Bug#407574: kdvi: Please depend on texlive as an alternative to tetex

2007-01-19 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: kdvi
Version: 4:3.5.5-2
Severity: wishlist

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Kdvi recommends tetex-bin. It should also recommend some texlive packages as
an alternative.

I think that kdvi uses only fonts from the TeX system, so the
texlive-fonts-recommended package might be the right alternative.

Thanks,

Gabor Braun

Bug#354100: About your bug: kdebase-bin: Some keys insert bad characters in KDE applications on the Debian BTS

2007-01-10 Thread Braun Gabor
Hi,

 - you are still experiencing this bug (adding in what version)
 - the bug was already fixed,
 - or if you have extra information on how reproduce this bug.

Meanwhile, the system was upgraded.
I cannot reproduce the bug but I still have a (much smaller) problem with the
keyboard under KDE when the display manager is kdm.

As for the original problem, I remember the following:
1) When I still experienced the bug, I
swithced the display manager from kdm to gdm, and after that the keyboard
worked perfectly.

2) One of my emails did not reach BTS, so I include it here
Inclusion-
_ do you have changed anything in kcontrol in the xkb options, or in
_the layout ? which layout did you choose in xorg.conf ?

Nothing is changed in kcontrol. The only option selected is to show the flag
of the country (but it is not shown).

The relevant part of xorg.conf:

Section InputDevice
Identifier  Generic Keyboard
Driver  keyboard
Option  CoreKeyboard
Option  XkbRules  xorg
Option  XkbModel  pc105
Option  XkbLayout hu
EndSection

_ I don't know anybody in the KDE team that is from Hungary. Do you know
_anyone that has the bug too ?

Unfortunately, no.

I get the right characters if I start the applications from a shell. I get
wrong characters if I start them otherwise (from KDE menu, panel, or typing
Alt+F2 and then the application name).
End of inclusion

The present situation is the following:

1) The error messages I have reported are gone.
2) The configuration is the same as in the included email.
3) Dead keys produce no accents when logging in from kdm. This is true for
all applications (KDE and non-KDE ones).
Other keys work as expected. However, xev reports dead keys correctly.
4) The keyboard works when logging in from gdm, including dead keys.

Some snippets from ~/.xsession-errors, which differ between the two display
managers:

Bug#405550: aptitude: Missing space in Hungarian message for package upgrade

2007-01-04 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.4-1
Severity: minor
Tags: l10n

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Aptitude displays most messages in Hungarian.
When moving to a package to be upgraded, a text like the following appears in
the lower frame.

A(z) xserver-xorg a(z) 1:7.1.0-8 verzióról a(z) 1:7.1.0-9verzióra lesz
frissítve.

(The package name and the versions vary.)
The problem: there ought to be a space between the second version number (in
this case 1:7.1.0-9) and the following word verzióra, so e.g. the above
text should read

A(z) xserver-xorg a(z) 1:7.1.0-8 verzióról a(z) 1:7.1.0-9 verzióra lesz
frissítve.

Bug#401446: Strange names in RC big list: wrong encoding?

2006-12-03 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: normal

1) This report is about the page:

http://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/debian/all.html

Since it changes often, I mention the time present at the top of the page:

Sun Dec 3 14:23:00 UTC 2006

2) Now the problem: I copy some parts of the page here (this is the text which
I see without formatting)

Package: antigravitaattori (debian/main).
Maintainer: Gürkan Sengün [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: e3 (debian/main).
Maintainer: Paweł Więcek [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: elfsh (debian/main).
Maintainer: Andrés Roldán [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The name of the maintainers seem strange: do they really contain e.g. the
trademark sign and the copyright sign?

I guess this is an encoding problem:
the page is delivered in iso-8859-1 encoding but
the maintainers are (incorrectly) encoded in UTF-8.
To justify this, I present the above snippets here when I manually select
UTF-8 for this page:

Package: antigravitaattori (debian/main).

Bug#400058: texdoctk does not find any documentation

2006-11-23 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tetex-bin
Version: 3.0-23
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I start texdoctk. I select Fundamentals/general references. Then I select
the first line User's guide and click on View. The following message
appears: ERROR usrguide.dvi not found cancelling.

There seems to be nothing special about User's guide, if I select any
document in any category, I receive a not found error. (I have not tried
them all only some of them randomly.)

Other facts:

1) The documentations are present, e.g. usrguide.dvi is here:

/usr/share/texmf-tetex/doc/latex/base/usrguide.dvi.gz

I can view it with texdoc usruide (and also other documentation).

2) In texdoctk: clicking on settings, the paths in the upcoming window:

Distribution documentation root path(s):  /usr/share/texmf/doc
Local documentation root path: /usr/local/share/texmf/doc

I miss the following from the distribution paths:

/usr/share/texmf-tetex/doc
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/doc

I do not understand why these are missing.
/usr/share/texmf-tetex/texdoctk/texdocrc says

# root of doc directory (from $TEXMFMAIN and $TEXMFDIST)
TEXDOCPATH=doc

kpsexpand reports
  $TEXMFMAIN to be /usr/share/texmf
  $TEXMFDIST to be /usr/share/texmf-{texlive,tetex}

BTW, the man page of texdoctk refers to a system wide configuration file
($TEXMFMAIN)/texdoctk/texdocrc.defaults
but this does not exist. I have $TEXMFMAIN/texdoctk/texdocrc instead.

Also, the man page refers to both $HOMETEXMF and $TEXMFHOME. Is this
intentional?

Bug#396563: katomic: Shown best score is not the best

2006-11-07 Thread Braun Gabor
_I doubt the tables will be merged. It is a fairly trivial fix, though, to
_just use one table or the other. [Highscores Level #] has been written to
_by all 3.5.x versions of katomic, and [High Scores Level #] by previous
_versions (including the version in sarge). Which should we use?

It does not matter provided previous formats are recognized.

To support upgrade form sarge, [High Scores Level #] must be recognized.

I propose to recognize both headers. Otherwise upgrade from some version will
result in losing the high scores. If both types are present for a level then
use [Highscores Level #] and ignore the other. This will keep high scores of
3.5.x versions.

Since other packages latex-cjk-* refer to latex-cjk-common, I guess this is a
misprint: latex-cjk-base should be replaced with latex-cjk-common.

Bug#380634: tellico: Field names not displayed

2006-09-21 Thread Braun Gabor
Hi,

I think the following is a fix to the problem:

--- po/hu.po2006-05-08 07:24:38.0 +0200
+++ po/hu.po-new2006-09-07 19:32:56.0 +0200

 msgid
 _: Edit Label\n
 %1:
-msgstr Cimke szerkesztése:
+msgstr %1:

 #: gui/kwidgetlister.cpp:58
 msgid

This is just a correction of a translation.
This change is already present in the upstream source of 1.2.2.
I have not checked nut the bug is probably fixed in the new Debian package.

Anyway, for package 1.1.6-1.1:
I have generated from the patched hu.po a new .mo file with msgfmt.
I replaced /usr/share/locale/hu/LC_MESSAGES/tellico.mo with the new .mo file.
After this, the bug disappeared: no Argument missing errors, field labels
correctly displayed.

IMHO, the reason of the bug is the following:

1) The above translation is used at 3 places in the sources (according to
hu.po):
   configdialog.cpp:338 gui/fieldwidget.cpp:101 gui/fieldwidget.cpp:188

2) All places the translation is invoked by a construct

   i18n(Edit Label, %1:).arg(STUFF)

   where STUFF stands for an expression returning the field label.

   This does the following: the function i18n() returns the translation.
Then .arg(STUFF) replaces %1 in the translation with STUFF. Now %1 does not
appear in the original translation, which resulted in the Argument missing
error and the end result became independent of STUFF.
  The modified translation does contain %1, so STUFF appears in the end
result.

I hope this helps fixing this bug soon.

Best wishes,

Gabor Braun

I do have the suggested package p7zip installed but it does not provide 7za.
It provides 7zr for handling .7z archives.

So I think that either ark should depend on p7zip-full (providing 7za)

Bug#238463: konqueror: Should redirect internally not via meta refresh

2006-08-06 Thread Braun Gabor
Followup-For: Bug #238463
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:3.5.3-2

*** Please type your report below this line ***

For me info:/ln leads the following page (HTML source):

htmlheadtitleDoing redirection/title
meta http-equiv=refresh content=0;
url=info:coreutils/ln%20invocation
body
h1Redirecting  /h1
pIf you are not automatically taken to a new page, a
href=info:coreutils/ln%20invocationclick here/a to continue.
/body
/html

The problem with this is that it requires (1) either an extra click form the
user or (2) configure konqueror to allow automatic refresh via meta tags.

The problem with (2) is that the setting applies to all web pages (which I
personally do not want). Also note that the HTML standard [1] discourages
using meta http-equiv=refersh ... for redirection.

So I think the proper solution should be an internal redirection.

Best wishes,

Gabor Braun

The tellico window appears with an empty collection. I want to add a new entry
so I select the menu entry Gyüjtemény - Új bejegyzés (this is Hungarian.
In English it should be something like Collection - New entry).

A new window appears with several tabs. Every tab contains some modifiable
fields with prepended with Cimke szerkesztése:. However, I would expect to
see the names of the fields of the bibliography so that I know what I should
write to each field.

I marked this bug important because this is a serious obstacle for
adding/updating entries since I have to figure out the name of every field in
the dialog.

Bug#316258: kate: Kate opens documents with wrong encoding

2006-07-16 Thread Braun Gabor
Followup-For: Bug #316258
Package: kate
Version: 4:3.5.3-2

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Hi,

I am not the original bug reporter but I think I have a similar problem.

General problem: I open an UTF-8 file and kate displays it. Non-ascii
characters are displayed as a sequence of totally different characters.

Then I go to the menu Tools-Encoding.
I see that 'Western European (iso 8859-1)' is ticked. I select 'Unicode
(utf8)' and after that most of the characters are displayed correctly (I
think the exceptions are those for which there is no font installed.)

This happens e.g. with all the .desktop coming with KDE, for example

/usr/share/applications/kde/kate.desktop

The same happens for XML files, which are correctly recognized as XML files
(as is visible due to coloring of the file) but not the encoding.

I expect kate to autodetect UTF-8 encoding since false positives are rare.

Best wishes,

Gabor Braun

Bug#350768: tex4ht: \text{\(..\)} produces not well formed mathml

2006-03-05 Thread Braun Gabor

Additional notes for the bug I have reported.

I guess the problem is in the definition of \AA:text in mahml.4ht and
mozilla.4ht. There is a \Configure{$} in the definition ensuring that
math between $ work but no \Configure{()} for math between \( and \).

So the bug maybe fixed by adding \Configure{()} with similar arguments as
those of \Configure{$} but adding two $ to enter and exit math mode.

Therefore, I suggest the following patch, which seems to work for me.
To avoid repetition, I have introduced a new \Configure{$,()} for
simultaneously configuring $ and (). (I am not sure how to handle the
different number of arguments of these configurations.)

Patch:

Bug#355440: w3-dtd-mathml: Missing style attribute in xhtml+mathml dtd

2006-03-05 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: w3-dtd-mathml
Version: 2.0.0.0-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

This is a problem with the following DTD:

/usr/share/xml/schema/w3c/mathml/dtd/xhtml-math11-f.dtd

The attribute style is completely missing from the DTD for all
elements. Note that it is present in the upstream version:

http://www.w3.org/Math/DTD/mathml2/xhtml-math11-f.dtd

A sample document on which this can be tested:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0//EN
http://www.w3.org/Math/DTD/mathml2/xhtml-math11-f.dtd;
html xmlns=http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml;
head
  titleTest document/title
/head
body style=background-color: yellow
pSOme text/p
/body
/html

This validates under http://validator.w3.org (which uses the upstream DTD) but
not with xmllint:

xmllint -noout -valid test.xhtml
test.xhtml:8: element body: validity error : No declaration for attribute style
of element body
body style=background-color: yellow

I recommend to update the dtd from upstream.

Kind regards,

Gabor Braun

Bug#354100: kdebase-bin: Some keys insert bad characters in KDE applications

2006-02-23 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: kdebase-bin
Version: 4:3.5.1-1
Severity: important
Tags: l10n

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Konqueror, kwrite, konsole inserts unexpected characters for some keys:

Odoubleacute  Otilde
udoubleacute  ucircumflex
Udoubleacute  Ucircumflex
Lstroke   pound sterling
lstroke   superscript three
dstroke   latin small letter eth

This problem seems to be present only in KDE applications. Other applications
(Emacs, XEmacs, GNOME stuff) seem to interpret the keys correctly.

I have reported this bug against kdebase-bin because ~/.xsession-errors contain
a possibly related error message (the one with 'keyboard' in it) mentioning a
file from this package:

Xsession: X session started for gabor at 2006. feb. 23., csütörtök, 09.42.12

I think this bug is important because it is a major obstacle for editing
Hungarian texts.

Bug#350412: tex4ht: Option frames leads to incorrect DOCTYPEs

The dcument types are correct in the current version. Great! Thank you!

I wonder why the xml declaration ?xml ... ? is omitted with option 'frames'
in the frameset document and in xhtml+mathml documents but not in pure xhtml
documents. I think the declaration should be present unless the user asks not
to.

To be more precise, with the same input file as before:

mk4ht xhlatex test.tex xhtml,frames

produces a test.html without xml declaration and two other files with a
declaration. Replacing xhlatex with xhmlatex or mozilla produces three output
documents, none of which has an xml declaration.

If I use the same command lines but without xhtml,frames then there is only
one output file with an xml declaration.

Sorry that I am continuously asking questions.

Best wishes,

This is a problem with

/usr/share/doc/texmf/tex4ht/tex4ht_doc.html

At the bottom of the page, the tilde in the URL of [1] and [2]
reference is not displayed but the links contain it. Also the URL
in [1] is incorrect: TeX4ht/ is missing before mn.html.

I think the problem is with the source file tex4ht_doc.tex.gz:
note that latex interprets ~ as a non-breakable space and not as a
tilde character. As for the hyperref package, arguments denoted by
URL are exceptions, as they interpret # and ~ as normal characters.

I suggest that, since you want to display the URL you link to, you
use \url{...} instead of \href{...}{...}. Doing that you have to
type every URL only once not twice.

Therefore I suggest the following patch, which replaces \href with
\url and corrects the URL in [1]:

--- tex4ht_doc.orig.tex 2006-02-12 15:20:18.0 +0100
+++ tex4ht_doc.tex  2006-02-12 15:20:51.0 +0100

Bug#350412: tex4ht: Option frames leads to incorrect DOCTYPEs

2006-02-06 Thread Braun Gabor
_ I don't like the idea of forced .html extension.
_
_OK. I removed this enforcement. -eitan

Thank you.

I am not convinced this bug is fixed.

I have unpacked the *.4ht files from directory texmf/tex/generic/tex4ht of the
archive http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~gurari/TeX4ht/bugfixes.html into a
separate directory. I have put the file test.tex also here (the file in the
original bug report).

The command line

mk4ht xhmlatex test.tex xhtml,frames

produces three files: test.html, test2.html and test3.html. All of these have
XHTML 1.0 Frameset document types. I find the doctype of test.html OK but I
expect test2.html and test3.html to have XHTML+MathML document types.

Replacing xhmlatex in the above command line with mzlatex, xhlatex or htlatex
produces correct document types.

Best wishes,

Gabor Braun

Bug#351260: hyperref+float: broken links to floats

2006-02-03 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tetex-extra
Version: 3.0-13
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Pdflatex reports some warnings on the input file below:

! pdfTeX warning (ext4): destination with the same identifier (name{Item.3}) ha
s been already used, duplicate ignored

! pdfTeX warning (dest): name{figure.1} has been referenced but does not exist,
 replaced by a fixed one

These do not disappear if run multiple times.

When compiled with latex (i.e. dvi output) then some links are shown
incorrect by xdvi:

In the list of figures, clicking on the link to the figure, a
mnessage displayed in the bottom:

Error: anchor figure.1 not found.

In the last line, the links 1, 2 point to where expected. However,
3 points to the top of the figure instead of the third item of the
list. (xdvi shows this by an arrow when clicked on a link.)

All in all, it seems that the following happens:
For some reason the figure gets the identifier Item.3 instead of
figure.1. This shadows the third item in the list, which should
have identifier Item.3.

This explanation justifies the behaviours of pdflatex and xdvi.

Suggested patch:

The added [EMAIL PROTECTED] macro is meant to fix the identifier of
the anchor. The additional \begingroup, \endgroup is for mkaing the
effect of [EMAIL PROTECTED] local. (I don't know if this extra
grouping is needed.)

Last, the patch seems to make the problem disappear: no pdflatex
errors, links pointing to where they should.

Cheers,

Gabor Braun

Bug#350763: kdvi: Warning on dvips hyperlinks seems obsolete

2006-01-31 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: kdvi
Version: 4:3.4.3-4

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I quote the end of page 6 from
/usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/kdvi/KDVI-features.dvi.gz:

quote
Warning.
On some installations, the hyperref macro package is configured to
generate PostScript hyperlinks for dvips by default. On these
systems, using the line

\usepackage{hyperref}

will generate DVI file whose hyperlinks are not visible in KDVI.
Worse, KDVI will call the ghostview PostScript interpreter for every
page, which makes the display very slow.
/quote

For me, KDVI properly displays dvips hyperlinks. I haven't noticed
that the display is slow either.

Therefore the warning may not apply any more.

For completeness:

I have expected that the file ImageMagick.svg is created from

complete nonsense as in bug #261075.

I do not think this is the same bug as #261075 becuase the SVG

Bug#350411: tex4ht: fails creating image but png

2006-01-29 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tex4ht
Version: 20051223-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***

A test file named test.tex:

\documentclass[a4paper]{article}

\begin{document}
\begin{equation}
  \label{eq:1}
  2 + 2 = 5
\end{equation}
\end{document}

Test cases:

1) Testing gif format:

Command line: htlatex test.tex html,gif

Error reported on terminal:

System call: dvipng -T tight -x 1400 -D 72 -bg Transparent -pp -gif
1:1 test.idv -o test0x.gif
This is dvipng 1.5 Copyright 2002-2005 Jan-?ke Larsson

dvipng: Fatal error, bad page list specifier (-pp).

2) Testing jpg format:

Command line: htlatex test.tex html,jpg

Error reported on terminal:

System call: dvips -Ppdf -mode ibmvga -D 110 -fzztest.ps
This is dvips(k) 5.95a Copyright 2005 Radical Eye Software
(www.radicaleye.com)
dvips: ! DVI file must not be a pipe.
--- Warning --- System return: 256

No image file is created during the above tests.
I expect that one is created for the equation.

I think the problem is due to incorrect commands in the
file tex4ht.env for the (default) dvipng method.

For the G.gif method, the -gif option is (badly) put in the place
for the argument of -pp. The solution is to move -gif to a proper
place.

For the general G. method, the input dvi file (and page range) is
missing from the command line. I suggest to complete this line as in
other lines containing dvips command.

Summarizing, I propose the patch:

Bug#350412: tex4ht: Option frames leads to incorrect DOCTYPEs

2006-01-29 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tex4ht
Version: 20051223-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

This is a long report. A short table of contents:

  1 Tests showing the problem
  2 Proposal for fix
  2.1 Suggested patch
  2.2 Tests that the patch passes
  2.3 Explanation of patch

* 1 Tests showing the problem

Test file named test.tex:

\documentclass[a4paper]{article}

\begin{document}

\section{A section}
\label{sec:section}

\begin{equation}
  \label{eq:1}
  2 + 2 = 5
\end{equation}
\end{document}

Tests producing incorrect document types:

1) Command line: mk4ht xhmlatex test.tex xhtml,frames

   Document types of output files:

   test.html:  XHTML 1.0 Frameset
   test2.html: XHTML 1.0 Transitional
   test3.html: XHTML 1.0 Transitional

2) Command line: mk4ht mzlatex test.tex xhtml,frames
   Also for: mk4ht mzlatex test.tex xhtml,frames,portable

   Document types of output files:

   test.xml:   XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0
   test2.xml:  XHTML 1.0 Transitional
   test3.xml:  XHTML 1.0 Transitional

Expected document types:

   test.html and test.xml:   XHTML 1.0 Frameset
   all the other files: XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0

   For mzlatex with 'pmathml' no DOCTYPE for the other files since
   none is produced wihout the 'frames' option.

Rationale for expectation:

The main file test.html/test.xml contains frames. Only the Frameset
document type allows this.

The other files contain the content of the original document and no
frames. Since mathml is requested, the document type must allow
mathml content, i.e. it should be XHTML plus MathMl.

** 2.2 Tests that the patch passes:
Command lines:

* For all other documents and the main document without 'frames':
  * Transitional for htlatex and xhlatex

  * No DOCTYPE for mzlatex with 'pmathml'

** 2.3 Explanation of patch

I think the problem is that modules \Configure{DOCTYPE} commands
interact badly. I suggest the following method:

It indicates by setting \:DTD to xhtml that xhtml modules should
\Configure{DOCTYPE} at Preamble time. (I think this is already the
intention of this macro.) Irrespective of \:DTD modules also set

Bug#347931: tetex-doc: Broken links to style files

2006-01-13 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tetex-doc
Version: 3.0-11
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***

There are several incorrect links:

1) Changing the texmf root from /usr/share/texmf to
/usr/share/texmf-tetex caused several links to break. The supplied
patch replaces these (relative) links with the correct absolute
paths. (I haven't checked all links manually.)

2) Instead of saying You should open that file as
/usr/share/texmf/doc/index.html, please specify the base URI
using base href= This will ensure that
relative links work, even if the file is opened with another name.
The supplied patch does this.

3) Links to applications: please link to the application's homepage
instead of its vendor's. The supplied patch does this for kdvi,
kghostview, kpdf (which is incorrectly spelled as kdf) and acroread.

The links for kdvi and kghostview are not satisfactory but better
than www.kde.org.

The link for ggv also has this problem but I haven't found any
working link for it.

Finally, the patch:

Bug#346414: tellico: Duplicate Hungarian field names in bibliography

2006-01-07 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tellico
Version: 0.13.3-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I use the Hungarian language in KDE applications.

I start tellico. Then I choose from the file menu a new
bibliography. Then I choose Collection Fields form the Collection
menu.

Now I see two fields with name Cím. When I click on any any field
in the left most column, an error message appears in a new window:

A field with this title already exists. Please enter a different
title.

After changing the name of the first Cím, I can move to other
fields. I have discovered that the first Cím has bibtex property
title while the second one has address.
Actually, cím is the Hungarian equivalent of both title and
address.

I propose to use Cím only for title with a desription like A mű
címe to clarify the meaning of cím. For address, I propose the
name Postacím.

Bug#344051: tex4ht: Invalid XML: element li has no attribute value

2005-12-19 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tex4ht
Version: 20051214-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Tex4ht produces invalid xml on the following file (test.tex):

\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}
\begin{enumerate}
\item\label{item:1} First item.
\item\label{item:2} Second and last item.
\end{enumerate}
\end{document}

I compile it with:

mk4ht xhmlatex test.tex

Then I check the validity of the output:

xmllint --noout --valid test.html

The result is:

test.html:18: element li: validity error : No declaration for
attribute value of element li

^
test.html:22: element li: validity error : No declaration for

For completeness the generated file test.html:

I guess the problem is that the XHTML+MATHML DTD uses the strict
version of XHTML, which disallows the deprecated attribute value.

Bug#343906: rubber: Does not optimize dvi for post processor

2005-12-18 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: rubber
Version: 1.0-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

When rubber intends to post process a dvi file (e.g. with dvips of
dvipdfm) then it should create a dvi file optimized for the post
processor. This means that packages (hyperref, graphicx,
grapphics, color etc.) should use the appropriate driver.

As far as I know, latex does not provide a way to specify the post
processor on the command line, which makes a general solution
impossible. However, most of the packages accept the post processor
as option. So simply making the post processor a global option of
the
document class does the trick in most cases (for packages graphics,
graphicx, color, xcolor, pgf). This can be achieved by

latex
'\let\originaldocumentclass\documentclass\renewcommand{\documentclass}[1][]{\originaldocumentclass[POST,#1]}\input{FILE}'

where we want to latex FILE to obtain a dvi file for post processor
POST.
(The idea is to redefine \documentlcass such that it behaves as if
POST was an option of it. I don't know a simpler way of doing
this, e.g.

latex '\PassOptionsToClass{POST}{CLASS}\input{FILE}'

where CLASS is the document class does not work. This may be
related to bug latex/2542 of the LaTeX bugs database.)

Test file test.tex:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{color}
\usepackage{hyperref}

\begin{document}
\section{Some graphics}
\label{sec:some-graphics}

\textcolor{red}{This is a red text.}
\textcolor{green}{This is greeen.}

\end{document}

File ~/texmf/tex/latex/config/hyperref.cfg:

\ProvidesFile{hyperref.cfg}%
  [2005/06/27 personal hyperref configuration]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Let us compare the following commands. We check the used drivers in
the log file. First we check rubber:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/tmp/rubber$ rubber -o dvips test.tex

compiling test.tex...
compiling test.tex...
running dvips on test.dvi...

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/tmp/rubber$ grep '[Dd]river' test.log

*hyperref using default driver hypertex*
File: hypertex.def 2003/11/30 v6.74m Hyperref driver for HyperTeX
specials

The driver for hyperref is bad, hdvips should have been used.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/tmp/rubber$ rubber --clean -o dvips test.tex
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~/tmp/rubber$ rubber -o dvipdfm test.tex

compiling test.tex...

*hyperref using default driver hypertex*
File: hypertex.def 2003/11/30 v6.74m Hyperref driver for HyperTeX

All three packages use the wrong driver.

Let us check what happens if we use my suggestion for the command
line for latex:

Bug#340076: Acknowledgement (Fails to generate format xmltex)

2005-11-29 Thread Braun Gabor
Sorry, I have sent an incorrect, unchecked patch, please ignore it.

My idea for fix is the same: do not rely on what tex engines are used by latex
and pdflatex.

Here is a correct patch:

--- /root/40xmltex.cnf  2005-04-21 16:42:54.0 +0200

-pdfxmltex  pdftex  language.datpdflatex pdfxmltex.ini
+xmltex latex   language.datlatex xmltex.ini

That is: change the tex engine used to that of the format you build upon.

This supposes that latex is a symlink to the tex engine of the latex format
but you assume this anyway by making xmltex to be a symlink to latex.
Similar remark apply to pdfxmltex and pdflatex.

I think this bug is already reported in bug #338327. Please consider merging
the bugs.

Package: xmltex
Version: 1.9-11
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***

The following message appeared while upgrading xmltex and tetex
packages.
The system was configuring tetex-bin at the time and the new version
of xmltex (1.9-11) was soon unpacked.

The message:

fmtutil-sys: running `tex -ini   -jobname=xmltex -progname=xmltex

---! /var/lib/texmf/web2c/latex.fmt was written by pdfetex

I think the problem is that tetex changed the default tex engine to
pdfetex and the latex format uses this engine and not tex.
(This claim is supported by /etc/texmf/01tetex.cnf)

I suggest to make 40xmltex.cnf more robust: do not make any
assumptions on the tex engines the formats use.
Suggested patch:

Bug#337474: coreutils: ln -s a b .. creates links to wrong files

2005-11-07 Thread Braun Gabor
On Sat, Nov 05, 2005 at 12:10:25PM -0700, Bob Proulx wrote:
 Thanks for the report. But what you are seeing is not a bug.

Thanks for your long explanation. I accept that the behaviour of 'ln -s' is as
desired and I have misunderstood something.

However, I think that the info documentation should explicitly mention what
name
does the created symbolic link refers to.
The improved examples you mentioned suggest this but it would be better
to also state it.

E.g. in the options section one can write something like:

`--symbolic'
  Make symbolic links instead of hard links. The symbolic links refer to
the
  exact name that appeared on the command line as TARGETs. This option
merely
  produces an error message on systems that do not support symbolic
  links.

 This new behavior that you are desiring has been suggested before
 and if someone were motivated to write the code, tests and docs for it
 then I am confident that it would be accepted in the upstream project.

I guess the main difficulty is what name should the link refer to.
I do not see any natural solution.

I am sorry for the trouble I have caused.

Best wishes,

Gabor

Bug#337474: coreutils: ln -s a b .. creates links to wrong files

2005-11-04 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: coreutils
Version: 5.2.1-2
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

The info node ln invocation has this example at the end:

ln -s a b ..  # creates links ../a and ../b pointing to ./a and ./b

I have tried it. The result: ../a pointing to itself and ../b
pointing to itself. Such self-referencing links are totally
useless.

I expected that the result is ../a pointing to a in the
current directory, i.e the directory in which the command was issued.
Similarly for ../b.

My general experience is that

ln -s relative/path/to/target linkname

interprets the path to target relative to the parent directory of
linkname and not relative to the working directory.
In contrast

ln relative/path/to/file linkname

interprets the path relative to the working directory.

This difference is not documented in the info page and I find it
confusing and unexpected.

Best wishes,

Gabor Braun

The idea behind the patch is:
1) I guess that the major problem is that amsart.cls redefines
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] to have 2 mandatory arguments instead of 1.
   Fix: use a new macro instead of [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   (I used [EMAIL PROTECTED])
2) float.sty and amsart.cls formats list of floats differently.
   In particular float.sty seems to depend on [EMAIL PROTECTED] being
   defined. This is why I define [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#330540: dvipng: unexpectedly replaces symbols

2005-09-28 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: dvipng
Version: 1.5-2
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

After compiling the following file with latex and the result with
dvipng, the preview of the dvi file and the png file visibly
differs: in the png file the minus, ellipses and greater than signs
are replaced with totally different symbols. I would expect that
one cannot see any difference between the previews (unless largely
zoomed).

Minimal test file test.tex:

\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}
\usepackage{txfonts}

\begin{document}
\[
b \coloneqq a \geq 1 - 2 - \cdots - n.

\end{document}

I have run this through latex and dvipng as follows:

Replacing \coloneqq with = in test.tex, the output of dvipng is correct.
It is also correct if we keep \coloneqq but write a - before b in
the formula.

Bug#318114: preview-latex-style: Wrong equation numbers with option auctex

2005-07-13 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: preview-latex-style
Version: 0.9.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***

The problem:

When I open the file below in Emacs and generate previews by
pressing 'C-c C-p C-d' then the equation environment disappears and
I see

(0.1)A=B

instead. However, I would expect to see '(1.1)' instead of '(0.1)'
since that is what I see when I run latex on the file and view the
result. Passing also the option 'sections' to preview.sty the
equation number is displayed correctly as '(1.1)'.

The sample file:

\documentclass{amsart}
\usepackage[displaymath,textmath]{preview}

\numberwithin{equation}{section}

\begin{document}

\section[$\pi$ stuff]{A section about $\pi$ stuff}
\label{sec:section}

Some stuff.
\begin{equation}
  \label{eq:1}
  A = B
\end{equation}
\end{document}

I have reported this bug to preview-latex-style instead of
preview-latex because I think the bug is in the prauctex.cfg file
of the former package.

The changed line caused (in the original) all sectioning commands to
be dropped (whithout the 'sections' option) and its arguments (the
title and the short version of the title) to be typesetted.
In this way, the sectioning commands don't increase the appropriate
counter.

The modification puts '{}' after the sectioning commands instead of
dropping them: i.e. they produce an empty heading. The original
arguments (the title and its short version) are typeset as in the
previous case, so we have previews in titles.

(To be more precise: the sectioning commands expand to a
[EMAIL PROTECTED] macro and in fact the behaviour of this macro is
changed.)

Whith the option 'sections', the changed line is always ignored, so
our modification has no effect.

Bug#312524: kfreebsd5-source: suggested by Linux kernel patches

2005-06-08 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: kfreebsd5-source
Version: 5.3-13

I do not have the package installed, I was just browsing the packages with
aptitude. I have found that many kernel-patch-* packages and kernel-package
suggests kernel-source, which is provided by kfreebsd5-source.
I think that since the above packages deal only with Linux kernels, they
mustn't suggest a FreeBSD kernel.

I think the problem is that many packages assume that kernel-source is only
provided by Linux kernel source packages.

Patch:

The aim of the patch is ensuring that \xyunrecatcode is called with @ having
category character and then restoring the category of @. The category code
of @ is temporarily stored in \count255. (There is no particular reason for
choosing \count255. Any temporary storage will do.)

Analysis:

1) preview.sty intentionally changes the category of $ to active with
   the options active and textmath.

2) The xy-pic package sometimes also changes the category code of characters
   and then changes them back. This backward change is done by the
   \xyuncatcode macro which contains _explicitly_ the category codes valid
   when processing the document.

3) The macro \xyreuncatcode configures \xyuncatcode to contain the correct
   codes. It should be called when the category codes are that for the
   document.

4) It follows that if preview.sty changes the category code of $ _after_ xy_pic
   is loaded then it must call \xyreuncatcode to correctly setup \xyuncatcode.

5) However, the problem is then while loading a package LaTeX temporarily
   changes the category code of @. That is why we need to change the category
   of @ before \xyreuncatcode and then restore it for proper operation.

6) There is a further complication: this part of code is in the argument of
   [EMAIL PROTECTED] This means that it is executed immediately (during loading
   the package) if preview.sty is given the option 'active' but not 'delayed'.
   If 'delayed' is also given the code is executed at \begin{document} time
   when the category of @ is other.

7) It follows that to what category we need to restore @ depends on when the
   code is executed. So the patch saves the category code in advance to know
   what to restore.

Kind regards,

 Gabor Braun

Package: tex4ht
Version: 20050402.1817-1

The primitive \middle of eTeX seems to be unsupported for MathML
output.

Files below are enclosed between lines starting with '--'.

Minimal input file:
- test .tex
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

The following command works on this file to obtain xhtml output
with math represented by images:

/usr/share/tex4ht/xhlatex test.tex

However, if I try to obtain xhtml+mathml with the following command:

/usr/share/tex4ht/xhmlatex test.tex

then TeX errors occur during compilattion (all 3 runs), the first
of which is

The log file is at the end of this email.

The following patch seems to solve the problem.
I strongly recommend to check this patch because I am neither an
expert in MathML, nor do I understand the code of mathml.4ht.

The patch is only for the part of mathml.4ht supporting LaTeX,
similar pacth should apply to the part supporting plain TeX.

The idea of the patch:
I more or less copied the support for \bigm and modified it for
\middle. As for MathML output my idea is that \middle should
produce the same as \bigm except that the mathsize attribute is
replaced with stretchy=true. (This is to indicate that the height
of the delimiter after \middle should be adjusted to the formula.)

Bug#307647: tex4ht: unicode used when it is not needed

2005-06-01 Thread Braun Gabor
 tex4ht makes use of unicode letter when this is not needed. This happens when
 the latex code contains the sequence ff or fi and maybe other sequences.
 For
 example, here is a latex code and the html code generated by ht4tex and
 htlatex. Note how
 the sequence fi was translated to #xFB01;

Could you please tell me why you think this is a bug? Please keep the
following in mind.

1. TeX4HT tries as much as possible to be *like* TeX except that it
   outputs hypertext.

2. TeX uses ligatures whenever it encounters ff, fi, fl and so on.

3. It *is* possible for you to define an alternate mechanism to avoid
   ligatures---create your own htf files which skip the ligatures.

It is not me who originally sent the bug but I do agree that TeX4HT shouldn't
put ligatures in its output.

Main argument: ligatures are not appropriate for html and other outputs of
TeX4HT by their nature.

Ligatures were invented for better representing groups of letters on _paper_.
TeX also uses kerning (adjusting spaces between letters) for such purpose,
which TeX4HT omits in its output.

Html document format is not designed to contain excessive formatting
information: formatting decisions (breaking paragraphs into lines, often font
choice) are left to the browser. Kerning and ligatures also fall into this
category, since they are influenced by the choice of font.

TeX4HT also puts ligatures in DocBook output. DocBook is designed for the
structural content of a document, no formatting. Noone puts ligatures in a
DocBook document manually.

As to your 3 points above:
To point 1: Since TeX4HT outputs hypertext, it should differ from TeX
(which is designed for paper output) whenever the different nature of output
justifies it.

To point 2: Just what I have said above: the different kind of output justifies
omitting ligatures for TeX4HT and the use of ligatures by TeX.
If TeX4HT omits kerning but keeps ligatures, this requires further explanation.

Bug#311292: preview-latex-style: Unexpectedly changes catcode of @ with xy-pic and textmath

2005-05-30 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: preview-latex-style
Version: 0.9.1-1
Severity: normal

When the style file preview.sty is used with the options active and
textmath and the xy package is also loaded, the category code of @
unexpectedly changes to letter. This can lead to mysterious
results: e.g. I think that is why I have some wrong previews in
Emacs with preview-latex.

Without the package xy and/or the option textmath the category change does not
occur.

Below is a sample file proba.tex and the log file after latex
proba.tex. The lines starting with '' are not part of the
files.
The \show @ commands writes the category of @ in the log file.
The log file shows that it is changed at \begin{document} time.

I guess that the category change is caused by \xyreuncatcodes in the 121st
line of preview.sty. I don't understand the code but this seems to be the
only space connected with package xy.
Here is a snippet of preview.sty with line numbers:

Bug#306586: hyperref: nests bookmarks incorrectly

2005-04-27 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: tetex-extra
Version: 2.0.2c-7
Severity: normal

I ran pdflatex twice on the input file below. After it I
viewed the pdf file with xpdf. On the let hand side it displayed
three bookmarks. Every bookmark was a child to the preceeding one.

However, the second bookmark shouldn't be a child to the first one.

This error does not occur if I change the option of the babel package
to english instead of magyar or I comment out the line loading
the babel package. Also, I don't have the error if I comment out
the \subsection line.

\usepackage[magyar]{babel}
\usepackage[bookmarksnumbered,bookmarksopen]{hyperref}

Bug#300113: hotplug: Hotplug system does not start.

2005-03-17 Thread Braun Gabor
Package: hotplug
Version: 0.0.20040329-17
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
Tags: patch

At boot time nothing hotplug related appears on the screen, not even
something like Starting hotplug subsystem. When inserting a
pendrive it is unmountable (/dev/sda1 does not exist).
(This is the only thing I use hotplug for.)

The init script /etc/init.d/hotplug seems to have no effect:
when called with no argument it prints a usage message
(as expected), when called
with 'restart' or 'status' it does not print anything and nothing
seems to happen. The pendrive remains unmountable.

I think the problem is that the init script /etc/init.d/hotplug
  (1) runs under sh -e so it exits immediately when a command
  returns non-zero
  (as described in the output of 'sh -c help set');
  (2) uses unset to unset variables which are not known to be set.
  The unset command returns non-zero when applied to a
  read-only or unset variable (see the bash man page).

For example, when the prune command is first called, it immediately
unsets prune_discard and prune_output which were not set before.
Also when invoking the script with argument status the QUIET
variable is unset though it may not be set.

The following patch, which works for me, replaces unset VARIABLE
with unset VARIABLE || true so that unsetting variables which need
not be set does not stop the script unwantedly. This may introduce
problems when prune_output or prune_discard is read-only for some
reason.
