Bug#908467: btrfsmaintenance: Setting idle IO priority via BTRFS_SCRUB_PRIORITY is broken

2018-09-10 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: btrfsmaintenance
Version: 0.4.1-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

BTRFS_SCRUB_PRIORITY="idle" (or not setting it at all) in
/etc/default/btrfsmaintenance should cause
/usr/share/btrfsmaintenance/btrfs-scrub.sh to start scrub
with idle IO priority.

But it starts it with the default IO priority like any other
job.

The reason seems to be that the default value for ioprio
is not set:

Bug#749599: /sbin/lvm: lvconvert --type cache-pool ... complains: WARNING: Unrecognised segment type cache-pool

2014-05-28 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: lvm2
Version: 2.02.106-1
Severity: normal
File: /sbin/lvm

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

testing out/playing with the new LVM cache features

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

1. Created a new PV in /dev/sde1 on a 32GB USB3 stick (/dev/sde)
   using
# gparted /dev/sde

2. Create VG 'cache_vg':
# vgcreate cache_vg /dev/sde1
Volume group cache_vg successfully created

3. Create 2 LVs:
# lvcreate -n Cache_data -L 5G /dev/cache_vg
Logical volume Cache_data created
# lvcreate -n Cache_meta -L 8M /dev/cache_vg
Logical volume Cache_meta created

4. *trying* to convert the 2 LVs to a cache-pool. FAILS:
# lvconvert --type cache-pool --poolmetadata cache_vg/Cache_meta
cache_vg/Cache_data
WARNING: Unrecognised segment type cache-pool

   * What was the outcome of this action?

lvconvert tells me it doesn't know about cache-pool.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Given:
# lvconvert -h | grep -A 7 cache-pool
lvconvert --type cache-pool
[--cachemode CacheMode]
[--chunksize size]
[--poolmetadata CacheMetadataLogicalVolume[Path] |
[--poolmetadatasize size]
[--poolmetadataspare {y|n}]]
CacheDataLogicalVolume[Path]

I expected lvconvert to know 'cache-pool'.

Compiling from source, the test shell/lvcreate-cache.sh also
fails on this.

Bug#744224: Workaround: Padre does not start, aborts with Segfault,

2014-04-29 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: padre
Version: 1.00+dfsg-1
Followup-For: Bug #744224

Dear Maintainer,

in Jessie/Testing the up-to-date libwx-scintilla-perl version
is 0.38-1+b1 with --- which the segfault appears.

I installed version 0.39 from CPAN. Padre works now!

Of course, installing the library to the default
/usr/local/lib/perl/5.18.2
is not quite optimal (Re: upgrades), but works.

http://search.cpan.org/~azawawi/Wx-Scintilla/
says the version 0.39 is from September 2012(!).

Should this bug be reassigned to libwx-scintilla-perl, then?

Thank you,
-Wolfgang Weisselberg

Bug#703897: AgentsClearGPG: dash doesn't do kill -SIGHUP

2013-03-25 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: hibernate
Version: 2.0+15+g88d54a8-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

/usr/sbin/hibernate tries hard to run under dash.

/usr/share/hibernate/scriptlets.d/ssh_and_gpg_agents
uses in ClearGPGAgents:
vecho 2 kill -SIGHUP ${clearagentspid}
kill -SIGHUP ${clearagentspid}
. This works in bash, but doesn't work in dash, which causes
hibernate to abort.

dash, bash and zsh however accept the
kill -s HUP $PID
syntax:

Bug#690004: lyx: letter (g-brief) does NOT depend on europs.sty (which is gone)

2012-10-08 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: lyx
Version: 2.0.3-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Maintainer,

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Opening a lyx-document using g-brief again after not using lyx
for some weeks.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
Got this warning (and the document classes letter
(g-brief) / letter (g-brief2) weren't available:
| Warning: Document class not available
|
| The selected document class
| letter (g-brief)
| requires external files that are not available.
| The document class can still be used, but the
| document cannot be compiled until the following
| prerequisites are installed:
| europs.sty
| See section 3.1.2.2 (Class Availability) of the
| User's Guide for more information.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Opening the file successfully.

* What did you discover?
1. europs.sty is gone from Debian:

(really old apt-file data):
$ apt-file search europs.sty
texlive-fonts-recommended:
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/eurofont/europs.sty
# apt-file update
$ apt-file search europs.sty
$

2. The document still renders OK in lyx. The EUR symbol works.

3. g-brief did depend on europs at one time --- that was changed
   in 2003 (V4.0.1)

See Debian Bug #176153 for the old code, in
http://ctan.unixbrain.com/macros/latex/contrib/g-brief/g-brief.pdf
the documentation for V4.0.1 says europs, marvosym and eurosym
are embedded into g-brief *if installed on the machine*.

* How did you fix it?
Taught lyx the dependency on europs.sty for g-brief/g-brief2
isn't necessary any more:

Bug#557832: lyx: When deleting (w/backspace) the last line, the cursor jumps too high

2009-11-24 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: lyx
Version: 1.6.4-1
Severity: normal

How to reproduce:
- Create a new document.
- Fill it with fill text, so that the LyX text window is
  full.
- Go to the end of the last line.
- Start backspacing characters.

At one point during the backspacing the rest of the last line will
be folded into the preceeding line. The space of the last line
disappears. However, the cursor is placed not at the end of the
now new last line, but at the begin of the last-but-one line ---
the next backspace deletes a character from the last-but-two line!

e.g. If this is the LyX entry window, showing the end of the text,
and the window is full and has more lines above the top, with
'' representing the cursor:
   +-+
   | na, oa sanga fassë rimpë rac. |
   | Pendë cenvéla mittanya sú oio, |
   | ma lir venë rimpë, sí liéva |
   | hísië onóro ata. Coa cíla píca |
   | lauta at. Sundo tulma cu nót, |
   | ran ilma vairë linwelë ai, |
   | norta  |
   +-+
then pressing backspace once yields this:
   +-+
   | Ehtë tareldar tanwëataquë nat |
   | na, oa sanga fassë rimpë rac. |
   | Pendë cenvéla mittanya sú oio, |
   | ma lir venë rimpë, sí liéva |
   | hísië onóro ata. Coa cíla píca |
   |lauta at. Sundo tulma cu nót, |
   | ran ilma vairë linwelë ai, nort |
   +-+
where the cursor '' is in front of lauta instead behind nort.

Looking at proc.cpp, Procinfo::read_common ():
char buf[4096 + 1]
...
strcpy(path, PROCDIR);
strcat(path, /stat); // /proc/stat
if((n = read_file(path, buf, sizeof(buf) - 1)) = 0) return;
...
p = strstr(buf, btime) + 6;
sscanf(p, %lu, boot_time);
and
$ wc -c /proc/stat
8980 /proc/stat
it becomes clear that /proc/stat may be too large for buf.
$ less /proc/stat
clearly shows that 'btime' is almost at the end and 'intr' is
very large: p must be NULL. (A NULL check should be added.)

proc.ccp is generated, in this case, from proc_linux.cpp.

Increasing the size of buf allows qps to parse the boot time
again and fixes the segfault for now.

Bug#471240: /usr/sbin/amstatus: amstatus: Illegal division by zero at /usr/sbin/amstatus line 75.

Package: amanda-common
Version: 1:2.5.2p1-1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/sbin/amstatus
Tags: patch

amstatus contains an error in it's error output for non-existing
configurations.

How to reproduce:
-
Assuming that /etc/amanda/whatever does not exist
# amstatus whatever
Argument whatever isn't numeric in division (/) at /usr/sbin/amstatus
line 75.
Argument /etc/amanda isn't numeric in division (/) at /usr/sbin/amstatus
line 75.
Illegal division by zero at /usr/sbin/amstatus line 75.

The error:

Line 75:
print Configuration directory ' . $confdir/$conf . ' doesn't exist\n;

This is a division of $confdir and $conf, but that's not what
was wanted. (The same error is on line 79.)

Fix:
---
$confdir/$conf is trusted in the rest of the program, so we
can simply fold them back into the doublequote:

Bug#455545: par2 c x.PAR 2067 files @ 25MB: Block count is too small.

2007-12-10 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: par2
Version: 0.4-9
Severity: normal

$ par2 c /tmp/xx 2067 files @ 25MB each
par2cmdline version 0.4, Copyright (C) 2003 Peter Brian Clements.
[... GNU header ...]
Block count is too small.
$

The solution is to try -bSIZE.

In this case -b1600 was still too small, but -b3200 worked.

I would like one of the following solutions, from most preferred
to least:

a) make par2 work with any blocksize.

b) change default behavior: automatically increase the block size
   until a working size is found and use that (with a warning).
   Just doubling the size on each try should suffice.

c) add a command line switch that allows par2 to change the
   behavior to the one in b).

d) Expand Block count is too small. to Block count is too small.
   Try -b$working_block_count.
   Use a specific error code so scripts can detect this situation
   easier.

e) Expand Block count is too small. to Block count is too small.
   Try -bNUMBER where NUMBER  $current_block_count.
   Use a specific error code so scripts can detect this situation
   easier.

 No, not really.

Maybe my irony meter is out of kilter --- I merely wanted to

* SQLITE_BUSY error in a transaction without rollback can corrupt

  strongly recommended (says http://www.hwaci.com/sw/sqlite/).

* Auto-vacuum or incremental-vacuum + large UPDATE + CREATE TABLE
  or CREATE INDEX + UPDATE with malloc-failure causing a rollback
  = database corruption. Introduced in 3.1.0, fixed in 3.4.0,

so the mismatch is, ah, not critical in this case.

Actually, that critical error seems quite common:

One in 2.5 files giving that error ... but none of them actually
giving the wrong answer. Looks spurious to me.

It seems to me that rc-map, only used in read-adaptive.c (in
conjunction with rc02), is not initialized here. Since other
places take care to check for that, my guess is that simply a
if(rc-map) is missing. That at least stops the segfault and
--adaptive-read seems to work; however I am not competent enough to
know whether that might cause other problems, especially regarding
to ecc use.

Bug#415892: espeak: produces incorrect length in wav headers

2007-03-22 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: espeak
Version: 1.19-2
Severity: normal

Test case where espeak reports too short playtime in the header:

$ echo 1940 05 03 Success Story |
espeak -a 18 -p 70 -m --stdin --stdout  /tmp/wav.wav
$ play /tmp/wav.wav
[...]
Time: 00:02.83 [00:00.00] of 00:01.49 ( 190.4%) Output Buffer: 135.73K
        ^

Test case where espeak reports an incredible long wav in the
wav header:

$ echo 1940 05 03 Success Story |
espeak -a 18 -m --stdin --stdout  /tmp/wav.wav
$ play /tmp/wav.wav
[...]
Time: 00:02.84 [1622:13.73] of 1622:16.56 (  0.0%) Output Buffer: 136.06Kplay
wav: Premature EOF on .wav input file
   ^^

Too short a time causes lame, for example, not to encode the
whole file, too long causes spurious warnings.

Workaround:
$ sox /tmp/wav.wav /tmp/wav2.wav

Bug#357332: initramfs-tools: Doesn't boot from /dev/hdb1 (minor = 0x10) (patch)

2006-03-16 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.55b
Severity: important

Symptoms:
-
- System doesn't boot, complaining
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init
  (or wherever you init is supposed to be)
- / (the root-fs) is on e.g. /dev/hdb1
  or any other partition where the minor is = 0x10

Reason:
---
Bug in parse_numeric() in
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/functions
when matching the last option, *).

The code in question is:
minor=$((0x${1#??}))
major=$((0x${1%??}))
If given 301 (/dev/hda1), the bug doen't manifest, but on 341
(/dev/hdb1) $minor will mistakenly return 1 instead of 65 ---
there's just one '?' too many there.

Bug#345564: kimdaba: Adding new category/Person/... will not preserve case of first letter

2006-01-01 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: kimdaba
Version: 2.1-1+b1
Severity: minor

To reproduce:

Assume you have a person (or person category) called
externals, and no other persons starting with e or E.

Try to add a new person Emil, which is not already in
Persons:

  typing the letter shows on screen:
Shift-E = externals
m   = em
i   = emi
l   = emil

What I expected to happen:
=
  typing the letter SHOULD show on screen:
Shift-E = externals
m   = Em
i   = Emi
l   = Emil

Why?  Because I typed Shift-E, not e.  I did that for a
purpose. :-)

Workaround:

use the cursor and correct the e to E.

Bug#342532: fl-cow: does not work, assuming it to work can cause data loss

2005-12-08 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: fl-cow
Version: 0.6-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I cannot get fl-cow to COW at all. Maybe I am stupid, but I
don't see what I did wrong.

According to
/usr/share/doc/fl-cow/README lines
I need to
export FLCOW_PATH=...
and
export LD_PRELOAD=$LD_PRELOAD:/usr/lib/libflcow.so
to have [t]he preload library perform Copy On Write on
files having hard links.

$ cd /tmp
$ mkdir FLCOW-test
$ export FLCOW_PATH=/tmp/FLCOW-test
# export FLCOW_PATH=/tmp/FLCOW-test/ has the same result
#  ^
$ export LD_PRELOAD=$LD_PRELOAD:/usr/lib/libflcow.so
$ cd FLCOW-test
$ echo one  1
$ cp -l 1 2
$ ls -l 1 2
-rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 4 2005-12-08 12:06 1
-rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 4 2005-12-08 12:06 2
$ ls -li 1 2
81922 -rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 4 2005-12-08 12:06 1
81922 -rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 4 2005-12-08 12:06 2

Ok, the files 1 and 2 are obviously hard linked, thus COW
should cause changes to one not to affect the other one, right?

$ echo two  2
$ echo one-one-one  1
$ ls -l 1 2
-rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 12 2005-12-08 12:08 1
-rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 12 2005-12-08 12:08 2
$ ls -li 1 2
81922 -rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 12 2005-12-08 12:08 1
81922 -rw-r--r-- 2 weissel weissel 12 2005-12-08 12:08 2
$ cat 1
one-one-one
$ cat 2
one-one-one

Uh, I expected them to be 2 files (2 different inodes) now,
with cat 2 = two. Data loss happened!

$ echo $LD_PRELOAD
:/usr/lib/libflcow.so
$ ls -la /usr/lib/libflcow.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5612 2005-10-21 02:21 /usr/lib/libflcow.so
$ echo $FLCOW_PATH
/tmp/FLCOW-test
$ pwd
/tmp/FLCOW-test

fl-cow also provides the wrapper cow for a single command.
It doesn't work either.
$ cow echo TWO2  2
$ cat 1 2
TWO2
TWO2

By comparison, cow-shell from package cowdancer works:
$ cow-shell
Invoking /bin/bash
$ echo 1  1
$ cat 1 2
1
TWO2

[... reproducing information]
 Only once its loaded. You need to start a new shell to get the library
 preloaded into your process.

Ah, yes, *that* was my thinko. You're right, after starting a
new shell it works as advertised. Maybe a line should be dropped
into the docu?

  fl-cow also provides the wrapper cow for a single command.
  It doesn't work either.

 The cow script does not have tests, I'll add some and check its behaviour.

Once the cow script works without starting a new shell (or spits
out a fatal error), feel free to drop the severity to minor and/or
close the bug.

In that case, shouldn'd these new versions of lvm2 and

they are not compatible as they are right now?

Bug#341452: lvm2: v2.02.00-1: breaks VGs: device-mapper ioctl cmd 9 failed: Invalid argument

2005-11-30 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: lvm2
Version: 2.02.00-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Problem description:
---
After upgrading to lvm2 2.02.00-1 and the required
libdevmapper1.02, the system was unable to complete booting,
as no LVs were reachable: the system was unusable and could not
be used to fix itself.
(The metadata is in lvm2 format.)

vgscan worked OK.
vgchange -a y was broken, spewing lots of:
device-mapper: one of name or uuid must be supplied, cmd(9)
  device-mapper ioctl cmd 9 failed: Invalid argument
and finally claiming
 18 logical volume(s) in volume group base_vg now active
However, they were not accessible and the boot process was
unable to finish.

vgchange -a n also failed:
device-mapper: one of name or uuid must be supplied, cmd(11)
  device-mapper ioctl cmd 11 failed: Invalid argument
  _deps: task run failed for (254:0)
  Failed to add device (254:0) to dtree
device-mapper: one of name or uuid must be supplied, cmd(11)
  device-mapper ioctl cmd 11 failed: Invalid argument
  _deps: task run failed for (254:1)
  Failed to add device (254:1) to dtree
...

dmsetup ls was OK.
dmsetup table showed only:
base_vg-usr:
base_vg-var:
...
i.e. the names were known, but the tables were missing.

Solution:

After downgrading to lvm2 2.01.14-3 (and thus libdevmapper1.02)
the system worked again.

To archive this, a rescue system was needed, as /usr/ (apt-get)
and /var/ (apt/sources.list) etc. were all unreachable.

Note:

I am not 100% sure if it is libdevmapper1.02 or lvm2, however,
lvm2 Version 2.01.14-3 works with:
rm /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.01
ln -s /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.02 /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.01
Thus the problem probably is within lvm2 v2.02.00-1.

Bug#316512: mutt: send2-hook broken: does not effect first matching message

2005-08-22 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Hi, Alain!

Alain Bench wrote 31 lines:

 Hello Wolfgang, thank you for the precise report.

You are welcome.

  On Friday, July 1, 2005 at 3:30:26 PM +0200, Wolfgang Weisselberg wrote:

 | send2-hook . 'my_hdr From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]'
  observe: From IS NOT SET!

 That is not a bug, things are designed like that. At the time
 send2-hooks are triggered, the sender of the currently composed mail is
 already fixed. It's too late for changing sender via $from, via
 $reverse_name, or even via my_hdr From:. In fact it's too late for any
 my_hdr.

Hmmm.  Let me see ...
- At the time send2-hook is triggered, the sender is fixed,
  no way (except edit-from) to change it. Ok.

- The manual (via F1) says:
  | send2-hook is matched every time a message is changed, either by
  | editing it, or by using the compose menu to change its recipients or
  | subject. send2-hook is executed after send-hook, and can, e.g., be
  | used to set parameters such as the ``$sendmail'' variable depending on
  | the message's sender address.
  which seems true, according to my observation.

  That looks like the manual schould mention edit-from:
However, you cannot set From: with send2-hook except using 'send2-hook .
push edit-fromkill-line[EMAIL PROTECTED]Enter', since
send2-hook runs too late for any other method.

  Otherwise a reader might get the impression that the main
  difference between send2-hook (is matched every time a message
  is changed) and send-hook ([is] only executed ONCE after
  getting the initial list of recipients) is how often it's
  executed. That at least was my motivation for using send2-hook:
  have From automatically updated if I change recipients.

- Yet something *does* happen, for on the next try (recipient2)
  send2-hook *does* set the recipient. Even though that is a
  completely new mail, the old one being aborted. Is that really
  the correct behaviour? To me it looks like data leaking
  from one mail to another ...

 The only way a send2-hook has to change the sender is via
 pushing edit-from:

 | send2-hook . push edit-fromkill-line[EMAIL PROTECTED]Enter

 The advantage in return is that a send2-hook pattern can depend on
 the sender.

Depend on the sender to be what Unchanged by my_hdr From:
directives, as put into the mail header by the writer, as
more-or-less immutable, even if you should run extensive commands
in send2-hook?

It probably is obvious to you, to me it's not, and maybe it
should be documented.

-Wolfgang

Bug#316512: mutt: send2-hook broken: does not effect first matching message

2005-07-01 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.9-2
Severity: normal

To reproduce:

send-hook works as expected:
$ echo send-hook  . 'my_hdr From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]'  .muttrc.bug
$ mutt -F .muttrc.bug
m   # start new mail
recipient   # To:
whatever# Subject:
# exit editor
# observe: From is set as (your name) [EMAIL PROTECTED].
#  Everything's fine!
q   # abort mail
n # do not postpone mail
q   # exit mutt.

send2-hook doesn't:
$ echo send2-hook  . 'my_hdr From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]'  .muttrc.bug
$ mutt -F .muttrc.bug
m   # start new mail
recipient   # To:
whatever# Subject:
# exit editor
# observe: From IS NOT SET!
q   # abort mail
n # do not postpone mail

m   # start new mail
recipient2  # To:
whatever2   # Subject:
# exit editor
# observe: From now IS set as expected ... on the second try!
q   # abort mail
n # do not postpone mail
q   # exit mutt.

However, send2-hook *is* being executed (at least) before and
after the editor is run --- as would be expected.

$ echo send2-hook  . 'running send2-hook now'  .muttrc.bug
$ mutt -F .muttrc.bug
m   # start new mail
recipient   # To:
whatever# Subject:
# Observe note flash by for running: unknown command
# exit editor
# Observe note flash by for running: unknown command
q   # abort mail
n # do not postpone mail
q   # exit mutt.

Thus while the hook is being run, it does not take effect,
not at first ...

Bug#307918: gimp: Save as: (JPEG) exif data not always saved with Preview enabled + workaround

2005-05-06 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: gimp
Version: 2.2.6-1
Severity: normal

save as does not always save exif data under specific
circumstances.  To reproduce:

- Load an jpeg with exif data.
- CTRL-Shift-S (save-as).
= Save Image dialog:
- Rename the JPEG as needed.
- Press save.
= Save as JPEG dialog
- Make sure Show Previw image in window is selected.
- Open Advanced Options foldout.
- Note the file size in the dialog.
- De-Select Save EXIF data[1]
- Watch the file size shrink ca 10k.
- Re-Select Save EXIF data
- Observe how the file size does NOT grow!
- Press OK
- Observe that the saved image does not contain any EXIF data (e.g. by using
gqview).

The bug does not appear if Show Previw image in window is
not ON whenever Save EXIF data is deselected. But even a
sequence of:
 - Show Previw image in window OFF
 - Save EXIF data OFF
 - Show Previw image in window ON
 - Show Previw image in window OFF
 - Save EXIF data ON
stops the saving of EXIF data!

Workaround:
==
- Press CTRL-Shift-S or select save as from the menu
- continue to Save as JPEG/Advanced Options
- set Save EXIF data ON
- cancel (Save EXIF data on will now be the default)
- Use save as again.
- either switch off the Show Previw image in window or do not
  switch Save EXIF data OFF unless you want no EXIF data saved.

-Wolfgang Weisselberg

PS: Please do CC a copy to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) if
you want me to react to your mail, it seems the bug tracking
system does not do so reliably (which may be my fault). :-(

[1] if not selected, select it, cancel the save and start
over at CTRL-Shift-S --- it'll be selected next time.
Or select it now and observe the filesize not grow and no
EXIF data being saved ...

Bug#302099: rdiff-backup: New version 0.13.6 contains a *** Serious bug fix ****, please update

2005-04-08 Thread Wolfgang Weisselberg
Package: rdiff-backup

Followup-For: Bug #302099

Changelog says (amongst others):

| ** Serious bug fix **
| If a directory in the source directory was replaced by certain
| symlinks, then if later backups failed they could cause files in the
| directory that the symlink pointed to to be deleted! Much thanks to

This should warrant an update as data loss looms, shouldn't it?
