Bug#637749: h5cc missing from hdf5-tools and libhdf5-dev
Package: hdf5 Version: 1.8.7-2~exp6 Severity: normal The update from exp5 to exp6 left out some files in /usr/bin originally included by hdf5-tools. Among those, h5cc is typically used to compile programs with HDF5 or to detect the HDF5 library in a configuration script. As pointed out in Bug #629157 , this file (and other similar wrappers) might be better suitable for libhdf5-dev package. But, it is currently missing from all the packages built from exp6. Bug#537414: [DebianGIS-dev] Bug#537414: please default to 1.8 interface for hdf5-1.8.x
On 01/-9/-28163 03:59 AM, Francesco P. Lovergine wrote: the compatibility mode is there for a reason: to allow old code being safely used without changes. If your code use the new api should also be able to use the 1.8 api explicitly and not rely upon the 1.8/1.6 choice done by third parties. If not, it needs to be fixed because over-simplified in its approach. The old API will eventually be deprecated and disappear. The compatibility mode allows time for the developers to migrate to the newer API: They could use H5_USE_16_API_DEFAULT to defer the migration. If they don't want to migrate at all, why bother upgrading the hdf5 package? The current approach burdens the adoption of new API and pushs the migration problems to the future. There probably should be libhdf5-*-1.6-dev packages for the people wanting the old API. Or, if it is really desired to have libhdf5-*-dev meant for 1.6, there should at least be libhdf5-*-1.8-dev packages that provide a way to use the 1.8 API by default. Something that definitively breaks compatibility against upstream and causes serious headaches to developers. The right apporach is adding new functions for the new API and retaining the old API for backcompatibility. Exactly the result of the approach adopted. Different sonames and libraries where needed when changing from hdf5-1.6.* to hdf5-1.8.* . There is no need for different sonames or libraries for the same ABI. And, the API do not even need to coexist. Just make the libhdf5-*-1.8-dev conflict with the libhdf5-*-dev packages. This permits the migration work to start now instead of when the old API is deprecated or the ABI for old functions are no longer available.
