Bug#1031557: uses a full CPU doing nothing in Wayland

Hi Antoine,

is an NVidia GPU involved in your setup?

Bug#1031557: Can't reproduce

2024-02-20 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi,

I tried to reproduce this by runnung RPD after setting
QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland and performing some actions in the GUI, but
everything looks fine in top. I also downgraded to 0.9.33-1.1. I'll try
to get Sway running instead of Gnome and see if this makes a difference.

Bug#682397: darktable: recommend opencl package

2024-02-19 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi,

10 years later, the situation doesn't have changed much. At least for
AMD and NVidua GPUs, you need vendor packages from external sources to
use OpenCL and get a performance gain. In the current state, the
rusticl OpenCL implementation, which is part of Mesa, seems to lack
features and/or is still too buggy. At least it can not be used for
darktable and AMD support has to be enabled by setting an environment
variable.

This is a general issue that the darktable package can not change. So
I propose to close this bug.

Regards,
Tino

One addition: the fact that nothing is logged to /var/log/hd-idle.log
may be connected to the above behaviour: when using hd-idle -a
disk/by-id/..., the name lookup fails and hd-idle silently ignores the
device. In this case, nothing is written to the log file.

Bug#958050: hd-idle: -a parameter behaviour not consistent with -t and with the manpage

2023-04-01 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi,

according to the source code, the option parser for -a tries to resolve
a symlink using a function disk_name(), the result is something like
sda, sdb sdc. This function requires the full pathname including /dev.
The code handling the spindown timer then uses this short name (sda,
sdb, sdc) for further action.

The code handling the -t option does not use that disk_name() function,
but always puts a "/dev/" before the supplied disk name. This is why
you get the "/dev//dev/disk/by-id/ata-... does not exist" error.

So yes, this is indeed inconsistent and confusing. Furthermore, the
device name lookup for -a does not report any errors when the device is
not found.

Bug#1031496: gnome-shell: Support Wayland session for all seats in multiseat setups

2023-02-17 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 43.3-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch upstream

Dear Maintainer,

in multiseat setups, GNOME is limited to only support Wayland sessions on seat0.

There are patches for gdm3 and gnome-shell to enable Wayland sessions for all
seats in a multiseat environment. I use these patches on top of the current
Debian sid packages for some months now without any glitches. I also tested
fast user-switching as requested by the author of these patches.

The original source of the patches is here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/merge_requests/2230/commits

This bug belongs to bug #1031494 which is the gdm part of this issue.

Bug#1031494: gdm3: Support Wayland session for all seats in multiseat setups

2023-02-17 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: gdm3
Version: 43.0-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch upstream

Dear Maintainer,

in multiseat setups, gdm3 is limited to only support Wayland sessions on seat0.

There are patches for gdm3 and gnome-shell to enable Wayland sessions for all
seats in a multiseat environment. I use these patches on top of the current
Debian sid packages for some months now without any glitches. I also tested
fast user-switching as requested by the author of these patches.

The original source of the patches is here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/merge_requests/174/commits

I'll open a separate bug for the gnome-shell part of this issue.

Tino

Subject: [PATCH 1/7] local-display-factory: Acquire seat name properly

systemd-logind escapes the seat name prior to exposing as a DBus object.
As a result, seat names like "seat-name" may be escaped to
"seat_x2dname" when exposed as a DBus object.

Use DBus to acquire the seat name instead of using the last component of
the object path.

Bug#1004285: davical: problems after upgrade to php 8, calendar clients reports "500"

2022-06-01 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi,

Maybe this helps: I recently upgraded to bullseye and my macOS calendar
(from macOS 12.2.1) still works fine with DAViCal.

I did not migrate DAViCal to the PostgreSQL 13 in bullseye yet, so I
still use PostgreSQL 11 for the DAViCal database.

Bug#1012145: bettercap: It looks like the advertised Bluetooth LE function missing

2022-05-30 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: bettercap
Version: 2.32.0-1+b2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

the package description mentions Bluetooth LE features multiple times.

However, the BLE function seems to be missing.

In debian/rules, I found this:

rm -v _build/src/github.com/bettercap/bettercap/network/ble.go
rm -v _build/src/github.com/bettercap/bettercap/network/ble_device.go
rm -rv _build/src/github.com/bettercap/bettercap/modules/ble
rm -rv _build/src/github.com/bettercap/bettercap/modules/gps
rm -v
_build/src/github.com/bettercap/bettercap/modules/events_stream/events_view_ble.go

So I guess the package maintainer intentially removed the BLE functions.

It would be nice if is removed from the package description, too, to not
confuse users.

Tino

Bug#1010570: binaries in source without related source

2022-05-06 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi Antoine,

I just discussed this a bit on #debian-mentors in IRC.

Conclusion:

- autogenerated files in the upstream tarball might be okay, if they are
not used for the binary packages (upgrade.py, install.py) or if they
are regenerated during build time (qrc_resources.py)

- the details about this should be documented in debian/copyright

- the missing images to generate the qrc_resources.py file can be put
  into debian/missing-sources

- we can discuss this issue again with the upstream author once he has
  recovered

- it is unlikely that there will be a new upstream release
  before this

When we follow this, we don't need to repack the upstream source, just
add the images to debian/missing-sources and document all that in
debian/copyright.

What do you thing about this?

Regards,
Tino

Bug#1010570: binaries in source without related source

2022-05-05 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi Antoine,

I'm currently thinking about missing bits for a 0.9.33 release. I
didn't switch a package to dfsg source before, so I'm new to that.

It looks like it should be documented in debian/copyright, e.g. why the
source tarball was repacked and what is the reason.

There should be a changelog entry, which also refers to this bug.

Furthermore, I guess that the procedure to create the upstream tarball
should be described, by providing the script that I used. This could be
done in a README.Packaging.

Please let me know if I am missing something.

Tino

Hi,

I pushed a branch that uses the dfsg source generated by the above
script.

It contains one additional change to generate the qrc_resources.py

I forgot to git add the upgrade.py. Furthermore, Damon mentioned
install.py. And yes, it contains another binary blob (the same ZIP
archive as upgrade.py, I guess).

Here is an improved script:

#!/bin/sh -ex

git reset --hard $1
VERSION=$(sed '/^-/,$d' CHANGES.md | tail -n 1 | cut -d' ' -f1)

echo > upgrade.py
echo > install.py
git add upgrade.py install.py
git rm raphodo/qrc_resources.py

git archive HEAD --prefix=rapid-photo-downloader-$VERSION/ -o
../rapid-photo-downloader_${VERSION}+dfsg.orig.tar.xz

We need the images/ and tips/ folders from the upstream git repository.

This script would work. I already prepared a package using the +dfsg upstream
source generated by the script. The resources are compiles during
build, the result looks good.

#!/bin/sh -ex

git reset --hard $1
VERSION=$(sed '/^-/,$d' CHANGES.md | tail -n 1 | cut -d' ' -f1)

Hi,

that would be an option. I'm currently crafting a script that creates a
tarball. Just removing upgrade.py doesn't work, because it is referenced in the
translations and that will cause a build errors. Replacing it with an empty
file works, and should not affect Debian users.

I used the following command:

$ gbp import-orig --verbose --debian-branch=debian/unstable --pristine-tar

It does not store the upstream signature in the pristine-tar branch:

$ pristine-tar checkout --s signature rapid-photo-downloader_0.9.33.orig.tar.gz

Hi,

I was not aware that the package defines any test specific bits. Can you point
me to the relevant part? I had the impression that a package needs to define
the tests in debian/tests/, and the showinfilemanager package does not have a
debian/tests directory.

Hi,

I've never worked with autopkgtest. My last upload was a few years ago when the
autotestpkg stuff was quite new. What do I need to do in order to reproduce
this? In my pbuilder log, I just see this:

   dh_auto_test -O--buildsystem=pybuild

Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: wishlist

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package "show-in-file-manager":

 * Package name: show-in-file-manager
   Version : 1.1.4-1
   Upstream Author : Damon Lynch
 * URL : https://github.com/damonlynch/showinfilemanager
 * License : Expat
 * Vcs :
https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/packages/python-show-in-file-manager
   Section : python

This python libary is required by recent upstream version for
rapid-photo-downloader, a mighty tool to transfer pictures from cameras
and other devices. Recently, rapid-photo-downloader got broken in
unstable due to Python changes.

This package is needed to update the rapid-photo-downloader package to
the current upstream version and make it work again. It is mostly a
copy of the current Ubuntu package with minor adjustments.

Antoine Beaupré suggested to put it into the Python team on Salsa.

The source builds the following binary packages:

python3-showinfilemanager - Open the system file manager and optionally
select files in it

To access further information about this package, please visit the following
URL:

  https://mentors.debian.net/package/show-in-file-manager/

Alternatively, you can download the package with 'dget' using this command:

  dget -x
https://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/show-in-file-manager/show-in-file-manager_1.1.4-1.dsc

Changes for the initial release:

 show-in-file-manager (1.1.4-1) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * First upload in Debian (Closes: #1009782)

Bug#1009999: pulseaudio: log flooded with "ICE I/O error handler called"

2022-04-21 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 15.0+dfsg1-4
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

pulseaudio sometimes start to flood the log with these messages:

pulseaudio[110205]: ICE I/O error handler called

Currtently, there are millions of it in my systemd journal since yesterday
afternoon:

$ journalctl --user -b |grep 'ICE I/O error handler called'|wc -l
2539092

According to the source code, this seems to be caused by the x11-xsmp module.
My Gnome
session uses Wayland.

Bug#1009782: RFP: python3-showinfilemanager -- Open the system file manager and optionally select files

2022-04-17 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: python3-showinfilemanager
  Version : 1.1.4
  Upstream Author : Damon Lynch
* URL : https://github.com/damonlynch/showinfilemanager
* License : Expat
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : Open the system file manager and optionally select files

The point is not to open the files, but to select them in the file manager,
thereby highlighting the files and allowing the user to quickly do something
 with them.
 .
Functions when called from the command line or within a Python 3 script. Cross-
platform, it supports 19 file managers, and works within the Windows Subsystem
for Linux (WSL) versions 1 and 2.

The package is required for recent versions of rapid-photo-downloader.
Currently,
rapid-photo-downloader is broken in Debian Sid (aborts at startup) due to
Python changes.

python3-showinfilemanager is already packaged for Ubuntu.

Bug#971962: vlc: VAAPI playback doesn't work

2020-10-10 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: vlc
Version: 3.0.11.1-2+b1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

playback using VAAPI doesn't work on my system with the amdgpu driver.

This results in high CPU usage and stuttering video e.g. with 4k 60FPS HEVC
even on a brand new AMD Ryzen 5 (6 Cores/12 Threads). I tried mpv and
playback using VAAPI works with smooth video and very low CPU usage.

There are reports that this may be a Mesa issue.

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/1193

However, I tried to build Mesa with a fix applied and it still didn't work.
So I open this bug and hope to see a coordinated fix for this issue, be it
in Mesa or in VLC.

Tino

just rebuilding libdvdnav against libdvdread7. No changes to the package
are needed. The build-dependency should be adjusted for correctness, though.

Hi,

so this looks like a broken driver or buggy hardware and not like an issue with
ptp4l, as this ioctl() is a standard call to enable hardware timestamping.
Thanks for the analysis. You may get further help on the linuxptp user mailing
list.

Hi,

this issue sounds rather strange. Regarding IP, ptp4l only uses UDP
multicast and unicast, so TCP traffic for SSH should never be
disturbed.

One wild guess from my side is that ptp4l triggers some bug in your
setup. Maybe the network driver for your hardware or the hardware
itself behaves strange once timestamping is enabled by ptp4l.

Bug#866523: instance generator

2019-01-07 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi,

I found another issue regarding the new openvpn-server and openvpn-client
template services. The old openvpn@.service unit has a generator[1] that
looks for config files in /etc/openvpn/ and creates instances if needed.
The openvpn-server@.service and openvpn-client@.service templates are
not handled by a generator, the user has to enable the instances
manually.

I think this difference should be either fixed or documented.

Bug#901928: xwayland: Firefox causes Xwayland to freeze and eat 100% CPU

2018-06-20 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: xwayland
Version: 2:1.20.0-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

while trying to watch the German TV show "Die Sendung mit der Maus" from
https://www.wdrmaus.de/aktuelle-sendung/, my Gnome desktop freezes. I can
SSH into the machine and see that Xwayland eats 100% CPU. The freeze can be
reproduced, it happened every time I accessed the above URL in Firefox 60.

I found a similar issue in the Red Hat bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1579067

The issue mentions patches in
https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/43618/. I applied them to the
xorg-server source, built and installed the package and the freeze does not
happen anymore.

The patches are also attached to this bugreport.

Bug#901883: xwayland: Firefox causes Xwayland to freeze and eat 100% CPU

2018-06-19 Thread tino . mettler+debbugs
Package: xwayland
Version: 2:1.20.0-2
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

while trying to watch the German TV show "Die Sendung mit der Maus" from
https://www.wdrmaus.de/aktuelle-sendung/, my Gnome desktop freezes. I can
SSH into the machine and see that Xwayland eats 100% CPU. The freeze can be
reproduced, it happened every time I accessed the above URL in Firefox 60.

I found a similar issue in the Red Hat bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1579067

The issue mentions patches in
https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/43618/. I applied them to the
xorg-server source, built and installed the package and the freeze does not
happen anymore.

The patches are also attached to this bugreport.

Regards,
Tino

Bug#884253: GPXsee package

Bug#887043: syncevolution: Missing dependency libgdbussyncevo0

2018-01-12 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: syncevolution
Version: 1.5.2-3
Severity: important

All programs linked against libgdbussyncevo.so.0 fail with the following error:

error while loading shared libraries: libgdbussyncevo.so.0: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

Their package lacks a dependency for the libgdbussyncevo0 package.

This applies to syncevolution, syncevo-dbus-server, syncevo-local-sync and
syncevo-dbus-helper.

A workaround is to install the libgdbussyncevo0 package manually.

Reverting to gtk2 fixes the issue.

Regards,
Tino

Bug#805414: gdm3: disable pulseaudio to prevent capturing A2DP sink on session start

Hi,

if this is related to "disable bluetooth in the gdm login screen": this
was meant in the pulseaudio context, where bluetooth audio would be
disabled in the pulseaudio config which is used by gdm. Therefore,
input devices like mice and keyboards won't be affected.

Hi,

I didn't want to state that there are no successors in 1.1. It's just
that the accessors work differently, and making XCA build with 1.0 and
1.1 results in a little #ifdef hell. Another annoyance was that the
OpenSSL documentation was somewhat behind at least last year, and the
web server was in some sort of reorganisation, resulting in a lot if
404 errors.

I'll ask upstream about the current state.

Tino

Hi,

I already talked to upstream about this last year during the "OpenSSL
1.0 vs. 1.1 in Stretch" discussion. XCA makes use of many data that is
not available in 1.1 anymore, making a migration non-trivial.

Bug#856040: unblock: syncevolution/1.5.2-2

2017-02-24 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: unblock

Please unblock package syncevolution

It was discovered that the DBus activation of syncevo-dbus-server doesn't
work anymore. This totally breaks sync-ui, also also automatic background
syncs, as syncevo-dbus-server is never started.

The fix is trivial, as it just adds a file which was introduced in the
1.5.2 upstream release, but not included in the 1.5.2-1 package.

The corresponding bug is #854941.

You are the second person stating this today, but I still think it is a
misunderstanding regarding the network interface (like eth0) and the
ptp device (/dev/ptpX).

It will always complain. Both according to the documentation and
according to my own setup (one ethernet interface -> still need to
specify the ethernet interface).

Hi,

do you mean this?

-
If the ethtool ioctl is available, then the ptp4l program will use
it in order to discover the proper PHC device.
-

This means that ptp4l can find the proper PHC device (/dev/ptpX) that
belongs to a certain ethernet interface (like eth0). Before that, the
user had to specify both the ethernet interface (-i) and the PHC device
(-p) to use.

The ethernet interface still has to be specified either on the command
line (-i option) or in the config file.

>From the manual page:

   -i interface
Specify a PTP port, it may be used multiple times. At
least one port must be specified by this option or in
  the configuration file.

Thanks. I don't fully understand 4. What exactly should be detected,
and how?

Thanks for the suggestions. Currently, I just look how Fedora sets up

Hi,

thanks for the comments. If I got this right, there won't be a default
name that would fit most systems as of Stretch and later.

A userfriedly approach would be to look for a device with PTP support
and use this, or supply a debconf request with devices that can be
used. I'll try to incorporate this. My debconf foo is limited. though,
so this might take a while.

Hi,

I can reproduce that with the Version in Stretch (and sid). The dbus
server is also not invoked for normal syncevolution runs at it seems.
Forcing the dbus-server to be started results in a failure.

Bug#851139: libimobiledevice6: Broken pairing records may have been generated with some GnuTLS versions

2017-01-12 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: libimobiledevice6
Version: 1.2.0+dfsg-3
Severity: important

According to
https://github.com/libimobiledevice/libimobiledevice/issues/413#issuecomment-258321151
broken pairing records may be generated and living in /var/lib/lockdown
even after the upgrade to a fixed version, causing connection failures.

The reason for the failure is hard to find by the user and manual
steps will be needed to fix it. Therefore I suggest to remove the broken
pairing entries during the upgrade.

The attached patch does exactly this, plus a notification about the
issue via debconf. My patch is based on the NMU provided by Nathan
Kennedy in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=840931#17

Bug#840931: Stale pairing records may be left

2017-01-11 Thread Tino Mettler
Hi,

is anybody with upload permissions reading this? There are roughly 2
weeks left to upload a fixed package to sid so it can migrate to
testing before the full freeze. If nobody else does, I'll prepare a
fixed package with the mentioned patches and the removal of stale
pairing entries which can be uploaded by someone with upload
permsissions. My key (ADA5A11B2B805596C78E9067E806E77FF82155BC) is in
the keyring, so granting upload permissions for me would work, too.

Hi,

a broken pairing entry in /var/lib/lockdown contains this, as expected:

DeviceCertificate

The DeviceCertificate contains no data in case of a broken entry. This
should be easy to detect. Here is an example using xmlstarlet:

if test -z $(xmlstarlet sel -t -v
'//key[.="DeviceCertificate"]/following-sibling::data[1]'
74f06bdcba12be895b317ff02107cf4f15b8b0d0.plist) ; then
rm foo.plist
fi

This would require a dependency to xmlstarlet, though.

Hi,

according to
https://github.com/libimobiledevice/libimobiledevice/issues/413#issuecomment-258321151
stale paring data might be left.

If I got this right, in this case the user might still not be able to
access the iOS device even with the above patches applied. I'll try to
check if I can reproduce this with old pairing entries.

I suggest a least a NEWS entry instructing the user how to remove old
pairing entries. We could also try to check for broken pairing entries

Bug#843769: debhelper: dgbsym package contains the wrong symbols

2016-11-09 Thread Tino Mettler
Package: debhelper
Version: 10.2.2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I tried to use the xca-dbgsym package and discovered that it contained the
wrong symbols. The package uses a simple rules file that invokes all
default dh_* steps.

I analysed it in a chroot and came to the following conclusion:

1. the build ID of the xca binary (the only binary in the package) is
   736a4c65440b1dcfa898ca95a236c273dba8f06f

2. dh_strip created
   /usr/lib/debug/.build-id/04/a18d979aaa63ae0f23ecf5578b59b4369c29eb.debug

3. there is a binary called xca_db_stat in the build which is not contained
in the binary package, but this binary has the build ID
   04a18d979aaa63ae0f23ecf5578b59b4369c29eb

It looks like dh_strip uses the wrong binary for extracting the debug
symbols.

Hi,

packages that currently FTBFS will be removed from testing in 2 weeks.
The freeze deadline for re-entry is January 5th. With the migration
delay the fixed package should be uploaded until the end of December,
where may people will be on holiday I guess (both Debian and Upstream
developers).

So I think it's desirable for many maintainers to have a fixed package
in Sid before Christmas or they will have to ask for a freeze
exception. I'd be glad if this is announced more prominent, e.g on the
debian-devel-announce mailing list.

Hi,

sorry for the delay. I'm currently working on 1.5.1 packages as well

Hi,

You can find the package here:

Hi,

Hi Mattia,

thanks for the offer to sponsor the upload. I'll incorporate the change
in a new package and also upgrade to the current upstream version.

I use gitpkg which handles the patches from corresponding git commits
inside a patches branch. That's why there is no debian/patches in the
master branch. The UNRELEASED in debian/changelog is intended. I'm not
a DD and AFAIK the release is finally set by the uploader.

My fundamental problem with git-buildpackage is that patches to the
upstream source are kept in files, not in git commits, which is, for
me, one of the main benefits from using git. Yes, I know there is gbp
pq, but still...

Thanks for that.

So the list of pending changes on my side:

1. Incorporate your patch with spelling errors

2. Incorporate a fix for the lintian warning regarding the BSD license

I also have some remarks on your package after I glaced over the
changes.

1. You removed source/git-patches, which I consider a bad thing as it
would break my setup for gitpkg.

2. It looks as if you intended to fix the lintian warning
copyright-refers-to-deprecated-bsd-license-file by just removing the
reference to /usr/share/common-licenses/BSD. In my unserstanding, the
full text to the license needs to be supplied in debian/copyright
instead.

3. The above change to debian/copyright is missing in the changelog

So does git-buildpackage in my opinion. :-)

I contacted upstream if there is a way to provide CPPFLAGS without
messing with the upstream source (e.h. Rules.mk).

Another missing item is the current policy standards version. I'll
check if the version bump is ok without further changes to the package,
but it would be nice if you could double check this.

Lintian also reports that menu support should be dropped. I'll fix
this, too.

Hi,

first, thanks for your work on the xca package, as I'm too lazy to do
it obviously. :-)

I already prepared a new package for 1.3.1 which included major changes
to debian/rules, but found an issue regarding certificate request
generation. I was disturbed by real life too often to finalize the
package after upstream released 1.3.2 with a fix for this. You can have
a look on the 1.3.1 package here:

I'll try to release a 1.3.2 package during the next few days.

Hi,

can you please provide more details about this bug? I can not reproduce
it. When you create a certificate request (CR), there is no
certificate yet, so I have no idea what "exports the public
certificate" means. The exported data looks like a valid CR to me and
could be processed as such. I also asked the upstream author, and he
had no idea what this bug report is about, too.
