Maybe we should tell start-stop-daemon to wait 'forever' until the process is really dead before we restart it? According to start-stop-daemon(8), the options should be: start-stop-daemon --stop --signal $SIGNAL --quiet --pidfile $PIDFILE --retry=TERM/10/KILL/forever I just had this bug

The problem with the build error is due to the fact that some of the mutex defines were removed in 2.6.24. You can find patches for this by just googling for DEFINE_MUTEX_LOCKED lirc_dev.c. One of those patches is here:
