I tried it without LVM. The same thing happened with not being able to
pivot-root and trying to kill init.

Mdadm does not appear to respect multilevel software raid setups. It will
assemble only one level of the raid. I just wanted to mail to let you know
there is more than one person attempting to use the functionality.
