Actually, on second thoughts, I prefer -e, since if /etc/ntp.conf has no
read permission, I'd prefer to have it print an error than to continue
silently (But it's maintainers' decision of course).

I had this problem too; it actually caused my ppp0 interface to fail to
start on boot (although that is most likely specific to my local settings!).
Anyway, It's easy to solve, with a minor edit to /etc/default/ntpdate
and I've included a patch to do
