Bug#764448: mate-applets 1.8.1+dfsg1-1 tries to overwrite files in gnome-applets 3.8.1-1

Hi,

it seems that gnome-applets has been shipping the conflicting applets
and corresponding manpages for a while, so IMO the responsibility for
renaming lies on the fork. So, I'm marking this bug as not affecting
gnome-applets (spotted via the UDD cleaner view).

(Besides, this bug has been workaround'd in Debian since then,
acknowledged as an upstream bug in MATE, and apparently fixed there:
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-applets/issues/103)

Cheers,

for now I have removed the extra man pages from mate-applets
bin:package. They will re-appear once MATE 1.10 is ready for release
(jessie+1).

Greets,
Mike

Bug#764448: mate-applets 1.8.1+dfsg1-1 tries to overwrite files in gnome-applets 3.8.1-1

Thanks for reporting this. This needs to be fixed upstream+downstream.

Thanks for the report.

For the MATE maintainers: We also ran into that issue on Ubuntu 12.04
LTS Precise with the packages from MATE PPA, so after this is fixed in
Debian Sid, it should be fixed in the MATE Precise PPA, too.

 Suggested solutions:

There's a standard procedure for such cases:
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s-binaries

 1) quick and dirty (unsatisfactory for me, but can be a temporary band aid):
 add a conflicts with gnome-applets

Yeah, that's usually discouraged.

 2) optimal solution: change the names of the conflicting applets (possibly
 coordinating with the gnome-applets maintainer)

That's the officially recommended way.

 3) less work than 2) but also less good: use the debian alternatives system
to make mate and gnome applets with the same name coexist (definitely
 coordinating with the gnome-applets maintainer)

For that their API/ABI always needs to be same. Which likely isn't.
And it's also likely much more work than 2).

Manpages.

I had a look at the contents of the package, apparently everything else has
a unique (full) filename, meaning that at least some part of the path is
unique, even if the final filename duplicates something in gnome, so this is
ok.

Instead, most manpages in man1 in the package have exactly the same name as
their gnome counterparts, so these should be changed/fixed.
E.g. cdplayer_applet.1.gz, charpick_applet.1.gz, cpufreq-selector.1.gz,

drivemount_applet.1.gz, geyes_applet.1.gz, gkb_applet.1.gz, ...
Perhaps they should all be prefixed with mate- or suffixed with -mate or
something similar to make their names unique.

This should be relatively painless, apart from having to do some script-fu
to rename the manpages before building the deb binary package... Could be
done by awk probably, or even with some pipeing of commands like
cd $INSTALL/usr/share/man/man1 ; for i in `ls *.1.gz` ; mv $i mate-$i ; done
or something along these lines.

Cheers
Giacomo

I removed the man pages again from the bin:package... for now... I
have pinged upstream to get this fixed [1].
