Hector's 3rd point still seems not to be addressed in
gcc-4.2-4.2-20070609-1; see:
http://gcc.gnu.org/viewcvs?view=revrevision=108748 (the file has
been moved, the previous suggestion to add it manually is
inappropriate) and debian/rules.d/binary-libstdcxx-cross.mk still uses
the old pathname.

It would be great to have a non-root mode for synaptic, to allow
browsing of the package lists by non-superusers. The CLI alternative
to synaptic, aptitude(8), allows this. Installing/removing would of
