I can confirm this bug.
I could solve the problem installing the package python3-powerline. Maybe vim is
configured to call python3 instead of the default python?

I have the same problem. It has been solved by changing the control
theme as it has been suggested by David Rogers.
Maybe the problem is related to drawing boxes with rounded corners,
since all the themes with slow down reported by Rogers have boxes with
rounded corners.

matlabString and the
default behaviour is spell checking whole text in the file.
A trivial patch is included if only strings and comments are wanted to be spell
