrading. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.10-1-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages ion3 depends on: ii libc62.3.2.ds1-20GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libice6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 Inter-Client Exchange library ii liblua50 5.0.2-5 Main interpreter library for the L ii liblualib50 5.0.2-5 Extension library for the Lua 5.0 ii libsm6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 X Window System Session Management ii libx11-6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii xlibs4.3.0.dfsg.1-11 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. It should be defined in tex-site.el. OOops, I had an old tex-site.el in my 'load-path. That's a bug in my config, not in the package. -- Matthieu
