Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I've elected to set my pipeline
to gconfaudiosink, which is working nicely.
Please consider modifying the error message to provide some guidance

Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.9b-4
Section 9.4 of the policy manual describes the format to be used for
init-script messages. However resolvconf recently seems to have
started using some other format, I think because it is using functions
from /lib/lsb/init-functions to generate the messages.

Signal 1 is SIGHUP. This does not happen with ssh 1:3.8.1p1-8.sarge.4.
Example commands:
ssh -o 'ProxyCommand ss

Here is a patch I wrote that allows you to set the modifier used by
evilwm. See the output of 'xmodmap -pm' for the modifier numbers.
I sent this to the author a while back but received no reply.
diff -ur evilwm-0.99.17/events.c evilwm-0.99.17-new/events.c
--- evilwm-0.99.17/events.c 2002-1
"foo 2>&1 | less" will redirect foo's stderr to stdout and thus allow
less to page the result.

The i386 build of this package has sb-bsd-sockets; however on powerpc
