Bug#575536: [Enthought-Dev] mayavi2 segfaults under VNC

 Cancel that, I had a few ideas of what to inspect and made progress
 without gdb. The following code produces a segfault and is a pure wx
 code:

 import wx
 import wx.glcanvas

 # every wx app needs an app
 app = wx.PySimpleApp()

 # create the top-level frame, sizer and glcanvas
 frame = wx.Frame(None, -1, test, size=(400,400))
 widget = wx.glcanvas.GLCanvas(frame, -1)
 sizer = wx.BoxSizer(wx.VERTICAL)
 sizer.Add(widget, 1, wx.EXPAND)
 frame.SetSizer(sizer)
 #import pdb; pdb.set_trace()
 frame.Layout()

 Unless we are doing something in this code (it's pretty much a summary of
 what happens when we create a VTK render window), I guess that this means
 that the bug is not ours (pfff, saved :).

 I'd love feedback from more experienced wx/gl hackers: what are we doing
 wrong? What can be done to avoid the problem? What is actually going on
 (if someone knows)?

 Should the bug be reassigned to wx?

Thanks a lot, that was quick! I'm reassigning the bug to wx. Let's see
what they have to say about this.

Also, could you tell us what version of wx are you using?

Thanks,
Varun

Hmmm.. I tried building the package again today, and I could reproduce

present in the javaee.jar, which is included in the classpath. In
fact, if you try to rebuild the package from the failed state; it
builds fine. I'm not sure what is going on here.

 This is a simple library for retrofitting user-interface input
 validation to Swing applications. It handles validating user input
 when the user changes a component's value, showing error messages and
 decorating components to indicate which component is the source of
 the problem. It contains a large number of built-in validators to
 handle most common situations, such as validating numbers, email

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the notify-osd package in Debian
doesn't replace the default notification-daemon yet, unless done
manually. So I don't think a conflict is necessary here.

 Hello,

 Trying to have a look on the source code of javahelp, I retrieved the debian
 source with:
 apt-get source javahelp2

 The list of the directories is the following one:
 debian  jhMaster JSearchIndexer_nbproject
 javahelp_nbproject  JSearchClient_nbproject

 When I tried to get through uscan upstream jh2.0.zip
 the content of the source package is completely different:
 demos  doc  javahelp  LICENSE.html  README  README.html  src.jar

 It is no big deal but there should be a debian/README.source explaining:
 * what are the differences
 * how it can be done again
 (and a repack script would be great)

 The only reference I can found is in the changelog and is:
 * Remove zip archive from orig.tar.gz and repackage

Sorry for the confusion.

1/ The original source is actually available here (also mentioned in
debian/copyright) which matches with debian source:
https://javahelp.dev.java.net/files/documents/5985/59373/javahelp2-src-2.0.05.zip

2/ uscan is using some other site to track the upstream-version; I have
added a comment now to clarify this.

3/ The original source for version 2.0.05 was packaged by Marek Slama
(CC:ed) which included the zip file inside the orig.tar.gz, which I
unpackaged in version 2.0.05.ds1 because it was causing some build
issues.

 Hello,

 When I am using a documentation based on the javahelp2 browser, I cannot see
 any icons. This renders many options of javahelp2 to be unsuable.

 It is due to an error in the repack of the javahelp sources.
 The fix is pretty easy.
 1) download upstream archive
 2) unpack src.jar inside
 3) Copy the missing files
 cp -R javahelp2-upstream/src/javax/help/plaf/basic/images/
 javahelp2-debian-dir/jhMaster/JavaHelp/src/new/javax/help/plaf/basic/
 cp -R javahelp2-upstream/src/javax/help/plaf/gtk/images/
 javahelp2-debian-dir/jhMaster/JavaHelp/src/new/javax/help/plaf/gtk/

I am not sure if the License for these images is DFSG compatible. The
LICENSE.html says Sun Microsystems, Inc. Binary Code License
Agreement. I guess they were removed from debian source due to
license issues, but may be Marek Slama can clarify about this.

 upon which I see

 The program 'python' received an X Window System error.
 This probably reflects a bug in the program.
 The error was 'GLXBadContext'.
   (Details: serial 63 error_code 154 request_code 143 minor_code 5)

 and I'm dumped back to the command prompt

 I've found that one workaround is to manually start the engine first:

 from enthought.mayavi import mlab,api
 api.Engine().start()
 mlab.test_surf()

 will give me a working figure.

 This workaround does not however work for the OffScreenEngine:

 from enthought.mayavi import mlab,api
 api.OffScreenEngine().start()
 mlab.test_surf()

Thanks for the report.

For me only the OffScreenEngine doesn't work, but the regular mode
works fine and I am able to see the popup window.

I have forwarded your report upstream:

Thanks,
Varun

get the latest version of python-vtk 5.2.1-6.

I am sorry, but this bug is bit tricky and I have tried fixing it in

This bug appears only if you have many photos in your flickr

 Hi Varun!

 Sorry, my English is very bad.
 I use pidgin-libnotify in the german language version, therefore, some
 differences in translation occurred. I still try again to explain.
 So if a buddy logs off, shows pidgin-libnotify but Buddy has been logged on.

Thanks for the quick response.

Okay, I looked at the german translation file and indeed there seems
to be some mistake in the translation, because I see same strings for
signed on and signed off (lines 46 and 51):

---
#: src/pidgin-libnotify.c:347
#, c-format
msgid %s signed on
msgstr %s hat sich angemeldet

#: src/pidgin-libnotify.c:379

I am attaching the full translation file and if you know german, could
you please correct the messages and mail me back. I could forward it
upstream and also fix the debian package.

Thanks,

 Hi,

 I've prepared a new release of libjaudiotagger-java for upstream 1.0.9.
 It's targeted and needed by jajuk upstream release 1.7.1.

 Can you please review this ?

   * New upstream release
   * debian/watch: Use java.net repository (which contains new releases!)
   * debian/control:
 - Build-Depends on default-jdk-builddep
 - Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.1 (no changes needed)
 - Change section to java
   * debian/rules: use default-java as JAVA_HOME
   * debina/orig-tar.{sh|excludes}: strip audio and others binary files from
 ZIP
   * debian/build.xml:
 - compile with nowarn to keep build log readable
 - exclude LogFormatter from build (use com.sun classes)
   * debian/ant.properties: new source directory is src in orig.tar.gz
   * Add myself as Uploaders

 You'll find the patch attached or you can find my work on pkg-java SVN
 repository (r8161)

I can't find the orig-tar.exclude file on pkg-java svn, could you
please check?

Thanks for your work.

 Hi Torsten,

 I've seen in Debian-Java SVN repository, that you've prepared a new upload of
 Substance target to main :

 substance (5.0-2) unstable; urgency=low

   * Tango icons are now released to the public domain.
   * Switch to openjdk-6.
   * Move package to main.

 This bug is just a reminder to upload this package to unstable/main.

Torsten had uploaded the package but it got rejected. See the mail
below. If you have some time and would like on work on the package
then:

1/ Please try to contact upstream and see if these license issues
could be resolved.

2/ If not, then it might be a good idea to separate out all Quaqua
components into a separate non-free package.

Thank you.

compatible with the new version of samba-3.2 and upstream is working
on fixing this.

Hello Varun,

I am sorry for long delay, i was a little bit busy.
This bug is raised by new libsmbclient library too.

libsmbclient-3.2 has practically the same api as libsmbclient-3.0 but has
changed internally a lot. The most notable change is the broken possibility to
use several samba context simultaneously without interlocking. libsmbclient-3.0
support this feature while libsmbclient-3.2 does not (see
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5847)

SMBNetFS relay on that libsmbclient-3.0 feature. It can be changed quite easily
at the price of much longer SMBNetFS responsibility.

Summarizing things: SMBNetFS require libsmbclient-3.0. If it can not be
fulfilled for upcoming debian release, it will be better to drop SMBNetFS
support from debian testing.

PS: I am currently working on proper porting of SMBNetFS to samba-3.2 but this
require a huge amount of changes.

Bug#504425: Please fix these packaging problems

 I was planning to port the packaging changes I did in Ubuntu for jftp
 to Debian this week. But Varun has already done most of the changes in
 1.51~pre4-2 (in NEW queue). Following are some changes I believe are
 still remaining. All comments welcome.

 1. debian/control
 Remove unneeded build and runtime dependency libjorbis-java.
 Modify JRE dependencies to openjdk-6-jre | java5-runtime | java6-runtime.
 2. debian/jftp.run
 Remove hard coded path to openjdk java binary. Instead simply use -
 java -jar /usr/share/java/jftp.jar $@

jftp doesn't load with java-gcj and some of the other free JREs. It
only works with sun jre and openjdk jre. Did you try running jftp with
other JREs?

I get this error, when I try to run jftp with java-gcj:

Exception in thread main java.lang.NullPointerException
   at net.sf.jftp.gui.base.StatusPanel.init(StatusPanel.java:79)
   at net.sf.jftp.JFtp.init(JFtp.java:180)
   at net.sf.jftp.JFtp.init(JFtp.java:166)
   at net.sf.jftp.JFtp.main(JFtp.java:574)

I haven't tried debugging into this, but I guess jftp uses some swing
classes which don't work with java-gcj.

 3. debian/manifest.mf
 Remove jorbis.jar and jogg.jar from class path.
 4. debian/rules
 Remove jorbis and jogg from DEB_JARS.

Hmm.. not sure why we added those jars, but yes they can be removed
now. Thanks.

 5. debian/README.debian
 Add to comply with 3.8.0 standards version.

Do you mean README.source? We have a README.Debian-source file and I
think it should be renamed to README.source according to 3.8.0
standards.

Thanks,
Varun

Bug#499580: mayavi2: rendering issues

 wxgtk2.6? BTW, if both the versions exist which one will be used by
 mayavi2?

 You almost definitely have an Intel GMA950 or similar card on your
 machine. There is a known bug in X/the intel driver that causes this.

 See this:

 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16072

Bingo! I have Intel GM965/GL960 graphics card and I get the exact same
error when I run:

$$ MESA_DEBUG=1 python contour.py

$$ Mesa warning: couldn't open libtxc_dxtn.so, software DXTn
compression/decompression unavailable
$$ Mesa warning: glEnable(GL_DEPTH_TEST) but no depth buffer

I am using xserver-xorg-core 1.4.2 and libgl1-mesa-dri 7.0.3. The
versions that seem to fix this problem -- xserver 1.5.0 and
libgl1-mesa-dri 7.1 are both available in debian/experimental, though
I haven't tried them yet.

 from a message by Colin on enthought-dev. It would be great if someone
 with the problem could figure out if this is really a Xserver problem or
 the intel driver problem and try and get this into Debian quickly.

 Also, was some explorer function removed from mayavi2 in the new
 version?

 Not sure. Envisage plugins have changed so the explorer may not be
 exposed in the shell, however, I am not sure where the explorer is in
 the 3.x code base or if it works at all. That was a Pyface/traits
 package that I did not write... :(

Okay, thanks. Should I ask on enthought-dev?

This is just a write permission issue (though I have no idea about
this misleading error message), the offscreen.png file is dumped by
the offscreen.py script. So try to run it some directory where you
have write access (say $HOME) instead of /usr/share/doc/...

 ** Also I am observing major rendering bug (or some feature? :-)), which
 I am not sure I experienced with sid version that badly... screenshot of

 Similar incorrect renders happen in other scripts (numeric_source.py).

 I guess I would need to test on some other box to check if that is not a card

  been fixed in VTK. VTK-5.2 is due soon so this problem will definitely
  be addressed there.

 This is good news!
 I am really looking forward to seeing VTK version 5.2 released and
 packaged for Debian!

 For the time being, I think this bug report should be reassigned to
 package libvtk5/5.0.4-1+b1 (and maybe tagged fixed-upstream?).
 Any objections?

Please do that, I have no objections.

FYI: I have just now uploaded fixed version of mayavi2 and
enthought-traits-ui to Debian with updated range_editor.py and
plot3d_reader.py files.

Varun

 The GNOME menu entries (.desktop files) are wrong. They call the game
 /usr/games/xmaxxx when they are really /usr/games/xaxxx (and the xmaxx
 games are called by xmmaxx)). The attached tar file has correct
 ..desktop files.

No, the desktop files are correct. xpuzzles package ships two binary
packages xpuzzles (plain X version) [1] and xmpuzzles (Motif version)
[2]. In xpuzzles if some game is called x... then the corresponding
game in xmpuzzles is called xm... Please install both the packages and
then I guess you will understand.

 The tar file also adds the PuzzleGame category to the desktop files so
 that the .desktop entries don't all end up stuck under Games when we're
 using submenus (instead under Games|Puzzle and Logic). The games still
 appear under Games in the more usual case of not having submenus.

Putting the menu entries under the PuzzleGame submenu is a good
idea. I will try to fix this in the next version.

Thanks,

Bug#478844: [Python-apps-team] Bug#478844: mayavi2: segfaults or corrupts memory after some operations

Hi Francesco,

 Hi!

 As I commented on bug #478017, I don't see mayavi2 crashing at startup.

 On the other hand, I experience crashes after performing some
 operations.
 Please note that I've just upgraded mayavi2 from version 2.1.1-2 to
 version 2.1.1-2+b1, but I've seen the same issue on last Monday
 with version 2.1.1-2.

 I could reproduce this bug as follows. Let's take (again!) the test
 case I prepared for bug #400406 (see [1] and [2]).

 [1] http://bugs.debian.org/400406
 [2]
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi/vtk-multiblockPLOT3D-bug-test.tar.gz?bug=400406;msg=5;att=1

   list_plot3d.pytiny.xyz
   $ mayavi2  ~/tmp/mayavi2.out 2 ~/tmp/mayavi2.err

 The main window shows up.

  * from menus, select File - Load data - PLOT3D file
  * as XYZ Co-ordinate file, select `tiny.xyz'
  * as Q Solution file, select `tiny.q'
  * select PLOT3D:tiny.xyz, tiny.q in the MayaVi pane
  * in the PLOT3DReader tab (inside the object editor), check Binary
 file, Do not reduce number of outputs, Has byte count, and Multi
 grid; *un*check Force read, I blanking, and Two dimensional
 geometry; select little_endian Byte order
  * in the Reader tab, click on the Update Reader button

 OK, now we are ready to visualize the data...

  * from menus, select Visualize - Modules - Surface (a blue square
 shows up in the TVTK scene)
  * in the MayaVi pane, right-click on PLOT3D:tiny.xyz, tiny.q and
 choose copy from the context menu

 Boom!  Segmentation fault!

 Relevant info in /var/log/kern.log:

   python[7379]: segfault at 2b7915ea1f40 rip 4b46cb rsp 7fffa3e3ccd0 error 7

 File ~/tmp/mayavi2.out is empty:

   $ cat ~/tmp/mayavi2.out

 File ~/tmp/mayavi2.err includes just a (possibly irrelevant) message:

   $ cat ~/tmp/mayavi2.err

   (python:7379): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_colormap: assertion
 `!GTK_WIDGET_REALIZED (widget)' failed

 After this test, I said to myself: OK, let's see if this bug is
 well reproducible.
 Hence, I started the above procedure over again.
 To my surprise, I repeated all the above steps and didn't get a segfault
 at the same point!
 When I chose copy from the context menu, the command was accepted.
 Then I added one more step:

  * in the MayaVi pane, right-click on TVTK Scene 1 in order to choose
 paste from the context menu

 Boom!  Memory corruption!

Strange, I am not able to reproduce this bug also on amd64 machine. I
followed the same steps and I could copy/paste without any errors. If
you don't believe me please see this screenshot:

 Hi!

 I'm unable to read any block, except the first, in multiblock
 PLOT3D files.
 I can reproduce this bug with any multiblock PLOT3D file having more
 than one block. For instance we can consider the test case I prepared
 for bug #400406 (see [1] and [2]).

 [1] http://bugs.debian.org/400406
 [2]
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi/vtk-multiblockPLOT3D-bug-test.tar.gz?bug=400406;msg=5;att=1

 That test case is based on a little PLOT3D grid ('tiny.xyz')
 and solution ('tiny.q'), generated by a simple Fortran program
 ('gen_tinyplot3d.f') on a little-endian machine.
 The PLOT3D grid is composed of 5 blocks, each one of which consists
 of a single cubic cell.

   $ tar xvzf vtk-multiblockPLOT3D-bug-test.tar.gz
   $ ls
   gen_tinyplot3d.f  tiny.qvtk-multiblockPLOT3D-bug-test.tar.gz
   list_plot3d.pytiny.xyz
   $ mayavi2

 The main window shows up.

  * from menus, select File - Load data - PLOT3D file
  * as XYZ Co-ordinate file, select `tiny.xyz'
  * as Q Solution file, select `tiny.q'

  * from menus, select Visualize - Modules - Axes (coordinate ranges
 show up, confirming that we are seeing the first grid block, where
 1 = X = 2)

 OK, back to the PLOT3DReader tab: where's the option to select which
 grid blocks I want to load?!?
 I really cannot find it...

 I would like to have a means to decide which grid blocks will be loaded
 (e.g.: I want to load block 1, 2, and 4, but not the remaining two),
 so that a number of PLOT3D:tiny.xyz, tiny.q objects are automatically
 created, each one corresponding to one of the requested grid blocks
 (e.g.: three objects are created, corresponding to blocks 1, 2, and 4).

 Please note that this decision may be taken only after PLOT3D properties
 (such as Binary file, Has byte count, and so forth) have been
 specified, or otherwise the total number of blocks present in the
 PLOT3D file will not be computed correctly...

Thanks for this detailed report. It looks more like a wishlist
bug. I'm forwarding this upstream.

 I believe the issue is that the script that he is setting afuse to
 invoke is doing something invalid --- afuse does not expect him to be
 calling rmdir on the mount point and then creating a symlink in its
 place. The changes with the new version may indeed prevented his script
 from working, but I don't believe afuse is designed to support it.
 Creating a bind mount should work, though.

Jeremy: Thanks for the info.

Timothy: As Jeremy says, afuse is not designed for this particular

 This might be related to the fact that I upgraded

I can't reproduce this bug. Could you please try upgrading to mayavi2

the default Python version in unstable has been switched to 2.5.

This problem could be related, so please try upgrading mayavi2 and its

 I'm used afuse to mount symlinks into AFS, and just upgraded to version

 to the fact that it unmounts volumes (removes the symlink) immediately
 after creating it each time.

 This seems to be the same issue as
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=470038, but that bug is
 supposed to be fixed in 0.2-2.

Could you please try passing -o timeout=some high value to afuse (as

2008-03-23 Thread Varun Hiremath
Hi,
  I have prepared a QA upload for pyflakes which fixes 2 bugs
  including the ftbfs with python-central RC bug.

  If you want to adopt the package and move the package to PAPT,
  please do so quickly. I can sponsor upload for you.

  Please find attached the debdiff of my changes.

Regards
Varun

 We already had pyflakes injected in the team repository[1]; what I did
 is integrate the Varun's debdiff into such repository, adopting for
 the team (adding we three as uploaders) and few other changes. If
 Tristan has no objections, wa can upload this version, waiting for new
 upstream release.

Great! Thanks for your work. I have uploaded the package.

Cheers,
Varun
