Shouldn't this option be used by default? About a year ago the dot
files were taken into account by default.

No, it should not. LIST -a option is not necessary supported by ftp server.
The option was not ever enabled by default.

The mirror command does not take into account fields starting with dot,
I suppose this is because of the output of ls.
