Bug#992346: elpa-org: install script from elpa-org package failed

The package elpa-org is upgraded as well, producing the same error. Produces the error as reported. Are you certain elpa-org is upgraded to the version in bullseye? (i.e. 9.4.0+dfsg-1)? I ask because that's not what your original report said, and there is also some confusion above about what the version in stable is. Yes, my apologies! I was in a case where I wanted to upgrade only emacs to get the fix for another bug. And elpa-org was not upgraded in the process. Maybe a dependency constraint should prevent elpa-org in 9.1.14+dfsg-3 with emacs-27. I agree that this will probaly rarely occur. I let you decide if a fix is needed. Feel free to close the bug accordingly. best, Damien
Bug#992346: elpa-org: install script from elpa-org package failed
Hi David, On 19/08/2021 20:31, David Bremner wrote: I did another test in a schroot. Here, the error was triggered by the upgrade of the package 'emacs' from 1:26.1+1-3.2+deb10u2 to 1:27.1+1-3.1, with the package 'elpa-org' already installed. I believe the issue is related to this package and not to the package emacs, since the error only appears if the package 'elpa-org' is installed, or going to be installed. Are you doing an upgrade to bullseye / stable? Because that version of emacs is not in oldstable, which is (roughly) what your bug report said. Yes, the error appeared the first time when upgrading emacs to version 27. There was some possibly related discussion about running emacs 27 in buster on the backports list, you could check there. The error appeared in two situations: 1. emacs 27 (currently in stable/bullseye) is already installed. Install elpa-org (from stable as well, i.e. version 9.1.14+dfsg-3). Produces the error as reported. 2. elpa-org is installed with emacs in old-stable. Upgrade emacs to the version in stable / bullseye. The package elpa-org is upgraded as well, producing the same error. Produces the error as reported. The issue did not occur with previous versions of elpa-org. I found one discussion probably related to this bug report -- https://lists.debian.org/debian-backports/2021/02/msg00016.html IIUC, the issue may be due to the fact that emacs-27 is now packaged with org-mode, which I didn't know. I am not sure if this is the culprit, but it looks like emacs-27 and elpa-org provide possibly conflicting package files: ┌ │ $ dpkg -l elpa-org │ iF elpa-org 9.1.14+dfsg-3 all Keep notes, maintain ToDo lists, and do project planning │ │ $ dpkg -l emacs-common │ ii emacs-common 1:27.1+1-3.1 all GNU Emacs editor's shared, architecture independent infras │ │ $ dpkg -S /usr/share/emacs/27.1/lisp/org/ox-org.elc │ emacs-common: /usr/share/emacs/27.1/lisp/org/ox-org.elc │ │ $ dpkg -S /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/elpa-src/org-9.1.14/ox-org.el │ elpa-org: /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/elpa-src/org-9.1.14/ox-org.el └ best, Damien

As a standard user, this is not the behavior that I would expect from the package manager. I can usually safely mix packages from stable, testing and more thanks to a proper apt pinning configuration, and the package manager tells me if I can upgrade a package e.g. from testing without wrecking havoc my system. But I understand your point of view and the solution chosen. Thank you for your feedback! kind regards,

Bug#678884: (no subject)
hello, I agree that when the user interrupts the backup with ctrl-c, obnam should terminate cleanly; I mean, without leaving locks. However, checkpointing takes a lot of time on slow systems and/or with low network bandwidth (several minutes). I would prefer just interrupting the backup and removing locks before leaving. To minimise the amount of data lost in the case of interrupted backup, it is possible to configure the checkpoints to be done more often. regards, Damien -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hello, Actually, deja-dup could not launch because python2.6 was still installed on my system and set as the default version of python. Removing python2.6 or setting python2.7 as default (update-alternatives) now allows to run correctly deja-dup. Maybe it should be made explicit that deja-dup runs python = 2.7 ? regards, Damien

Bug#675825: obnam: client not found, but cannot remove lock
Package: obnam Version: 1.0-1 Severity: normal Hello, During the initialization of the first backup, the creation of the metadata on the repository side might take a few time; I assume that this happens especially when gpg encryption is used. If the backup is interrupted at this time, it is then no longer possible to remove the lock on the repository. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. create a new backup $ obnam --lock-timeout=3 -r sftp://damien@server/home/damien/ttt backup /data 2. abort the backup before it has started sending some backup data 3. restart the backup - you get a lock timeout 4. cannot force the lock: $ obnam --lock-timeout=3 -r sftp://damien@server/home/damien/ttt backup /data ERROR: Lock timeout This problem is easy to solve by erasing the contents of the directory that will receive the repository files on the server side. Thus it would be possible to do things like : exclude = .* include = .git Note that exclude in Obnam is a Perl-compatible regular expression (full power of the re module's pattern matching language). Your examples don't do what you expect them to do. It's possible to use the look-ahead operators in the regular expression syntax to do what you want, though. Note that rsync's full mechanism for filtering what gets transferred is quite powerful, and also quite complicated. Just for the sake of documenting this issue: My previous example was maybe not clear before. In rsync I can an include file and an exlude file similar to this: = config.exlude # repositories to exclude from backup .local no_backup damien/temp # do not backup local configuration files /home/damien/.* # etc etc. ... config.include # ... do not backup local config files except these ones /home/damien/.bash* /home/damien/.profile* /home/damien/.git* /home/damien/.tikz* /home/damien/.reportbug* # etc etc. ... All this demonstrates that adding a really powerful and versatile mechanism for picking out what is to be backed up is inherently dangerous, and as such will cause people grief when they are setting up their backups. It's better to have people back up a bit too much than to make it easy for them accidentally back up even a little bit too little. Thus I'm not going to implement this. If someone can come up with a clean way of doing it, and provides a good patch, I am willing to include that in Obnam, however. (In that case, please discuss it in the upstream bug tracker or the upstream mailing list, thanks.) I understand your point. At the same time using one-liners of Perl regexes can be quite obfuscating. This is why I would vote for a multi-liner configuration of the include/exclude patterns. I do also assume that there is a limitation for doing this from Python cliapp. Sorry. I don't mean to be negative about all your suggestions. It's OK. And thanks for this tool ! It looks nice and I am strongly considering it as a very good alternative for crypted backups on an external server. regards, Damien

Package: apt Version: 0.7.25.3 Severity: important File: /usr/bin/apt-get Hello, apt-get source reports an error while trying to acquire locks under /var/lib/apt/lists - apt-get is run without root superuser power, - non other apt/aptitude processes are running at the same time, - except for downloading source packages from time to time, I do not use apt (I assume this is the reason why the lock files where not available); I use aptitude for system maintenance and installation of new packages. - the problem was solved by manually creating the required files as a root user.
