Fine. Then the very clear solution is on every page, automatically add an
'abort' choice.

B> on the maintainer scripts in question, etc.

Hmmm, I see. Not so simple.

Well anyway, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/newt/+bug/31207 .

And dpkg-reconfigure remains the craziest command in Debian.

Even the Debian Installer allows people to abort out.

Anyway, you will have a bunch of people using 'killall dpkg-reconfigure'
at random steps.

It would be much better, if like in the Debian Installer, at each step,
authors were required to add an abort choice, which would do the proper
clean up for their scripts at that point.

Sure, currently thoughtful authors already add such choices.
But most just assume the user "always wants to complete and submit their
tax return, and never has second thoughts halfway."

Bug#1000832: Mention how to turn off GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER warnings

2021-11-29 Thread Dan Jacobson
Package: grub-pc
Version: 2.06-2

We see two warnings:

Setting up linux-image-5.15.0-2-amd64 (5.15.5-1) ...
...
Warning: os-prober will not be executed to detect other bootable partitions.
Systems on them will not be added to the GRUB boot configuration.
Check GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER documentation entry.

Setting up grub-pc (2.06-2) ...
...
Warning: os-prober will not be executed to detect other bootable partitions.
Systems on them will not be added to the GRUB boot configuration.
Check GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER documentation entry.

We look at
(info "(grub) Simple configuration")
and read about GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER.

But nowhere is it mentioned how to turn off those two warnings.

No, we don't want to turn on the prober. We just want to turn off the warnings.

Bug#994506: Don't hide real packages among the D: stuff!

2021-09-16 Thread Dan Jacobson
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.8.13-3

It's just crazy to jumble these like this:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  bubblewrap{pu} (D: libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37) gstreamer1.0-plugins-base{pu} (D:
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good, D: libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37)
gstreamer1.0-plugins-good{pu} (D: libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37)
  libcdparanoia0{pu} (D: gstreamer1.0-plugins-base) libharfbuzz-icu0{pu} (D:

It's much better to put one package per line:

The following packages will be REMOVED:

  gstreamer1.0-plugins-base{pu} (D: gstreamer1.0-plugins-good, D:

  yelp{a} (D: libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18, D: libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37, D:
libyelp0, D: python3-distro)

So eight lines became 21.

Well yes, but those were eight dangerous lines, potentially hiding
packages we need to notice in the middle of those lines.

Yes, each one of your eight lines starts with a real package, just like
my 21 lines.

But your 8 lines **hides** real packages among the D: stuff!

Lynx treats comments within textareas as comments and not text.

That's wrong. Probably according to

too.

Bug#992598: Download while installing

2021-08-20 Thread Dan Jacobson
Package: aptitude
Severity: wishlist
Version: 0.8.13-3

Let's say there is to be done:
54 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 to remove and 1 not upgraded etc.

Idea: well in fact, these can be smartly grouped:

First split the list into groups of packages that don't depend on each
other.

Then download the smallest (bytes) group.

Then start installing them.

But even when we are still installing them, start downloading the next
group. Etc.

OK. It is too confusing to do parallel installs. But at least
downloading of independent (of this group) packages could continue,
while installing is occurring.

Well, perhaps all this is only important in slower speed countries.

Bug#992295: Add an option to test all the speakers on the system

2021-08-16 Thread Dan Jacobson
Package: alsa-utils
Version: 1.2.4-1
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/speaker-test

Add an option or mention how to test all the speakers on the system.

Currently, working back from what the man page says, one needs

for i in $(aplay -L|perl -nwle '/(.*):CARD=([^,]+)/ && print "$1:$2";'|sort -u)
do speaker-test --device $i --nloops 1; done

And that creates a lot of errors, as not all the aplay -L devices can be
used.

Anyway, the idea is: try making a noise that can be heard somewhere.
E.g., it is night time.
My house has 25 windows.
I will make a noise inside it,
and stand outside, wondering what window the noise came out of...

So running the above command, when the user finally hears a noise,
he can look quickly at the screen to see which --device made it.
