Bug#1064492: libdemeter-perl: Use of wxTB_3DBUTTONS crashes the Artemis GUI

2024-02-22 Thread Carlo Segre
Package: libdemeter-perl
Version: 0.9.27
Severity: grave
Tags: patch upstream
Justification: renders package unusable

when invoking the "dartemis" executable, it fails when trying to use
wxTB_3DBUTTONS from Wx::ToolBar. This is in line 174 of the GDS.pm script.
Removal of wxTB_3DBUTTONS from line 174 allows dartemis to run correctly.

I think there is a more serious problem. The most recent official release
is
0.9.26, not 0.9.27. The fix suggested above reverts to the code in 0.9.26.
Perhaps, 0.9.26 should be the version used in the Debian package.

There is also an error in executing "dhephaestus". It crashes with the
following error:

$ dhephaestus
Can't use an undefined value as an ARRAY reference at
/usr/share/perl5/Demeter/UI/Hephaestus/LineFinder.pm line 46.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/share/perl5/Demeter/UI/Hephaestus.pm
line
298.

As far as I can tell, there is no difference in either Hephaestus.pm or
LineFinder.pm in the two versions so the problem is more subtle. In any
case,
version 0.9.26 runs without errors in trixie with the same version of libwx-
perl.

Bug#939447: nvidia-legacy-check: Supported graphics card (Quadro K1100M) is flagged as unsupported

2019-09-04 Thread Carlo Segre

Package: nvidia-legacy-check
Version: 430.40-2
Severity: normal

The NVidia Quadro K1100M is supported by the current non-free drivers (my card
is working just fine with the drivers on sid) but is not included in the list
of supported GPS. This means that when nvidia-legacy-check is installed, the
warning pops up and predicts dire things if I do not switch to the legacy
package which as far as I know does not support this card.

This problem can be corrected by adding the code "10DE0FF6" to the list of
supported ID numbers in the nvidia-legacy-check.preinst file.

Bug#934662: grace: Font mapping breaks with base35 *.t1 fonts

2019-08-12 Thread Carlo Segre
Package: grace
Version: 1:5.1.25-6
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When the latest ghostscript (9.27~dfsg-3) is installed, it forces the
installation of the fonts-urw-base35 package which contains binary font
files ending in a *.t1 instead of *.pfa or *.pfb. The grace package updates
its font mapping when new fonts are installed using the update-grace-fonts
script and all the fonts available are mapped in the file
/usr/share/grace/fonts/FontDataBase with links to the ascii and binary font
files in the /usr/share/grace/fonts/type1 directory.

When grace is started up, it reads the FontDataBase file and then searches
the /usr/share/grace/fonts/type1 directory for each of the fonts listed
there in one of three forms as per the strace output below

stat("/usr/share/grace/fonts/type1/n019023l", 0x7ffee1e43d70) = -1 ENOENT (No
such file or directory)
stat("/usr/share/grace/fonts/type1/n019023l.pfa", 0x7ffee1e43d70) = -1 ENOENT
(No such file or directory)
stat("/usr/share/grace/fonts/type1/n019023l.pfb", {st_dev=makedev(0x8, 0x1),
... }) = 0

Because the fonts in the fonts-urw-base35 have an extension of *.t1, they
are not recognized and grace does not handle this well at all because it
assigns that font name to the next binary font file with a valid extension.
This results in having only the fonts with binary files which end in no
extension, *.pfa or *.pfb being available but with names all scrambled up
and assigned to the unrecognized fonts.

If the links ending in *.t1 in the /usr/share/grace/fonts/type1/ directory
are renamed as *.pfb, then grace identifies all the fonts correctly and
makes them all available with their proper name designations. This
indicates that the bug is in the source code for grace which should add a
search for a fourth variant of the file name, i.e. with *.t1 as the
extension.

A second fix would be to have grace search only for the specific file name
that is listed in the third column of the FontdataBase file, which has the
correct file names associated with the fonts.

Either of the two above fixes would solve the bug correctly but a kludgy
solution would be to modify the update-grace-fonts script to rename the
links in the /usr/share/grace/fonts/type1/ directory which end in *.t1 as
having no extension of a *.pfb extension. However this is only a stopgap
solution.

add annotations to PDF files.

This is a rewrite of xournal which maintains a decent amount of
backwards compatibility and is currently under active development.
It is mentioned on the xournal homepage itself.

It would be nice to have it in Debian together with xournal (or instead
of xournal, in case the latter will end up being removed because of its
age).

Bug#826069: libghemical5v5: breaks color rendering and atom generation in ghemical

2019-01-04 Thread Carlo Segre

Hello:

I think that I have found the origin of this bug. It is in the
liboglappth2 package. This package has only one reverse dependency, that
is ghemical. The package has remained the same (MD5 sum) since at least
wheezy and something in the compilation dependencies has changed so that
it breaks ghemical. This bug should probably be redirected to the

liboglappth2 package.

All that is needed to close this bug is to recompile the liboglappth
source package.

Thanks for your detailed summary, Ole.

To summarize, I would very much prefer to keep the package linked to
giza, and to fix the problems with giza when they appear in the wild.
But this is my personal opinion; the final decision is up to the package
maintainer (Gregor Herrmann, and the Debian Perl Group).

There's not much I can add. I also was happy that we can move libpgplot-perl
into Debian proper as giza is free software, and as there have been
no bug reports so far, I currently see no reason to revert this
change. Also thanks for your offer to help in fixing problems in case
they arise in the future.

Karl, in case you hit any concrete bugs in our libpgplot-perl linked
against giza, please don't hestitate to file a bug report.

Cheers,
gregor

Dear Maintainer,

I use xournal a lot. Thank you very much for providing this nice program.

I have lost several hours of work, because my computer froze/crached before I
saved my edits.

It would be great if there were an autosave backup functionality that would
automatically
save the edits every five minutes or so to a backup file. Many programs have
this,
e.g. emacs or libreoffice. I think this should be easy to do and might save a
lot of
work for the users.

Best regards,

Josef.

Bug#841252: libtk-filedialog-perl: Control-W is deprecated in $W variable, needs to be changed to $^W with literal ^ character

2016-10-18 Thread Carlo Segre
Package: libtk-filedialog-perl
Version: 1.3-4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When starting the "athena" program (from the horae package), the following
error appears

Unrecognized character \x17; marked by <-- HERE after nSave) = $<-- HERE
near column 22 at /usr/share/perl5/Tk/FileDialog.pm line 610.
at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl5/5.24/Tk/widgets.pm line 14.
Compilation failed in require at

at /usr/bin/athena line 76.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/athena line 82.

It turns out that this is because of code in /usr/share/perl5/Tk/FileDialog.pm
which appears close to line 604:

  PRIVATE METHODS AND SUBROUTINES
sub IsNum {
my($parm) = @_;
my($warnSave) = $^W;
$^W = 0;
my($res) = (($parm + 0) eq $parm);
$^W = $warnSave;
return $res;
}

The character "^W" is actually the single character Control-W instead of the
"^" character followed by "W". This use is deprecated and can be fixed by
replacing the Control-W in the three lines above.

2016-06-01 Thread Carlo Segre
Package: libghemical5v5
Version: 3.0.0-4.1+b2

Justification: renders package unusable

When installed from sid, ghemical will only render in greyscale instead of

In order to get ghemical working again, I have to revert to the wheezy version

Please remove sixpack from Debian unstable to unblock the removal of
python-scientific.

python-scientific is incompatible with numpy 1.9 and hasn't seen any
upstream activity since 2014.

python-scientific is keeping the old netcdf (1:4.1.3-7.2) in unstable
which is causing testing migration problems for every new revising since
the transition in October 2015.

sixpack is unmaintained since 2011.

Bug#799705: xournal: Toolbar buttons have abnormal height

independent of window manager...

Dear Maintainer,

The the toolbar buttons at the top of xournal's interface are out of
proportion. They are way longer vertically than horizontally. The problem
happens under both Gnome and xmonad (ruling out the window manager as the
cause). The problem appeared suddenly, i.e. after closing and opening a new
instance of xournal.

I have tried purging and reinstalling xournal as well as removing the
~/.xournal directory. I cannot get the regular toolbar back. Possibly there
is some GTK related stuff that should be reset, any pointers are welcome.

A screenshot of this behavior is available upon request (I can't just send
it to the mailing list, right?)

Hi,

While working on the "reproducible builds" effort [1], we have noticed
that libxray-spacegroup-perl could not be built reproducibly.

The attached patch removes randomness from the build system by ensuring
that the space_groups.db.PL file is generated deterministally.

Once applied, libxray-spacegroup-perl can be built reproducibly in our
reproducible toolchain.

Bug#668249: tgif is not DFSG-Free

2014-11-22 Thread Carlo Segre

Hi Tomasz,

My mistake, it is the QPL license that was originally used. As I said
before, it was already in the archive when I adopted it. Ilooked on the

https://wiki.debian.org/DFSGLicenses

page and it still lists QPL v1.0 as unsettled. In any case, I suppose I
caould ask Bill Chang whether he would consider changing his license to an
MIT license or something else. It looks like the biggest concern is for
libraries though and this package does not provide any libraries.

Hi again Carlo,

If the license is the one here: http://bourbon.usc.edu/tgif/copyright.html
then the situation is even worse than with QPL:

"[...] and its documentation for *not-for-profit* purpose"
(emphasis is mine).

This is non-free: https://people.debian.org/~bap/dfsg-faq.html#no_commercial
So either:

  1) the license is QPL and in this case the situation
is a bit ambiguous (but maybe it is ok, IANAL),
  2) or the license is "royalty-free" and then tgif is
 obviously non-free

This package provides some shared libraries which it would be nice to have

As noted in #648129 and implied by various lintian warnings, the package
needs an overhaul. Splitting it up into libpgplot5, pgplot5-dev, etc.
would seem a reasonable first step.

I'm having similar issues with fityk (version in Squeeze 0.9.3).

One way of triggering the problem, that I recently discovered, is to
incorrectly load the data (using the command line in the GUI). This
causes fityk to segfault instead of giving the correct error message.
Below is the gdb trace.

On the other hand, the error message does appear when using cfityk,
but this error causes cfityk to quit with this message "Program exited

Any advice on the matter? I have fityk 0.9.8 installed on a debian
testing machine. I will try this in there and see. If it works fine,
could a update to Debian Squeeze be possible? or perhaps an upload to
Debian backports?

Bug#668249: tgif is not DFSG-Free

2012-04-10 Thread Carlo Segre

I beg to differ. There are two different versions of tgif. One is
licensed QPL and the other have a DFSG compatible license. The Debian
package has been built from the non-QPL licensed code and non-DFSG bits
have been removed with the cooperation of the upstream author.

It has been so for more than a decade and therefore will stay in main.

Hello.

Tgif license is "Q Public License" version 1.0 .
This license is not DFSG-Free. (e.g libcwd)

Suggests:

1. Tgif move to non-free.
2. remove Tgif.

Thanks.

I'll look into it.  I am not sure that it is libpng which is the problem,

The package was adopted by me a number of years ago because I needed it but

Bug#656707: xournal: Fonts do not display on Apple Preview

Package: xournal

The PDF files that Xournal produces using 'Export to PDF' do not
display properly under Apple Preview on MacOS: the fonts are not
visible. PDF files produced by printing to a PDF file work fine.
Other PDF viewers seem to work fine, including, eg, Adobe Acrobat on
the Mac.

I've attached a small test xournal file and PDF files produced in the
two different ways.

I note that the cairo rendering library had a very similar bug 4 years
ago. See, eg,
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/cairo-bugs/2007-June/001256.html
Since xournal has its own font subsetting code, perhaps this bug was
inherited from somewhere else.

(The bug is doubtless ultimately in Apple Preview, but it seems worth
working around.)

Workarounds: Use print to pdf rather than the built-in export, or use
a different viewer.

Well -march=native isn't doing any good as it bases the result of the
binary on what hardware is used on the atobuilder host. For your package
build please just stick to the compiler default and don't pas any -march

Yes, this option was added in the latest release, I will revert it for the

Probably you are correct

I'm just curious: why do you prefer an (obviously :)) error-prone

Something like
tempfile=$(mktemp -p /tmp tgif.)

EOT
ucf --debconf-ok $tempfile /etc/default/tgif
ucfr tgif /etc/default/tgif

rm -f /etc/default/tgif

ucf --purge /etc/default/tgif
fi
if which ucfr >/dev/null; then
ucfr --purge tgif /etc/default/tgif

in the postrm purge section should do the trick (both untested!) and
you get all the additional comfort ucf offers about dealing with
user-modified conf-files for free.

Because I was ignorant of ucf... Thanks for the tip. I will work on this

currently include dependencies on texlive-latex-base, netpbm, and
ghostscript which need to be present to have this instantiation and
rendering work correctly. With no ghostscript, there is an error much
like what you report that the generated eps file in /tmp cannot be found,
however, this does not seem to be your error. The ghostscript and netpbm
dependencies were added in version 4.2.2 and I will add the
texlive-latex-base dependency to the 4.2.3 package I am building now.

I am afraid that I will have to close this as I cannot reproduce it. If
you wish to try a backport of version 4.2.2 for squeeze, you can find it
in my personal repository

  http://debian-xray.iit.edu

If you still are noticing the error with the newer version installed,
please let me know before I close this bug.

Bug#628046: more information on librdf0 and LibreOffice

It seems that if libraptor2-0 version 2.0.2-1 is installed, then the

Bug#628171: tgif: instantiation of latex equation using eq4.sym does not work

2011-05-27 Thread Carlo Segre

Hi David:

I will look into this as soon as possible.

Carlo

On Fri, 27 May 2011, David Belohrad wrote:

Package: tgif

I'm running tgif because it allows simple integration of latex equations into
the drawing.
Current release has this feature broken. Steps to reproduce the problem:

- open empty document
- Special/Instantiate/ eq4.sym, and click into the drawing canvas to
instantiate the equation
- doubleclick on the instantiated equation to render it

Instantiation fails with 'Cannot find the 'file_name)); ' message

When looking deeper into the issue, it seems that the instantiated equation has
corrupted attributes, e.g. if one looks on 'exec' attribute of the instantiatied
equation, there are evidently corrupted lines.

When looking however into eq4.sym file, the attributes stored in this file are
in perfect order. It looks hence that the error happens somewhere during copying
of the attributes from eq4.sym into the instance during the instantiation
process. So what
about to verify if this is not a problem of utf to 'something' conversion?

Thank you Jakub. This will have to be pushed upstream so the program

I am not able to reproduce this bug on two very disparate systems running

1. The same problem exists on amd64 as well with both the August kernel
and the one which came through the archive this morning

Linux hydride 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Sep 14 20:16:12 UTC 2010 x86_64

2. The problem is due to the latest xorg intel driver since I just
installed it this morning on the amd64 side of my machine and upon
restarting of X, the corruption, which was not present previously, started
showing itself.

3. I downgraded to xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.9.1-4_amd64.deb on the amd64
side and the corruption problem disappeared. All other packages are the
same and up to the latest version in sid.

By the way, I am running xfce4 4.6.2. I have not tried this with gnome or
kde.

Sorry about answering myself. I see the problem. In the older version it
is likely that the -D_NO_LOCALE_SUPPORT was used or there was no locale
support so that the old files Gunter has contain the decimal points while
files he is writing out now have the comma. The new version of the
program chokes on a decimal point when reading in files. This is serious
and needs to be fixed. I will look into it ASAP.

Bug#595795: tgif: Does not open documents written with version 4.1.x correct

2010-09-06 Thread Carlo Segre

Hi Günter:

On Mon, 6 Sep 2010, Günter Frenz wrote:

Yes, all three are installed. But the error message I just sent to you,
suggests some problems with the fonts. Any idea where I can look for a
solution? Ah, I forgot to attach the second file in my last mail, now it
is...

I think I have found the problem. If you look at the test.obj file
itself, the second line is:

state(0,37,100,000,0,0,0,16,1,9,1,1,0,0,1,0,1,0,'Courier',0,80640,0,0,1,5,0,0,1,1,0,16,0,0,1,1,1,1,1050,1450,1,0,2880,0).

Now the files I have created with version 4.2.2 contain the following
second line:

state(0,37,100.000,0,0,0,16,1,10,1,1,0,0,1,1,1,0,'Courier',0,138240,0,0,1,10,0,0,1,1,0,16,0,0,1,1,1,1,1050,1485,1,0,2880,0).

If I put your line in my file, I have teh same segfault and if I put my
line in your file, it works fine. I looked at the file very carefully and
the problem is in the third entry in parentheses, in your file it is
"100,000" but the correct value should be "100.000". Clearly there is
some problem with the way fixed point numbers are formatted and written
out to the file. The comma instead of the period confuses the issue.

I am not sure why this is happening at write time so i will forward the
message to the upstream author and maybe he can clarify the situation.

I am also putting this back into the bug report thread.

Bug#65117: tgif: does not work with -print -tiffepsi

2010-09-01 Thread Carlo Segre

hello:

I am about to adopt tgif and I would like to know if this bug is still
present in the current version of tgif. Please see below for more

I have not seen this error in 4.1.45 or in 4.2.2 (the new version I am
about to upload).

Unfortunately, tgif fails also when given a display, and apparently in a
more serious way:

I see this dialog in 4.1.45 but the eps file is properly generated.

Bug#340719: tgif: pstoepsi broken

2010-09-01 Thread Carlo Segre

Hello

I am about to adopt tgif and I wanted to know if this bug has been
resolved to your satisfaction. Please see below for more information.

On Fri, 25 Nov 2005, Toni Mueller wrote:

the program pstoepsi is broken in several ways:

- When using the option "-2x", checking for the source
file is done in an incorrect way. The attached patch
 fixes this.

I am not able to reproduce this error even though the pstoepsi script does
not have your patch. Perhpas I am not using the correct options to get
this error. I am simply trying to "print" to epsi and it works fine.

- The program assumes that it can use a program "pbmtoepsi"
has an option "-scale", which the version included with
Debian has not. Thus, scaling breaks.

Again, could you please be more specific as to how you make this fail. I
am not aware of how to invoke the "-scale" option.

- In the branch at line 98, there is a redundant setting of
STYLE, which the patch also fixes, but it doesn't fix
the case that later on, the overwritten value of STYLE
is tested against. If this is simply a piece of dead code,
or if this hides another problem, I didn't investigate.

This has been fixed.

Cheers,

Carlo
