FWIW, it looks like the only other package which uses this hook mechanism is arpwatch. For reference, here is the hook script: https://salsa.debian.org/pkg-security-team/arpwatch/-/blob/debian/master/debian/ieee-data-update/arpwatch

This is not really "clean" (as you erase package-owned data), but > it would work. Thanks, Vincent. I can confirm that your suggestion works (for now, of course). I can also confirm that running update-ieee-data "broke" it, and re-running ieee.py "fixed" it again, as expected. Further, I can confirm that a hook /var/lib/ieee-data/update.d/99-dummy is executed with "/var/lib/ieee-data/" and {"oui.txt", "iab.txt", "oui.cvs", "iab.cvs"}. Those last two appear to be a typo (s/cvs/csv/). Seems like its own bug to be reported. Although, it's not clear exactly what the point is of invoking the hooks multiple times, for different filenames. Are you suggesting that python3-netaddr would need its own directory somewhere under /var for the updated index files? (Because /usr shouldn't change, and /var/lib/ieee-data isn't controlled by python3-netaddr)
Bug#1015210: OUI lookups incorrect
Package: python3-netaddr Version: 0.7.19-5 OUI lookups are returning incorrect / corrupt results. Take for example OUI F4-6D-04. The data in ieee-data is correct: F4-6D-04 (hex)ASUSTek COMPUTER INC. F46D04 (base 16)ASUSTek COMPUTER INC. 15,Li-Te Rd.,Peitou, Taipei112 TW But using the OUI object I get completely incorrect / corrupt results: >>> oui = OUI('F4-6D-04') >>> oui OUI('F4-6D-04') >>> oui.registration() {'address': [')\t\tCisco Systems, Inc', '80 West Tasman Drive', 'San Jose CA 94568', 'US'], 'idx': 16018692, 'offset': 821392, 'org': 'eero inc.', 'oui': 'F4-6D-04', 'size': 141} I suspect that the reason is because this debian package replaces netaddr/eui/oui.txt with a symlink to /var/lib/ieee-data/oui.txt but **does not** update the corresponding oui.idx. Thus, the indices are stale. This Debian package likely needs to re-generate the indices before shipping. See issue originally reported upstream: https://github.com/netaddr/netaddr/issues/249
Bug#967972: cifs-utils: fails to mount filesystem when keyutils is not installed
Some sources incorrectly indicate that keyutils is only needed with DFS, but keyutils is also needed when using CIFS w/ Kerberos authentication. When trying to mount a CIFS share using kerberos (sec=krb5), the kernel invokes /sbin/request-key to request a key from userspace. Then cifs.upcall (from cifs-utils) is executed to handle the SPNEGO authentication. If keyutils is not installed, then /sbin/request-key is absent, and the kernel is completely silent about this. [ +0.497021] CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -2 [ +0.000992] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -2 Thus, I strongly agree with the proposal for cifs-utils to *Recommend* keyutils, rather than merely *Suggesting* it.
Bug#930373: Shotwell: double clicking on the image viewer freezes an image of the picture. Reboot required
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/shotwell/-/issues/26 This issue is reproducible for me on two different systems. It's extremely disruptive when it happens, because my system is unusable until I reboot. Is there any chance we can get a bugfix released? Also, isn't this indicative of an issue in Wayland or GDM? It seems like when a client (process) exits, anything it displayed should be gone.

I'm not sure why we have things in /usr/lib/ssl/misc/, which doesn't sound like a useful place to put things. Note that there are actually manpages for them, so maybe we should move them to /usr/bin/? We should probaby get rid of the whole /usr/lib/ssl/ But I think we shouldn't change anything for stretch, except maybe changing from perl to perl-base.

Every system comes with perl-base. The full perl package add a many megabytes of libraries which is a problem for space-constrained systems. Subject: Re: [Pkg-openssl-devel] Bug#860254: The openssl package ships perl scripts. Bug#860254:

hi mattia, umh? So, I read a bit the manpage, this was enough. IMHO, you gave up way too early, and I really much don't like it. well, thanks for your patience. i did think that i had possibly figured out the correct way to do it, but i wasn't sure. it can be hard to tell if you've done something correctly or not. the fact that i can't "undo" mistakes with git makes me reluctant too. but now you've got me started, i am learning how to work with git-dpm. hopefully my contributions in the future will compensate you for your time and frustration in this instance. as per your feedback, i have - added a patch to enable the bindnow hardening - fixed all the lintian warnings - amended the copyright period to be 2013-2014 and i believe it is ready for the next round of review. with thanks jonathon

Bug#823478: python3-protobuf3
hi, so the advice i received regarding the name was that i must get it renamed upstream[1]. i don't think this will be possible because: - upstream is an established package, present in PYPI and macports - the developer is MIA (additionally, the official Protocol Buffers 3 supports Python 3 [2] and should be coming to debian soon[3]. as the main point of this package was to allow the use of protocol buffers with Python 3, this reduces the need for this package). hence, i propose to withdraw the package, the RFS and the ITP. also happy to proceed, the work is basically done, but i can't see a way to make it work. with thanks jonathon [1] https://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2016/05/msg00462.html [2] https://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2016/05/msg00491.html [3] https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=795841

umh, you force pushed everything, master, upstream and pristine-tar branches. WHY? what did you do? oh, sorry, i never intended for you to look at that repo, assuming you'd look at the debian-mentors one. And still it doesn't build, if that was meant to fix it. Without thinking of it I already overwrote the older files, so I can't diff anymore :S yeah, i've got it building on debian now, but i'm waiting for confirmation of what it should be called before pushing. i've asked on d-mentors. sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience. jonathon

hi matt, thanks for the review, and sorry for the embarrassing "does not build" situation. i was packaging on ubuntu, and my experience has been that if it works there, it will work on debian - but apparently not, i'll be more careful in future. i'm actually writing to ask your advice about the name of the package. upstream is called protobuf3, but it's an implementation of protocol buffers 2 for python 3 i'm concerned that by calling it python3-protobuf3 people will think: a) it is the "official" google protocol buffers b) it is for protocol buffers version 3 ¿what do you think about calling the package python3-pr0ger-protobuf3 after the developer's nick: https://github.com/Pr0Ger/protobuf3 with thanks jonathon

Bug#792466: nginx-extras: auth_pam fails to require authentication
I owe you guys an apology. Turns out that Apple Safari, when a basic auth password is saved in the keychain, doesn't even prompt you to send your saved password; it just sends it automatically. So I didn't see an authentication prompt because safari was silently authenticating on my behalf. :/ Your advice to check auth.log was spot on, and I don't know how I missed it before. (It was pretty late, so I'll blame it on lack of sleep.) Seeing that successful authentication was happening behind-the-scenes led me to track down where the invisible authentication credentials were coming from. $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure krb5-kdc [interactive configuration prompts] debconf: warning: possible database corruption. Will attempt to repair by adding back missing question krb5-kdc/debconf. So reconfiguring krb5-kdc would have and did fix it. I wonder if my diet-upgrade broke at some point and I didn't notice? As I recall, I was following this guide: https://www.linode.com/docs/security/upgrading/upgrade-to-debian-8-jessie And my upgrade failed first during this install: sudo apt-get install apt dpkg aptitude I *think* that I first had krb5-admin-server break during *that* install; but maybe I'm misremembering, and I lost an ssh session or something. I also *thought* that I had done this: dpkg-reconfigure debconf for pkg in $(dpkg-query --show | awk '{print $1}'); do echo ; echo -- $pkg ; echo ; dpkg-reconfigure --frontend=noninteractive --priority=critical $pkg /dev/null ; done but thinking about it more now, there's no way I c/p'd that command into my terminal without parsing it thoroughly, and it doesn't seem familiar to me now. ~jonathon On Wed, May 13, 2015 at 11:36 AM, Benjamin Kaduk ka...@mit.edu wrote: On Wed, 13 May 2015, Jonathon Anderson wrote: Maybe I should have done debconf reconfigure on krb5-kdc? Bug#606994: DMA error with b43 on HP Mini 1115NR under Debian Testing (Squeeze)
Package: linux-image-2.6-686 Version: 2.6.32+28 I am experiencing what I believe to be a bug in the b43 driver characterized by the following excerpt from my kernel ring buffer: b43-pci-bridge :01:00.0: PCI INT A - GSI 16 (level, low) - IRQ 16 b43-pci-bridge :01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64 b43-phy0: Broadcom 4312 WLAN found (core revision 15) Registered led device: b43-phy0::tx Registered led device: b43-phy0::rx Registered led device: b43-phy0::radio b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 478.104 (2008-07-01 00:50:23) b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 478.104 (2008-07-01 00:50:23) b43-phy0 ERROR: Fatal DMA error: 0x0800, 0x, 0x, 0x, 0x, 0x b43-phy0 ERROR: This device does not support DMA on your system. It will now be switched to PIO. b43-phy0: Controller RESET (DMA error) ... b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 478.104 (2008-07-01 00:50:23) b43-phy0: Controller restarted Once this error occurs, the only way to regain correct operation is to power-cycle the device: rebooting the kernel is not sufficient. This behavior manifests itself repeatably after short use, and seems to be invoked by the transition of the hardware between low- and high-power modes. (I can prevent the behavior by continually playing a locally-stored mp3 in the background. I expect that this keeps my CPU throttled up, and prevents the system overall from transitioning to a low-power state.) I am running Debian Testing (Squeeze). I first noticed this error under Linux 2.6.32, installed by default. I installed 2.6.36 from Experimental thinking that the bug had been fixed in 2.6.34, but the behavior persists. (The preceding log was generated by 2.6.36. 2.6.32 generated largely similar logs, except that it recommended PIO mode, rather than purporting to switch to it.) Bug#586124: gnome-shell: Missing requirements in 2.31.2-3
Package: gnome-shell Version: 2.31.2-1 Severity: important After installing gnome-shell from experimental (2.31.2-3), it would not start. It complained about a missing clutter symbol. So I manually installed a newer clutter from experimental (1.2.8-1), and tried again. This time it complained about a missing meta_somethign symbol. So I went back and manually installed the version of mutter from experimental (2.31.2-3). After doing that, things worked. Note that installing gnome-shell did pull in gir1.0-mutter-2.31, but it didn't pull in the newer mutter itself. Bug#585921: evolution: Evolution unusable after upgrading to 2.30 due to reliable segfaults
Package: evolution Version: 2.30.1.2-3 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable After upgrading to evolution 2.30.x, I have been completely unable to use it as my mail client. It starts up, and begins fetching and sync-ing my mail. After finishing the sync, it *always* segfaults. I filed a bug upstream (with backtrace) and the maintainer said that the trace looked to him like an ABI mismatch issue (possibly due to debian packaging?). Bug#580520: libwebkit-dev: webkit devhelp documentation does not include signals/properties
Package: libwebkit-dev Version: 1.2.0-1 Severity: normal The generated devhelp documentation for webkitgtk does not include documentation of the signals and properties for some reason. Bug#579261: cairomm: Version 1.8.0 contains accidental ABI breakage and a new upstream release is available
Package: cairomm Severity: important Debian currently packages version 1.8.0 of cairomm. This version is heavily outdated and contains an accidental ABI breakage. The latest stable release 1.8.4 was made in October 2009. Due to the revamped build system based on mm-common, the 1.8.4 release of cairomm fixes quite a number of problems related to packaging and system integration Apart from that, the current libcairomm-1.0-dev development package in Debian is unusable because it ships with an utterly broken cairommconfig.h file which redefines macros such as PACKAGE_NAME or VERSION. This, too, was fixed in cairomm 1.8.4. Please update the package to version 1.8.4 as soon as possible. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-3-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#575355: ITA: conquest -- a real-time, multi-player space warfare game (curses client)
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I Jonathon Hill intend to adopt this packge. Upstream Website: http://www.radscan.com/conquest.html The package description is: Conquest is a predecessor of netrek. . The object of the game is twofold. The short-range goal is to accumulate kills by shooting down enemy players. You get one kill point for each enemy ship shot down, plus some extra if the enemy had kills too. The major weapon used to shoot down ships is the photon torpedo. . The long-range goal is to conquer the universe for your team by taking every planet. You take planets by killing off the enemy's armies via bombardment, and then beaming your team's armies down. When all the planets have been taken, the game ends, a new game begins, and the player who actually took the last planet gets his/her name up in lights. Licensed under the Artist License.
