Bug#604953: gdm3: Crash on launching GDM3 user-selection
I switched from Gnome to Xfce (using Slim for a loging manager), and have also switched distros, so unfortunately I can't answer that question. Bug#608859: rhythmbox: Some keyboard shortcuts don't work when editing a playlist title
I apologize for the double post, but I just discovered another quirk with the behavior. If you have a song selected in the song section of the UI and press ctrl-X for cut, it will remove the song from the playlist instead of cutting the text. If there's no song selected, it will cut the text as expected.
Bug#608860: rhythmbox: Shuffle duplicates songs before playing every song.
Package: rhythmbox Version: 0.12.8-2 Severity: normal When shuffling a playlist, it will randomly choose the next song without eliminating duplicates. Shuffling is defined as not having any duplicates until you run out of items, and that is also the behavior I would expect as a user, as well as the behavior of other music players. (such as iTunes) To reproduce the bug, you can create a playlist with 3 songs, enable shuffling and repeat, and skip songs to see what the playing order is. There will sometimes be several iterations where it will ping-pong between two songs without playing the third one. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages rhythmbox depends on: ii dbus1.2.24-4 simple interprocess messaging syst ii gconf2 2.28.1-6 GNOME configuration database syste ii gnome-icon-theme2.30.3-2 GNOME Desktop icon theme ii gstreamer0.10-alsa [gst 0.10.30-1GStreamer plugin for ALSA ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-b 0.10.19-2+b2 GStreamer plugins from the bad s ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-b 0.10.30-1GStreamer plugins from the base ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-g 0.10.24-1GStreamer plugins from the good ii gstreamer0.10-pulseaudi 0.10.24-1GStreamer plugin for PulseAudio ii gstreamer0.10-x 0.10.30-1GStreamer plugins for X11 and Pang ii libatk1.0-0 1.30.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.11.2-7 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libcairo2 1.8.10-6 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.24-4 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-20.88-2.1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libfontconfig1 2.8.0-2.1generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.4.2-2.1FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgconf2-4 2.28.1-6 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglib2.0-02.24.2-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-media0 2.30.0-1 runtime libraries for the GNOME me ii libgstreamer-plugins-ba 0.10.30-1GStreamer libraries from the base ii libgstreamer0.10-0 0.10.30-1Core GStreamer libraries and eleme ii libgtk2.0-0 2.20.1-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libgudev-1.0-0 164-3GObject-based wrapper library for ii libice6 2:1.0.6-2X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libnotify1 [libnotify1- 0.5.0-2 sends desktop notifications to a n ii libpango1.0-0 1.28.3-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpython2.62.6.6-8+b1 Shared Python runtime library (ver ii libsm6 2:1.1.1-1X11 Session Management library ii libsoup-gnome2.4-1 2.30.2-1 an HTTP library implementation in ii libsoup2.4-12.30.2-1 an HTTP library implementation in ii libtotem-plparser17 2.30.3-1 Totem Playlist Parser library - ru ii libxml2 2.7.8.dfsg-2 GNOME XML library ii media-player-info 6-1 Media player identification files ii python-gnome2 2.28.1-1 Python bindings for the GNOME desk ii python-gst0.10 0.10.19-1generic media-playing framework (P ii python-gtk2 2.17.0-4 Python bindings for the GTK+ widge ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime Versions of packages rhythmbox recommends: ii avahi-daemon 0.6.27-2Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD daemon ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-ug 0.10.15-1 GStreamer plugins from the ugly ii gvfs-backends1.6.4-2 userspace virtual filesystem - bac ii notification-daemon 0.5.0-2 daemon to displays passive pop-up ii rhythmbox-plugins0.12.8-2plugins for rhythmbox music player ii yelp 2.30.1+webkit-1 Help browser for GNOME Versions of packages rhythmbox suggests: ii gnome-codec-install 0.4.7GStreamer codec installer ii gnome-control-center1:2.30.1-2 utilities to configure the GNOME d ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.19-2+b2 GStreamer plugins from the bad s ii rhythmbox-plugin-cdrecorder 0.12.8-2 burning plugin for rhythmbox music pn rhythmbox-plugin-coherence none (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#605335: nfs-kernel-server: IP address wildcards don't work when avahi-daemon is running
Package: nfs-kernel-server Version: 1:1.2.2-4 Severity: important I just installed avahi-daemon on my server, and after I had restarted nfs- kernel-server I was no longer able to mount my nfs drives. (it would give me access denied errors) After trying some different things, I had found out that the problem was with using wildcards for IP addresses. (example: 192.168.*.*) I had one export with an exact IP address, which worked fine, but the wildcard addresses gave access denied errors. When I stopped avahi-daemon and restarted nfs-kernel-server I was able to connect again. I was able to work around this by adding another export with *.local as the wildcard, but that isn't as safe as using IP addresses. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#602993: gnome-power-manager: Power manager settings ignored until input is received
Package: gnome-power-manager Version: 2.32.0-2 Severity: normal The power manager settings are ignored until the first input is received, either from the mouse or the keyboard. Other sources of input, such as IR remote input or game controller input don't count. In my case, I have a computer hooked up to my TV and the screen blanks after 20 minutes if I forget to press a key or move the mouse. (which is often) The screen saver is disabled and I set the power manager to never put the display to sleep, which does work once input is received. I have observed this on my desktop as well (which is what I'm reporting this from), though it isn't as debilitating since the keyboard and mouse are the main forms of input. My HTPC is set to automatically log in, while my desktop shows the login screen. I tried setting the gconf keys in /etc/gdm3/greeter ..gconf-defaults so gdm3 will have the same power settings, in case it was inheriting the settings from gdm3 after logging on, but that didn't to change anything. I was finally able to work around the issue by doing the following: 1. Run update-rc.d gdm3 remove to prevent gdm3 from starting. 2. Add su - user -c startx to /etc/rc.local to log in and start the X server on startup 3. Remove gnome-screensaver and gnome-power-manager from the startup applications 4. Add ~/.xinitrc to disable dpms and screen blanking and start the X session I don't by any means think that is a good workaround, and would only recommend it single-user situations like an HTPC. (which are also generally the kinds of configurations that would most suffer from this issue) However, this means that as long as I guarantee that gnome-power-manager never starts, my settings will stick regardless of if input is received or not. One thing to note is mplayer does prevent the display from going to sleep, though VLC doesn't. -- Package-specific info: Distro version: squeeze/sid Kernel version: 2.6.32-5-amd64 g-p-m version:2.32.0 HAL version: 0.5.14 System manufacturer: missing System version: missing System product: missing AC adapter present: no Battery present: no Laptop panel present: no CPU scaling present: no Battery Information: UPower data: Daemon: daemon-version: 0.9.5 can-suspend: yes can-hibernateyes on-battery: no on-low-battery: no lid-is-closed: no lid-is-present: no GNOME Power Manager Process Information: HAL Process Information: 108 1672 0.0 0.0 44992 5440 ?Ssl Nov07 0:01 /usr/sbin/hald root 1673 0.0 0.0 22172 1372 ?SNov07 0:00 \_ hald-runner root 1702 0.0 0.0 24288 1308 ?SNov07 0:01 \_ hald-ad 108 1720 0.0 0.0 26100 1280 ?SNov07 0:00 \_ hald-ad root 1769 0.0 0.0 24284 1308 ?SNov07 0:58 \_ hald-ad -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages gnome-power-manager depends on: ii consolekit0.4.1-4framework for defining and trackin ii dbus-x11 1.2.24-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii gconf22.28.1-5 GNOME configuration database syste ii libbonobo2-0 2.24.3-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libc6 2.11.2-7 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libcairo2 1.8.10-6 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libcanberra-gtk0 0.24-1 Gtk+ helper for playing widget eve ii libcanberra0 0.24-1 a simple abstract interface for pl ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.24-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.88-2 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libgconf2-4 2.28.1-5 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglib2.0-0 2.24.2-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-keyring0 2.30.1-1 GNOME keyring services library ii libgtk2.0-0 2.20.1-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libnotify1 [libnotify1-gtk2.1 0.5.0-2sends desktop notifications to a n ii libpanel-applet2-02.30.2-2 library for GNOME Panel applets ii libpango1.0-0 1.28.3-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libunique-1.0-0 1.1.6-1.1 Library for writing single instanc ii libupower-glib1 0.9.5-5abstraction for power management - ii libx11-6 2:1.3.3-3 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 2:1.1.2-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxrandr22:1.3.0-3 X11 RandR extension library ii notification-daemon 0.5.0-2daemon to
Bug#600548: Tab completion for mount has extra escape characters when spaces are present
I'm using the standard bash shell. Many programs seems to have rather complex tab completion behavior, including command line options and additional arguments to command line options. For example, after apt-get install it knows the next argument is a package name. I figured that there was a configuration file for those tools to describe that behavior, rather than being built into the shell for a particular set of tools, especially from the variety of tools that have that behavior. I guess it's also possible that most programs do have such a configuration file, but mount and umount don't, and the default behavior with sudo is wrong. Bug#593162: marked as done (audacity: Audacity fails to load libavformat)
Just to provide a bit more information, I'm using debian-multimedia, which is why my ffmpeg libraries are newer than what's in the standard debian repositories. This thread on Audacity forums ( http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=18t=28048) documents the problem, and also includes a patch. According to that thread, the change appeared in ffmpeg 0.5.1. If I'm reading the version numbers correctly, both debian-multimedia and experimental have ffmpeg 0.6 (with slightly newer version in debian-multimedia), and the standard squeeze install has 0.5.1. (which also means that the standard squeeze libraries might experience the same problem) I would prefer not to try to install a different version of the libraries since I don't have any experience working with different repositories like that, especially since I would have to deal with the dependencies. (I'm mainly worried about getting everything back together again when I'm done...) If somebody could try it on a standard testing and/or experimental install that would be great. Bug#593162: marked as done (audacity: Audacity fails to load libavformat)
Well, for exactly reasons like this, I find installing libraries from 3rd party repositories problematic at least. I agree it's not ideal, but unfortunately there's some functionality that isn't present in the main repositories. (for example, a build of gtkpod that supports AAC) And I've asked you to check this. Until this happens, I'd agree to leave this bug closed. It would be great if you could help with filling the gaps. Since that's the case, I can try both the testing and experimental versions, but most likely it will be this weekend or the next when I have the time. It is based on SVN trunk, were a lot of development is going on, and such compatibility bugs still need to be found and ironed out. Bug#593069: totem: Totem window can become larger than the screen for files with long comments
Package: totem Version: 2.30.2-2+b1 Severity: normal When opening a file, the main window will automatically resize so the entire Properties tab fits in the window. This causes a problem for files with a large Comments section under the properties, as it can cause the window to resize so it is larger than the screen. Additionally, the window cannot be resized to be smaller to fit in the screen. For example, this MP3 on OC Remix (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02081/) has the lyrics embedded in it, which causes the totem window to become ridiculously large when opened. Bug#592445: totem-mozilla: Playback sometimes stops on its own
Package: totem-mozilla Version: 2.30.2-2+b1 Severity: normal Sometimes when playing an MP3, the totem plugin will stop playback and reset the current position to the beginning. Since almost everything I play through the totem plugin are MP3s, I can't say if it's a more general problem or specific to MP3s. It will play through about halfway through the file, then suddenly stop playback and the playback position will reset to the beginning. When this bug occurs, I usually have played through the MP3 a few times or have paused and scrubbed through the MP3. After it's stopped, it will then play fine for a while, but can potentially happen again after more playthroughs. I generally have the MP3 in a separate tab or window when I've noticed it, but that could just be coincidence. It appears sporadically, and I haven't been able to reliably reproduce it. Bug#590427: scim: Segfault when loading a module
This isn't a Debian package, but you can get the source code here. ( http://byuu.org/bsnes/) The compilation guide on their site has what build dependencies are required, and afterward it's a standard make file. Once it broke, I re-compiled in case it was just a broken dependency with an updated package, since I've had issues like that before, but that didn't make any difference. I did try a few other QT applications, but they seemed to start fine. I looked through the source code of bsnes to see if it did anything interesting during startup, but the first thing it does after main is to construct a QApplication instance, which is what initializes the QT subsystem. In other words, unless there's any static objects being constructed before main, it immediately enters QT, where it crashes in the scim initialization. Bug#590155: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#590155: network-manager-gnome: nm-applet sometimes displays as a black rectangle in the notification area
Just to follow up, lately the behavior has changed slightly. Instead of having a black rectangle completely covering the network manager applet, it has changed to a black sliver partially covering the applet. If I click on the exposed portion of the applet, it works fine. Given that, I think it is actually a problem with compiz, and it was just a coincidence that the network manager applet appears in the same location where the bug happens. Bug#560131: gnome-control-center: Multimedia volume control keys
I wouldn't consider it closed, since the volume control for the media keys was controlling different hardware from the sound output and volume applet in the system tray. I was able to work around the problem by disabling the hardware from the sound preferences, but that doesn't fix the underlying problem that it wasn't controlling the correct hardware when it had the choice. I have confirmed that the problem still exists by re-enabling my video card's HDMI sound hardware and rebooting. Bug#570902: coreutils: df reports incorrect available size when hard links are used
The filesystem is ext4. When I show view the hard drive in GParted, it shows the size as 698.64 GB, used as 29.57 GB, and unused as 669.07 GB. Since df shows the capacity as 688 GB, I believe that 10 GB difference in reported capacity is due to the space take up by root as you mentioned. However, it doesn't take into account the fact that GParted says that 669.07 GB is available, while df states that only 635 GB is available. Additionally, the difference in capacity and available space reported by df (53 GB) is almost 3x the 19 GB it reports as used, which makes sense if it isn't reporting hard links correctly since I have 3 snapshots of my backup. This is also corroborated in the GNOME properties dialog for the drive: in the pie chart it states that 53.5 GB is used and 634.1 GB is free, while in the Contents section it states that the files total in 18.3 GB, which matches the output for df when you take rounding into account, complete with the 3:1 ratio. This doesn't look like it's just space used up as root... Here is the output for the command df -h for the drive in question: FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 688G 19G 635G 3% /media/Backup There are currently 3 snapshots of my backup, so it appears that the available size is being calculated from all 3 copies of the hard links. This also appears to affect other utilities, such as the used space chart for the drive in the properties window in GNOME which shows 53.6 GB used, though in the Contents section it says that 18.3 GB are used. What filesystem? You probably have some space reserved for root, which doesn't not normally show up in the avail column. (It won't be there when the disk is completely empty, even. Depending on the filesystem, the inodes used by the hard links may be dynamically allocated, which will consume space which may not appear in the used column. At any rate, df simply reports data from the kernel and is not the source of these numbers. I would say at this point that you're seeing normal behavior. Mike Stone

Bug#570902: coreutils: df reports incorrect available size when hard links are used
Thanks for all your help. After running another backup, the size appears to have changed very little, so it appears that it was just a strange coincidence that the amount of extra space used by the system happened to make the total used size equal to the number of hard links times the size of the files of the hard links. Weird situation, but at least everything is working correctly. Bug#570902: coreutils: df reports incorrect available size when hard links are used
Package: coreutils Version: 7.4-2 Severity: normal File: /bin/df I have an external HDD set up as a backup drive, where the backups are stored using hard links. (based off rsync) This appears to cause a discrepency with the reported available space. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages coreutils depends on: ii libacl1 2.2.49-2 Access control list shared library ii libattr1 1:2.4.44-1 Extended attribute shared library ii libc6 2.10.2-2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libselinux1 2.0.89-4 SELinux runtime shared libraries coreutils recommends no packages. coreutils suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#566547: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-amd64: Segmentation fault during halt
Here a the photo of the screen with the segfault. Bug#560131: gnome-control-center: Multimedia volume control keys don't work
I launched those utilities manually and played around with the different audio channels in the gstreamer utility, and I seem to have found the problem. I technically have 2 audio out devices: the sound system on my motherboard and the HDMI output for my video card. It's using my motherboard's sound for output, and both the volume applet and pulse volume control utility adjust that output channel, but for some reason the media keys were controlling the volume of my video card's HDMI output. From gnome-volume-control.pulse I was able to disable my video card's HDMI output and the media keys now effect the correct output channel. Bug#560130: gnome-keybinding-properties: numerous UI bugs when adding custom shortcuts
Package: gnome-control-center Version: 1:2.28.1-1 Severity: normal When adding custom shortcuts to gnome-keybinding-properties, there are numerous UI errors: - After adding the first custom shortcut, no additional custom shortcuts will appear in the dialog until you close and re-open gnome-keybinding-properties. - When you remove a custom shortcut, oftentimes the next time you launch gnome-keybinding-properties a blank custom shortcut named Unknown Action will be present. This cannot be removed normally, though it will go away if you edit it and press Apply. It sometimes will re-appear the next time you run gnome-keybinding-properties. - Whenever you single-click on a custom shortcut, the edit dialog is brought up. If you wish to do another action on that shortcut, such as remove it, you must first cancel out of that dialog. It should select the item on a single click, and only bring up the edit dialog on a double click or when pressing an Edit button.
