The depmod: error lines repeat dozens of times until the boot image

I have no idea which package is at fault.

However, the laptop boots normally afterwards.

Synaptic starts up, asks for the admin password and then disappears.
The errors above appear to be logged prior to the password pop-up.

There are so many un-resolved bugs listed against this package it
hardly seems worthwhile using it in future. Don't even know why I'm
bothering to report this particular bug.

Bug#828776: UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xe3 in position 349: invalid continuation byte

2016-06-27 Thread Rob Stone
Package: debtags
Version: 2.1
Severity: serious
Tags: d-i
Justification: fails to build from source (but built successfully in the past)

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
It occurs each time I do any sort of upgrade.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I ran dpkg --verify debtags.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
It passed.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I was hoping it would give me more information about the error.

Note that there is no "position 349" on line number 592 in the file
"/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/apt/package.py" unless position 349 is the
349th. bit? I opened the file using ghex and line 592 appears to be "normal"
IMHO.

Bug#606773: Acknowledgement (Gnome Log-in Screen)

2010-12-13 Thread Rob Stone
Hi Josselin,

There is an executable /usr/bin/gnome-session dated 24feb2010 size
187.7kb.

I did a dpkg search for gnome-session and it only turned up
gnome-session-bin and gnome-session-common.

I ran Synaptic Package Manager and it showed:-

gnome-session NOT INSTALLED avail. 2.30.2-3
gnome-session-bin inst. 2.28.0-6 avail. 2.30.2-3
gnome-session-common inst. 2.28.0-6 avail. 2.30.2-3

So, I can only ASSUME that at some point Synaptic decided to remove the
gnome-session package but leave the binary behind.
As I can't see it's history list, as I'm running in failsafe mode, I
can't tell at what point this occurred.

Is this the information you require??

Rob

The Glib-CRITICAL error has been posted in Ubuntu forums but NO
resolution to this problem offered, nor any advice. I did a search and
these were the only places where it had been reported. Seeing as Ubuntu
is a copy of Debian, it would appear somebody, somewhere has made the
same mistake.

Some advice would be appreciated.

Bug#606773: Gnome Log-in Screen

2010-12-11 Thread Rob Stone
Package: gnome

Output of uname -a

Linux roblaptop 2.6.32-3-686 #1 SMP Thu Feb 25 06:14:20 UTC 2010 i686
GNU/Linux

The log-in screen appears, I enter my user name and then my password,
and all that happens is a pale blue screen and zilch. No sound of the
hard drive reading anything -- just total silence.

I'm able to gain access by the failsafe methods.

I did some upgrades over the last two days. Firstly I upgraded my jdk
and when I used my laptop again, the sound with Skype ceased to work
(and possibly the video). Running lsusb show everything connected as
normal.

So today, I upgraded packages with alsa, pulseaudio, etc. hoping it
would fix my problem and Synaptic also marked some gnome packages for
upgrade. 190 packages were downloaded. When I restarted, I couldn't log
in.

In failsafe mode I can access Synaptic but the File -- History tab is
greyed out, so I can't tell which packages to re-load with older
versions. I can't find anything pointing to where on the hard drive
Synaptic keeps this file.

My sources.list file is as follows:-

deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib

deb http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free

# deb http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
# deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
# deb http://ftp.au.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
# deb http://192.168.0.1/debian/ snapshot/

I have tried

dpkg --configure -a

and it displays nothing. I also tried

apt-get -f install

and it told me there was nothing to install.

I believe I need to go back to an older version of a package that I
assume is related in some way with gnome.

How do I find out which package??

I want my system back.

Regards,
Rob

Bug#374604: evolution-exchange: Crashes when scanning summary information for exchange folder

2006-06-20 Thread Rob Stone
Subject: evolution-exchange: Crashes when scanning summary information for
exchange folder
Package: evolution-exchange
Version: 2.6.2-2
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

When starting evolution, it begins to scan exchange connected
directories. It reaches the point where within the status bar we have
the message 'Fetching summary information for new message (99%
complete)' and the it hangs followed by a complete 'application has
crashed...' dialog.

Interestingly, selecting an exchange folder with a smaller number of
messages displays with no probs. inbox and sent items (with about 2
messages) causes evolution to crash as described above.

Running from a console, the following message is dumped just as the
number reaches 99%:

Bug#374604: evolution-exchange: Crashes when scanning summary information for exchange folder

2006-06-20 Thread Rob Stone
Hi

unfortunately i'm running the amd64 arch. unless you have an amd64 version i
can't test the package provided. perhaps i'll have to wait until it hits the
main repos with all supported architectures.

happy to test one here if you can point me to an amd64 package.

thanks heaps

Rob
