Bug#1042399: I confirm there is a problem
Hi I am new to this Debian mailing lists and have started to learn what and how things are working here because I want to support Debian in some way in future. About this issue: The MariaDB Website say there is even a newer version "MariaDB 10.11.5 Stable (GA)" released. https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-10-11-5-changelog/ I am not sure this issue here is fixed with the newer version. What would be the right way to report this to the issue? Should I just post it to the mailing list or directly to some responsible person? Sorry for asking you best, Carsten. Bug#995270: fwupdmgr: WARNING: Firmware can not be updated in legacy BIOS mode
Package: fwupd Version: 1.5.7-4 Followup-For: Bug #995270 X-Debbugs-Cc: hunguponcont...@gmail.com Dear Maintainer, This is just a "me too", to validate the experience of the original submitter. I too encountered this same bug, when the Gnome Software program notified me of a firmware update for my Logitech Unifying receiver, which I use for my Logitech k360 wireless usb keyboard and my Logitech m325 wireless usb mouse. Gnome Software first gave this message: "Device Firmware Unifying Receiver Device Update RQR12.03_B0025 -> RQR12.10_B0032 Device cannot be..ed during update." But it was unable to perform the update, leaving the mouse and keyboard non- functional until reboot. It gave this error message: "Unable to update "Unifying Receiver Device Update": failed to get device after detatch replug: device 92831be453a0f345462e7050e26a5675d4xx did not come back" Now, Gnome Software taunts me with a persistent notification of this firmware update, which I cannot do, and I cannot make the notification go away, except by completely uninstalling the Gnome Software program. Output from fwupdmgr get-devices includes this: "WARNING: Firmware can not be updated in legacy BIOS mode See https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/wiki/PluginFlag:legacy-bios for more information. I tried to do the same fixes as the original submitter, with the same (non)results. I am using a Cinnamon Desktop Environment boot up using a a BIOS, not UEFI setup. So it appears that unless fwupd is re-written to add support for non-UEFI setups, I may be stuck with this problem until some time in the future when I try to do a fresh install using a UEFI setup, and hoping that works on my older computer. -- System Information: Debian Release: 11.0 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable-security'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 5.10.0-8-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU threads) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages fwupd depends on: ii libc6 2.31-13 ii libcurl3-gnutls7.74.0-1.3+b1 ii libefiboot137-6 ii libelf1

Your options at this point are then, in no particular order; * Live without ELPA (easy if you can live with base Emacs; hard if you need ELPA packages); * Find or create a backport of the TLS1.3 handling fix yourself, and use that instead of the Debian-packaged Emacs; * Turn off TLS1.3 and take steps to mitigate the risks (not sure what exactly that would look like in practice) I believe Emacs version 26.3 fixes this. I don't know how updating packages works in stable releases, or if it is even possible. I am new to Debian. In normal circumstances, the "stable" version does not get updates except for critical security fixes. However, there was already one attempt at fixing this particular bug which however doesn't seem to work satisfactorily, which is apparently what caused this bug to be submitted. There definitely won't be a 26.3 in Buster, but perhaps the maintainer would still like to take another stab at providing a backport for 26.1 which actually works, and release that fix to Buster. Perhaps see also the discussion in the linked original bug https://bugs.debian.org/942413 /* era */

Bug#968387: apparmor: Broken printing and printer autodiscovery
Package: apparmor Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I installed lxc on a freshly installed debian 10 (standard iso + the tasks: desktop, kde, print-server, laptop). - The printer was not autodiscovered in the "Print" window of any program, and in the "Add printer" window of system-config-printer-settings. - Even after setting the device URI, print jobs did not make it to the printer and there were no info about toner levels, printer availability, etc. I did not touch apparmor, but aa-status said it was enforcing on a lot of programs, including /usr/sbin/{cupsd,cups-browsed}, so I ran aa-complain /usr/sbin/cupsd aa-complain /usr/sbin/cups-browsed Now, the printer was autodiscovered, but printing still did not work, so I did apt-get autopurge apparmor Now printing works fine, I have toner level info, etc.
Bug#915458: Thanks a lot, Callum
Bless you Callum for looking into this at all! I’ve been wanting this tool in the repositories for a long time already because i dislike it so much to have to use 10 different USB flash drives for different Linux distributions instead of just one 64 GB flash drive :) Maybe some of the projects‘ developers can help us.. I am not a programmer myself at all.

Package: ruby-mail Severity: important Tags: upstream, security Messages with too many tiny MIME parts can OOM on split(). Messages with many nested MIME parts can also OOM (not sure about recursion). Upstream is responsive and working on a fix. Small messages can generate these, since the a boundary only needs to be 4 bytes "--a\n" and the header+body of each part can just be 4 bytes "x:y\n\n", too. Ruby needs 40 bytes to represent a 4 byte string on 64-bit: This affects many other MIME parsers, too.

Bug#942515: gitlab: Missing package in buster-backports / buster-fasttrack
Package: gitlab Version: 11.11.8+dfsg-1+fto10+1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, Iʼm using GitLab thanks to the repositories provided here: https://people.debian.org/~praveen/gitlab/ It’s been a couple days since some packages got an update, including gitlab-common to 12.1.13-2+fto10+1 But for some reason gitlab (the package, not the entire software) has been removed from the repository instead of getting the 12.1.13 update. I didn’t set a higher priority to this bug as the repository I use is not officially part of the main Debian branches, but I still think it is quite important as this is in my opinion the only repository allowing to install GitLab in a sane way: - Debian stable base - no Omnibus - Debian-reviewed dependencies Of course, if I can help in any way feel free to ask ;) In addition to the system informations automatically collected, my full list of APT sources: deb http://mirrors.digitalocean.com/debian buster main contrib deb http://mirrors.digitalocean.com/debian buster-updates main contrib deb http://mirrors.digitalocean.com/debian buster-backports main contrib deb http://security.debian.org buster/updates main contrib deb https://repos.insights.digitalocean.com/apt/do-agent main main deb https://people.debian.org/~praveen/gitlab/ buster-backports main contrib deb https://people.debian.org/~praveen/gitlab/ buster-fasttrack main contrib (I guess the "do-agent" one can be safely ignored, it’s only required by my VPS provider) -- System Information: Debian Release: 10.1 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.19.0-6-cloud-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages gitlab depends on: ii asciidoctor 1.5.8-1 ii bc 1.07.1-2+b1 ii bundler 1.17.3-3 ii bzip21.0.6-9.2~deb10u1 ii dbconfig-pgsql 2.0.11+deb10u1 ii debconf [debconf-2.0]1.5.71 ii gitlab-common11.11.8+dfsg-1+fto10+1 ii gitlab-workhorse 8.5.2+debian-1~bpo10+1 ii libjs-bootstrap4 [node-bootstrap]4.3.1+dfsg2-1 ii libjs-pdf1.5.188+dfsg-1~bpo10+1 ii libjs-popper.js [node-popper.js] 1.14.6+ds2-1 ii libjs-uglify 2.8.29-6 ii lsb-base 10.2019051400 ii nginx1.14.2-2+deb10u1 ii nginx-full [nginx] 1.14.2-2+deb10u1 ii node-autosize4.0.2~dfsg1-3 ii node-axios 0.17.1+dfsg-2 ii node-brace-expansion 1.1.8-1 ii node-cache-loader2.0.1-2~bpo10+1 ii node-chart.js2.7.3+dfsg-5 ii node-core-js 2.4.1-2 ii node-css-loader 1.0.1-1 ii node-d3 4.13.0-6~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-array1.2.4-2~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-axis 1.0.12-2~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-brush1.0.6-2~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-ease 1.0.5-2~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-scale1.0.7-6~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-selection1.4.0-3~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-shape1.3.5-2~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-time 1.0.11-3~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-time-format 2.1.3-2~bpo10+1 ii node-d3-transition 1.2.0-3~bpo10+1 ii node-dateformat 3.0.0-1 ii node-exports-loader 0.7.0-2~bpo10+1 ii node-file-loader 3.0.1-1~bpo10+1 ii node-fuzzaldrin-plus 0.5.0+dfsg-1 ii node-glob7.1.3-2 ii node-imports-loader 0.8.0-2~bpo10+1 ii node-jed 1.1.1-1 ii node-jquery 3.4.0+dfsg-1~bpo10+1 ii node-jquery-ujs 1.2.2-2 ii node-jquery.waitforimages

Bug#910077: ITP: binoculars -- Surface X-ray diffraction 2D detector data reduction
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Picca Frédéric-Emmanuel * Package name: binoculars Version : 0.0.1 Upstream Author : Willem Onderwaater * URL : https://github.com/id03/binoculars * License : GPL-3+ Programming Lang: Python Description : Surface X-ray diffraction 2D detector data reduction BINoculars is a tool for data reduction and analysis of large sets of surface diffraction data that have been acquired with a two-dimensional X-ray detector. The intensity of each pixel of a two-dimensional detector is projected onto a three-dimensional grid in reciprocal-lattice coordinates using a binning algorithm. This allows for fast acquisition and processing of high-resolution data sets and results in a significant reduction of the size of the data set. The subsequent analysis then proceeds in reciprocal space. It has evolved from the specific needs of the ID03 beamline at the ESRF, but it has a modular design and can be easily adjusted and extended to work with data from other beamlines or from other measurement techniques.

Bug#904932: qa.debian.org: sysv installed, on removing systemd networking break
Package: qa.debian.org Severity: important Dear Maintainer, Sorry this is going to qa, reportbug lists the ~40 different groups/address I could only see ~22-40. So, a couple bugs. So, after installing sysvinit, rebooting, kde and networking work. Then, if you apt-get remove systemd, then both kde and networking break, KDE starts but you can't login, and networking is so broken you can't ping and name services are broken. (That's in stable) Another problem is, when installing testing, when you try to install sysvinit core, your libkf5 version is 5.47.0-1, but you get several errors along the lines of unmet dependencies kio | depends | libkf5auth5 (>= 4.96.0) but is not going to be installed *** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? * What was the outcome of this action? * What outcome did you expect instead? *** End of the template - remove these template lines *** -- System Information: Debian Release: 9.5 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.9.0-7-amd64 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: sysvinit (via /sbin/init)
Bug#901021: Provide a GTK+ 2 version of Chromium.
Package: chromium Version: 63.0.3239.40-1 Starting from version 63.0.3239.84-1, Chromium is compiled against GKT+ 3. This is a bad idea. I have noticed the huge trend in Debian's repo. More and more packages are compiled against GTK3 instead of GTK2. GTK+3 is not an upgrade from GTK+ 2, it is a bastardization. https://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/gnome-et-al-rotting-in-threes https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-devel-list/2017-December/msg00051.html >"Application developers (not the users) are the ones that ought to decide how >their application looks and behaves." My suggestion is provide two packages, "chromium-gtk2" and "chromium-gtk3", compiled against GTK2 and GTK3 respectively.

Package: virt-manager Version: 1:1.4.0-5 Severity: normal To enable EFI / UEFI support in virt-manager (it is greyed out otherwise), one must install the ovmf package. Bug#871547: general: Can't change to any other background.
Package: general Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, Running Debian Unstable, with Cinnamon Desktop Environment, default Display Manager. Upgraded from Debian 9 Stable. Was okay. Updated last on 2017-08-07, then shut down. Upon reboot 2017-08-08, background has reverted to the softwaves-theme wallpaper image installed by default upon installation of Debian 9 Stable. This is the same image that displays behind grub menu during startup. Using the Change Background GUI (just like in Gnome 3), clicking on any backgound or other image highlights the image preview, but then nothing else happens. Tried rebooting, using the Cinnamon, Sofware rendering, and Default Xsession choices at the login screen. Sent this email to debian-u...@lists.debian.org: - Hi. - Debian Unstable. - Cinnamon desktop environment. - Updated 2017-08-07, then shut down. - On 2017-08-08, booted up. Now, background is the Debian 9 default "Flipper" image. Background can not be changed. What to check / what to do? -- Did not receive any reply, so do not know which package(s) may be involved. Also checked Debian forums, did not see similar problem posted. Did not post problem to forum.s Also tried on IRC (freenode - #Dbian channel). Received only one vague suggestion: "downgrade gnome-settings-daemon gsettings-desktop-schemas to testing versions". Chose not to try suggested action, as determined to have excess risk of operator error. Have waited for spontaneous fix by further update, still waiting. Will provide additional information to the extent that I can. For security and other reasons, I used sysv-rc-conf to disable auto-starting of lighttpd and some other services. The program's console UI "properly" cleared the auto-start boxes for lighttpd (and other services) in all runlevels and exited normally. Upon rebooting, I was very upset to learn that lighttpd had auto-started anyway (seen with "service lighttpd status" which shows it as executing with /lib/systemd/system/lighttpd.service ). Other services, those which start from /etc/init.d/* seem to respond correctly, though. Note that this is a real-world impact of related bug #791689 If users are led to believe that a service has been disabled when it is in fact still running, the consequences could be serious from a security perspective, not to mention that if updates are made to the unit files themselves, major conflicts could emerge from duplicate services and so on. Bug#858013: live-config: URLs with http scheme don't work any longer for boot parameters debconf-preseed and hooks
Package: live-config Version: 5.20170112 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, using the next official Debian Live iso images I would like to have functionality for boot parameters live-config.debconf-preseed and live-config.hooks revived (fetching files by using wget fetchable URLs with http scheme, see https://manpages.debian.org/testing/live-config-doc/live-config.7.en.html for reference). This does not work any longer (see /proc/cmdline and /var/log/live/config.log excerpt of an testing/stretch based live-build environment below): user@debian:~$ cat /proc/cmdline BOOT_IMAGE=/live/vmlinuz boot=live components live-config.debconf-preseed=http://10.19.27.243:8080/hook1.sh live-config.hooks=http://10.19.27.243:8080/hook2.sh initrd=/live/initrd.img user@debian:~$ grep -e debconf -e hooks /var/log/live/config.log live-config: debconf/lib/live/config/0010-debconf: 78: /lib/live/config/0010-debconf: Setup_network: not found keyboard-configuration anacron util-linux login openssh-server hooks/lib/live/config/9990-hooks: 71: /lib/live/config/9990-hooks: Setup_network: not found The easiest (and my preferred) way to solve this issue is to move the start of the whole live-config phase to a point where systemd has reached network.target (solution proposal 1, see git-diff below). As this proposal potentially may cause systemd-related problems during the boot phase a probably more reasonable approach for you might be to stay on systemd local-fs.target, to adapt definition of function Setup_network in /bin/live-config and to add it to /lib/live/config/0010-debconf and /lib/live/config/9990-hooks (solution proposal 2, see git-diff below). Bug#821090: gnome-terminal: x-terminal-emulator doesn't pass all args to gnome-terminal
Package: gnome-terminal Version: 3.14.1-1+deb8u1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, x-terminal-emulator doesn't pass all args to gnome-terminal that are described in "man x-terminal-emulator" - at least --hide-menubar and --show-menubar are suppressed * What led up to the situation? F10 key bound to menubar of gnome-terminal which 'sucks'. I looked for a solution - easiest appears to run gnome-terminal with --hide-menubar. with x-terminal-emulator this switch didn't work (vs man page!), so I vi-ed x -terminal-emulator. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I vi-ed x-terminal-emulator and added the lines "elsif ($opt eq '--hide-menubar') { push(@args, '--hide-menubar'); }" right before the closing "}" of "while ($opt = shift(@ARGV))" * What was the outcome of this action? x-terminal-emulator works as expected * What outcome did you expect instead? not needing to manually edit a package to meet the specs/functionality man pages describe I think this needs to be addressed by the package maintaners, not the single user. Please pass all parameters a user gives to gnome-terminal (only filter or change what's needed). Bug#767682: Debian Bug #767682 - D-I: Installer Hangs on Re-Formatting Ext4 Partition
This is a nasty bug! It took us by surprise. We were using netboot.tar.gz installer build=20150422+deb8u2 and successfully installed Debian 8.1 and 8.2 prior to end of November/December 2015. It had failed to install in the same environment for the past couple of weeks or since about January 20, 2016. The pxe installs are again successful by downloading netboot.tar.gz build=20150422+deb8u3 even installing on top of an old Debian system.

Bug#809037: cloud.debian.org: Python3 unavailable in jessie64 vagrant base box
Package: cloud.debian.org Severity: important Dear Maintainer, I created a VM from the official Debian 'jessie64' vagrant base box and when I tried to use python3 on the created VM, I found that python 3 was not installed on it. Python 3 was been out since 2008 and should be the way forward for any new python codebase. Even in the Debian project, there is an effort to migrate all Debian components that are Python 2 only to run on Python 3 as well. Iirc, Python3 was installed in the previous versions of this base box as well. So it makes a lot of sense to have python3 installed in the base box. -- System Information: Debian Release: 8.2 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system)
Bug#803325: vlc: "failed to create video output" with video memory output; SIGSEGV with other video output
Package: vlc Version: 2.2.1-4+b1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? Bug#801605: Same problem, different error.
I have the same problem here but my error is different. xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (No such file or directory) >From what I've read it's caused by Debian not providing correct systemd files and thus breaking Xorg's "unprivileged mode". Before "upgrading", I could startx/xinit as a user no problem. After "upgrading", no. It only works when using sudo or as root.
Bug#793413: general: No samba config
Package: general Severity: important Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? I need to easily share my windows ntfs drives to my family and there is no program for it like system-config-samba gui utility * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I did use a code in terminal for instalation this utility and terminal hanged * What was the outcome of this action? Unable to locate package system-config-samba * What outcome did you expect instead? I want tu run and config my samba easily Also - there is a visual glitch (R9 280)- no screen VSYNC screen tearing occurs sometimes in the browser, this i presume would be much worse after installing proprietary AMD driver (like in linux Mint) Also - mouse speed is too high - there is no deceleration option below the limit Also - my sound card (Xonar DX) plays too quiet - there is no alsa config utility to increse that hardware volume Also - pidgin sucks - does not download my contacts by itself (Gadu-Gadu) Also - there is nothing to enhance the sound like equalizer or dolby- headphones, just a raw sound is bad i need features -- System Information: Debian Release: 8.1 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: sysvinit (via /sbin/init) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#416086: initscripts bug prevents upgrade to jessie
Isn't this the same bug that is also blocking the wheezy to jessie upgrade on amd64 platform? The error message is that initscripts fails configuration because it cannot create the symlink /dev/shm - because it already exists. Deleting or renaming the existing /dev/shm symlink allows initscripts to be configured and the upgrade process to continue.
