case the solution was to remove the following
files/directories:
~/.nautilus
~/.gconf/%gconf-tree.xml
~/.gconf/apps/panel

The additional symptoms of the hang were devkit-disks-daemon and dbus-daemon
taking ~20% each of cpu:
root 14298 4.0 0.1 5048 2864
.
Thus it would perhaps be good to add a --oknodo switch to the start-stop-daemon
line in the
/etc/init.d/gkrellmd stop
part of the script.
Best regards,

Hi again!

Justin Pryzby was still right and I was wrong. I tried again, and it needs to be
LC_ALL=C as Justin said.
Sorry for multiple e-mails. This should be the last version of the patch from my
part.

export LC_ALL=C
to the beginning of the file /sbin/MAKEDEV and thus force all error messages be
in English.
I would vote for the first option as it has the least impact while fixing the
problem. The LC_COLLATE=C option is tested and works as expected in sh.

Actually it should be there only for the locale dependent invocations, thus only
for the sed invocation on line 117 in /sbin/MAKEDEV.
But, having looked at the script closer, it looks like LC_COLLATE=C
should be additionally set globally as there are cases (for the case clause
starting on line 32
be called under the C locale. Relevant patch to
/sbin/MAKEDEV is attached.

The following expression is contained in /sbin/MAKEDEV:
sed -e 's/[^A-Za-z0-9_]/_/g'
It is called by several postinstall scripts.
It fails in calling the function re_compile_pattern
The problem did not reoccur in 2.3.6-6, thus the bug can be considered closed.
