The config I had on buster works but with one change reqired.
On bullseye machines I need to add this to the configuration
username map script = /etc/samba/usermap.sh

The original report was for a system running buster
(samba 2:4.9.5+dfsg-5+deb10u1).
I managed to get things working again with 2:4.9.5+dfsg-5+deb10u2
by specifying a mapping for the default '*' idmap domain:
idmap config
Package: samba
Version: 2:4.9.5+dfsg-5+deb10u2
Severity: important
