follows is the result of dpkg-reconfigure -plow (with lmodern.postinst including set -ex). adding a fresh lm.map to '/usr/share/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/lm/' seems to have fixed the _configuration_ problem, but a clean installation still fails. attached is the original output from updmap.. ~

as to this question: It's possible that you have refused to accept the new version of this file, and therefore updmap still wants to use lm.map. I'm not sure at which point i would have refused to use a file. i have no personally modified latex files outside my home dir so i would have accepted
