slang1-dev is deprecated, as there is no longer any need to use a 'non-UTF8' version. Hence all the other packages should/will be rebuilt with slang1-utf8-dev in the future (including libnewt). However, slang is frozen for the Debian Sarge release. This changeover is planned for immediately post-sarge.
