just wanted to chime in and report that this is indeed a problem. An example of such breakage is bug 341634 [0], filed against evince.
If a user of beast encounters this problem, it looks like it can be
repaired with:
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
as suggested by Sebastien Bacher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
