Bug#767864: units should recommend python-unidecode

2014-11-02 Thread mike castleman
Package: units
Version: 2.11-1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

hi,

The units package current recommends python, in order to run the
units_cur helper script. However, this script can not run without the
python-unidecode package also installed. So this package should probably
also be recommended (or suggested or something). I don't understand
Python well enough to entirely say with confidence if any other packages
are needed but which I happened to already have on my system.

Thanks!

Current versions of the perl-modules package apparently don't include

Bug#614313: msva-perl: asks many times if i'd like to restart on upgrade

2011-02-20 Thread mike castleman
Package: msva-perl
Version: 0.8-2
Severity: minor

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

hello,

I was recently upgrading some parts of my system. The msva-perl popped
up a dialog box informing me that some parts of the msva had been
upgraded and asking if I'd like to restart. This was sort of unexpected,
but okay, so I chose yes. The problem is that the dialog box then
reappeared three or four more times, which is kind of obnoxious.
msva-perl should pop this dialog box up at most once per dpkg run.

It would be nice if xgettext would support JavaScript source files.
There is a patch to do this at

but when the author proposed this to upstream, he doesn't seem to have
got any response:
http://old.nabble.com/Gettext:-xgettext-JavaScript-scanner-backend-td27706865.html

openssh-client provides ssh-keygen, which monkeysphere and
monkeysphere-host both use for fingerprinting keys. (Other ssh
components are used in the ssh-proxycommand and update-known_hosts
subcommands, but those could reasonably fail with an informative error
message if openssh-client were not installed).

Ah, okay. If monkeysphere actually does depend on openssh-client, then I
guess it's not a bug for it to say that it depends on openssh-client.

Bug#568779: ssh-askpass-fullscreen attempts to parse prompt as markup

2010-02-07 Thread mike castleman
Package: ssh-askpass-fullscreen
Version: 0.3-3
Severity: important

If you pass a string with angle brackets into it into
ssh-askpass-fullscreen, then it will attempt to parse the string as some
kind of markup. If the parsing fails, then ssh-askpass-fullscreen will
display no prompt at all. This failure to properly display a prompt
leaves the user with no idea what is going on.

For example:
m...@palm:~$ ssh-askpass-fullscreen 'Enter passphrase for m...@mlcastle.net'

(ssh-askpass-fullscreen:17193): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to set text from markup
due to error parsing markup: Error on line 1 char 90: 'm...@mlcastle.net' is
not a valid name: '@'

However, other ssh-askpass implementations (such as ssh-askpass-gnome
and the the canonical ssh-askpass) do not have this markup-parsing
'feature' and so display the provided text without a problem.
ssh-askpass-fullscreen should do the same; otherwise, it violates the
interface assumptions that ssh-askpass has offered for years.

I'm unfortunately not enough of an emacs wizard to say exactly how this

Bug#538216: ace-of-penguins: windows can't be moved

2009-07-24 Thread mike castleman
Package: ace-of-penguins

Severity: normal

For some reason, I often find that I am not allowed to move
ace-of-penguins windows out of the corner of the scren in which they
start. This happens often but not always, and I haven't been able to
discren any pattern. My window manager is metacity. Attached is a
screenshot showing the 'Move' option in the window menu disabled.

I'd blame this on the window manager, but I've never seen this problem
with any application other than the ace-of-penguins games, so maybe a
wrong hint is being set somewhere? I don't fully understand how these
things work.

If I can further assist in debugging, please let me know.

Bug#495464: bacula-sd: mtx-changer script fails if /bin/mt is mt-st

2008-08-17 Thread mike castleman
Package: bacula-sd
Version: 2.4.0-1~bpo40+1
Severity: important

in the included /etc/bacula/scripts/mtx-changer, there's a stanza
starting at line 68:

  Linux)
if test -e /etc/debian_version ; then
   ready=drive status
else
   ready=ONLINE
fi

which sets how to grep through the output of mt to see if the drive is
ready or not. however, the special debian code here is only correct if
/bin/mt is from mt-gnu. if it's from mt-st, then drive status will not
be present in the output, so mtx-changer will think the drive is never
ready after changing tapes.

this is especially problematic because bacula-sd specifically recommends
mt-st, not mt-gnu.

Bug#411913: texlive-pstricks: pst-barcode.tex installed in wrong place

2007-02-21 Thread mike castleman
Package: texlive-pstricks
Version: 2005.dfsg.3-1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

hi,

The pst-barcode package as shipped doesn't work. I had to move the
pst-barcode.tex file from
/usr/share/doc/texlive-pstricks/latex/pst-barcode/pst-barcode.tex
to
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/generic/pstricks/pst-barcode.tex
in order to get it to work. I'm not 100% sure that this is the correct
location, but, as I said, it works in the new location and not in the
old one. The file in question is clearly not documentation, anyhow.

Bug#407596: libquicktime-dev: including lqt/libdv.h gives warning

it seems that the header file lqt/libdv.h includes

following:

#include quicktime.h
#include libdv.h // NOTE: this is libdv.h from libquicktime!

Bug#394935: seeing this also

2007-01-10 Thread mike castleman
I'm seeing this also, though for me it is a new install rather than an
upgrade.

I tried strace'ing the script and the suspicious line is:

execve(/usr/sbin/slapcat, [/usr/sbin/slapcat, -f,
/etc/ldap/slapd.conf, -b, dc=democracynow,dc=org, |,
/bin/gzip], [/* 15 vars */]) = 0

It seems like for whatever reason, the | /bin/gzip is getting passed
as arguments to slapcat rather than parsed by the shell. Setting
compress=off in the task file allows the task to complete successfully,
so this is indeed the problem.

I looked quickly at the source and can't figure out what is wrong with
it. If no one else can solve the problem, I will see if I can figure it
out and provide a patch.

thx,
mike

Bug#400936: find(1): typo in description of %b printf specifier

2006-11-29 Thread mike castleman
Package: findutils
Version: 4.2.28-1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

In the find(1) manpage, the description of the %b format specifier in
the -printf command currently reads:

%b The amount of disk space used for this file in 512-byte
blocks. Since disk space is allocated in multiples of the
filesystem block size this is usually greater than
%s/1024, but it can also be smaller if the file is a
 sparse file.

While it is technically true that %b is usually greater than %s/1024, it
is probably more useful to say here that it is usually greater than
%s/512.

A patch making this change is attached.

Bug#386074: tetex-base: please update version of xkeyval package

2006-09-05 Thread mike castleman
No, the workaround is to install XeTeX (together with the xkeyval
version it is shipping) where every additional software should be
installed: Either in /usr/local (so that xkeyval.sty gets into
 /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/xkeyval/xkeyval.sty) or in $HOME. In
both cases, the updated xkeyval package will take precedence over the
one shipped with the Debian teTeX packages.

Hm, for whatever reason this didn't happen for me. The xkeyval in Debian
was taking precedence over the one in /usr/local, but I suppose that
this could be an artifact of the rather strange packaging job that XeTeX
did. I'm not going to worry about it too much.

This won't happen, sorry. We usually wait for a new upstream release of
teTeX (otherwise we'd have to start to maintain our own TeX
distribution, instead of just packaging teTeX). However, teTeX has been
abandoned upstream. It's successor, TeXLive, is also available in
testing; maybe its version of xkeyval is sufficient.

Understood. Thanks for your time, and for your quick response.

mike

Bug#386074: tetex-base: please update version of xkeyval package

2006-09-04 Thread mike castleman
Package: tetex-base
Version: 3.0-20
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The package XeTeX [http://scripts.sil.org/xetex/] requires a newer
version of the xkeyval package than the one which is currently shipped
with Debain. The workaround is to forcefully remove the things that
Debian ships and use the one which XeTeX is shipping, but this is really
lame. It would be much preferred if Debian shipped with an up-to-date
version of xkeyval.

Thanks,
mike

Bug#382054: gnome-power-manager: screen does not turn on when lid opened

2006-08-08 Thread mike castleman
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.14.3-2
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

hi,

If gnome-power-manager is running, and I close the lid of my laptop
(even for just a second) and then open it up again, the laptop screen is
still off. I can move the mouse over to where I think a terminal window
might be, and then type
xset dpms force on
to re-enable the screen, but this is obviously an absurd solution. (If
the screen has been blank for a while, I first need to type my password
to make gnome-screensaver go away.)

Killing gnome-power-manager does solve the problem, the bug is either in
gnome-power-manager or in its interaction with some other component of
the system.

The laptop is a Dell XPS M1210, with an Intel 945 graphics chipset.

Any further needed information, or hints on debugging?

Thanks,
mike

Bug#381784: muine: please use gstreamer 0.10

2006-08-06 Thread mike castleman
Package: muine
Version: 0.8.5-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

hi,

On a newly installed system, muine refused to start for me (similar to
bug #351981). I could figure out no way to configure gstreamer0.8 with
any program currently in Debian (gstreamer-properties is configuring
0.10 for me).

The attached patch compiles muine against gstreamer0.10, and the
resulting packages seem to work fine for me. There appears to be no need
for any gstreamer-gconf package.

Thanks,
mike

Bug#381017: network-manager: should manage interfaces marked allow-hotplug in /etc/network/interfaces

2006-08-01 Thread mike castleman
Package: network-manager
Version: 0.6.3-2
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

hi,

in recent versions of the Debian installer, the /etc/network/interfaces
gets a stanza by default like

allow-hotplug eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

this is, as far as I can tell, more or less the same as 'auto eth1', and
so NetworkManager should manage the interface.

the workaround is to change 'allow-hotplug' to 'auto', but it would be
much smoother if the user didn't have to do so.

Bug#378767: jackd: please include sample client programs

2006-07-18 Thread Mike Castleman
Package: jackd
Version: 0.101.1-1
Severity: wishlist

some of the example programs which come with jack (for example,
capture_client) are very useful. it would be great if they could be
packaged somewhere, either in the jackd package, as source files in the
libjack development package, or (perhaps best) in a new libjack-utils
package.

thanks a lot,

Bug#378623: moreutils: vipe, vidir: should default to /usr/bin/editor, not vi

2006-07-17 Thread Mike Castleman
Package: moreutils
Version: 0.14
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

According to Debian Policy §11.4:

every program that launches an editor or pager must use the EDITOR or
PAGER environment variable to determine the editor or pager the user
wishes to use. If these variables are not set, the programs
/usr/bin/editor and /usr/bin/pager should be used, respectively.

However, vipe and vidir as shipped default to vi, regardless of the
user's choice of editor.

A patch is attached.

The version in unstable appears to be 2.6.15-1. Should I test with that
or wait for 2.6.15-2 to appear?

I upgraded a few weeks ago to 2.6.14 in the hopes that the issue would

Bug#307329: sudo segfaults on first run

hi,

Sorry for the delayed reply.

Grr.

strace refuses to trace setuid programs. When I tried making strace

segfault. The segfaulting has been otherwise consistent, though.

Any other ideas? This is one of the more bizarre bugs out there.

Bug#307329: sudo segfaults on first run

2005-05-02 Thread Mike Castleman
Package: sudo
Version: 1.6.8p7-1
Severity: important

Hi,

sudo used to work fine for me, but since an upgrade, it has been
segfaulting after it prompts for the password but before running the
desired command. When the user has authenticated recently enough that
the password is not needed, then sudo runs just fine.

This may be related to the fact that I'm using LDAP for NSS and PAM
(though no other applications seem to exhibit this behavior). I can try
to help debug, but am not really sure even where to start looking.

Another potential gotcha is that I am running on ppc, if that matters.

Any thoughts?

Bug#305208: swf-player: symlink in mozilla-firefox plugins dir is wrong

2005-04-18 Thread Mike Castleman
Package: swf-player
Version: 0.3.4-1
Severity: important

Installing swf-player put a symlink in /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins
to libmozswfdec.so -- however the plugin name is actually libswfdecmozilla.so
so it doesn't work.
