Hello, I'm joining along here to express my support for this patch and bug report in general. For me, enabling the bytecode interpreter and compiling my own X.org packages made the difference between actually upgrading to xserver-xorg and sticking with xserver-xfree86. With current xserver-xorg packages (in fact, all of them from the beginning) server-side truetype fonts look *very* ugly, which makes applications like emacs all but unusable.
It should be noted also that the debian freetype packages *do* have the bytecode interpreter enabled in their default build, which is why client-side fonts (used by all modern applications) don't suffer from this problem. As a final note, bug #345865 appears to be a duplicate of this bug, so the two should probably be merged.
