That wouldn't be in line with the other variables that are commented out
by default.

Additionally, if the variable is always set the checks must be changed
slightly, otherwise the script would always error out.

Will do so in a separate bug, if I do ever get around to it.

BTW, U_BOOT_FDT_DIR is not documented in the manpage (there is a pull
request in the upstream github repo that appears to address this) and
shellcheck has some recommendations.

Would you take patches for these as well?

Kind regards,

Subject: [PATCH] Add option to append one or more custom entries from an
 external file

This patch adds a new option U_BOOT_CUSTOM_ENTRIES to specify an
external file to be appended to extlinux.conf.

default:
Add the new option commented out, with the default value.

u-boot-update:
Do some basic checks on the file (exists, regular file, readable,
non-zero length).
Issue a warning in case the file is not owned by root, but don't
error out (the sysadmin may have good reasons for that).

u-boot-update.8:
Document the new option in the manpage, including some safety/security
warnings.

U_BOOT_CUSTOM_ENTRIES is always set

Oh, didn't think about it being a conffile, so yes, I agree.

Let me rephrase that.

As I see it, the custom entries are potentially dangerous (unbootable
system, security, etc.) so it made sense for me to have them under
several "layers" of "protection". I was suggesting that instead of
having it enabled by default in the configuration to provide the admin
with additional switches for "common" customizations[1], that might make
it unnecessary to use this bigger hammer at all.

Of course, as you mentioned above, with /etc/default/u-boot being a
conffile this tends to make the admin's life harder than it should.

I'll rework the patch accordingly, probably sometimes this week.

[1] Not sure how common it is, but my motivation for this was to have an
entry with a different root file system that is not overwritten on every
update, hence my example above. I might come up with a patch
implementing U_BOOT_ALT_ROOT as well, if I don't have anything better to
do ;)

Kind regards,
Andrei

After thinking about this for a while it seems to me like the custom
entries are a solution of last resort and should not be activated by
default.

For me it would make more sense to add some more variables to generate
different entries, e.g. something like U_BOOT_ALT_ROOT (alternative root
file system for which to generate entries).

Subject: [PATCH] Add option to append one or more custom entries from an
 external file

This patch adds a new option U_BOOT_CUSTOM_ENTRIES to specify an
external file to be appended to extlinux.conf.

default:
Add the new option commented out, with a suggested filename.

u-boot-update:
Do some basic checks on the file (exists, regular file, readable,
non-zero length).
Issue a warning in case the file is not owned by root, but don't
error out (the sysadmin may have good reasons for that).

u-boot-update.8:
Document the new option in the manpage, including some safety/security
warnings.

Based on the name I'm guessing this is not A64 specific, so retitling

Hi William,

Please note I'm not a maintainer, but just someone looking after bugs
filed against inexistent packages (in this case just a typo).

You might want to write to @bugs.debian.org instead.

fails also with the testing installer (using 5.2.0-2-amd64).

The file /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head in Debian stretch looks like
this:

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN

You can verify that yourself by downloading the package from a Debian
mirror and inspecting it, e.g. with mc.

It seems like your issue is due to a Raspbian and/or image specific
customization.

Hope this helps,
Andrei

I would be willing to test binary packages, preferably installable on
buster/stable, but could also install bullseye/testing or sid if needed.

I'm already running linux 5.2 from sid.

Apparently this bug was left behind when libxine1 (src:xine-lib) was
removed, however, my understanding of the bug log is that it belonged to
xine-ui anyway (or possibly xdg-screensaver).

Reassigning accordingly.

Considering its age it would make sense to test if still applicable and
deal with it accordingly.

Never mind, the version suggests this was intended for dhcpd5 in jessie.

Reproducing this with newer version of dhcpcd5 would still be useful

The gnome-desktop-environment meta-package doesn't exist anymore, so
this bug is currently not assigned to any package.

If my understanding is correct your suggestion for a note in
README.Debian applies to libnss-mdns, so I'm reassigning accordingly.

A (quick) look at interfaces(5) doesn't reveal any specific method to
create dummy or bond interfaces.

In order to keep things within one configuration file it would make
sense to use a pre-up with ip commands as suggested above.

Would this work *without* overriding the systemd.conf file?

Would you have background information on why this is done?
What would be the impact on local configuration (networking unusable,
degraded, etc.)?
