Bug#1042932: ksshaskpass: Error message from ksshaskpass: QSocketNotifier: Can only be used with threads started with QThread

2023-08-02 Thread Chris Hanson
Package: ksshaskpass
Version: 4:5.27.5-2
Severity: minor
X-Debbugs-Cc: c...@chris-hanson.org

Dear Maintainer,

This has been happening since I installed Debian shortly after the
release. I believe it's caused by ksshaskpass and not ssh because the
message goes away when the key is added to the ssh key agent.

I haven't tested this with a different askpass program but I think
it's pretty obvious that this is a qt/kde issue.

FWIW I'm running KDE on Wayland.

Please let me know if you need any other info.

Chris

Bug#1021330: nvidia-cuda-dev appears to break nvidia xorg

2023-03-22 Thread Tim Hanson
Hi Andreas,

Yes, so far as i can tell, this was resolved with the inclusion of 525
drivers.

Bug#1021330: nvidia-cuda-dev appears to break nvidia xorg

2022-10-05 Thread Timothy Hanson
Package: nvidia-cuda-dev
Version: 11.5.2-2
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: sidesk...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

Today ran apt-get upgrade, including updating nvidia-cuda-dev. The update
seems to have broken nvidia xorg driver; proximal reason seemsto be that it
pulls in nvidia-tesla-alternative nvidia-tesla-kernel-dkms libnvidia-tesla-
cuda1 (and others) which are a conflicting version (510.85.x). Video driver
is:
ii nvidia-kernel-dkms 470.141.03-2
amd64NVIDIA binary kernel module DKMS source

Removal of nvidia-cuda-dev, installation from the .run file from Nvidia website
directly, seems to resolve the issue.

I may have mis-configured something, but to my limited knowledge it might be a
package problem.

thank you for the maintenance of these packages.

Cheers,
Tim

Bug#976605: nvidia-cuda-dev 11.1 in 'testing' works with nvidia-driver 455.45 ; 'testing' has driver v 450.x

2020-12-05 Thread Timothy Hanson
Package: nvidia-cuda-dev

Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: sidesk...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

You likely laready know this, but the version of nvidia-cuda-dev in testing
needs nvidia driver > 455.xx ; I've installed 455.45 from experimental, and
verified that cuda is working properly.

If the 450.xx driver from testing is installed, cuda applications fail with
cudaError_t 999 'cudaErrorUnknown' (which is confusing)

Thanks for all you hardwork here. First time poster, longtime fan etc.

Bug#896806: The user isn't presented with the Google Terms

2018-04-24 Thread Martin Hanson
Also when systemd-resolved is running with the Google fallback DNS servers, the
user has not been presented with the Google Term of Service license beforehand.
This is something that the Google terms requires. Simply plugging in Google DNS
servers without being presented with the terms of usage is a serious legal
matter that needs to be handled correctly.

Bug#896806: You have closed this on completely wrong understanding of the legal implications!

2018-04-24 Thread Martin Hanson
I'm sorry but you're wrong and you need to reopen this!

We're dealing with a legal issue very different from the example you provided
and these situations are completely different. As soon as the hard coded Google
DNS servers kicks in, the Google Term of Service MUST be accepted, this is not
something the user chooses to do in case of a bug in the application or a
misconfiguration.

Please forward this to the people in Debian capable of dealing with serious
legal issues as this clearly is something you lack the necessary knowledge to
deal with!

This bug report MUST not be closed just like that as this is a major problem
that needs to be solved!

Bug#896806: systemd-resolved violates The Debian Free Software Guidelines

2018-04-24 Thread Martin Hanson
Package: systemd
Version: 232-25

The systemd-resolved violates the Debian Free Software Guidelines due to the
hardcoded the Google DNS servers into the source code of the application.

Line 894 in:
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/e16cb2e4efaba83f47da8355adc65fd83bbe8327/configure.ac

The first violation is the "Distribution of License" which states: "The rights
attached to the program must apply to all to whom the program is redistributed
without the need for execution of an additional license by those parties."

This is violated as Google demands the acceptance of their proprietary license,
Google Terms of Service, which is an additional license:
https://policies.google.com/terms

The second violation is the "License Must Not Contaminate Other Software" part,
which state: "The license must not place restrictions on other software that is
distributed along with the licensed software." This is also violated due to the
need to accept the Google Terms of Service.

When the resolved application is run without a configuration overwriting the
default and it defaults to the hardcoded DNS fall backs, the user MUST accept
the Google Term of Service as is required by Google.

The hardcoded Google DNS fallback servers kicks in when:

1. You do not have DNS set up via DHCP
2. You do not have DNS set up via /etc/resolv.conf
3. You are using systemd-resolved for internal DNS resolution
4. You have not configured systemd-resolved with a different policy for when no
discoverable DNS is available and /etc/resolv.conf contains nothing or invalid
entries.

Unless all four conditions are true, the default Google DNS servers are not
used.

However, there is a GREAT risk of a compromise of user privacy rights if the
application has a bug that result in the hardcoded values taking preference
even though one of the four conditions are met! This is not something easily
detected and which pose a great risk to people such as journalists and other
who might be using a VPN connection. Also the default hardcoded settings could
result in a DNS leakage if configured wrongly by mistake.

Debian has no associations or partnership with the American company Google.
Running with Google DNS servers hardcoded into the Debian code is deeply
problematic as the company is not only know for violating peoples privacy, but
also because NSA has infiltrated Googles data centers are revealed by the
Snowden documents:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/nsa-infiltrates-links-to-yahoo-google-data-centers-worldwide-snowden-documents-say/2013/10/30/e51d661e-4166-11e3-8b74-d89d714ca4dd_story.html

Debian must not associate itself with a proprietary company like Google this
way as it clearly violates the Debian license.

If hardcoded defaults really are needed by Debian, which shouldn't be the case
as this is mostly only relevant for embedded systems without configuration
files, then we need an alternative to a proprietary American company.
Preferably Debian running its own DNS servers!

I recommend that systemd-resolved gets patched so that the hardcoded DNS
servers from Google are removed. If seriously needed, an alternative truly
"free" solution must be used instead.

An alternative solution is to remove systemd-resolved from the main system and
moved into the non-free section.

Kind regards

Bug#886441: DKIMproxy does not respect key location

2018-01-05 Thread Martin Hanson
Package: dkimproxy
Version: 1.4.1-3
Debian Stretch

In /etc/dkimproxy/dkimproxy_out.conf

# specify location of the private key
keyfile /etc/mail/dkim/private.key

Yet, dkimproxy looks for the key in: /var/lib/dkimproxy/private.key

>From the log:

dkimproxy.out[1166]: signing error: Error: cannot read
/var/lib/dkimproxy/private.key: Permission denied

I then copied the key from /etc/mail/dkim to /var/lib/dkimproxy and changed the
permissions and DKIMproxy signs the key.

No matter what I do the "keyfile" option is ignored.

Kind regards

Bug#885288: Follow-up

2017-12-26 Thread Martin Hanson
As a follow-up. On OpenBSD the password scheme that gets generated is blowfish
whereas it is sha-512 on Debian.

Both work on OpenSMTPD.

I have tested the same setup on Arch Linux using the latest table-passwd from
AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/opensmtpd-table-passwd/

It works on Arch.

Bug#885314: SystemD fails to report fatal table-proc on OpenSMTPD

2017-12-25 Thread Martin Hanson
Package: opensmtpd
Version: 6.0.2p1-2

When OpenSMTPD fails to parse a table passwd file it responds with a fatal
error:

This is done manually:

# smtpd -vvvd -f /etc/smtpd.conf

warn: parent -> lka: pipe closed

If you try to start OpenSMTPD with SystemD, using the same configuration, it
starts and doesn't report any problems:

Bug#885288: OpenSMTPD cannot read passwd file: table-passwd: invalid entry

2017-12-25 Thread Martin Hanson
Package: opensmtpd-extras
Version: 5.7.1-3

I have installed opensmtpd and opensmtpd-extras on a fresh Debian Strech
installation.

I have generated a password using the command:

# smtpctl encrypt

This is my OpenSMTPD configuration file:

---
# cat /etc/smtpd.conf
# This is the smtpd server system-wide configuration file.
# See smtpd.conf(5) for more information.

# The pki setup.
pki serv1.example.com certificate "/etc/ssl/serv1.example.com.crt"
pki serv1.example.com key "/etc/ssl/private/serv1.example.com.key"

# Tables used for domains, users, passwords and aliases.
table aliases file:/etc/mail/aliases
table domains file:/etc/mail/domains
table passwd passwd:/etc/mail/passwd
table virtuals file:/etc/mail/virtuals

# Ports to listen on.

listen on enp0s3 port 25 tls pki serv1.example.com
listen on enp0s3 port 587 tls-require pki serv1.example.com auth

# Allow virtual domains.
accept from any for domain virtual deliver to lmtp
"/var/run/dovecot/lmtp" rcpt-to
# Allow outgoing emails.
accept from local for any relay
---

Now, I have tried several different setups in the password file, but no matter
what I do OpenSMTPD cannot read the file:

---
# smtpd -vvvd -f /etc/smtpd.conf
...
warn: table-passwd: invalid entry
warn: table-passwd: error parsing config file
warn: table-proc: imsg_read: Connection reset by peer
fatal: table-proc: exiting
warn: parent -> lka: pipe closed
---

I have a running OpenBSD 6.2 server where I have copied the passwd file to
Debian and tried with that, but I get the same error.

On my OpenBSD box the passwd file looks like this (following the exact example
from the OpenSMTPD FAQ) and it's working on OpenBSD:

---
f...@example.com:$2b$10$iziy9n1wNjlcJ5Bf4wcd2OO3Mr8ssAIt/JZUmn9E6EdK2KMHlMfB6:
---

On Debian, using the same command to create the password creates another kind
of string generated, but neither works anyway:

---
f...@example.com:$6$8PfdjgX6RXPbB7CB$NeSd4vYBXqj6SYIG3ke6RW2VlktZk4rdBWdx8o8dn7qx7ZKXliYoa/eRL7vUuo.Ayc8iBhQUYegx6sBFiY0Ht0:

I have tried with various settings like (password has been shortened):

I suspect something is wrong with the table-passwd filter?

Bug#867564: rescue: Call to search-path fails as it is not in $CHROOT_PATH

2017-07-07 Thread Tom Hanson
Package: rescue
Version: 1.64
Tags: patch
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
Trying to recover a debian machine using rescue, after mounting the
target disk, trying to open a shell in the target
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Informed no shell could be found (or dropped to a shell, but not bash)

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Correctlly end up in a shell with bash

In the chroot_has function, the PATH variable is set to $CHROOT_PATH which does
not contain the script search-path (as this only exists in the installer env).
Therefore this call fails.

Changing this to the absolute path resolves the issue

Bug#863641: 4.9.0-3-amd64: bcm43235 wireless adapter crashes usb hub at the kernel level. when hub crashes can't detect more usb devices. confirmed on more than one computer running same kernel.

2017-05-29 Thread Mark Hanson
Package: 4.9.0-3-amd64
Version: debian stretch latest kernel release
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
Inserting usb wireless adapter BCM43235 into usb ports crashes kernel usb hub.
when adapter is taken out it is still listed when lsusb is executed.
reinsertion and removal several times crashes the usb hub at the kernel level
and no more usb devices work. Have confirmed on several computers using the
same kernel (latest release in stretch 64 bit.) Wireless adapter works on
other kernel versions.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Wireless mouse and primary usb adapter were already plugged in and working.
Other wireless cards when plugged in could not be read after hub crash.

Causes the following system errors as seen in log:

Please note that the package wasn't removed because it was out of date,
but due to uncertainy around its licensing; refer to Bug#771102 and
Bug#821237 for more info. I believe that uncertainty will need to be
resolved before abduco can be included in Debian again.

I am running with a clean and new Jessie installation, no multimedia repos and
I get the exact same error.

I tried installing and running pitivi on another box that runs Debian Stretch,
same exact error, also no multimedia repo.

Bug#821237: abduco: should it be removed from Debian?

2016-04-16 Thread Evan Hanson
Hi Mattia,

Thanks for the nudge. When #771102 was raised, I tried to contact
upstream regarding the potential licensing issues but received no
response, and there the bug sat. It's now been quite some time, however,
and I agree something should be done.

I'll make one more attempt to bring the issue to the developer's
attention, but failing a response and positive resolution I agree that
the package should be be removed.

I thought as much, but none the less, I can run Minecraft on the desktop with
only the headless package installed:

$ dpkg -l | grep openjdk
ii openjdk-8-jre-headless:amd64 8u66-b01-1~bpo8+1

This package is from Jessie backports and everything works. If I install the
package from Testing then it doesn't work. I also tried installing both
headless and the normal jre package, but the problem persist, until I remove
both packages, install the Jessie backport and put it on hold.

Sometimes it doesn't give the above error, but this one instead, then Java

Package: guake

The F12 key opens Guake, but pressing it again doesn't close Guake.

Changing the key doesn't resolve the problem.

Bug#774666: Mutt segfaults when no encryption key exists

2015-01-05 Thread Martin Hanson
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.23

When Mutt is set to encrypt emails by default, yet no key exists for a
particular recipient, Mutt enters the lists of keys that is imported in
GnuPG, when you press q for quit, to get out of that menu, Mutt
always segfaults.

It is quite easy to repricate the problem as it happends all the time.

So if no key exist, pressing q for quit, segfaults Mutt.

Bug#760607: dvtm: Current version (0.6) is years out of date with upstream

2014-09-05 Thread Evan Hanson
Package: dvtm

The upstream version for this software is currently 0.12, released
earlier this year, whereas the currently packaged version is 0.6,
released mid-2010. Versions = 0.7 include several features I want to
use, and the upstream developer has expressed a desire to see this on
the project ML[1] and privately, as well.

Indeed. This was the closest thing to a long description I could find

2014-07-17 Thread Evan Hanson

Description : abduco provides session management, allowing programs to be

That is, programs can be detached - run in the background - and then
later reattached. Together with dvtm it provides a simpler and cleaner
alternative to tmux or screen.

abduco is in many ways very similar to dtach but is actively maintained,
contains no legacy code, provides a few additional features, has a
cleaner, more robust implementation and is distributed under the ISC
license.

I use this program and find it a nice alternative to the others
mentioned. I will maintain it, but will need a sponsor.

Bug#661887: mxml: Bad control character error when attempting to load banks

2012-06-12 Thread David Hanson

Message from upstream maintainer (SourceForge):

Comment By: Mark McCurry (fundamental)
Date: 2012-06-11 08:18

Message:
As suspected, this bug report is out of date.
While the version of zyn that debian testing ships with has this bug, this
bug does not exist in the git head and thus it does not need to be
patched.
As I stated before there should be a release fairly soon, and I have tested
this version on a fresh debian weezy install (32 bit if relevent).
If you are able to replicate this bug with the current version of zyn, then
feel free to reopen.

Bug#661887: mxml: Bad control character error when attempting to load banks

2012-06-11 Thread David Hanson

Thank you Lawrence!

I have tested your patch and it fixes the problem on my system. Since there
hasn't been any response/action from the maintainer, I've filed a bug report
(3534255) on the ZynAddSubFx SourceForge project page. I included your patch
in the bug report, so hopefully this will be resolved upstream.

Bug#662086: Possible resolution: Re: grub-install failed with raid+lvm

2012-03-23 Thread John Hanson
I ran into this same issue with a Debian Wheezy amd64 netinst disk
(Binary-1 20120201-15:35).

A quick Google search for some of the error messages turned up this post:
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-grub-devel/2011-June/012317.html

Like him, after mounting /proc manually while chrooted into /target,
the grub-install succeeded from the Debian installer.

Looks like grub-probe is basically failing for RAID and LVM because
/proc is not mounted before grub-installer is called.

Hope this helps.

2012-03-02 Thread David Hanson
Package: zynaddsubfx
Version: 2.4.0-1.2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

Starting a couple of weeks ago, zynaddsubfx will not load instrument banks or
parameter files. Only puts out pure sine wave. It had been working fine for
months.

Running from the command line gives the following error when trying to load any
instrument bank or parameter file:

mxml: Bad control character 0x1f not allowed by XML standard!

Checked unzipped parameter files with a hex editor, no 0x1f characters in file.

Removed and purged zynaddsubfx and libmxml1, re-installed, got the same error.

Having the same problem on my laptop (testing, i686pae).

Bug#608159: Clarifying http entries in /etc/services

2010-12-27 Thread Jeff Hanson
Package: netbase
Version: 4.44

Bug # 442304 changed the service name of port 8080 to http-alt as per
IANA. The problem is that http-alt is not unique on IANA's list as
it is shared with 8008 and 591:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

Wikipedia has different name assignments:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers

I recommend the following changes and additions:
http-alt 8008 # Alternate HTTP
http_alt8080 webcache# WWW Caching service
http_alt_alt 8090 # Alternate HTTP

These being all unofficial there isn't any hard rule for their
names/assignments and there are plenty of exceptions. There are a lot
of firewall help sites that list the ones I'm recommending but I'm
unsure if they are using different sources or just using Wikipedia's
list. Deciding a popularity contest with Google isn't ideal but I'm
more concerned with uniqueness in the service names versus popular
usage.

8090 is used by Tsung/IDX-Tsunami but it's not in Debian
http://tsung.erlang-projects.org/user_manual.html#htoc22

VLC uses 8080 for streaming over http.

Bug#579669: Synaptics keeps Xorg from starting.

2010-05-19 Thread Tim Hanson
Hi,

I recently dist-upgraded, and Xorg stopped working; to the best of my
knowledge, it appears to be the synaptics driver which is causing the
problem. I am running Debian Sid on a Asus EEEpc 904, and xorg
without a xorg.conf. I don't care about touch to tap or any of these
fiddly details - can use a USB mouse - just need X to start.

Strangely, it seems to be loading the synaptics driver twice - once
for /dev/input/event8 and once for /dev/input/mouse0 ; the latter
fails.

Bug#579669: Synaptics keeps Xorg from starting.

2010-05-19 Thread Tim Hanson
Julien,

Ah, forgive me. Was confused because synaptics was the last/only (EE)
I see in the log file.

Any ideas for cause? I'm at a loss... I guess I'll just reinstall.

thanks,
Tim

Strangely, it seems to be loading the synaptics driver twice - once
for /dev/input/event8 and once for /dev/input/mouse0 ; the latter
 fails.

That's expected, and unrelated to X not starting for you.

 Cheers,
 Julien

Package: ftp.debian.org

Please change the overrides file for this package. It should have
been reassigned to section lisp, but was left at devel. I've
uploaded the package with section lisp as I think appropriate.

mit-scheme_9.0-1_i386.deb: package says section is lisp, override says devel.

Bug#554836: segfault in audacity when saving files

2009-11-16 Thread Tim Hanson
Hi All -

I've rebooted the system using both 'nfs4' and 'nfs' in /etc/fstab,

guess it was a protocol mismatch?

I've reassigned this bug to gvfs, because obviously this is an issue
 between gvfs and nfs4.

The error messages look like our usual protocol mismatch after the 1.4
 upgrade.

Tim, does it still happen after you log out and log in again?

Bug#554836: segfault in audacity when saving files

2009-11-11 Thread Tim Hanson
Hi David,

You seem to be correct - a program that I am developing under ocaml
also fails when opening a GTK filechooser dialog. I'm glad you
noticed this, as I was naturally thinking that my program was
incorrect. The ocaml program fails with a very similar stack trace.

I changed the mount options for a NFS server
from
crackle:/crackle /mnt/crackle nfs4_netdev,auto0 0
to
crackle:/crackle/mnt/cracklenfs4rw,hard,intr,user0 0

and this seems to have fixed the problem. Audacity now works
properly, as do other gtk programs.

I do not understand why, though. Anyway, your pointer was very much
appreciated!

Tim

 Hi Tim,

given the backtrace, I notice libgioremote-volume-monitor.so, which is a
part of gvfs. Which makes me suspect there could might be a problem with be
some hardware/drives/storage you have. Does this make sense to you? Does it
matter whether different devices are unmounted, auto-mounted or manually
mounted when you try to export?

Does this error occur in other Gnome or wxWidgets programs as well, when
 opening a File save dialog?

 Hi Chris,

I've been looking at old RFA bugs, and tra clearly is a good candidate,
since the last upload was in 2002 and it looks like its functionality is
 provided by other packages.

If you don't want this package to go away, feel free to close the bug.
But I really don't think there's a point in keeping it in Debian.

half-installed kqemu

Bug#472820: adduser: Need override when home directory exists

2008-03-26 Thread Jeff Hanson
Package: adduser
Version: 3.103ubuntu1
Severity: wishlist

Ubuntu bug #178616
When a new user is added and the default home directory for the username
already exists, adduser issues a warning and refuses to touch it. This
is desirable to prevent unintentional damage from copying skel and
setting uid/gid. But when a home directory has to be created beforehand
and the admin wants adduser to copy skel and set uid/gid, there is no
way to override the default behavior. This situation arises when the
user's home directory is an individual mount on a md, lvm, or dm-crypt
device. The device must be mounted first so skel is copied to the
correct target but the uid/gid can't be set correctly because the
user/group doesn't exist yet.

Bug#466317: cl-modlisp: please depend on libapache2-mod-lisp

2008-02-17 Thread Chris Hanson
Package: cl-modlisp
Severity: serious

The cl-modlisp package currently depends on libapache-mod-lisp, which
is scheduled for removal from Debian. This dependency is preventing
cl-modlisp from entering testing, so it's worth fixing.

I've just uploaded libapache2-mod-lisp, which provides the same socket
interface, but with apache2 rather than apache1. cl-modlisp should
work fine with it, but I've only tested the package with MIT/GNU
Scheme, which works fine.

Please test cl-modlisp with the new libapache2-mod-lisp, and if it
works OK, please update cl-modlisp to depend on libapache2-mod-lisp
rather than on libapache-mod-lisp.

Thanks,
Chris

Bug#431034: Debian: libapache-mod-lisp removal (#431034): ported to apache2 in 2004

Looks like libapache-mod-lisp has been ported to Apache2 since 2004:

CCing the cl-modlisp maintainer to see if he wants to adopt it.

I'm the one who did the apache2 port. I also have an open ITP for
libapache2-mod-lisp, and have done most of the packaging. But I
haven't managed to put in the last few hours to get it ready for
upload. Help would be welcome, although I'll probably get it done in
time for the Lenny release.

Bug#443937: openafs-modules-source: Bizzare failures when building on a newer cc/glibc

2007-10-15 Thread Chris Hanson
   Date: Sun, 07 Oct 2007 12:54:34 -0700
   From: Russ Allbery [EMAIL PROTECTED]

We think we've tracked this down to not a kernel revision but the upgrade
from gcc to 4.2, and specifically its treatment of signed integer overflow
   as undefined.

Could you try this patch and see if it fixes the problem for you?

I'm not the original reporter, but I experienced the same symptoms. I
can confirm that the patch fixes the bug.

Thanks.

Bug#442943: dhelp: dhelp_parse segfaults on long linkname

2007-09-17 Thread Chris Hanson
Package: dhelp
Version: 0.5.24-0.1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

dhelp_parse can segfault on long lines in some cases. In sid, the
current w3-recs package causes such a segfault in its postinst. The
bug and its fix are trivial; a patch appears below.

As an aside, some of the fields in the database records are much too
small. If they were big enough this wouldn't have happened.

Not quite accurate. There's now a working C back end that is portable
to all architectures. This will be a new package, mit-scheme-c. The
main holdup at this point is that I need time to do the packaging.

After generating packages for vmware workstation 6.0, none of the

No, you didn't miss anything. As a general rule, I always set variables
to default values, then source the defaults file. But you can certainly
omit DISK if you prefer.

Bug#408906: hdapsd: suggested THRESHOLD is out of range

2007-01-28 Thread Chris Hanson
Package: hdapsd
Version: 1:0.0.20061007-1
Severity: normal

In the new packages (thanks for putting them together!) the file
/etc/default/hdapsd contains a variable assignment THRESHOLD=15, which
is then translated into a -s option that's passed to the program.
But the acceptable range for this option is a real number between zero
and one, inclusive, according to the code.

The THRESHOLD variable is a holdover from the older hdapsd design,
and isn't really appropriate here. At the least, it should be renamed
SENSITIVITY. But it's probably better to eliminate the variable
altogether, since there's no documentation explaining what it does or
how to choose an appropriate value. Reading the code doesn't help,
since this is just one variable in a complex equation.

If you do decide to keep the variable, make sure there's a default.
Right now, if THRESHOLD isn't set in /etc/default/hdapsd, then the
program is called without an argument to the -s option.

Bug#401259: logcheck: logcheck needs to override locale for grep

2006-12-01 Thread Chris Hanson
Package: logcheck
Version: 1.2.51
Severity: normal

Logcheck has an implicit assumption that the default locale should be
used by grep when processing log files. However, that's not always
the case. For example, I use the locale en_US.UTF-8, and
consequently grep assumes that its inputs are encoded as UTF-8. But
the log files appear to be encoded as ISO 8859-1, which means that
sometimes my rules don't match.

Specifically, I have a rule that reads

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ kernel: input: .* as
/class/input/input[0-9]+$

which is supposed to ignore messages from the kernel announcing input
devices. But the following log line isn't handled right:

Dec 2 00:05:01 ravna kernel: input: Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical
Mouse® 1.0A as /class/input/input3

The reason it doesn't match is that the R in a circle character is
encoded in the log file as using the ISO 8859-1 code 0xae, but this
isn't a valid first byte of a UTF-8 code. Consequently, the .
pattern doesn't match it. In fact, I don't think there's _any_ way to
match this byte sequence in a UTF-8 locale.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what to do about this, because it's not
obvious how the log-file messages relate to the locale. This message
comes from the kernel, which presumably doesn't know what the locale
is. Furthermore, this particular text is coming directly from the
device, and just being passed along by the kernel -- I have no idea if
USB specifies the character coding that is used in these strings, or
if it's just an uninterpreted sequence of bytes that are encoded any
way the manufacturer pleases.

One thing that works in this case is to set LC_ALL=C prior to
calling grep. But if the log files sometimes contain UTF-8 coding,
this will mess that up Perhaps the kernel log lines need to be
handled differently?

I hope you have a better idea about how to handle this.

Bug#398493: gnupg2: info files improperly installed

2006-11-13 Thread Chris Hanson
Package: gnupg2
Version: 2.0.0-1
Severity: normal

The info files for gnupg2 aren't installed right, and additionally
there are some problems with their content. Here are the problems:

* There are two info files, but only one is installed. Specifically,
the file doc/gnupg.info-1 isn't being installed. Also, the
(installed) file doc/gnupg.info is looking for gnupg.info-1 and
will need to be modified to look for gnupg2.info-1 once that is
  installed.

* The info files aren't being registered, so they don't appear in the
info directory and info gnupg2 doesn't work. Since the package
uses debhelper, the easiest way to get this to work is to call
dh_installinfo in debian/rules (and provide a .postinst file).

* The info file refers to the program as gpg, but it should be
  called gpg2 to prevent confusion.

Bug#395571: Audacious lacks Debian menu entry

No big rush,in fact if you're pretty far along with v1.2.x then as far as I'm concerned you could just wait and put the menu in with that package. I don't know if 1.1.2 is going to make Etch or if 1.2.x is going to be a while but that's an option.

it can't be installed due to conflicting relationships. Ironically,

If you look at the maintainer scripts, you'll see that the code to
manipulate the emacs files is boilerplate, automatically generated by
debhelper. The mit-scheme package doesn't do any explicit management of
this file.

Consequently I'd expect the same behavior from _any_ package that
installs emacs files using debhelper. Have you done any tests to
confirm this? If that's the case, this isn't a bug in the mit-scheme
package; it _might_ be a bug in emacs or debhelper.

It seems to me that remove/mit-scheme rely on mit-scheme being
configured at this stage which is not the case.
(emacs21-nox does not depend on it)

In which case there's a problem with emacs?
