As I mentioned in the upstream report, it's been working nicely for me
on Sid against Plasma 5.8.4, for the past few days.
Just submitted a report for the new issue as bug #836264.

Unlike on 4.6 versions, on Plasma 5.7.4 it's not possible to remove tray
widgets as long as widgets are locked. Attempting to remove them this way will
not have an effect until plasmashell is somehow restarted.

plasmashell is restarted (see also https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=365618
upstream).

I also found after the update from KF 5.23 to 5.25 that embedded widgets in the
system tray (Networks, Printers, etc.) lose their icons and cease to work, but
only if the panel is initially locked in the configuration when
I also encountered this issue when opening any document that uses syntax
highlighting following today's KF5 updates in testing. Upgrading kate and
kate5-data from 15.08.1-1 to 15.08.2-1 from sid seems to have fixed it for me.

to set the music to the short silence.ogg seemed to have an important effect
on my test program, and so did the size of the compiled code (due to
optimizations I reckon).
