Ultimately, this is a bug in the unico gtk engine.
The clearlooks-phenix-theme package originally used the unico engine but
switched away from this engine in version 3.x, that's why that package
is no longer affected by this issue.

Re-assigning and merging this bug with the existing one(s).

Michael,

I think the themes I used are not available as packages.
I installed them from gnome-look.

Do you still want me to file a bug against them ?

Regards,
Loïc.

No it doesn't : I was not using Clearlooks-Phénix.
I've the same problem with Faience-Ocre or Zukini GTK themes.
I think the issue is caused by a lot of themes.

I tried to reproduce this. Not being a GNOME user, I looked at reverse
dependencies of libgtk-3-0.

wireshark, evince, gitg, gobby-0.5, emerillon are unaffected (and evince
arguably is a core gnome component).

Just gnunet-gtk crashes immediately after upgrading the package set
concerned with the following assertion:

gnunet-statistics-gtk: /tmp/buildd/cairo-1.10.2/src/cairo-surface.c:1174:
cairo_surface_mark_dirty_rectangle: Assertion `! _cairo_surface_has_mime_data

 2) Also... everything flickers (like when notifications pop up, which also
 seem to have broken
transparence... at least I can read some unrelated(?) text in them...

Cannot reproduce.

 3) The GTK controls look... ugly... as if no theme was loaded... like.. 2D

Everything looks normal for me, but maybe I just like 2D.

Hope this helps in sorting things out.

This is a red herring. As can be in the filename, I had cairo on hold to
work around bugs in other software. With a recent cairo things just
work. Maybe libgtk-3-0 could declare a Breaks against libcairo2 (=
1.12.0-1)? On the other hand with would only ever become relevant when
upgrading from squeeze to jessie, which is unsupported.

That leaves me with basically not being able to reproduce the grave
parts of the issue at all. Should this bug be downgraded?

Most likely gtk+ made some changes that broke the themes, which will need to be
updated. If you do

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme 'Adwaita' this should work

Yep, it's the theme setting it back to Adwaita and things work
again... it seems this (setting it back) is however only possible with

After upgradin to 3.8 I tried Clearloks-Phenix again... and immediately
