Bug#754926: Apply to debian fonts task force

2014-08-04 Thread Jonas Smedegaard
Quoting Vasudev Kamath (2014-08-04 05:30:53)
There is a wishlist bug requesting to split it into families, I'm not
sure if we really want to do it, It probably lead to one source
containing 28+ binary packages!. Since upstream doesn't ship
individual families still I thought of waiting. What do you think?

I think it is probably most sensible to discuss the details at the
appropriate bugreport - so will do that now... :-)

make command in upstream does not generate tarball for CJK fonts [0].
Shall I wait for upstream to fix it, or just generate tarball myself?

I've updated the package and is already in Git, basically I manually git
cloned and created tarball and noted sha hash at which this was
generated.

One more note package uses CDBS, if you are okay with this feel free to
add yourself to uploaders.

@Jonas: I know you are busy but if you can upload fonts-noto and give me
DM permission it would be great.

If other DD's can upload that is also well and good :).

Cheers,

The current package in git does not solve #754926 because upstream does
not pack CJK fonts into tarball when using make [0]. We might need to
create tarball for CJK family by our own, or wait for upstream to fix
it.

And due to the size of CJK fonts (total 419M in upstream
third_party/noto_cjk directory), we might need to separate them into the
following packages:

- fonts-noto-jp (*JP*)
- fonts-noto-kr (*KR*)
- fonts-noto-cn (*Hans*)
- fonts-noto-tw (*Hant*)

One more note package uses CDBS, if you are okay with this feel free to

I can learn CDBS, but I am not in pkg-fonts-devel yet. If anyone
willingly to add me to pkg-fonts-devel, my alioth account is
czchen-guest.

Oh thats why I didn't find them, in the list. Then I thought it might be
in already included fonts so marked closes for the bug. I will fix that.

Uh 419M? Thats just too huge!. Probably better to make them separate
package? and make fonts-noto depends on it? or suggest it so we don't
end up pulling everything to user machine who don't want CJK.

Cool. Well pkg-fonts lacks active DD's so you might need to wait in the mean
time I've mirrored package on alioth[1] can you access it from there?

Just let me know when you have pushed so I can sync it across to actual repo.

Since #756456 requests to split fonts-noto, maybe it is time to separate
different font family.

Sorry, I do not have permission for collab-maint either. I tried to use
github, but CJK tarball is too big (~200M) for github. Maybe you can
generate pristine-tar/upstream branch first so that I can help to create
separated packages? Or we can wait for upstream to fix make command?

Since #756456 requests to split fonts-noto, maybe it is time to separate

It can be done but since upstream themselves won't split the fonts, we
manually splitting them will be more work. So I'm just waiting till
upstream themselves split it into multiple binary.

Also upstream doesn't use tags in their repo, if they had used it we
could used watch file to track individual tags just like we do in
fonts-android (Thanks to Yamane San).

So lets hold on a bit till upstream organizes their source more.

Since you have already registered on Alioth ask some DD you know to send
a signed mail to NM Front Desk requesting them to add you to
collab-maint. Since you are DM I think you yourself can request them.

Yes I can generate that pristine-tar ball, you can also do simply use
git.debian.org to clone and generate the pristine source. I did same for
importing new version of noto today.

Didn't look at the code, but sounds like more work is needed to split
this package into families - and as I understand it DM permission won't
allow uploading that split anyway. Please tell me when that work is
done (and then also please help remind me the magic dput-ng command I
should do to grant you the DM permission).

And yes I need to remove the closes on the bug#754926 as Chang
mentioned CJK variants are not included in the main hinted folder.
Also size comes to around 419M :-O.

Sure I will remind the dput-ng magic command once I've fixed. it and
yes DM on split package won't help if we split it should be uploaded
by a DD first.
