Bug#604953: gdm3: Crash on launching GDM3 user-selection

2011-05-10 Thread Aaron Barany
I switched from Gnome to Xfce (using Slim for a loging manager), and have
also switched distros, so unfortunately I can't answer that question.

Is this still an issue with a newer driver? 270.41.06-1 is now available in

Bug#617980: qt4-qtconfig: Font anti-aliasing settings aren't shared with gtk

2011-03-12 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: qt4-qtconfig
Version: 4:4.6.3-4
Severity: normal

When I set my fonts through the normal font configuration dialog (for either
xfce or gnome), those settings aren't shared with qt4, despite using the gtk
theme. This creates a noticeable difference between the look of qt4 and native
gtk applications.

Bug#608862: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#608862: network-manager: automounted nfs volumes no longer mount when connecting with wireless

2011-02-06 Thread Aaron Barany
I looked into this issue a bit more, and it looks like all I needed to do is
remove the /var/run/network/mountnfs lock directory to get it working again.
Either there was a bad version sometime that didn't clean it up or something
crashed or killed it before it could remove the directory, but it seems to
work fine now.

Package: nautilus

I have two nfs volumes that are hosted from the same computer and on the same

drag a file from one of the nfs volumes to the other the file is removed from
the original location. This is contrary to the default behavior when dragging
files between volumes, which is to copy the file.

Bug#560169: rhythmbox crashes when reading from NFS volumes

2011-01-03 Thread Aaron Barany
With the current version of Rhythmbox in squeeze (0.12.8) I have both my
music and the music database (by having ~/.local/share/rhythmbox as a
symlink) on an nfs drive without any crashes.

Bug#608859: rhythmbox: Some keyboard shortcuts don't work when editing a playlist title

2011-01-03 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 0.12.8-2
Severity: normal

When editing a playlist title, some keyboard shortcuts work while others don't.
For example, ctrl-C and ctrl-X will copy and cut appropriately. However, ctrl-V
doesn't paste and ctrl-Z doesn't undo. In order to paste a playlist name, you
must go through the contextual menu, and you can only undo by canceling your
edit with escape.

Bug#608859: rhythmbox: Some keyboard shortcuts don't work when editing a playlist title

2011-01-03 Thread Aaron Barany
I apologize for the double post, but I just discovered another quirk with
the behavior. If you have a song selected in the song section of the UI and
press ctrl-X for cut, it will remove the song from the playlist instead of
cutting the text. If there's no song selected, it will cut the text as
expected.

Bug#608860: rhythmbox: Shuffle duplicates songs before playing every song.

2011-01-03 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 0.12.8-2
Severity: normal

When shuffling a playlist, it will randomly choose the next song without
eliminating duplicates. Shuffling is defined as not having any duplicates until
you run out of items, and that is also the behavior I would expect as a user,
as well as the behavior of other music players. (such as iTunes) To reproduce
the bug, you can create a playlist with 3 songs, enable shuffling and repeat,
and skip songs to see what the playing order is. There will sometimes be
several iterations where it will ping-pong between two songs without playing
the third one.

Bug#608862: network-manager: automounted nfs volumes no longer mount when connecting with wireless

2011-01-03 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: network-manager
Version: 0.8.1-6
Severity: normal

I have a couple nfs volumes set to automount via fstab, and previously they
would automatically mount when network-manager connected to my wireless
network. However, since updating to the latest version of network-manager it
will no longer mount the volumes when the wireless network connects, forcing me
to mount those volumes manually.

Bug#608726: xine-ui: DVDs have periodic stutters when plaing

2011-01-02 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: xine-ui
Version: 0.99.6-1
Severity: normal

When playing DVDs, the playback will periodically stutter and regular
intervals. If I disable vsync in the xine options, the playback will be smooth,
but there will be a giant tear in the middle of the screen. I am also forcing
vsync in the radeon drivers, but if that's the issue it isn't practical to
disable that, since otherwise the entire system tears like mad. Other video
players, such as vlc and mplayer don't have this issue.

Bug#608727: vlc: Audio pops periodically when playing DVDs

2011-01-02 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: vlc
Version: 1.1.3-1
Severity: normal

Sometimes when playing DVDs in VLC, the audio will pop periodically at a
regular interval. This doesn't happen with every DVD, nor does it always happen
every time with the same DVD. I could sometimes fix it by relaunching VLC or
ejecting and re-inserting the DVD, sometimes it doesn't make a difference. A
few notable features of my configuration are I am using spdif passthrough with
ALSA for the audio and I am forcing vsync with the radeon drivers.

Bug#608603: gdm3: Default background cuts off the logo on widescreen monitors

2011-01-01 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: gdm3
Version: 2.30.5-6
Severity: minor

This is more of a bug with the new theme for Squeeze than gdm3, but I wasn't
sure where to report that kind of bug. I have a widescreen monitor (1920x1200)
and when the gdm3 login screen comes up with the default background image, the
Debian logo is cut off in the middle. Widescreen monitors are very common among
desktop users, and having the logo cropped by the screen boundaries looks
sloppy.

Bug#604953: gdm3: Crash on launching GDM3 user-selection

2010-12-31 Thread Aaron Barany
I am also experiencing this issue. I recently installed a GeForce GTX 460 on
my system, which is running Squeeze, and am using the proprietary NVidia
drivers installed from the Squeeze repositories. Periodically gdm3 will fail
to launch and will show a blinking _ cursor in the upper left. I can
generally recover without rebooting by switching to a different console with
ctrl-alt-F1, logging in, and running /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart, though
sometimes it takes 2 tries to successfully launch gdm3. I have attached my
xorg.conf, Xorg0.log, and gdm3's 0.log and 0-greeter.log. (the slave log was
empty)

Bug#605335: nfs-kernel-server: IP address wildcards don't work when avahi-daemon is running

2010-11-28 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Version: 1:1.2.2-4
Severity: important

I just installed avahi-daemon on my server, and after I had restarted nfs-
kernel-server I was no longer able to mount my nfs drives. (it would give me
access denied errors) After trying some different things, I had found out that
the problem was with using wildcards for IP addresses. (example: 192.168.*.*) I
had one export with an exact IP address, which worked fine, but the wildcard
addresses gave access denied errors. When I stopped avahi-daemon and restarted
nfs-kernel-server I was able to connect again. I was able to work around this
by adding another export with *.local as the wildcard, but that isn't as safe
as using IP addresses.

Bug#602993: gnome-power-manager: Power manager settings ignored until input is received

2010-11-09 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.32.0-2
Severity: normal

The power manager settings are ignored until the first input is received,
either from the mouse or the keyboard. Other sources of input, such as IR
remote input or game controller input don't count. In my case, I have a
computer hooked up to my TV and the screen blanks after 20 minutes if I forget
to press a key or move the mouse. (which is often) The screen saver is disabled
and I set the power manager to never put the display to sleep, which does work
once input is received.

I have observed this on my desktop as well (which is what I'm reporting this
from), though it isn't as debilitating since the keyboard and mouse are the
main forms of input. My HTPC is set to automatically log in, while my desktop
shows the login screen. I tried setting the gconf keys in /etc/gdm3/greeter
..gconf-defaults so gdm3 will have the same power settings, in case it was
inheriting the settings from gdm3 after logging on, but that didn't to change
anything. I was finally able to work around the issue by doing the following:

1. Run update-rc.d gdm3 remove to prevent gdm3 from starting.
2. Add su - user -c startx to /etc/rc.local to log in and start the X
server on startup
3. Remove gnome-screensaver and gnome-power-manager from the startup
applications
4. Add ~/.xinitrc to disable dpms and screen blanking and start the X session

I don't by any means think that is a good workaround, and would only recommend
it single-user situations like an HTPC. (which are also generally the kinds of
configurations that would most suffer from this issue) However, this means that
as long as I guarantee that gnome-power-manager never starts, my settings will
stick regardless of if input is received or not.

One thing to note is mplayer does prevent the display from going to sleep,
though VLC doesn't.

Bug#600548: Tab completion for mount has extra escape characters when spaces are present

2010-10-18 Thread Aaron Barany
I'm using the standard bash shell. Many programs seems to have rather
complex tab completion behavior, including command line options and
additional arguments to command line options. For example, after apt-get
install it knows the next argument is a package name. I figured that there
was a configuration file for those tools to describe that behavior, rather
than being built into the shell for a particular set of tools, especially
from the variety of tools that have that behavior. I guess it's also
possible that most programs do have such a configuration file, but mount and
umount don't, and the default behavior with sudo is wrong.

Not sure what is delivering tab-completion logic for mount, but it's not

Bug#593903: file-roller: back/forward history behavior is incorrect

2010-08-21 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: file-roller
Version: 2.30.2-1
Severity: minor

The behavior of the back/forward history of file-roller is inconsistent with
other programs.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open an archive with a directory structure.
2. Open a directory in that archive.
3. Press the back button.
4. Open a different directory.
5. Press the back button twice. Notice how you are in the directory you opened
in step 2.

Other programs that have back/forward viewing history would remove the first
directory from the viewing history since a new directory was opened after
pressing back.

Bug#593162: marked as done (audacity: Audacity fails to load libavformat)

2010-08-16 Thread Aaron Barany
Just to provide a bit more information, I'm using debian-multimedia, which
is why my ffmpeg libraries are newer than what's in the standard debian
repositories. This thread on Audacity forums (
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=18t=28048) documents the
problem, and also includes a patch. According to that thread, the change
appeared in ffmpeg 0.5.1. If I'm reading the version numbers correctly, both
debian-multimedia and experimental have ffmpeg 0.6 (with slightly newer
version in debian-multimedia), and the standard squeeze install has 0.5.1.
(which also means that the standard squeeze libraries might experience the
same problem)

I would prefer not to try to install a different version of the libraries
since I don't have any experience working with different repositories like
that, especially since I would have to deal with the dependencies. (I'm
mainly worried about getting everything back together again when I'm
done...) If somebody could try it on a standard testing and/or experimental
install that would be great.

Aaron's analysis about the match_ext vs. av_match symbol makes totally

Bug#593162: marked as done (audacity: Audacity fails to load libavformat)

2010-08-16 Thread Aaron Barany
Well, for exactly reasons like this, I find installing libraries from
3rd party repositories problematic at least.

I agree it's not ideal, but unfortunately there's some functionality that
isn't present in the main repositories. (for example, a build of gtkpod that
supports AAC)

And I've asked you to check this. Until this happens, I'd agree to leave
 this bug closed.
It would be great if you could help with filling
 the gaps.

Since that's the case, I can try both the testing and experimental versions,
but most likely it will be this weekend or the next when I have the time.

Bug#593069: totem: Totem window can become larger than the screen for files with long comments

2010-08-15 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: totem
Version: 2.30.2-2+b1
Severity: normal

When opening a file, the main window will automatically resize so the entire
Properties tab fits in the window. This causes a problem for files with a large
Comments section under the properties, as it can cause the window to resize
so it is larger than the screen. Additionally, the window cannot be resized to
be smaller to fit in the screen. For example, this MP3 on OC Remix
(http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02081/) has the lyrics embedded in it, which
causes the totem window to become ridiculously large when opened. Ideally a
text field with a scroll bar should be used so the window can be any size.

Bug#593162: audacity: Audacity fails to load libavformat

2010-08-15 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: audacity
Version: 1.3.12-4+b1
Severity: important

When Audacity attempts to load libavformat, it throws the following error in
the log: Error: /usr/lib/libavformat.so.52: undefined symbol: match_ext.
According to my research online, this is because newer versions of ffmpeg
changed the function match_ext to be av_match ext.

Bug#592445: totem-mozilla: Playback sometimes stops on its own

2010-08-10 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: totem-mozilla
Version: 2.30.2-2+b1
Severity: normal

Sometimes when playing an MP3, the totem plugin will stop playback and reset
the current position to the beginning. Since almost everything I play through
the totem plugin are MP3s, I can't say if it's a more general problem or
specific to MP3s. It will play through about halfway through the file, then
suddenly stop playback and the playback position will reset to the beginning.
When this bug occurs, I usually have played through the MP3 a few times or have
paused and scrubbed through the MP3. After it's stopped, it will then play
fine for a while, but can potentially happen again after more playthroughs. I
generally have the MP3 in a separate tab or window when I've noticed it, but
that could just be coincidence. It appears sporadically, and I haven't been
able to reliably reproduce it. I haven't seen this occur in the standard totem
player.

Bug#590427: scim: Segfault when loading a module

2010-07-31 Thread Aaron Barany
This isn't a Debian package, but you can get the source code here. (
http://byuu.org/bsnes/) The compilation guide on their site has what build
dependencies are required, and afterward it's a standard make file. Once it
broke, I re-compiled in case it was just a broken dependency with an updated
package, since I've had issues like that before, but that didn't make any
difference.

I did try a few other QT applications, but they seemed to start fine. I
looked through the source code of bsnes to see if it did anything
interesting during startup, but the first thing it does after main is to
construct a QApplication instance, which is what initializes the QT
subsystem. In other words, unless there's any static objects being
constructed before main, it immediately enters QT, where it crashes in the
scim initialization.

I noticed this problem with bsnes (a QT application).

Which package is this? Is this Debian package? If so please tell me
 which one.

Do you have issues with other QT application?

(I am not much of QT/KDE user).

As I tested with knotes, I have no problem.

Bug#590155: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#590155: network-manager-gnome: nm-applet sometimes displays as a black rectangle in the notification area

2010-07-31 Thread Aaron Barany
Just to follow up, lately the behavior has changed slightly. Instead of
having a black rectangle completely covering the network manager applet, it
has changed to a black sliver partially covering the applet. If I click on
the exposed portion of the applet, it works fine. Given that, I think it is
actually a problem with compiz, and it was just a coincidence that the
network manager applet appears in the same location where the bug happens.

I noticed this problem with bsnes (a QT application). Whenever I try to launch

Bug#560131: gnome-control-center: Multimedia volume control keys

2010-02-28 Thread Aaron Barany
I wouldn't consider it closed, since the volume control for the media keys
was controlling different hardware from the sound output and volume applet
in the system tray. I was able to work around the problem by disabling the
hardware from the sound preferences, but that doesn't fix the underlying
problem that it wasn't controlling the correct hardware when it had the
choice. I have confirmed that the problem still exists by re-enabling my
video card's HDMI sound hardware and rebooting.

Thanks,
Aaron

Whenever I try to adjust the volume via the multimedia volume keys, a popup

 it's e

Bug#570902: coreutils: df reports incorrect available size when hard links are used

2010-02-22 Thread Aaron Barany
The filesystem is ext4. When I show view the hard drive in GParted, it shows
the size as 698.64 GB, used as 29.57 GB, and unused as 669.07 GB. Since df
shows the capacity as 688 GB, I believe that 10 GB difference in reported
capacity is due to the space take up by root as you mentioned. However, it
doesn't take into account the fact that GParted says that 669.07 GB is
available, while df states that only 635 GB is available. Additionally, the
difference in capacity and available space reported by df (53 GB) is almost
3x the 19 GB it reports as used, which makes sense if it isn't reporting
hard links correctly since I have 3 snapshots of my backup. This is also
corroborated in the GNOME properties dialog for the drive: in the pie chart
it states that 53.5 GB is used and 634.1 GB is free, while in the Contents
section it states that the files total in 18.3 GB, which matches the output
for df when you take rounding into account, complete with the 3:1 ratio.
This doesn't look like it's just space used up as root...

FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
 /dev/sda1 688G 19G 635G 3% /media/Backup
There are currently 3 snapshots of my backup, so it appears that the
available size is being calculated from all 3 copies of the hard links. This
also appears to affect other utilities, such as the used space chart for the
drive in the properties window in GNOME which shows 53.6 GB used, though in
the Contents section it says that 18.3 GB are used.

What filesystem? You probably have some space reserved for root, which
doesn't not normally show up in the avail column. (It won't be there when
the disk is completely empty, even. Depending on the filesystem, the inodes
used by the hard links may be dynamically allocated, which will consume
space which may not appear in the used column. At any rate, df simply
reports data from the kernel and is not the source of these numbers. I would
say at this point that you're seeing normal behavior.

I am not familiar with GParted but partition tools show the size of
the partition. The filesystem will consume some amount of disk blocks
in order to support having a filesystem upon it. I expect that is
what you are seeing. The filesystem size will always be less than the
 raw partition size.

Additionally, the difference in capacity and available space
reported by df (53 GB) is almost 3x the 19 GB it reports as used,

Please run 'strace' on your 'df' command and report back the raw
numbers being reported by the filesystem. Something like this:

  $ strace -v -e statfs df /media/Backup

That will tell us the data that 'df' is receiving from the system.

 Thanks,
 Bob

Bug#570902: coreutils: df reports incorrect available size when hard links are used

2010-02-22 Thread Aaron Barany
Thanks for all your help. After running another backup, the size appears to
have changed very little, so it appears that it was just a strange
coincidence that the amount of extra space used by the system happened to
make the total used size equal to the number of hard links times the size of
the files of the hard links. Weird situation, but at least everything is
working correctly.

Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks for that information. With that we can manually calculate the
result and check against df's output.

 The statfs Size shows:
  f_bsize=4096
f_blocks=180268930 /* total data blocks in file system */
  4096 * 180268930 = 738381537280 Total Filesystem Size in Bytes

The df Size shows 721075720 1K-blocks.
  1024 * 721075720 = 738381537280 Total Filesystem Size in Bytes

 statfs Available shows:
  f_bsize=4096
  f_bavail=166235261  /* free blocks avail to non-superuser */
  4096 * 166235261 = 680899629056 Available

 df Available shows:
  1024 * 664941044 = 680899629056 Available

 statfs Used shows:
  f_bsize=4096
  f_bfree=175392411  /* free blocks in fs */
  4096 * 175392411 = 718407315456 Free
  738381537280 - 718407315456 = 19974221824 Used

 df Used shows:
  1024 * 19506076 = 19974221824 Used

Unless I missed something all of the numbers appear to match exactly
to me. 'df' is simply reporting the values returned from the kernel's
filesytesm statfs call. If those numbers are incorrect then it is a
kernel problem and not a 'df' problem.

 Hope that helps,
 Bob

Here a the photo of the screen with the segfault. (

I couldn't figure out how to unload the fglrx module, since rmmod always
threw an error saying that it is in use. However, if I boot in recovery mode
it doesn't load fglrx, but it still segfaults if I call halt after logging
in.

I couldn't figure out how to unload the fglrx module, since rmmod
always threw an error saying that it is in use. However, if I boot in
recovery mode it doesn't load fglrx, but it still segfaults if I call
  halt after logging in.

OK, so it's not the fault of fglrx.

Please report this at http://bugzilla.kernel.org under product
'Process Management', component 'Other'. Then let us know the bug
number so we can track it.

Bug#560131: gnome-control-center: Multimedia volume control keys don't work

2009-12-09 Thread Aaron Barany
I launched those utilities manually and played around with the different
audio channels in the gstreamer utility, and I seem to have found the
problem. I technically have 2 audio out devices: the sound system on my
motherboard and the HDMI output for my video card. It's using my
motherboard's sound for output, and both the volume applet and pulse volume
control utility adjust that output channel, but for some reason the media
keys were controlling the volume of my video card's HDMI output. From
gnome-volume-control.pulse I was able to disable my video card's HDMI output
and the media keys now effect the correct output channel.

Thanks for the help,
Aaron

Does it work with if you launch gnome-volume-control.gstreamer by hand?
 Same question for gnome-volume-control.pulse.

Bug#560130: gnome-keybinding-properties: numerous UI bugs when adding custom shortcuts

2009-12-08 Thread Aaron Barany
Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:2.28.1-1
Severity: normal

When adding custom shortcuts to gnome-keybinding-properties, there are numerous
UI errors:
- After adding the first custom shortcut, no additional custom shortcuts will
appear in the dialog until you close and re-open gnome-keybinding-properties.
- When you remove a custom shortcut, oftentimes the next time you launch
gnome-keybinding-properties a blank custom shortcut named Unknown Action
will be present. This cannot be removed normally, though it will go away if you
edit it and press Apply. It sometimes will re-appear the next time you run
gnome-keybinding-properties.
- Whenever you single-click on a custom shortcut, the edit dialog is brought
up. If you wish to do another action on that shortcut, such as remove it, you
must first cancel out of that dialog. It should select the item on a single
click, and only bring up the edit dialog on a double click or when pressing an
Edit button. (which should be added)
