It's a known issue upstream, but a fix hasn't been determined yet.

Dear Maintainer,

  when i put (incidentally) a corrupted configuration in  init.vim
  (=.vimrc).
  NeoVim does open with these properties :
  Width: 200
  Height: 100
This size is not readable, so the user have to resize the window to
  understand what does happens.

  I think a size of 640x480  is a more appropriate as default size.
