Dear Maintainer,
* What led up to the situation?
Fresh install of Debian 10 (debian-live-10.4.0-amd64-gnome.iso).
Installed gsmartcontrol using the gui "Software" interface.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
Used the dash to find and start gsmartcontrol.
Entered password when prompted for elevated permissions by the gui interface.
* What was the outcome of this action?
Gsmartcontrol does not load.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
Gsmartcontrol loads correctly.
* What extra things did you try?
1) Check user account elevated privelages work:
Installed and verified that gparted runs fine with elevated privileges - so
user account works fine.
2) Ran from cli and received some errors:
:~$ gsmartcontrol-root
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
(gsmartcontrol:4088): Gtk-WARNING **: 19:23:32.852: cannot open display: :0
3) Looked about for some similar problems and found references to privilege
elevation issues with GUI programs requiring root access under Wayland. Wrote a
script which loads gsmartcontrol through an xhost hack:

xhost si:localuser:root
gsmartcontrol-root
xhost -si:localuser:root
Which allows the program to load.
I suspect something is wrong with the polkit config.
