Bug#947957: O: hexxagon -- Hexagonal Ataxx clone

2020-01-02 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This GTK game is still fun to play and Popcon suggests it is even in use.

Lintian warnings on it mainly because I did not update it in ages. There
is a new upstream, and my guess is the new upstream fixes exactly the
same bugs as the diff in this Debian package did. Upstream is also
virtually dead, so if anyone picks this up, it will take minimal effort
to maintain.

Bug#947623: O: lgrind -- A LaTeX pretty printer for various programming languages

2019-12-28 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

This program should be mostly obsolete by now – listings.sty is a much
better alternative these days.

Popcon counts 36 installations and it’s non-free (note that I’m upstream
myself and cannot do anything about it). Perhaps it should be removed
from Debian altogether. However, it still builds fine (albeit with 12
Lintian warnings).

Bug#947496: RM: kimwitu++ -- ROM

2019-12-27 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

I was thinking about orphaning the package, but decided to request
removal instead. kimwitu++ and kimwitu++-doc have become obsolete, and
need not be packaged for the following reasons:

* The package is rarely used; popularity contest shows 5 installations

* It can be easily built from source by an interested party ...

* ... particularly since it is a compiler tool and all users will have
all dependencies installed anyway.

PS: Sorry for not even knowing this – do I need another ticket for
kimwitu++-doc? It is built from the same source.

Package: dvipdfmx

Take the following minimal LaTeX program:
%%
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}

\includegraphics{CeeJay_Classes.eps}
\end{document}
%%

Then:
$ xelatex minimal.tex
[...]
- -dname= must be followed by a valid token

Output file removed.
[...]

No output is generated. Somewhere, there is a bug. I am, however, not
sure where. It could well be in package texlive-xetex or in ghostscript
(which is used for conversion, isn’t it?), the text ‘-dname=’ hints to
an incorrect ghostscript call.

I have another, almost identical Debian system (just not updated for a
few weeks) where the whole thing works. Only dvipdfmx had a major update
in the meantime, therefore I suspect the problem in this package.

Bug#491090: kimwitu++: missing build dep

Martin Koeppe schrieb:
Attached you find the log from sbuild. Maybe you see the problem
immediately from that. I don't have more details currently, as the
unpacked source has already been deleted automatically.

The log looks very innocent to me, up to the point were bison is called.
It should not, however, since the bison results in the distribution are
newer than the bison source.

One thing that can possibly go wrong is the preservation of attributes
in the »cp -p« call. Assuming that it does not work, the copy order
makes the source newer than the product. That should be fixable by
swapping lines 199 and 200 with 201 and 202 in the Makefile.

I cannot check that, of course... From my side, there is no hurry.

 Mike

Bug#491090: kimwitu++: missing build dep

2008-07-24 Thread Michael Piefel

kimwitu++ should build-dep on bison, as it uses it during build.

No, it doesn’t normally. Apart from src/kimwy.y, Kimwitu++ comes with
src/Gen.boot/kimwy.{cc,h,output}, all of which are 5 minutes younger
than their source. Bison is not called if you did not touch anything.

I not only proved it, I actually tried it.

Please have a close look on the environment that you used and that
caused the build process to call Bison. If you can reproduce it, I want
to find a way to fix it (without the build-dep).

If the abovementioned behaviour is indeed caused by a failure in

that it is another matter entirely, in which case a new report should be

Bug#421079: Koma-Script: komafont sectioning messed up (disposition)

Bug#399086: pound: Backend selection is OK

2007-03-29 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: pound
Followup-For: Bug #399086

I’m sorry to disagree. When tot_pri is the sum of all priorities of a
given service and pri a random number in the resulting range, then the
algorithm will choose a backend exactly with the given priority.
Backends listed first will not be chosen more often: The algorithm does
not search until one backend is good enough, but searches for the
backend that corresponds to the random number.

If indeed you observe that the backends are not chosen properly, it is
not due to this function. Please provide some statistics.

Bug#416263: RFA: file -- Determines file type using magic numbers

2007-03-26 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the file package. file is of priority standard
and comes with a library and thus the following additional packages are
generated from the source: libmagic-dev, libmagic1 and python-magic.
I believe the package to be in pretty good shape, even if the bug count
suggests otherwise; most bugs are requests for the addition of new
entries in the magic database and are not that urgent.

The package description is:
File tests each argument in an attempt to classify it. There are three
sets of tests, performed in this order: filesystem tests, magic number
tests, and language tests. The first test that succeeds causes the
 file type to be printed.
 .
Starting with version 4, the file command is not much more than a wrapper
 around the magic library.

Bug#414875: ftp.debian.org: remove user-de

2007-03-14 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Please remove user-de. The package contains a little config shell script
that is not used directly by any package (possibly sourced by some
users, though) and a bit of largely outdated documentation.

Selecting locales now works effortlessly, thus the package is not needed
anymore. Popcon reports 285 installs, but I doubt anyone knows that they
have the package installed.

Though I admit it is a bug, and admit it is a policy violation, I am
loathe to trigger rebuilds and archive updates on a dozen architectures
that will have zero effect since the dependencies are missing only on
the architecture independent documentation package, which I already
build on my own machine.

Of course anybody can NMU if they wish. I am going to fix this on the
next upload of a new upstream version or fixing a user-visible bug.

Looks like I somehow ended up with a stale file there. Installing 4.17-5
or 4.19-1 leaves it intact. Shouldn't dpkg prompt me about the modified
 conffile? Colour me confused.

Well, dpkg will complain about a _modified_ conffile when the version in
the package changed and the version on disk is not the same as the old
version (IOW, contains local changes). However, /etc/magic contains the
same 110 bytes for a number of years now (it’s empty with a comment).

Your /etc/magic is quite large, much larger even than the ‘official’
magic database provided in the package. I’m afraid I cannot tell which
entries trigger the warnings.

‘No response,’ well, I might have responded had I known that I was being

something to the report and expect me to react within a month. Am I
supposed to monitor each of the bugs I submit? Ever heard of CC?

Enough whining, to the facts. Indeed, using the cursor keys reveals
everything. Thus, dselect doesn’t simply cut and no information is lost.

It remains a usability bug, however. dselect inserts a line break at an
arbitrary point, forcing the user to scroll left and right and put the
pieces together. Look at the original report: Which ‘*clients’ does
gtktilink depend on?

I’d say dselect should either break the line at the edge of the screen
or not at all.

Again, an update. This new version does not contain ground-shaking new
items. It incorporates corrections from Jens Seidel and some suggestions
from Holger Wansing’s #394726, as well as a probable fix for #318082. I
will merge those bugs to this so they get closed when the time comes.

Bug#389737: lcdf-typetools: Missing dependency for otftotfm: pltotf not found

2006-09-27 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: lcdf-typetools
Version: 2.44-1
Severity: normal

Now, with teTeX removed and TeXlive on my system, otftotfm stopped
working:
sh: pltotf: command not found
otftotfm: pltotf execution failed

Frankly, I think otftotfm is the most important part of lcdf-typetools,
so a higher severity might be appropriate; unfortunately, it is not
easily solved.

pltotf is part of tetex-bin (and ptex-bin), which of course collides
with TeXlive. IOW: the dependency cannot be satisfied with TeXlive.

Nevertheless, without tetex-bin lcdf-typetools lacks important
funcionality, there should at least be a Recommends.

Considering the fact that PHP4 broke badly when the file format changed,
it seems necessary to be able to install many versions of the magic
database side-by-side to cater for all eventualities. I believe,
however, that the proper way to access the database is through the
library interface provided exactly for this purpose. Therefore, an
upgrade path is not needed.

Bug#295209: Why not package new upstream ?

2006-06-07 Thread Michael Piefel
Is it because swi-prolog needs to be
installed to be able to compile the packages ?

Yes. Parts of swi-prolog are written in Prolog itself. That is not too
surprising, it is just a set of standard libraries. Unfortunately,
upstream just made one large package. During the make process, it
installs the base system in order to compile the libraries, which are
then installed.

In Debian, the build must be finished completely before installation. So
either the standard libraries become compiled during installation on the
users machine, or the Debian build process uses the
half-installed-into-a-temporary-directory version of swi-prolog to
compile the libraries, which is a major pain as a lot of paths and other
variables have to be set.

I seriously doubt it. File just looks at the first few bytes (few being

Bug#361076: libfreetype6: Too much kerning

2006-04-06 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: libfreetype6
Version: 2.1.10-3
Severity: normal

Recently, though I cannot say exactly when, at least a few days, at most
a few weeks, kerning with some fonts is too strong. I have prepared a
screenshot using Calibri. This is from a GTK menu, so I assume it really
is a freetype issue. Note that a ‘T’ and a following letter are very
close, but still acceptable, while the capital letters are too close or
even touch.

Other fonts exhibiting this behaviour are Minion Pro and Myriad Pro, but
neither Cambria nor Chaparral Pro, so it is neither a ‘Pro’ problem nor
a problem with OpenType fonts in general (all of the above-mentioned are
OpenType, some of PostScript flavour, some of TrueType flavour).

2006-04-06 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: libfreetype6
Version: 2.1.10-3
Severity: minor

Freetype seems to use all the ligatures it can find. This seems like a
good idea, but wrong use of ligatures is worse than none at all.

There are some places where ligatures are not allowed, such as at the
boundaries of words in compounds: ‘Auflage’ (sorry, German example, in
English ‘Edition’) is a compound of ‘auf’ and ‘Lage’, and fl is wrong
here.

Similarly, freetype even uses the st-ligature in some fonts, such as
freeserif. While this is not wrong in most cases, it looks rather funny
for most readers. Discretionary ligatures should be left to special
occasions.

Am Mittwoch, den 15.03.2006, 20:57 +0100 schrieb Gregor Zattler:
My local magic search path contains at least two *.mime
files. Thus at least the error message is misleading.

It doesn’t :-) Not in the way you think, at least. See below.

  0 pit:/tmp/file$ file -m ~/.mutt/.magic:/etc/magic:/usr/share/file/magic
 -bi ms-word-file.doc
  application/x-archive
  [...]
  0 pit:/tmp/file$ file -m
 ~/.magic:~/.mutt/.magic:/etc/magic:/usr/share/file/magic -bi ms-word-file.doc
  application/msword

[...] The only difference to the above command
lines is the prepended ~/.magic: [...]

Yes, but this difference has consequences. Just try both of these lines
with an ‘echo’ in front of them: The tilde is not expanded by file, but
by the shell, and only when it is the first element.

I think file should work without error when providing a
*search* path with at least ine existing *.mime file.

The only *.mime file in one of the examples above was empty. Indeed file
then issues an error message that is misleading, though one could argue
that an empty file is not a ‘magic file’ at all.

It would be nice if file would identify MS Word files as
 application/ms-word.

I agree, but that is an entirely different problem. Note that the
default magic.mime already has 13 entries for Word, but these files
simply don’t have a proper magic.

Bye,
   Mike

This bug can be closed. I would have done so, but I suppose the

Bug#342529: tetex-bin: xdvi unnecessarily noisy

2005-12-08 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: tetex-bin
Version: 3.0-10.1
Severity: minor

xdvi, startet from a terminal, gives a number of warning messages which
are mostly unnecessary, such as
xdvi: First page of DVI file
  or
xdvi: Last page of DVI file
  or
xdvi: Horizontal scrolling not possible

Additionally, it beeps for every such message. To me, this is a nuisance
without added benefit.

Bug#339608: openoffice.org-impress: Fonts wrong in presentation mode

2005-11-17 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: openoffice.org-impress
Version: 2.0.0-2
Severity: normal

I consider this bug important, but it is such an incredible bug that I
just cannot imagine anyone besides me has it without screaming, so I set
the severity to normal to reflect my distrust in myself.

Impress shows different fonts in presentation mode and in windowed mode.
Windowed mode is just fine, but starting the presentation leads to
numerous changes:
* font attributes (italics, bold) are lost
* outline attribute is not lost, but looks silly
* symbols from special fonts are set in standard font instead
  (this makes bullets disappear)

I have included screen shots to demonstrate the first two problems. The
font used here in Bitstream Vera Sans, that is a system-wide font
installed by Debian means, not some obscure font from my home directory.

Bug#336019: tetex-base: Install fails for update-language

Odd. /etc/texmf/language.d/00tex.cnf is part of tex-common, which is

Yes, true. I have to add that the bug has disappeared now. Perhaps you
might want to tag it user-error but leave it open as a bad example to
others. What happened?

1. A bug somewhere in my TeX installation (which I am going to file a
separate report about) made me try to start fresh. I purged tetex-base
(and all the other packages depending on it in endless dselect
dependency resolution screens).
2. The directory /etc/texmf was still populated. I decided that tetex
had left cruft behind and removed it.
3. I tried to install tetex-base again.

That was when the problem appeared. The mistake, of course, was step 2.
Solution was another purging, this time I included tex-common, of which
I had just learnt (because update-languages is in it), followed by
another install.

It appears that the purging of tetex should at some point have at least
hinted at the existence of tex-common.

However, none of the files disappear. Looks like a ucf problem, in fact.

Bug#324477: workrave: Many messages appear untranslated

2005-08-22 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: workrave
Version: 1.8.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: l10n

Many messages in this version appear untranslated. The only messages
that are localized are the standard Gnome messages (which is a sign that
some l10n initialization is running). The catalogues are complete.

The rest break text is OK as well (it’s not done via gettext).

Bug#323957: dpkg: [INTL] Long messages make translation hard in case of changes

2005-08-19 Thread Michael Piefel
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.13.11
Severity: normal
Tags: l10n

Once again, I see that src/main.c:58 has been marked as fuzzy. Why?
Perhaps a spelling mistake was corrected, and the translation remains
unaffected; perhaps an option radically changed its meaning. To know, I
have to either compare the new message to the old or compare the whole
message to its translations.

Both are difficult for long messages. Please consider splitting the very
long messages, that’s mainly the usage text.

Of course, the one-screen messages in dselect/helpmsgs.cc shouldn’t be
split, as it is important to keep them to screen-size.

Bug#290656: Unable to comply

2005-08-15 Thread Michael Piefel
libgnomeuimm-2.6-dev depends on libgnomeuimm-2.6-1,
libgnomeuimm-2.6-1 depends on libgsigc++-2.0-0, which is not available
anymore, since it has been replaced by libsigc++-2.0-0c2. In other
words, libgnomeuimm-2.6-1c1 (or such) is missing.
