Same problem here.

Installing nvidia-kernel-dkms from unstable (455.23.04-1) works.

Bug#851066: Request for removal

2017-11-01 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Please remove this package if fixing the bug is not an option. In the
current state this package is just a really big security nightmare.
Either fix the bug or remove the package. Don't let users assume having
an up-to-date version of flash installed. This is just dangerous.

Alex

 Hi!

I am currently crawling through the open pidgin bugs.

 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=712986

Is the crash at startup still a reproducible problem? I cannot reproduce it.

 Thank you and Greetings
 Peter

Bug#769921: util-linux: fstrim job increases boot time significantly

2014-11-17 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: util-linux
Version: 2.25.2-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

from time to time fstrim gets started during boot. This leads to the
following symptoms:

- after booting the screen stays blank for about one minute until the login
  manager (gdm) appears
- after logging in via gdm it takes about two more minutes until the desktop
  (GNOME 3) appears
- after the desktop appears it takes still ages for applications to start,
  until fstrim finished

All in all it takes a significant amount of time until the system gets
usable. This is the exact opposite of what I would expect when running from
a SSD.

I guess this is affected by the util-linux package and the file
/lib/systemd/system/fstrim.timer but I'm not sure about this. If this
behaviour is caused by a different package please move the bug report
accordingly.

Alex

you know the machine is idle. If this goes off on a busy server you

the temporary lack of free disk space.

True. Alternative options would be to store the time of the last fstrim run
and provide some indication if the last run is too long ago (via a message
popup or system mail). Or trying to detect idle times during which fstrim
can be run, aborting it as soon as the system tries to perform real work.
The second approach surely isn't easy to implement and will probably require
an additional deamon to be run.

Bug#755020: [nvidia-driver] upgrading system left my box without X/network

2014-07-18 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nvidia
Followup-For: Bug #755020

Hi,

same problem here. But I managed to downgrade to the previous version by
following Thiago's instructions. Esentially I just added this line to
/etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20140715T222335Z/ testing main
contrib non-free

Then after performing an apt-get update, I downgraded with the help of
aptitude (unfortunately apt-get didn't manage to resolve the conflicts
properly):

aptitude install nvidia-driver=331.67-2 xserver-xorg-video-nvidia=331.67-2

I accepted the second solution offered by aptitude (downgrading lots of
xserver-xorg packages) and that's it. Just don't perform an upgrade until
the problem is fixed.

same problem here. The blue overview preview appears after some time and

Bug#728717: xfce4-terminal: Fails to forward terminal size information

Hi,

this bug is gone at both of my systems. I checked a few dependencies of
xfce4-terminal but couldn't find any related information in their
changelogs. I guess some of the libs got updated and thus fixed the problem.

Bug#593149: Incomplete description for some options in man page tar.1

2014-03-05 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: tar
Version: 1.27.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #593149

Hi,

this bug still exists. Many options have a description which is chopped off,
including:

  --occurrence
  -k, --keep-old-files
  --atime-preserve
  --delay-directory-restore
  -s, --preserve-order, --same-order
  --totals

and others.

This omits important information and renders the manpage pretty useless.

Alex

What's the reason for this huge delay?

Bug#716806: XBMC is outdated

2013-12-14 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: xbmc
Version: 2:11.0~git20120510.82388d5-1
Followup-For: Bug #716806

According to
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Installing_XBMC_for_Linux#Arch
The Debian repository maintainers have rejected XBMC v12's entry into
their default repository (which also feeds into the default Ubuntu
repositories) due to the fact that XBMC uses an internal FFmpeg, instead
of system wide libav, as demanded by Debian. XBMC is unable to do this
currently for various reasons, one of which is that it would take a great
amount of time to switch over to that library.

I don't know if there has been any further progress on this issue.

Bug#728998: ncmpcpp: Loading playlists stops on encountering missing file

2013-11-07 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: ncmpcpp
Version: 0.5.10-1.1
Severity: normal

Hi,

loading a playlist immediately stops when a file referred in the playlist
can't be found. I would expect the program to continue loading the remaining
playlist and I'm almost sure that this has been the behavior in the past.
The mpd client 'mpc' also continues loading the playlist regardless of
missing files when invoked with 'mpc load playlist'.

Alex

Bug#728717: xfce4-terminal: Fails to forward terminal size information

2013-11-04 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: xfce4-terminal
Version: 0.6.2-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

resizing the terminal breaks the visual appearance of several ncurses
applications. That is, enlarging the window does not lead to an enlargement
of the application's graphical interface and shrinking the window hides the
corresponding parts of the application. It seems like the applications don't
get notified about the new terminal size.

The applications affected are for example: top, screen, htop, ncmpcpp,
abook.
Interestingly the following applications seem to be not affected: aptitude,
mutt, nano, joe.

This only happens with xfce4-terminal. Other terminals I tested don't show
this strange behavior, including: xterm, gnome-terminal, lxterminal, rxvt.
Hence I assume this issue is related to xfce4-terminal or one of its
dependencies.

I encountered this bug after a recent upgrade and had no problems before
with xfce4-terminal. Unfortunately a lot of applications and libraries have
been changed by this update so I don't know which specific package could
have caused it. But I guess 2-3 weeks ago this bug has not been present on
my system (using 'testing' the whole time).

I'm not very familiar with the internals of terminal resizing but if I
missed some important information just tell me.

Alex

Bug#706407: xfce4-terminal: ncurses-mess with gdb in TUI-mode

2013-11-04 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: xfce4-terminal
Version: 0.6.2-3
Followup-For: Bug #706407

Hi,

I can confirm the described problems but I'm not quite sure who's fault it
is. While the bug doesn't occur with lxterminal I can reproduce it with
other terminal emulators, including xterm, rxvt and gnome-terminal. So there
are definately more terminals affected than just xfce4-terminal.

Bug#728717: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#728717: xfce4-terminal: Fails to forward terminal size information

2013-11-04 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Hi,

Hence I assume this issue is related to xfce4-terminal or one of its
  dependencies.

Can you try with sakura too? Also, it might be helpful to try with a
different user (or more exactly an empty terminal config).

sakura doesn't show these problems.

Interestingly a new user neither. But I couldn't figure out which config is
involved. Removing ~/.config/xfce4/ didn't solve the problem and there is no
~/.Xdefaults file. And even more confusing, after changing a single setting
in xfce4-terminal the problem also shows up with the new user. And it
persists, even after removing ~/.config/xfce4/ and rebooting. So there must
be another config involved that is created by xfce4-terminal. Any
suggestions which file that could be? Does changing any setting lead to the
same problem on your system?

Also, I wonder if the shell can be involved here. Can you tell us which
 one you use?

Both bash and dash show these symptoms.

Regards
Alex

Bug#728717: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#728717: xfce4-terminal: Fails to forward terminal size information

2013-11-04 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Hi,

after further investiations it seems to be a timing issue. Sometimes it
works without problems, but most of the time it doesn't. Even with a new
user and a clean home it sometimes occurs on the first run of
xfce4-terminal but not always. When setting the background to be transparent
the problem seems to occur more likely but this could just be a coincidence.

Bug#718510: fusedav: login can't be aborted

2013-08-01 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: fusedav
Version: 0.2-3.1

Hi,

the authentication process can't be aborted. Entering the wrong password or
no password at all will just ask for the password again, infinitely.
Pressing strg-c or sending SIGTERM will just print *** Caught signal ***
but the login process continues, infinitely.

The only way to abort the login process is to send SIGKILL. I consider this
a bug.

meanwhile this bug DOES affect testing, too. Scrobbling is no longer
possible because the plugin fails to load.

I wonder why this bug is still open after two months as the fix seems easy.

2011-06-04 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Hi again,

moved my config aside and attached both a log without evdev loaded (as it is
the current default after booting my system) and with evdev loaded manually.
Like before, without loading evdev manually I can't use my keyboard and
mouse at all. Hope the logs will help to figure out the problem.

By the way, which system component is supposed to load the evdev module at
startup if required?

Using X's auto detection results in the same problem, I can't use any input

You can use fbdev instead of vesa as fallback, it works fine with KMS
(but does not do any mode setting, so you can't change the resolution).

Using fbdev leads to a lockup of the whole system. Blank monitor, no
keyboard input any more, even SSH doesn't work. Seems like a kernel panic or
something similar. But I guess this belongs to a separate bug report.

Also I recognized when using vesa and disabling KMS, I can't switch back to
a virtual console or the screen goes blank. Even switching back to X leaves
me with a blank screen. But I guess this belongs to a separate bug report,
too :).

Man, I can remember graphics drivers being less complicated under Linux five
years ago, what happened to them?

Bug#598624: xserver-xorg-video-intel: 830M crashes with 'Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error'

2010-10-01 Thread Alexander Heinlein
One thing to try would be to install the 2.6.36-rc kernel from
experimental and see if the hang with opera is reproducible.
It is reproducible with 2.6.36-rc5-686 version 2.6.36~rc5-1~experimental.1.
I guess I am doomed with this old chip :(.

Another thing that bothers me with the new kernels is that I have to enable
KMS to use the intel driver, but disable it if I want to use vesa (the
current fallback for me). Changing the bootloader configuration and
rebooting just to switch the graphics driver doesn't seem right.

If you need any additional information, let me know.

Alex

I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel=2:2.12.0+shadow-2 and the required
libdrm-intel1=2.4.21-1~squeeze3, but couldn't find 2.6.32-24.
linux-image-2.6.32-5-686 has only version 2.6.32-23.

But now X refuses to start and complains with:

Xorg log is attached again. Am I missing some package or is this due to the
2.5.32-23 kernel? Also, dmesg reports:

I don't know if this message is related to the problem.

Bug#596071: python-pygraphviz: weird behaviour when naming file to read 'graph.dot'

2010-09-08 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: python-pygraphviz
Version: 1.0-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

When loading a graph from a file and using 'graph.dot' as the filename, the
program acts very weird and always reports:
Warning: syntax error in line 1 near '.'
Although there is no syntax error. Renaming the file from 'graph.dot' so
something other like g.dot doesn't issue the error and loads the file
correctly.

example file:
graph s {
 a -- b
}

example script:
#!/usr/bin/python
import pygraphviz
g = pygraphviz.AGraph(graph.dot)
print sorted(g.edges())

Both files are also attached.

Bug#516128: aptitude: Using german localisation causes huge memory usage

2010-07-04 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.11.11-1~lenny1
Followup-For: Bug #516128

Hi,

I got exactly the same problem. Running 'aptitude' (or e.g. 'aptitude
show') and 'apt-cache show/policy' consumes almost all memory including
RAM and swap with locales set to de_DE.UTF-8. The problem can be solved
by switching to en_GB.utf8. May be the fault of libapt, though.

Hi Andreas,

Please try if you can build the module using the nvidia-kernel-source
package and module-assistant. Attach the logfiles you get from your
failed builds, the logfiles are loacted here:
   find /var/lib/dkms -name '*.log'
   ls /var/cache/modass/

the logs are attached, both operations aborted with the same error.

Bug#582748: nvidia-kernel-dkms: fails to build module due to missing files

2010-05-29 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Hi Andreas,

good news, I found the reason: ccache
So far I don't know why it breaks the installation process. The source
compiles nevertheless, some of the created object files just have the wrong
name. Interestingly, this does not happen on any other source code here.
Also, I have ccache running for a very long time and haven't had problems in
the past, even with the nvidia installer. Maybe you spot the reason in the
given information below, otherwise maybe ccache should be disabled by
setting CCACHE_DISABLE=1 before compiling the source.

After the failed build, what is the content of /usr/src/modules/nvidia?
 ls -la /usr/src/modules/nvidia

I guess you mean /usr/src/modules/nvidia-kernel

Bug#582748: nvidia-kernel-dkms: fails to build module due to missing files

2010-05-23 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: nvidia-kernel-dkms
Version: 195.36.24-1
Severity: important

Hi,

building the kernel moduel fails with the following error message:
fixdep: /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/195.36.24/build/.nv_gvi.o.d: No such file or
directory

The same message occurs when running the nvidia install script manually. The
only solution for me is to run the following commands to create the relevant
symlinks inside the build directory (during the run of the installer script
resp. nvidia-kernel-dkms with the help of a little loop):
 ln -s .tmp_nv_gvi.d .nv_gvi.o.d
 ln -s .tmp_nv-vm.d .nv-vm.o.d
 ln -s .tmp_os-agp.d .os-agp.o.d
 ln -s .tmp_os-interface.d .os-interface.o.d
 ln -s .tmp_os-registry.d .os-registry.o.d
 ln -s .tmp_nv-i2c.d .nv-i2c.o.d
 ln -s .tmp_nvacpi.d .nvacpi.o.d
 ln -s .nvidia.mod.o.tmp .nvidia.mod.o.d

Afterwards, the installation succeeds.

Haven't figured out yet why the installer creates the wrong file names, but
this problem also occurs a few times when searching the web.

Regards,
Alex

Hi,

Hi,

documentation for the extensions, and more information on developing xmonad
extensions, which isn't available. I guess libghc6-xmonad-contrib-doc is
the right package name and should be mentioned there.

Bug#575898: tuxguitar: throws NoClassDefFoundError exception on startup

2010-03-30 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Hi

reinstalling libswt-gtk-3.5-java did solve the problem, the symbolic link
/usr/share/java/swt.jar was missing. I guess there went something wrong on
upgrading this or another java package. Tuxguitar's startup script ony looks
for swt.jar and swt3.2-gtk.jar in /usr/lib/java/, not for any other
swt-*gtk*-jar, so it couldn't find /usr/lib/java/swt-gtk-3.5.1.jar.

Bug#565523: hunspell: exits after detecting latex document

2010-01-16 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: hunspell
Version: 1.2.8-5

Hi,

it seems like hunspell exits when it detects a latex document. It detects
wrong spelled words up to the first latex keyword and then just exits
whether -t is specified or not. Explicitly specifying -H to handle the input
file as HTML prevents hunspell from exiting and analyzes the whole document.

Bug#553456: inkscape: complains about UniConvertor

Hi Wolfi,

the error just did reoccur and I gave google a try and found this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/487653
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/418242
In fact, there is a java-based program running monitoring my clipboard, so
this is the reason for this strange behaviour. Dunno if anything can be done
about this. Seems like inkscape is the only program suffering from it.

The manpage lists --airport-id as a command line argument, but instead
--airport has to be used.

Do I understand your report right, you just open a new document, create some

 I can't reproduce this here.
Yes :).

/home/user is a strange path. I guess your username is not user, is it?
Yeah, I just replaced it. Sorry for the obfuscation.

Sorry, at the moment I don't have any clue what's going on here :-(
The error messages below seem to indicate something in your python setup,
 but...
What exactly do you mean with python setup? I never changed any python
related configuration, neither globally nor locally. Also, deleting
~/.inkscape does not help.

I really don't get it as cryptsetup is invoked the same way as in prior

Sounds like a cryptsetup bug, doesn't it ? Or is it a problem with the
newer version of libselinux ? Do you have a SELinux-active kernel ?

What does syslog/dmesg say ? And what if you run manually cryptsetup
with the exact same command-line ?

I don't have SELinux active. Neither syslog nor dmesg contain anything about
pmount/cryptsetup, and invoking cryptsetup manually with the paramteters
from pmount's output (/sbin/cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb1 _dev_sdb1) works
without problems.

May this be some environment specific problem?

Bug#536557: sigsegv on diskiograph

2009-09-01 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Hi Cesare,

sorry for taking so long to answer. I took a look at the config again and
noticed that I passed a number as first argument to diskiograph instead of a
device (dunno how that happend, maybe some older config setting?).
Nevertheless, conky should not segfault on that, here's the backtrace:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

And by the way, using apt-source to build the package with debugging symbols

configure aborts with

2009-02-14 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: dash
Version: 0.5.5.1-1

Hi.

I've got a similar problem. Sometimes hal doesn't start anymore since the
last dash upgrade. And cryptsetup (2:1.0.6-7) stopped asking for the
passphrase during boot for disks listed in /etc/crypttab.

Downgrading dash to the testing version fixes these problems.

Bug#497022: ccache: cache misses and internal errors when using cmake

2008-08-29 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: ccache
Version: 2.4-15
Severity: normal

Hi.

When compiling with cmake, ccache doesn't work properly. There are
constantly cache misses and internal errors when recompiling the same code
which has been compiled before. The produced binary is correct, tough. But
ccache is pretty useless here because the cache doesn't work.

Tell me how to provide more information about this issue.

Regards,
Alex

Bug#497081: links2 sends Connection: keep-alive on -dump

2008-08-29 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: links2
Version: 2.1pre37-1.1
Severity: normal

Hi.

When running links2 with -dump it sends 'Connection: keep-alive', which
doesn't make sense because it terminates after receiving the response.
lynx sends 'Connection: close', which is the correct way.

Alex

Bug#495509: cryptsetup: timeout option does not work anymore

2008-08-18 Thread Alexander Heinlein
Package: cryptsetup
Version: 2:1.0.6-6
Severity: normal

Hi.

cryptsetup ignores the timout option specified in /etc/crypttab, and also
the one from /etc/default/cryptdisks.

My /etc/crypttab:
sda6 /dev/sda6 none luks,timeout=6,tries=2,checkargs=xfs

Also calling cryptsetup directly with the -t option ignores the timeout.
cryptsetup from stable takes care of this option.

Alex
