Bug#487225: xserver-xorg-core will not upgrade and breaks existing X
Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 2:1.4.1~git20080517-1 Severity: important Xorg stopped working after a recent dist-upgrade of Lenny (Testing). The problem was that the package xserver-xorg-core would not install. dpkg was unable to create `./usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so'. I found yhat two files in xserver-xorg-core had been diverted by nvidia-glx by using these commands and checking the error messages: , | # aptitude install xserver-xorg-core | | # /usr/sbin/dpkg-divert --list /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so | diversion of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so to | /usr/lib/nvidia/libwfb.so.xserver-xorg-core by nvidia-glx | | # aptitude show nvidia-glx | Unable to find an archive lenny for the package nvidia-glx | Package: nvidia-glx | State: not a real package ` The diverted files were /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so and /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so. I removed them with dpkg-divert --remove and upgraded xserver-xorg-core successfully. My X Window System is restored! nvidia-glx non-free (NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x driver) exists in Sarge and Etch, (NVIDIA binary Xorg driver) in Sid, but not in Lenny. I don't know how whether it has been in Lenny at any stage. My Lenny was originally an upgrade from Etch so perhaps it was remembered it from there? Bug#476672: linux-image-2.6.24-1-686: alsa snd-cs46xx module missing (all linux-image packages)
Package: linux-image-2.6.24-1-686 Version: 2.6.24-5 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** Alsa sound stopped working on my Thinkpad T20 after upgrading from Etch (2.6.18-5-686) to Lenny Testing (2.6.24-1-686). Bug#336974: Debian newbiedoc orphaned package
Newbiedoc itself has received activity on the upstream website (now http://newbiedoc.berlios.de). I have been a member of the NewbieDOC project since 2002. I am currently managing the project and maintaining the website. The newbiedoc Debian package, based on the website content, used to be maintained by Romain Lerallut, but he has been inactive in the NewbieDOC project for some time. I would be interested in taking over newbiedoc now that it has become an orphaned package. I am not a Debian Developer. It may be that Romain would be willing to sponsor me, but I know that his academic studies have been a prority recently. Please let me know if that would be helpful. -- Chris. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#432678: alsa-utils: alsaconf kills OSS applications
Package: alsa-utils Version: 1.0.13-2 Severity: normal Running alsaconf (eg to configure a sound card) causes OSS apps (eg XMMS, Audacity, etc) to stop working in Etch (Stable). The error messages are: Audacity: There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer RealPlayer 10: Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it. XMMS: Couldn't open audio. Please check that: Your sound card is configured properly. You have the correct output plugin selected. No other program is blocking the soundcard. The cause is that alsaconf unloads modules including snd_pcm_oss. This destroys /dev/pcm. When alsaconf reloads the modules, it fails to reload snd_pcm_oss and /dev/pcm is not recreated. The reason for alsaconf's bad behaviour is a combination of its use of the obsolete update-modules command and the existence of the file /etc/modprobe.conf (perhaps left over from an upgrade or created by another application). According to the update-modules man page, the existence of /etc/modprobe.conf will cause /etc/modprobe.d/ to be ignored by Debian packages which store their configuration files there. It also says that no package [should] try to use [update-modules] anymore. Because of this behaviour of update-modules, alsaconf seems to be ignoring a configuration file which tells it to load snd-pcm-oss. The configuration file is probably /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base which contains this line: install snd-pcm /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm { /sbin/modprobe --quiet snd-pcm-oss ; : ; } I moved /etc/modprobe.conf out of the way and everything now works properly. There have been several threads on the Debian-User list recently which suggest that other people are experiencing a similar problem. I don't know whether Testing and Unstable are also affected but, if their version of alsaconf still uses update-modules and /etc/modprobe.conf exists, I think they quite likely will be. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-486 Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages alsa-utils depends on: ii dialog1.0-20060221-3 Displays user-friendly dialog boxe ii libasound21.0.13-2 ALSA library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libncurses5 5.5-5 Shared libraries for terminal hand ii linux-sound-base 1.0.13-5 base package for ALSA and OSS soun ii lsb-base 3.1-23.1 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii module-init-tools 3.3-pre4-2 tools for managing Linux kernel mo ii modutils 2.4.27.0-6 Linux module utilities ii pciutils 1:2.2.4~pre4-1 Linux PCI Utilities ii python2.4.4-2An interactive high-level object-o ii whiptail 0.52.2-10 Displays user-friendly dialog boxe Versions of packages alsa-utils recommends: ii alsa-base 1.0.13-5 ALSA driver configuration files -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: gnomad2 Version: 2.8.8-1.1 Severity: normal When I run gnomad2 from a terminal window as a normal user in group audio, I get these messages in the terminal window $ gnomad2 This is a PDE device Device was not connected. and this error message in an application window Could not open jukebox: usb_set_configuration: Operation not permitted It runs OK as user root or using Sudo. I would not want to do this because of the built-in file selector which allows transfer of files to and from the PC as user root. Not exactly good security! Bug#399051: rt2500-source: rt2500 cannot establish link in later version

In both cases I built the rt2500 module from the rt2500-source package using module assistant. The resulting modules package is the same on each system: rt2500-modules-2.6.17-2-686 version 1.1.0+cvs20060620-3+2.6.17-9 The probelm seems to lie in the file /etc/Wireless/RT2500STA/RT2500STA.dat. I can get the card to work either by modifying /etc/Wireless/RT2500STA/RT2500STA.dat with a text editor (setting AuthMode to OPEN), or by adding these lines to /etc/network/interfaces: Where does this file come from? Could you please send me the output of dpkg -l rt2500 ? Bye, Aurelien Thanks Aurelien. The output of dpkg -l rt2500 is pn rt2500none(no description available) Does this mean that I have installed rt2500 at some stage and then purged it? I don't remember doing so, but it could be so. While the installer is running tasksel, an installation step fails: Configuring gnome-applets An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Select and install software but I think this is just package dependency problems and nothing to do with tasksel. I had a similar error during the original install and could not complete installation of the 'Desktop environment' although I had a functioning commandline after reboot. That is why there was no CD in the drive when I re-ran tasksel manually ie I completed the installation despite the 'Desktop environment' task failure, removed the CD, rebooted, logged in as root at the commandline and ran tasksel. Tasksel hung because there was no CD in the drive. The /etc/apt/sources.list file created during installation still contains a line for the CD source. Aptitude and Synaptic are happy to download and install packages without the d-i netinstall CD in the drive, but tasksel is not. I must manually edit /etc/apt/sources.list in order for tasksel to work. Perhaps other people will get caught out if they try to run tasksel after a netinstall - unless the installer comments out the CD source at the end of installation? Joey Hess wrote: Chris Lale wrote: It is a netinst CD (100-150 MB) I suspect you didn't have the CD in the drive when you were running tasksel standalone. I've identified a case that can make it hang, if apt wants something from the CD and it's not in the drive. Yes, you are right - there was no CD in the drive. I'm unsure how this would happen when the installer is running. It could happen if you managed to eject the CD in the midst of the install, that's all I can think of. The install is in two halves. At the end of the first half you are prompted to remove the CD. The system then reboots from the hard disc. So, the second half of the install proceeds without a CD in the drive. I think this accounts for the problem. There is no message about re-inserting the CD as far as I can remember. I don't recall this happening with previous installers. Why can't the installer just comment out both the CD source lines in /etc/apt/source.list? Surely the CD is no longer needed once the remote mirror is added? -- Chris. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#386244: tasksel 'Desktop environment' task hangs
Package: tasksel Version: 2.53 Severity: normal Selecting 'Desktop environment' (in Etch Testing) causes tasksel to hang. (There is a flashing cursor at the bottom left-hand corner of the console.) If 'Desktop environment' is selected from within the Etch beta-3 Debian-installer, the installation fails. Bug#265030: lyx-qt: Ispell for British English not working in Lyx
Package: lyx-qt Version: 1.4.2-4 Followup-For: Bug #265030 This bug was reported to have been fixed in version 1.4.1, but occurs again in version 1.4.2-4. Attempting to use Ispell from within LyX (eg F7) results in this error: The spellchecker could not be started Can't open /usr/lib/ispell/english.hash /usr/lib/ispell/english.hash does not exist, but /usr/lib/ispell/british.hash does exist. Creating a symlink /usr/lib/ispell/english.hash to /usr/lib/ispell/british.hash solves the problem. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-486 Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages lyx-qt depends on: ii libaiksaurus-1.2-0c2a 1.2.1+dev-0.12-2.1 an English-language thesaurus (dev ii libaspell15 0.60.4-4 GNU Aspell spell-checker runtime l ii libaudio2 1.8-2 The Network Audio System (NAS).
