Bug#623811: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/javaws: No such file or directory

2011-06-16 Thread Kipp Cannon

Hi Torsten,

Due to the removal of javaws from the openjdk packages I am no longer able
to use EVO (http://evo.caltech.edu/evoGate) for teleconference
collaboration. The package you suggest installing, icedtea-netx is not
available testing. It seems, therefore, it is now impossible to run web
start applications with OpenJDK on Debian testing. This is a serious
loss of functionality, and I hope it is fixed soon.

On that note, even if icedtea-netx was available in testing today, I
wouldn't have ever known that I need to install something called
icedtea-netx to run .jnlp applications. I am not a Java developer, and
I suspect no other non-experts will understand the association between the
package name icedtea-netx and the problem I need to run a webstart
application. Therefore, perhaps icedtea-netx should provide a javaws
virtual package, and openjdk should recommend javaws, which the package
manager will then show can be provided by icedtea-netx. By making the
dependency be on an intermediate virtual package named javaws it might
be more clear to people why they might want to install this package.

Thanks,

-Kipp

Bug#623811: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/javaws: No such file or directory

2011-04-25 Thread Huub Reuver
After running into the problem I found a few ways to work around it:
installing 6b18-1.8.3-2 (not an option for security reasons)
installing 6b18-1.8.7-2~squeeze1 (did not work for me)
installing 6b22-1.10.1-1 from the experimental repository

Upgrading openjdk-6-jre-lib openjdk-6-jre-headless and openjdk-6-jre to
experimental was the only working solution for me (besides from using
another system, not debian, for java).

Let's hope the package will get the unstable status soon. The 1.8.7-3
should never make it beyond unstable. Perhaps the netx-package is not
required for everyone but please make sure the openjdk-6-jre package
reaches sid first.

Thanks to the openjdk-team for their good work.

With regards,
Huub Reuver

you want to install the icedtea-netx package. We probably should add a
suggests to openjdk-6-jre to ease the transition.

Please learn the meaning of the severity. This bug certainly does not
'make the package in question unusable or mostly so'. It works well
for most users.

Cheers,
Torsten
