There is no ".wine" directory, so there is no outdated version (or any version)
of the DLL.
I set the base home directory to "/usr/home" so root's $HOME is
"/usr/home/root".

>It's not a great idea to run wine as root.

I thought it was a permission problem so I used the root account. It turns out
that it does not matter.
I used a new account and the problem is the same.

Bug#939748: Regarding Antonio Ospite's suggestion.

2020-05-18 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

I do not think that it can be fixed in a per-font basis.
The problem with fonts is that most people download them from the internet or
(in case of bitmap fonts) make them manually.
I personally use a modified version of the default Fixed font using "gbdfed".
Also, once you convert the font to OTB format, it is impossible to manually
edit (with simple tools like "gbdfed"; tools like FontForge seems to always
mess things up).

Here is the report regarding the spacing problem:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pango/-/issues/471

The original issue in "libpango" on the GNOME GitLab is locked so they refuse
to listen to anything regarding that deprecation.
Seriously, can you just keep that package at 1.42 (or add a "legacy" package)?
It breaks too many use cases.
I can hold that package from upgrading, but eventually, some packages may
require the new version (just like "chromium" and GTK2).

Forward slashes work in the previous version, but not on this one.

That kernel has dropped to the experimental repo a few hours ago, so I
installed it, regenerated the initrd, and copied them to the ESP, and added an
entry for it.
When booting the kernel, the screen blinked for a moment and booted the next
entry, which basically means that the EFI stub in the new kernel does not work.
The previous version, 5.6.0-1, still boots fine.
The motherboard is an ASRock B450M Pro4 on the latest firmware if that matters.
Linux is the only OS installed and Safe Boot is disabled.
I cannot provide any log files since the UEFI itself does not provide any.

The problem with the OTB format is that there are spacing issues. Also if you
do so, the same font would appear twice.
A possible solution is to keep the old version of Pango (libpango-legacy) in
another package, and provide an alternative in dependencies (Depends:

Since they do not use EXT, there is no reason to install relevant utilities.

My suggestion:
1. Do not make "e2fsprogs" a required package;
2. Move the following files to new packages, since they are not limited to EXT:
"/usr/bin/lsattr"

Bug#945256: Do not make `gcc` depend on one paticular version.

2019-11-21 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: gcc
Version: 4:9.2.1-3.1

It seems that the GCC-related packages (`cpp`, `g++`, etc.) have hard
dependencies to one particular version of said programs, so when a new version
of GCC is released and a package depends on `gcc` or `cpp`, I have to install
multiple versions of GCC or CPP.

I think that a better idea is to:
1. Make GCC-related packages virtual packages, and make various versions of
`gcc` like `gcc-8` and `gcc-9` provide the `gcc` package name.
2. Use the debian-alternatives system for the GCC-related binaries, so if a
program only needs to use a compiler, it would use the latest version (or
user-specifies version with `update-alternatives`), and if a program needs a
particular version, it would directly use `gcc-8` or `gcc-9`.

Bug#944224: Keep "dmesg" logging after boot.

2019-11-06 Thread Gong S.

Package: initscripts

Currently, the "bootlogd" script only records the "dmesg" messages during boot,
and exits afterwards.
However, most system issues happen after boot.
So when such issue happens, nothing is logged, so it is hard to find the cause.
I think that it is wise to keep `dmesg` running after booting.
To be precise, change line 35 of "/etc/init.d/bootlogs"
from "dmesg -s 524288 > /var/log/dmesg"
to "nohup dmesg -Hwx > /var/log/dmesg".

It is sad to see this. It is the same reason that I refuse to use GTK3.

I hope that you can contact upstream to preserve bitmaps. Or at least compile a
separate package with bitmap support.
The problem is that most TrueType fonts are rendered poorly unless you have a
high-DPI/"retina" display, which most people do not have.
Also, remember that embedded devices usually have low-resolution screens (like
128*128 or 64*64).
If you enable antialiasing you get blurry texts. If you disable antialiasing
you get out-of-shape texts.
Bitmap fonts have no such problems because they are pixel-perfect and does not
require antialiasing if a fixed font size is specified (which in most cases is).
Last but not least, bitmap fonts are easy to edit, unlike TrueType fonts.
Also, not everyone uses a DE like GNOME. I (and many people) use WMs like i3
and TWM because they use fewer resources and has fewer distractions.
If I use a minimal WM and I use the terminal all day long, obviously I want the
UI font to be the same as the terminal font.

Bug#939748: Newest version breaks rendering of bitmap fonts in GTK applications.

2019-09-08 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: pango1.0
Version: 1.44.6-1
Severity: important

The newest version in the experimental repo, 1.44.6-1, breaks the displaying of
XLFD bitmap fonts in GTK applications.
If you set the UI font to a bitmap font (Fixed) in /etc/gtk2/gtkrc, all
characters are replaced by empty glyphs.
I do not have GTK3 installed (since I dislike the direction GTK is taking), but
it should affect GTK3 as well.
Downgrading the packages "libpangoft2-1.0-0", "libpangocairo-1.0-0" and
"libpango-1.0-0" from 1.44.6-1 to 1.42.6-7 fixes the problem.
See attached screenshots for the issue.

PS: Before you say "nobody is using bitmap fonts", you should consider that not
everybody has a high-definition screen or want to see blurry text.

Bug#929754: Restoration failures due to PID increment rates.

2019-05-30 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: criu
Version: 3.11-2
Severity: important

How to reproduce:
1. Dump a process with many threads.
2. Reboot.
3. When trying to restore, it fails with "Pid $PID do not match expected $PID".

The problem is that many thing in the OS creates new processes frequently and
take up the PID desired.
They create new processes every few seconds, and they are too important (or
simply impossible) to kill.
For example, "systemd-udevd" now frequently ends and spawns child processes
after an update.
BTRFS also frequently creates kernel threads.
Even worse, CRIU now set the starting point of new PIDs to the restored
process' PID,
so no matter how many times you try, it will always fail because the next few
PIDs are quickly taken.

Sorry for this reply. I am on mobile because my workstation is under repair.

It looks like that the problem happens in the Windows version of Chrome (and
Chromium) as well.
When I use a classic theme (in Windows 7, this means screen composition is
disabled), the same problem occurs.
So it means that with the new layout, Chromium now expects a compositor. This
is a very bad trend.
Not everyone use a DE, and you should not force everyone to use one.

Bug#925951: "zsnes" does not support symlinks.

2019-03-28 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: zsnes
Version: 1.510+bz2-8+b3

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start ZSNES and save settings.
2. It creates a "$HOME/.zsnes/" folder for the configuration.
3. Symlink that folder to elsewhere, e. g. "$HOME/.config/zsnes/" (the folder
is already created).
4. Start ZSNES again and found that the settings are not applied.
5. Change settings and save them again. This time it directly put them in
"$HOME/".

Not related, but I hope you to follow XDG and move your config in a sane folder
like "$HOME/.config/zsnes/".

You should not require yet another hidden file in the user's home directory.
My home directory is already messy enough. I clearly do not want it to be even
more messier.

Can you support a global configuration file in "/etc/mkshrc"? Just like "bash".
The Android version of "mksh" already does this at "/system/etc/mkshrc".
This simplifies configuration.
("/etc/profiles" does not count as it only applies to login shells)

Here are the files that need to change.
Firstly, the post-install script.
If "ifupdown" is configured, use it instead.
Secondly, the config file.
Many networks are IPv4-only, especially college networks.
So you should still use "clientid".

Bug#925128: "dhcpcd" launches multiple times at startup.

2019-03-19 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: dhcpcd5
Version: 7.1.0-1

I am using SysV init and "ifupdown" to configure my workstation.
"network-manager" is not installed because I refuse to lick Lennart's "D".
"isc-dhcp-client" is not installed, so "dhcpcd" is the only thing that handles
DHCP.
During startup, the network has already configured in "/etc/init.d/networking",
using "ifupdown".
Since the interface is already configured, "/etc/init.d/dhcpcd" will launch
"dhcpcd" a second time which fails the sanity test, causing the service to fail.
My suggestion is that if "dhcpcd" is already running, "service dhcpcd start"
should do nothing and "service dhcpcd stop" should kill all instances of
"dhcpcd".

Bug#924901: Chromium ignores SIGTERM even when respective settings are turned off.

Even with "Continue running background apps when Chromium is closed" option
turned off in settings,
Chromium still runs in the background when I close all tabs, close the entire
window, or choose "Exit" in the menu.
As seen on the attached screenshot.
Even worse, the residual process does not accept SIGTERM, thus wasting cycles
and RAM. SIGKILL still works, though.
Maybe this (mis-)feature is good for some users, but if you offer an option
there and I turned it off, it should respect that.

Bug#923640: "ifupdown" 0.8.35 breaks DHCP and DNS resolving.

2019-03-03 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.8.35
Severity: important

Since I upgraded "ifupdown" from 0.8.34 to 0.8.35, I cannot get an IP address
from DHCP at boot.
Also, despite that I can still use "dhclient eth0" to get an IP, every domain
fails to resolve.
(I can still "ping" an address to get an IP, but anything else ("apt update",
web browsing etc) will not work).
The network in question is IPv4-only requires me to access a login page.
However, if I booted up System Rescue CD, login and "chroot", there is still no
resolving inside chroot despite that the host has no problem.
I am not using a network manager because of Poetterware. I am using
"sysvinit-core" and "sysv-rc".
I have read the changelog and I believe the DHCP problem is caused by the
suggestion in #906894. No idea about the resolving problem.

The problem is that do we really need "logsave"? It is a binary program.
I think that you can store the "fsck" logs in "/dev/kmsg" so the output\
is stored in the "dmesg" logs. It is a system event, after all.

Bug#917272: Kernel module failed to load on 4.19 kernel.

2018-12-25 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: firmware-amd-graphics
Version: 20180825+dfsg-1

For some reason, from 4.19.0 onward, the kernel refuses to load the AMD
modules. The screen defaults to 80*25 text mode and "startx" does not work.
Here is what I have tried:
linux-image-4.19.0-trunk-amd64-unsigned/now 4.19.5-1~exp1 amd64: WORKS
linux-image-4.19.0-1-amd64-unsigned/unstable 4.19.12-1 amd64: DOES NOT WORK
linux-image-4.20.0-trunk-amd64-unsigned/experimental 4.20-1~exp1 amd64: DOES
NOT WORK ("dmesg" log attached)
It does not look like the kernel itself is the problem (as 4.19-trunk works but
4.19 does not), so the problem is the firmware.

"/mnt" and "/media" are for manual mounts (by using "pmount $DEVICE", "\
udisksctl mount -b $DEVICE" or using GUI buttons to do the same thing) \
with USB disks, NTFS volumes from Windows and such. System volumes are \
mounted through "/etc/fstab".

>some other filesystems, mounted under /run, that should be ignored in \
`umountfs'?
None except "/run/shm" and "/run/lock". Most other programs do not use \
mount points under "/run". There are still some programs doing this, li\
ke "fstransform".
I think that there is another solution: Checking whether there are bloc\
k devices mounting in "/run". If it is a "tmpfs", it is safe to ignore;\
if it is a block device, it is not safe to do so.

Bug#917139: Do not ignore unmounting of "/run/mount" and "/run/media" in "/etc/init.d/umountfs"

2018-12-22 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: initscripts
Version: 2.93-1

In "/etc/init.d/umountfs" line 28, everything under "/run/*" is not unmounted
when shutting down or rebooting the system, and this includes "/run/mount" and
"/run/media".
Also it is not uncommon to symlink "/media" and "/mnt" to said locations as it
does not leave automatically created folders after a reboot.
So if you mount disks as a normal user using "pmount" or "udisks", they are not
unmounted, resulting in data loss.
I suggest you that you should only ignore "/run/lock" and "/run/shm" (if exist,
as specified in "/etc/default/tmpfs").

>Is this true even if you reboot?
The problem does not happen at boot. It happens randomly after you have 4-5
days of uptime, especially with long, CPU-heavy processes already running (like
ZPAQ compression).
I still do not know the exact cause, but it happens only with new processes, as
soon as it starts. Existing processes are not affected.
>What if you force an fsck check on the file system?
I have not tested it, but I do not want to take the risk of checking a running
system.
I reformatted the FS without that feature, and it does not seem to happen after
a week. Maybe the problem is within the EXTFS driver?

4.19.0-trunk-amd64. I guess that I am not getting any semblance of support with
an experimental kernel.
However, when I upgrade from 4.19.0-rc7 to 4.19.0-trunk, the problem is still
there, so it does not look like a kernel problem.
>How/when did you enable this feature?
Just me poking around options in the man page. I assume that I can save some
space with small files.
>It looks like you were trying to upgrade some packages when you ran into this

It happened to random processes. It happened to "mandb", "perl" and "chromium"
most frequently. Sometimes it happens to very basic processes like "ls" or "rm"
(happened once when I try to remove Chromium's cache folder).
Also, if a process is stuck, the processes will be stuck again if I invoke that
program again.

Bug#912824: [Pkg-alsa-devel] Bug#912824: Distorted sound with some headphones.

2018-11-04 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

No, the connection is not loose.
It looks like that this issue only happens on "Apple" earphones (as well as the
"Apple mode" on some earphones). There is a button on the earphone, and if I
hold down the button, there is no problem playing. But I cannot hold it forever.
The distortion problem is Linux-exclusive. I do not know the course. All music
files have this problem but not very noticable. It becomes noticable with
speech. Holding the button solves the problem.
The "wrong channel" problem exists in Windows too, but not in devices such as
an Android phone or a Nintendo 3DS. Again, holding the button down solves the
problem.
Maybe it is related to this:
https://mashtips.com/apple-headphone-on-android-or-windows/
Apple has its own implementation of TRRS and I guess the button disables the
mic and other "special features".
So it is a hardware problem after all. But I hope you to provide some sort of
software workaround.

No, I am not talking about clipping. The problem happens regardless of volume.
If I run "speaker-test -c2", both speakers have sound output at the same time
(which should not happen).
The "constantly swapping" does not always happen-it happens at random, and only
on some of my audio files. I do not know what caused it.
Some observations when I adjust the volume in "alsamixer" and run "speaker-test
-c2" (it seems that the swapping problem does not happen):
L=0, R>0: Both have constant sound on "Front Left", Both have no sound on
"Front Right". (No, this is not a typo)
L>0, R=0: Both have no sound on "Front Left", Both have constant sound on
"Front Right".
L>0, R>0, L>R: Both have constant weak sound on "Front Left", Both have
constant strong sound on "Front Right".

2018-11-03 Thread Gong S.

Package: alsa-utils
Version: 1.1.7-1

With some headphones and earphones, the sound output is distorted, e.g. the
left and right channels are swapping constantly, this issue is especially
serious with human speech.
I used a Sony MDR-AS800AP earphone directly inserted to the sound card's audio
output, the sound is distorted. However, if I hold the button on the earphone
the output is normal but at a higher volume.
I can confirm that the earphone and the sound card have no problem because it
plays normally on an Android smartphone or on dual-booted Windows. The problem
is certainly in ALSA.
I also tested with other earphones, some of them have similar problems. Some
earphones have an "Android/Apple" switch, and the distortion happens when the
switch is set to "Apple".
I am using ALSA directly without PulseAudio or other Poetterware.
The configuration can be found in the attachment.

Using "glamor" instead of "EXA" works. However, the manpage says "EXA (for
pre-TAHITI GPUs) and glamor (for R300 or higher)". TURKS GPUs are pre-TAHITI
ones.
I cannot test the patch for you. I have said, I am no developer, and I do not
want to mess up my OS by recompiling an important package.

Bug#910846: X server "Segmentation fault at address 0x0" when using about:support in Firefox-based browsers.

2018-10-11 Thread Gong S.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Version: 1:18.1.0-1

I am using a standalone AMD HD 7670. "firmware-amd-graphics" is installed and
loaded during boot.
It seems that whenever I tries to query information about hardware
acceleration, X segfaults.
"dmesg" does not show any error or warning after segfault.
Sometimes other programs or games trigger it as well, with the same problem
described in the file Xorg.0.log.

Firstly, the UID field only use 4 digits, while in UNIX UIDs can be 0-65535. If
I have a UID greater than the list gets misaligned like which shown in the
screenshot. You should reserve 5 digits for that field.
Secondly, you should use the old format for IO rates (Disk R/W), like other
fields (just a number, no "B/s").

Bug#903692: `fsck.fat` assumes that the FS is aligned.

2018-07-13 Thread Gong S.
Package: dosfstools
Version: 4.1-2

Firstly create an FAT FS with alignment. Obviously 62 sectors are wasted:

root:/u/h/root> mkfs.fat -D 0x00 -f 1 -F 32 -h 0 -I -m /dev/null -M 0xF0 -n
TEST -R 2 -s 64 -vv /dev/sdg
mkfs.fat 4.1 (2017-01-24)
attribute "partition" not found
Boot jump code is eb 58
Using 2 reserved sectors
Trying with 64 sectors/cluster:
FAT12: #clu=967090, fatlen=2880, maxclu=4080, limit=4080
FAT12: too much clusters
FAT16: #clu=967075, fatlen=3840, maxclu=65520, limit=65520
FAT16: too much clusters
FAT16: would be misdetected as FAT12
FAT32: #clu=967016, fatlen=7616, maxclu=974848, limit=268435440
Using sector 6 as backup boot sector (0 = none)
/dev/sdg has 64 heads and 32 sectors per track,
hidden sectors 0x;
logical sector size is 512,
using 0xf0 media descriptor, with 61896704 sectors;
drive number 0x00;
filesystem has 1 32-bit FAT and 64 sectors per cluster.
FAT size is 7616 sectors, and provides 967016 clusters.
There are 64 reserved sectors.
Volume ID is fce1837e, volume label TEST .

Then check it. There is no problem:

root:/u/h/root> fsck.fat -vV /dev/sdg
fsck.fat 4.1 (2017-01-24)
Checking we can access the last sector of the filesystem
Boot sector contents:
System ID "mkfs.fat"
Media byte 0xf0 (5.25" or 3.5" HD floppy)
   512 bytes per logical sector
 32768 bytes per cluster
64 reserved sectors
First FAT starts at byte 32768 (sector 64)
 1 FATs, 32 bit entries
   3899392 bytes per FAT (= 7616 sectors)
Root directory start at cluster 2 (arbitrary size)
Data area starts at byte 3932160 (sector 7680)

Now create the FAT FS without alignment (-a option):

root:/u/h/root> mkfs.fat -a -D 0x00 -f 1 -F 32 -h 0 -I -m /dev/null -M 0xF0 -n
TEST -R 2 -s 64 -vv /dev/sdg

Checking the newly-created filesystem:

root:/u/h/root> fsck.fat -vV /dev/sdg
fsck.fat 4.1 (2017-01-24)
Checking we can access the last sector of the filesystem
FSINFO sector has bad magic number(s):

Now check the FS again. The same error occurs no matter how many times I

Bug#902741: Use `p7zip` for archive operations, if possible.

2018-06-30 Thread Gong S.
Package: mc
Version: 3:4.8.21-1

Currently, `mc` uses standalone utilities like `unzip` to process ZIP files.
However, the package `p7zip` and `p7zip-full` is capable to process such
formats as well.
You can see which format `p7zip` can handle using `7za i`, and for
`p7zip-full`, `7z i`.
So, here is my suggestion:
1. Drop the `unzip` recommendation and `arj`, `bzip2`, `genisoimage`, `zip`
suggestions;
2. Add `p7zip` or `p7zip-full` to suggestions;
3. Use `7za` and `7z` instead of standalone utilities like `unzip` in
`/etc/mc/mc.ext`.
