Thanks.

It seems that the desktop file
/home/erlehmann/.local/share/applications//userapp-conkeror-B4SJ9W.desktop
contains a line "Exec=conkeror $(readlink -m %f)". I don't think that's
supported by the desktop file spec.

Bug#815808: /usr/bin/xdg-open: xdg-open on local HTML file provides wrong arguments to browser

Hi Nils,

Dear Maintainer,

I tried opening a local HTML file with xdg-open.

I passed the absolute path with “xdg-open /usr/share/doc/dc/dc.html”

Afterwards, xdg-open started /usr/bin/conkeror and opened the file.

However, it also opened a buffer with.
It also opened another buffer with.
Both are non-existing URLs I did not want to open.

xdg-open invokes /usr/bin/conkeror with the following command line:
“/usr/bin/conkeror $(readlink -m %f) /usr/share/doc/dc/dc.html”.

On a cursory glance, I have been unable to find a reason for that.

Could you please run

  sh -x /usr/bin/xdg-open /usr/share/doc/dc/dc.html

and send me the output?

OK, thanks.

This is the same bug as #776419. Google Chrome has multiple Exec lines
in its desktop file and xdg-open reads and merges them all. The bug has
been fixed in unstable and stretch.

One way of solving it is to install xdg-utils from stretch manually. It
should probably work under jessie.

Bug#804670: /etc/init.d/rpcbind restart is racy

2015-11-10 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: rpcbind
Version: 0.2.1-6+deb8u1
Severity: important

Hi,

Running "service rpcbind restart" sometimes causes rpcbind to exit and
not start again. There seems to be a race condition in the init script:

Nov 09 13:40:39 admin systemd[1]: Stopping LSB: RPC portmapper replacement...
Nov 09 13:40:39 admin rpcbind[508]: rpcbind terminating on signal. Restart with
"rpcbind -w"
Nov 09 13:40:39 admin rpcbind[53361]: Stopping rpcbind daemon
Nov 09 13:40:39 admin systemd[1]: Starting LSB: RPC portmapper replacement...
Nov 09 13:40:39 admin rpcbind[53372]: Already running: rcpbind.
Nov 09 13:40:39 admin systemd[1]: Started LSB: RPC portmapper replacement.

The stop action doesn't wait until the rpcbind process has exited, so
rpcbind might still be running when the start action is executed.

Some other init scripts pass --retry to start-stop-daemon to wait for
the daemon to exit. I think that would solve this issue.

Comments/Problems:

The installation process went well, but the system did not boot. I was
dropped to a "grub rescue>" prompt. I think the reason was that I
accidentally picked the wrong alternative when installing the boot
loader, so it was never installed to MBR. The prompt was probably from
the boot loader of the old installation.

I booted from the USB drive again in rescue mode and installed
GRUB. After that, I could boot the kernel but then systemd complained
about /etc/mtab not being a symlink to /proc/self/mounts and refused
to boot the system.

After booting into rescue mode once more and symlinking /etc/mtab to
/proc/self/mounts, the system would finally boot.

One issue is that you don't have gvfs-bin installed. Try installing it
and I'm sure xdg-open will work again. The Cinnamon packages really
should depend on it, like GNOME and MATE do.

The reason that it stopped working in the new version is (I think) that
I changed xdg-open to not try gnome-open when running under Cinnamon, as
gnome-open is obsolete and GNOME 2 only. Perhaps that was a mistake.

Still, the fallback generic mode should have worked. Apparently there is
no fallback code for the GNOME/Cinnamon mode in xdg-mime. I'll have to
fix that.

When running under GNOME, xdg-open simply calls gvfs-open to open the
file. gvfs-open, in turn, reads the desktop file for Totem
(/usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Totem.desktop) which specifies that
the command to be run is "totem %U".

So, if you want this changed, the change should be done in the totem
package. Reassigning.

The reference for these kinds of things are the freedesktop.org
specifications. I should add references to them in the manual page. Here
they are anyway:

Default applications and associations:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/mime-apps-spec/mime-apps-spec-latest.html

Base directories:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-latest.html

Actually, the correct file is mimeapps.list. Recent versions of
Iceweasel should populate ~/.config/mimeapps.list if you press the "Make
default" button. Due to a bug in xdg-utils it does not actually check
~/.config/mimeapps.list, but it will in my next upload.

I'm not sure. The user might have configured the default choice in other
ways. For example, he/she might have clicked "Make default" in Iceweasel
or used "xdg-mime default". In these cases, running x-www-browser would
be confusing.

Since version 1.1.0~rc3+git20150919-1 xdg-open will use what you specify
in your $BROWSER environment variable if you set it (and if running in
generic mode). So if you set BROWSER=x-www-browser then you should get
your preferred browser.

Ah, OK. That explains why it selected KDE. I was confused about that.

I guess I could remove the check "xprop -root" checks, these are not
needed anymore with current desktop environments in Debian (I think!) so
they serve no purpose other than to confuse.

Bug#799568: [PATCH] xdg-open: prefer BROWSER to xdg .desktop files

2015-09-20 Thread Per Olofsson
Hi Jeff,

Den 2015-09-20 kl. 16:02, skrev Jeff King:
> The patch for my suggested behavior actually turns out to be quite
> trivial. Here's what I came up with:

Thank you for your patch. Unfortunately it is not quite that trivial.
The problem is that xdg-open sets $BROWSER to a default value if it is
not set. So users who had not set $BROWSER themselves would get
xdg-open's default value, instead of xdg-open trying to use the

Well, the entire xdg-utils feels a bit hacky to me :-)

Anyway, I took the opportunity to improve the $BROWSER launching code
and moving the defaults-setting to its proper place. I'm also working on
a test suite for xdg-utils so I added a test case for this particular
problem, so I can catch it if it happens again.

Bug#772179: Xmonad with Gnome

2015-08-29 Thread Per Olofsson
Hi,

Here's how I got Xmonad to work with Gnome in unstable:

1. Create a file /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-flashback-xmonad.desktop
   containing:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=GNOME Flashback (Xmonad)
Comment=This session logs you into GNOME Flashback with Xmonad
Exec=gnome-flashback-xmonad
TryExec=gnome-session
Icon=
Type=Application
DesktopNames=GNOME-Flashback;GNOME;

2. Create an executable /usr/local/bin/gnome-flashback-xmonad containing:

#! /bin/sh
exec gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback-xmonad
--disable-acceleration-check $@

3. Create a file
   /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-flashback-xmonad.session
   containing:

[GNOME Session]
Name=GNOME Flashback (Xmonad)
RequiredComponents=gnome-flashback-init;gnome-flashback;gnome-panel;xmonad;gnome-settings-daemon;

I can make a patch if you want.

Note that you also need to apply a fix to bug #780463 or the session will
hang waiting for Xmonad to signal that it started.

Hi,

The XMonad.Config.Gnome module uses dbus-send to talk to
gnome-session, which speeds up the start when using Xmonad as the
window manager under Gnome. However, there is a syntax error in the
command line which worked previously but now doesn't. It's easy to

No, it is not enough. Depends only ensures that the packages are

If this is not the case, then we would need to add the breaks/replaces

Yes. You need something like

There are a lot of features in lyx which require different

shouldn't be a dependency.

I suppose it could be a Recommends though, then it would be installed

popular it is.

At the very least, the error message should mention that ci is

Bug#717660: seems like a bug in kadmind

This was an intentional change upstream in the development branch that
leads to Heimdal 1.6 (which is what's currently packaged). get-keys is
surprisingly powerful and a lot of people weren't realizing just how much
power all granted, including the ability to impersonate, silently, any
principal whose entry one could retrieve. The idea is that one has to
grant explicit permission to download the existing keys, since that's the
most powerful operation kadmind supports.

OK, I see your point.

I still think it's clearly a bug that kadmin silently creates an invalid
keytab instead of returning an error message. It's really difficult as a
user to understand what's happening. It took almost a day for me and I
had to read the source code to find the problem.

Since the current package is of a development snapshot, the documentation
may not have caught up with the implementation fully.

Which makes me wonder... why are the Heimdal packages in Debian stable
from a development snapshot?

I guess an updated man page wouldn't have helped much in this case
anyway, as opposed to an error message. Still, I think this example from
kadmind(8) is a bit misleading:

This acl file will grant Joe all rights, and allow Mallory to view and
add host principals, as well as extract host principal keys (e.g.,
into

 keytabs).

   joe/ad...@example.com all
   mallory/ad...@example.com add,get-keys host/*@EXAMPLE.COM

It says that Joe gets all rights, which is not true. Even if the
branch is still in development, I think this error should be fixed
before the release :-)

Bug#717660: seems like a bug in kadmind

2013-11-09 Thread Per Olofsson

retitle 717660 kadmind: extracted keytab invalid
reassign 717660 heimdal-kdc
found 717660 1.6~git20120403+dfsg1-2
thanks

Hi,

I can confirm this bug as well and I've done some further experiments.
It seems that there is a problem with the kadmind in wheezy.

I'm running wheezy on both the KDC and the server. When I extract a new
keytab, I can't log in with ssh anymore. Running sshd in debug mode
(with -d), I get a GSS failure: Wrong principal in request. However,
if I extract the keytab on the KDC with kadmin -l and copy it to the
server (as suggested in this bug report), then it works.

It does not seem to be an MIT/Heimdal incompatibility either. With the
extracted keytab, I get:

# kinit -k host/pxe.dsv.su.se
kinit: Password incorrect

while it works with keytab copied from the KDC.

Note that I get the same problem when running kadmin from squeeze
against the kadmind from wheezy. Therefore, I suspect that the bug is in
the kadmind in wheezy.

I also noted that the keytab extracted from kadmind is 191 bytes while
the keytab extracted using kadmin -l is 251 bytes. Perhaps it is
truncated somewhere?

OK, I found the problem.

It seems that there is a new right in wheezy's kadmind called get-keys
which is necessary to extract keytabs. However:

* I already had all rights in /etc/heimdal-kdc/kadmind.acl.
Apparently, the all right does not include the get-keys right. I
changed to all,get-keys and now extracting keytabs works again.

* There is no error message in kadmin when trying to extract a keytab
without having the get-keys right. It just extracts principals but no
keys to the keytab.

* The documentation is ambiguous. The kadmind(8) man page mentions the
get-keys right, but does not say whether all includes it or not. The
example at the bottom seems to imply that all really includes all rights.

So something is wrong here. In my opinion, all rights should include

Bug#717660: all rights does not include get-keys in kadmind.acl

2013-11-09 Thread Per Olofsson

Hi,

When we upgraded our KDC to Debian wheezy, newly extracted keytabs did
not work anymore. After some digging around, I found the error: I did
not have the get-keys right so kadmind did not return any keys when I
extracted keytabs. However:

* kadmin did not return an error message, it simply extracted an
unusable keytab with principals but no keys.

* I had the all right in kadmind.acl, but apparently it does not
include the get-keys right.

* The manual page for kadmind says nothing about it.

I think the all right in kadmind.acl should include the get-keys
right. Otherwise, there should be an error message in kadmin and it
should be documented that all does not include get-keys.

This was also reported as a Debian bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=717660

Thanks in advance!

Bug#648155: Will this patch be applied?

2013-11-04 Thread Per Olofsson
Hi,

The current behavior of kerberized NFS makes life difficult for us
where I work. Here's what happens:

1. User logs in with SSH, gets Kerberos ticket to access her home
directory (through pam_krb5 or GSSAPI delegated credentials).

2. User logs out, but the ticket is not removed from /tmp for some
reason. Or maybe the user just leaves the terminal window open and
   never logs out.

3. Ticket expires.

4. User tries to log in again with SSH.

5. sshd impersonates user and tries to read files in
   her home directory, like ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.

6. sshd hangs because the kernel is waiting for the expired ticket to
   be renewed.

The old behaviour used to be:

6a. sshd gets EACCES trying to open the file and gives
up. Authentication continues, user gets a ticket, etc.

We can't disable public key authentication either, because we need it
for a backup script. Besides, there might be more code trying to read
files in the user's home directory before the user has a ticket.

The patch appears to solve the issue, although it is not ideal to have
to add an option to gssd. At least it's much better than having to
patch it.

It seems that upstream doesn't want to apply the patch. But what to
do, then? Clearly something is wrong here, although I can't say whose
fault it is. The old behaviour worked much better.

Any suggestions?

The problem seems to be /etc/init.d/denyhosts: it doesn't check if
denyhosts has been removed before trying to start it. (It does check
if $DAEMON is executable, but $DAEMON is set to /usr/bin/python).

Bug#689858: gnome indirectly conflicts with icedove

2013-07-08 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.4+7
Followup-For: Bug #689858

Hi,

The fact that the gnome metapackage in wheezy depends on
xul-ext-adblock-plus means that it indirectly conflicts with icedove,
since the version of xul-ext-adblock-plus in wheezy conflicts with the
security-updated icedove.

There is already a bug filed against xul-ext-adblock-plus
(#715222). However, it's not clear when it will be updated, and this
problem might happen again (when the icedove ESR switches version).

Please consider dropping xul-ext-* from Depends, or at least move them
to Recommends or Suggests.

While I understand we'll have to do this some day, I fear some weird

the harm done by having pcmciautils installed.

As I remember it (and as Colin said), you need pcmciautils for 16-bit
PCMCIA cards. I actually run wheezy on an old laptop which does support
16-bit cards (it runs Gnome in fallback mode). I don't use any 16-bit
cards, though.

Perhaps the ideal solution would be to only install pcmciautils in d-i
if the system really does have PCMCIA/Cardbus hardware. It should be
possible to check via /sys.

(Speaking as pcmciautils co-maintainer and former pcmcia-cs maintainer...)

The system-config-printer package is still installed by default.

The GNOME control center now includes a configuration tool for cups, and

functionality is duplicated at the moment.

 Please remove this spurious dependency.

Please note that system-config-printer has many more features (you can
set default printer settings, server settings, etc.). GNOME control
center's tool is _very_ limited (as usual for new GNOME versions).

I can't even add network printers by URL in GNOME control center. It
also complains about firewalld not running when I try to add a network
printer, but firewalld doesn't even seem to have a Debian package.

Still, if people can't find system-config-printer then maybe it doesn't
make sense to include it by default anyway.

Certainly, but at the very least the notification area thingy

There should not be 2 applets running for the same functionality.

Bug#690306: Upgrade to wheezy fails (with InnoDB)

2012-10-12 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: otrs2
Version: 3.1.7+dfsg1-5
Severity: important

Hi,

When trying to upgrade otrs2 from squeeze to wheezy, I get the
following error:

An error occurred while upgrading the database:
mysql said: ERROR 1025 (HY000) at line 48: Error on rename of
'./otrs2/article_flag' to './otrs2/#sql2-64e6-2c' (errno: 152)

Looking at line 48 in
/usr/share/dbconfig-common/data/otrs2/upgrade/mysql/3.0:

ALTER TABLE article_flag DROP FOREIGN KEY FK_article_flag_create_by_id;

But looking at the original table schema (using SHOW CREATE TABLE):

CREATE TABLE `article_flag` (
  `article_id` bigint(20) NOT NULL,
  `article_flag` varchar(50) NOT NULL,
  `create_time` datetime NOT NULL,
  `create_by` int(11) NOT NULL,
  KEY `article_flag_article_id` (`article_id`),
  KEY `article_flag_create_by` (`create_by`)
) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8

Seems there are no foreign keys!

Removing the line above fixes the issue.

Next error:

mysql said: ERROR 1050 (42S01) at line 30: Table 'gi_webservice_config'
already exists

I suppose the error is because DBUpdate-to-3.1.pl has already created
the table. Then
/usr/share/dbconfig-common/data/otrs2/upgrade/mysql/3.1 tries to
create it again. Why do you have your own upgrade script in addition to
upstream?

Also, /usr/share/dbconfig-common/data/otrs2/upgrade/mysql/3.1 sets
storage engine MyISAM. Why is that? MyISAM doesn't even support foreign
keys IIRC. I really want InnoDB because it is much safer.

BTW, I've changed the default engine on my system to InnoDB.

Maybe I'm exaggerating; feel free to downgrade. I just feel that this
bug warrants attention.

Hi again,

I thought it was odd that the version of Chromium in Debian didn't
include the aforementioned patch, since its revision is above r148402.
But Debian's Chromium comes from the 1180 branch, where
lazy_background_task_queue.cc was branched out in r142927. So that
explains why the patch is not included.

Do you really think that this bug makes the package in question
unusable by most or all users?

It only affects GNOME, and you do get gvfs-open if you install Gnome
using the gnome package or the task-gnome-desktop package.

Running xdg-open against any file fails with the error:
 /usr/bin/xdg-open: 491: /usr/bin/xdg-open: gnome-open: not found

This is because neither gvfs-open or gnome-open are on my system. There must
be an issue with dependencies such that gvfs-bin is never installed. I
installed GNOME 3 via the gnome-core package.

The problem is indeed fixed by installing the package gvfs-bin.

I am note sure where the most appropriate place would be to add the necessary
 Depends/Recommends on gvfs-bin.

I think the correct place is probably gnome-session-common, since
gvfs-open should be used if you are running a GNOME session. Reassigning.

In the mean time, there is a generic mechanism in xdg-open which should
be used when gvfs-open is unavailable. It seems that the fallback for
gnome was lost in some version. I will put it back.

Thank you for reporting!

For some reason, the script uses the nonstandard echo -e which does
not work in dash. I suppose it should use /bin/echo -e instead.

Also, it only uses this special treatment for Thunderbird, not Icedove.
I guess that's why nobody noticed before.

Taking a guess, I simply changed the /bin/sh at the top of the xdg-email
script to /bin/bash - which fixed everything. So, please do that in the
 package as well.

I'd rather keep /bin/sh and change the code instead.

Here's an example:

86.59.118.148 STREAM www.debian.org
86.59.118.148 DGRAM
86.59.118.148 RAW

2001:858:2:2:214:22ff:fe0d:7717 RAW

I see the same behavior in chromium and iceweasel. If I go to
http://ip6.me/, I see my IPv4 address instead of my IPv6 address. If I
click IPv6 only Test I get my IPv6 address
(http://ipv6.whatismyv6.com/).

My ifconfig output looks like this:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:81:18:a7:9e
  inet addr:192.168.1.195 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
  inet6 addr: 2002:d567:c828:1:224:81ff:fe18:a79e/64 Scope:Global
  inet6 addr: fe80::224:81ff:fe18:a79e/64 Scope:Link

That is, I have a NAT'ed IPv4 address and a global (non-NAT'ed) 6to4
IPv6 address. The actual 6to4 relaying is done by my router.

ping6 and browsing IPv6-only domains (e.g., ipv6.google.com) work fine.

I have not modified /etc/gai.conf which is empty (except for comments).

I guess that most of these things nowadays have to work without Flash
since iOS doesn't support Flash.

The problem with Gnash/Lightspark is that the sites detect it as a Flash
plugin and then think that Flash support is complete.

Bug#678886: xdg-utils: xdg-open does not open magnet links (for bittorrent)

2012-06-28 Thread Per Olofsson

Hi Norman,

2012-06-24 22:41, Norman Ramsey skrev:

I have attempted to patch the code to use

   xdg-mime query default application/x-bittorrent

My patch works on Debian in a generic desktop environment.
I find the code somewhat ugly.

The general idea is an optional second parameter to

   open_generic_xdg_mime()

which, if present, is taken as the default mime type.

In addition, I had to change the code to account for the possibility
that xdg-mime returns an absolute pathname. Not beautiful, but it
seems to get the job done.

Thank you for your patch. Unfortunately, there are some problems with it:

1. It is written against the version of xdg-utils in stable, which is
quite old. I need a patch that applies to the xdg-utils in unstable.

2. I think the proper way to handle URLs is to use the
x-scheme-handler/foo MIME type for foo: URLs. So you could make your
patch work with all types of URLs by looking for that MIME type.

3. I do not know if xdg-mime ever returns absolute URLs. In any case,
you should split that change out of the patch as it's not really related
to URL handlers or BitTorrent.

If you address these points, I will be happy to consider your patch.

Yes, but this is only an issue if you are not running a desktop

However, since you do not like the way I have fixed it,
I will hope that either you or another Debian maintainer will find a
fix that meets your standards, or that you will mark the bug 'wontfix'.

It should definitely be fixed and I will adapt your patch when I have time.

The problem with xdg-utils is that it was really written as a small
wrapper for desktop environments' tools. The generic part has always
been a hack, and it's only getting uglier. Every time I make changes
something else seems to break, so it is time-consuming to make correct
fixes.

I honestly don't know. When I searched for the problem, I got a lot
of hits with people asking questions, but that probably doesn't mean
 anything.

Hmm, actually, in wheezy and unstable, it *does* support generic scheme
handlers! I had completely missed that :-)

However, you need to set the handler manually with e.g.

xdg-mime default transmission-gtk.desktop x-scheme-handler/magnet

It works for me in generic mode. So try installing xdg-utils from wheezy
or unstable (should work).

Bug#678795: task-desktop: Flash support should pull in browser-plugin-lightspark

2012-06-27 07:34, Christian PERRIER skrev:
Am I correct concluding that we can safely add
 browser-plugin-lightspark to the desktop task?

IMHO, no.

Gnash plays YouTube videos better than Lightspark. With only Gnash
installed, YouTube works better. I belive YT is the most important Flash
site. Having no Flash plugin forces HTML5 mode, and the HTML5 player
works *much* better than either Gnash or Lightspark. Unfortunately, not
all videos are playable (due to ads).

If you go to a ted.com video with Lightspark, you will get an ugly error
message (We're sorry, Lightspark encountered a yet unsupported Flash
file ...). However, with gnash or no Flash plugin, you get a message
about having an old Flash player and you are instead offered a download
link. If you click the link, you get the built-in HTML5 player (or
Totem) and can watch the video.

vimeo.com. Neither works, but lightspark crashes. Disabling the Flash
plugin forces the HTML5 player that works fine.

JW Player: Lightspark crashes. Gnash doesn't work. Disabling Flash
forces HTML5 player that works.

Lightspark seems to crash a lot while gnash handles things more
gracefully even when it doesn't work.

I think we should consider removing Flash entirely, instead of shipping
a plugin that only works sometimes and stops superior HTML5 players from
appearing. I think Flash is a dying technology that will be replaced by
HTML5 in time. When wheezy has been released, more sites will probably
have HTML5 support and the support will continue to grow. Flash support,
OTOH, can only get worse over time since the plugin will not be updated
after the wheezy release and things might break.

The big drawback with not shipping a Flash plugin is that many YouTube
videos won't work. But perhaps they will start work in the future once
Google has added ad support to the HTML5 player?

I am not convinced it is better for Debian to help increase the
liability of people publishing video on the web, by increasing the
user base for H.264, given that the cain of taxes listed in
URL: http://webmink.com/essays/h-264/ will affect us all:

  * Those creating H.264 video need approval from MPEG-LA
  * Those streaming H.264 video need approval from MPEG-LA
  * Those creating players for H.264 video need approval from MPEG-LA

And approval can cost money and require user counting. Only those
using the players as individual persons have been granted approval
from MPEG-LA until at least 2015.

Supporting H.264 in browsers increases the preassure of those that
want to avoid the video tax, and I sure hope Debian will not be part
 of that.

This argument assumes that there are valid patents on H.264 held by the
MPEG-LA. According to http://www.debian.org/legal/patent, Debian will
not knowingly distribute software encumbered by patents. Since Debian is
distributing H.264 encoders and decoders, that must mean that we are not
aware of any patents. If you are aware of patents on H.264, then you
should probably discuss it with pate...@debian.org and not publicly.

In any case, if you don't think Iceweasel should support H.264, then why
support H.264 through a Flash plugin in default installs? Why should
some software in Debian support H.264 but not Iceweasel's video tag?
Seems inconsistent to me.

Bug#678795: task-desktop: Flash support should pull in browser-plugin-lightspark

2012-06-27 15:22, Petter Reinholdtsen skrev:
Actually, you are the one claiming Debian distribute programs
supporting H.264. I do not know if that is true.

I am quite certain that it is true. x264 is in Debian main, and its
description reads video encoder for the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standard. The
wiki page http://wiki.debian.org/MultimediaCodecs also states that
H.264 is included in Debian. Also see the section Legal Issues for a
short explanation.

 I avoid using H.264
files. I am just pointing out issues I see with providing H.264
support in Debian. If you believe these to be non-issues, I can
understand your arguments, but I fail to see that it is reasonable to
believe MPEG-LA have no valid patent to base their considerable income
 on. :)

I understand your point, but the fact is that Debian has decided to
start distributing H.264 codecs. I am not the right person to argue
about it :-)

In any case, if you don't think Iceweasel should support H.264, then
why support H.264 through a Flash plugin in default installs? Why
should some software in Debian support H.264 but not Iceweasel's
video tag? Seems inconsistent to me.

I have not argued here for H.264 support anywhere in Debian, not even
 in Flash.

OK. In any case, H.264 support in Flash is what you get currently if you
install the desktop task, because Gnash uses GStreamer and recommends
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg which has H.264 support. If you go to YouTube with
Gnash or Lightspark, I believe you will get H.264 videos.

I think what most sites do is that they check if you have Flash, and
then gives you Flash. If Flash works, then you will most likely get
H.264 (Flash does not support WebM). Without Flash, there is at least a
chance of getting WebM, as on YouTube. With other browsers such as
Epiphany and Chromium, you can play H.264 videos using HTML5.

Thus, I think we should consider removing browser-plugin-gnash from the
desktop task (and the gnome metapackage). People who want Flash will
install flashplugin-nonfree anyway.

OK, I have now added a lyx-dbg package. However, lyx is currently

Thanks for the info, that makes sense too. What is the canonical
way to execute a .desktop file then?

The canonical way is to implement the desktop entry specification:

http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/

AFAIK there is no command line tool for that. There is code in xdg-open
and mimeopen which launches desktop files in standard applications
directories (like /usr/share/applications/) to open the associated
program for a file, but there is no option to use it on an arbitrary
desktop file.

 Shouldn't the xdg-utils provide
a different tool for this purpose?

I don't know -- what's the use case?

You could file an upstream wishlist bug for that.

No, I think it would be a security risk if xdg-open supported that.
xdg-open is often used by browsers to open downloaded files, and in that
case would execute arbitrary code when invoked on a desktop file.

Usually, xdg-open invokes some other tool to actually open a file. For
example, it invokes gvfs-open if you are running Gnome. In the past,
these tools might have supported opening desktop files. And some might
still do (which is a bug, in that case).

Do you mean, for example, that

What I mean is that I can't get it to hang when I write different values
to /sys/power/pm_test, as suggested in basic-pm-debugging.txt. It only
hangs with the default value none.

Also, it doesn't matter if I put platform or shutdown in
/sys/power/disk. It hangs anyway.

I have noted, however, that it seems to hang much less frequently if I
unload the Virtualbox modules. But I am not certain, and it does hang
anyway after a while.

I am in contact with Bojan Smojver who made some changes in the

I will try the debug steps and report back the results. Since suspend to

the image to disk. Perhaps ACPI is interacting badly with the SATA
 driver or so.

I have now tried some debugging steps, but I can't get the system to

write the image to disk in order to hit the bug.

Bug#663554: Nags me to install proprietary plug-in although printer works

2012-03-12 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: hplip
Version: 3.12.2-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I have an HP LaserJet P2015. Every time I turn on the printer, hplip
pops up a message box:

Driver Plug-In Required. HP Device requires proprietary plug-in which
is missing. Press Next to continue plug-in installation.

This is not true. My printer works fine without any proprietary
plug-in. Perhaps the plug-in adds some feature to the driver, but it
is nothing that I need.

I think that

a) the message should not display unless the plug-in is really
necessary,

b) if it does display, then it should not say that the plug-in is
required when it is not,

c) at the very least, there should be an option: Do not display this
message again.

Thanks.

Bug#659363: Hibernate freezes on HP dc7900 with Linux 3.2 (regression)

Thanks. My only hints are to try narrowing this down using hints
from Documentation/basic-pm-debugging.txt[1] and that it might be
possible to get a fuller log using netconsole[2].

Thanks for the hints! It is a bit time-consuming to debug because the
problem does not happen every time I hibernate. However, it does happen
often enough.

I will try the debug steps and report back the results. Since suspend to
RAM works fine, I'm guessing that it has something to do with writing
the image to disk. Perhaps ACPI is interacting badly with the SATA
driver or so.

I also tried updating my BIOS, but it didn't change anything.

Can you reproduce this without the i915 driver loaded?

Not really. It seems that the error only happens when I have a lot of
processes loaded in memory. Running from the console does not seem to
trigger it. I guess I could try running X with vesa for a while, but I'd
rather not if I don't have to.

Bug#663233: enables Wake on LAN by default

2012-03-09 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: pm-utils
Version: 1.4.1-9
Severity: normal

Hi,

For some reason, pm-utils enables wake on LAN on my system by
default. I don't think that's a good default -- if you need wake on
LAN, you can enable it yourself. Otherwise you're just wasting
power. Most people don't need wake on LAN.

Although it's great that pm-utils disables wake on LAN when running on
battery power, it should not assume that a user wants wake on LAN
enabled just because the system is running on AC power.

The problem lies in /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/disable_wol.

Bug#662776: override: ttf-lyx:oldlibs/extra

2012-03-06 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

ttf-lyx_2.0.3-1_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs, override says fonts.
ttf-lyx_2.0.3-1_all.deb: package says priority is extra, override says optional.

ttf-lyx is now a transitional package, so I would like its overide
entry to be changed to oldlibs/extra.

Thanks in advance.

Bug#662203: overrides lyx's bash-completion

2012-03-04 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: bash-completion
Version: 1:1.99-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

I just uploaded a new version of lyx where I moved the bash-completion
file from /etc/bash_completion.d to
/usr/share/bash-completion/completions.

The problem is that file is not loaded because there is a line in
/etc/bash_completion:

_install_xspec '!*.lyx' lyx

Please remove that line so that the custom completion script is used
instead. (The custom script has more features.) Thanks.

I have tested the source not patched from the xdg-utils source-package and it
works fine. Do I miss somethings ?

Are you running scripts/xdg-open from the source directly? That file is
built from scripts/xdg-open.in when building the package. The version
from the source is outdated. (I don't know why upstream keeps outdated
built files in their git repository, but they do.)

In any case, I just uploaded a new version of xdg-utils with this bug fixed.
