Ran the command and mirror selection was fine, no errors.

$sudo netselect-apt -c US -o temp.list
$cat temp.list
# Debian packages for stable
deb http://mirror.cogentco.com/debian/ stable main contrib
# Uncomment the deb-src line if you want 'apt-get source'
# to work with most packages.
# deb-src http://mirror.cogentco.com/debian/ stable main contrib

# Security updates for stable
deb http://security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib

Moved temp.list to /etc/apt/sources.list and an update gave errors:

$sudo apt update

Reading package lists... Done
E: The repository 'http://security.debian.org stable/updates Release' does not have a Release file. N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default. N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

The format has apparently changed as of Bullseye stable to be stable-security instead of stable/updates
https://debian-handbook.info/browse/en-US/stable/apt.html#sect.apt-sources.list.testing

Changing the last line of sources.list to
  deb http://security.debian.org/ stable-security main contrib
fixed the problem.
