Another tid-bit that might be of influence: this is with
the (proprietary) nvidia display driver
I have similar problems but I use GPLed ATI drivers (Xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-4 on
sarge).
Moreover, after quitting gcompris, the screen is locked at 800x600.

After upgrading to v 6.5.2-3 (from 6.4.xx), on startup, gcompris
switches the screen to 800x600 -- but starts more than halfway off the
screen! In fact, after switching the screen resolution back to 1280x1024,
